We set up a connection between the theory of spherical designs and the question of minima of Epstein's zeta function. More precisely, we prove that a Euclidean lattice, all layers of which hold a 4-design, achieves a local minimum of the Epstein's zeta function, at least at any real s>n/2. We deduce from this a new proof of Sarnak and Strömbergsson's theorem asserting that the root lattices D4 and E8, as well as the Leech lattice, achieve a strict local minimum of the Epstein's zeta function at any s>0. Furthermore, our criterion enables us to extend their theorem to all the so-called extremal modular lattices(up to certain restrictions) using a theorem of Bachoc and Venkov, and to other classical families of lattices (e.g. the Barnes-Wall lattices).
We define zeta-functions of weight lattices of compact connected semisimple Lie groups. If the group is simply-connected, these zeta-functions coincide with ordinary zeta-functions of root systems of associated Lie algebras. In this paper we consider the general connected (but not necessarily simply-connected) case, prove the explicit form of Witten's volume formulas for these zeta-functions, and further prove functional relations among them which include their volume formulas.
We study zeta-functions of weight lattices of compact connected semisimple Lie groups of type $A_3$. Actually we consider zeta-functions of SU(4), SO(6) and PU(4), and give some functional relations and new classes of evaluation formulas for them.
We investigate the properties of the zeta-function of well-rounded sublattices of a fixed arithmetic lattice in the plane. In particular, we show that this function has abscissa of convergence at $s=1$ with a real pole of order 2, improving upon a recent result of S. Kuehnlein. We use this result to show that the number of well-rounded sublattices of a planar arithmetic lattice of index less or equal $N$ is $O(N \log N)$ as $N \to \infty$. To obtain these results, we produce a description of integral well-rounded sublattices of a fixed planar integral well-rounded lattice and investigate conve…
The theory of Ihara zeta functions is extended to non-compact arithmetic quotients of Bruhat-Tits trees. This new zeta function turns out to be a rational function, despite the infinite-dimensional setting. In general it has zeros and poles, in contrast to the compact case. The determinant formulas of Bass and Ihara hold true if one defines the determinant as limit of all finite principal minors. From this analysis, a prime geodesic theorem is derived, which, applied to special arithmetic groups, yields new asymptotic assertions on class numbers of orders in global fields.
We consider the prehomogeneous vector space of pairs of ternary quadratic forms. For the lattice of pairs of integral ternary quadratic forms and its dual lattice, there are six zeta functions associated with the the prehomogeneous vector space. We present a conjecture which states that there are simple relations among the six zeta functions. We prove that the coefficients coincide on fundamental discriminants.
We give a general expression of spherical functions on $p$-adic homogeneous spaces of $G$, based on data of $G$ and functional equations of spherical functions. Then, we show a unified method to obtain functional equations of spherical functions and relate them those of $p$-adic local zeta functions of small prehomogeneous vector spaces.
We study the probability that a cycle of length k in the lattice [1, n]^s does not contain more lattice points than the k vertices of the cycle. Then we generalize this problem to other configurations induced by a given graph H, introducting the chromatic zeta fuction of a graph.
We introduce certain lattice sums associated with hyperplane arrangements, which are (multiple) sums running over integers, and can be regarded as generalizations of certain linear combinations of zeta-functions of root systems. We also introduce generating functions of special values of those lattice sums, and study their properties by virtue of the theory of convex polytopes. Consequently we evaluate special values of those lattice sums, especially certain special values of zeta-functions of root systems and their affine analogues. In some special cases it is possible to treat sums running o…
The symmetric group $\mathfrak S_{n+1}$ of degree $n+1$ admits an $n$-dimensional irreducible $\mathbf Q \mathfrak S_n$-module $V$ corresponding to the hook partition $(2,1^{n-1})$. By the work of Craig and Plesken we know that there are $σ(n+1)$ many isomorphism classes of $\mathbf Z \mathfrak S_{n+1}$-lattices which are rationally equivalent to $V$, where $σ$ denotes the divisor counting function. In the present paper we explicitly compute the Solomon zeta function of these lattices. As an application we obtain the Solomon zeta function of the $\mathbf Z \mathfrak S_{n+1}$-lattice defined by…
We introduce the zeta function of the prehomogenous vector space of binary cubic forms, twisted by the real analytic Eisenstein series. We prove the meromorphic continuation of this zeta function and identify its poles and their residues. We also identify the poles and residues of the zeta function when restricted to irreducible binary cubic forms. This zeta function can be used to prove the equidistribution of the lattice shape of cubic rings.
Zeta functions of periodic cubical lattices are explicitly derived by computing all the eigenvalues of the adjacency operators and their characteristic polynomials. We introduce cyclotomic-like polynomials to give factorization of the zeta function in terms of them and count the number of orbits of the Galois action associated with each cyclotomic-like polynomial to obtain its further factorization. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for such a polynomial to be irreducible and discuss its irreducibility from this point of view.
We consider zeta functions: $Z(f ;P ;s)=\sum_{\m \in \N^{n}} f(m_1,..., m_n) P(m_1,..., m_n)^{-s/d}$ where $P \in \R [X_1,..., X_n]$ has degree $d$ and $f$ is a function arithmetic in origin, e.g. a multiplicative function. In this paper, I study the meromorphic continuation of such series beyond an a priori domain of absolute convergence when $f$ and $P$ satisfy properties one typically meets in applications. As a result, I prove an explicit asymptotic for a general class of lattice point problems subject to arithmetic constraints.
We study the interplay between recurrences for zeta related functions at integer values, `Minor Corner Lattice' Toeplitz determinants and integer composition based sums. Our investigations touch on functional identities due to Ramanujan and Grosswald, the transcendence of the zeta function at odd integer values, the Li Criterion for the Riemann Hypothesis and pseudo-characteristic polynomials for zeta related functions. We begin with a recent result for ζ(2s) and some seemingly new Bernoulli relations, which we use to obtain a generalised Ramanujan polynomial and properties thereof.
We investigate the location of zeros and poles of a dynamical zeta function arizing in a class of lattice spin models introduced in the 60-ties by M. Kac. The transfer operator method allows us to prove the xistence of infinitely nontrivial zeros of this function on the real line. For certain parameter values there exist also infinitely many trivial equally spaced zeros on a line parallel to the imaginary axis. Hence also for this kind of dynamical zeta function some kind of Riemann hypothesis seems to hold.
We give an overview of the theory of functional relations for zeta-functions of root systems, and show some new results on functional relations involving zeta-functions of root systems of types $B_r$, $D_r$, $A_3$ and $C_2$. To show those new results, we use two different methods. The first method, for $B_r$, $D_r$, $A_3$, is via generating functions, which is based on the symmetry with respect to Weyl groups, or more generally, on our theory of lattice sums of certain hyperplane arrangements. The second method for $C_2$ is more elementary, using partial fraction decompositions.
We study the connection between the theory of spherical designs and the question of extrema of the height function of lattices. More precisely, we show that a full-rank n-dimensional Euclidean lattice, all layers of which hold a spherical 2-design, realises a stationary point for the height function, which is defined as the first derivative at 0 of the spectral zeta function of the associated flat torus. Moreover, in order to find out the lattices for which this 2-design property holds, a strategy is described which makes use of theta functions with spherical coefficients, viewed as elements o…
The Hlawka Zeta Function is a Dirichlet series defined geometrically which provides an integral representation of the number of lattice points contained in the dilation $tD$ for some star shaped region $D\subset \mathbb{R}^{2}$ and some real number $t\in \mathbb{R}^{+}$. We give an overview of this construction and integral representation before giving the Hlawka Zeta function as a sum of Eisenstein Series acting on $K$-finite vectors multiplied by Fourier coefficients depending on $D$. We then study the case of $D$ as an circle, ellipse, and then square to study functional equations and "fibe…
In this paper we show how to use elementary methods to prove that the volume of Sl_k R / Sl_k Z is zeta(2) * zeta(3) * ... * zeta(k) / k. Using a version of reduction theory presented in this paper, we can compute the volumes of certain unbounded regions in Euclidean space by counting lattice points and then appeal to the machinery of Dirichlet series to get estimates of the growth rate of the number of lattice points appearing in the region as the lattice spacing decreases. We also present a proof of the closely related result that the Tamagawa number of Sl_k Q is 1 that is somewhat simpler a…
Let $α>1$ be an irrational number of finite type $τ$. In this paper, we introduce and study a zeta function $Z_α^\sharp(r,q;s)$ that is closely related to the Lipschitz-Lerch zeta function and is naturally associated with the Beatty sequence ${\mathcal B}(α):=(\lfloorαm\rfloor)_{m\in{\mathbb N}}$. If $r$ is an element of the lattice ${\mathbb Z}+{\mathbb Z}α^{-1}$, then $Z_α^\sharp(r,q;s)$ continues analytically to the half-plane $\{σ>-1/τ\}$ with its only singularity being a simple pole at $s=1$. If $r\not\in{\mathbb Z}+{\mathbb Z}α^{-1}$, then $Z_α^\sharp(r,q;s)$ extends analytically to the …
In this article we prove that integral lattices with minimum <= 7 (or <= 9) whose set of minimal vectors form spherical 9-designs (or 11-designs respectively) are extremal, even and unimodular. We furthermore show that there does not exist an integral lattice with minimum <=11 which yields a 13-design.
In this paper, we first reveal an intrinsic relation between non-abelian zeta functions and Epstein zeta functions for algebraic number fields. Then, we expose a fundamental relation between stability of lattices and distance to cusps. Next, using these two relations, we explicitly express rank two zeta functions in terms of the well-known Dedekind zeta functions. Finally, based on such an expression, we show that all zeros of rank two non-abelian zeta functions are entirely sitting on the critical line whose real part equals to 1/2. This is an integrated part of our Geo-Arithmetic Program.
In this paper, new probability bounds are derived for algebraic lattice codes. This is done by using the Dedekind zeta functions of the algebraic number fields involved in the lattice constructions. In particular, it is shown how to upper bound the error performance of a finite constellation on a Rayleigh fading channel and the probability of an eavesdropper's correct decision in a wiretap channel. As a byproduct, an estimate of the number of elements with a certain algebraic norm within a finite hyper-cube is derived. While this type of estimates have been, to some extent, considered in algeb…
We study universality properties of the Epstein zeta function $E_n(L,s)$ for lattices $L$ of large dimension $n$ and suitable regions of complex numbers $s$. Our main result is that, as $n\to\infty$, $E_n(L,s)$ is universal in the right half of the critical strip as $L$ varies over all $n$-dimensional lattices $L$. The proof uses an approximation result for Dirichlet polynomials together with a recent result on the distribution of lengths of lattice vectors in a random lattice of large dimension and a strong uniform estimate for the error term in the generalized circle problem. Using the same …
We study lattice points in d-dimensional spheres, and count their number in thin spherical segments. We found an upper bound depending only on the radius of the sphere and opening angle of the segment. To obtain this bound we slice the segment by hyperplanes of rational direction, and then cover an arbitrary segment with one having rational direction. Diophantine approximation can be used to obtain the best rational direction possible.
We investigate properties of zeta functions of polynomial rings and their quotients, generalizing and extending some classical results about Dedekind zeta functions of number fields. By an application of Delange's version of the Ikehara Tauberian Theorem, we are then able to determine the asymptotic order of the ideal counting function in such rings. As a result, we produce counting estimates on ideal lattices of bounded determinant coming from fixed number fields, as well as density estimates for any ideal lattices among all sublattices of $\mathbb Z^d$. We conclude with some more general spe…
A lattice is called well-rounded if its minimal vectors span the corresponding Euclidean space. In this paper we completely describe well-rounded full-rank sublattices of ${\mathbb Z}^2$, as well as their determinant and minima sets. We show that the determinant set has positive density, deriving an explicit lower bound for it, while the minima set has density 0. We also produce formulas for the number of such lattices with a fixed determinant and with a fixed minimum. These formulas are related to the number of divisors of an integer in short intervals and to the number of its representations…
We study the value distribution of the Epstein zeta function $E_n(L,s)$ for $0<s<\frac{n}{2}$ and a random lattice $L$ of large dimension $n$. For any fixed $c\in(1/4,1/2)$ and $n\to\infty$, we prove that the random variable $V_n^{-2c}E_n(\cdot,cn)$ has a limit distribution, which we give explicitly (here $V_n$ is the volume of the $n$-dimensional unit ball). More generally, for any fixed $\ve>0$ we determine the limit distribution of the random function $c\mapsto V_n^{-2c}E_n(\cdot,cn)$, $c\in[1/4 +\ve, 1/2-\ve]$. After compensating for the pole at $c=\frac12$ we even obtain a limit result on…

We compute the special values at nonpositive integers of the partial zeta function of an ideal of a real quadratic field applying an asymptotic version of Euler-Maclaurin formula to the lattice cone associated to the ideal considered. The Euler-Maclaurin formula involved is obtained by applying the Todd series of differential operators to an integral of a small perturbation of thecone. The additive property of Todd series w.r.t. the cone decomposition enables us to express the partial zeta values in terms of the continued fraction of the reduced element of the ideal. The expression obtained us…
The pair correlation is a localized statistic for sequences in the unit interval. Pseudo-random behavior with respect to this statistic is called Poissonian behavior. The metric theory of pair correlations of sequences of the form $(a_n α)_{n \geq 1}$ has been pioneered by Rudnick, Sarnak and Zaharescu. Here $α$ is a real parameter, and $(a_n)_{n \geq 1}$ is an integer sequence, often of arithmetic origin. Recently, a general framework was developed which gives criteria for Poissonian pair correlation of such sequences for almost every real number $α$, in terms of the additive energy of the in…
In this note we study, for a random lattice L of large dimension n, the supremum of the real parts of the zeros of the Epstein zeta function E_n(L,s) and prove that this random variable has a limit distribution, which we give explicitly. This limit distribution is studied in some detail; in particular we give an explicit formula for its distribution function.
This paper studies the interplay between probability, number theory, and geometry in the context of relatively prime integers in the ring of integers of a number field. In particular, probabilistic ideas are coupled together with integer lattices and the theory of zeta functions over number fields in order to show that $$P(\gcd(z_{1},z_{2})=1) = \frac{1}{ζ_{\Q(i)}(2)}$$ where $z_{1},z_{2} \in \mathbb{Z}[i]$ are randomly chosen and $ζ_{\Q(i)}(s)$ is the Dedekind zeta function over the Gaussian integers. Our proof outlines a lattice-theoretic approach to proving the generalization of this theore…
The relative density of visible points of the integer lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$ is known to be $1/ζ(d)$ for $d\geq 2$, where $ζ$ is Riemann's zeta function. In this paper we prove that the relative density of visible points in the Ammann-Beenker point set is given by $2(\sqrt{2}-1)/ζ_K(2)$, where $ζ_K$ is Dedekind's zeta function over $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2})$.
We prove that if $\mathcal{L} \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is a lattice such that $\det(\mathcal{L}') \geq 1$ for all sublattices $\mathcal{L}' \subseteq \mathcal{L}$, then \[ \sum_{\substack{\mathbf{y}\in\mathcal{L}\\\mathbf{y}\neq\mathbf0}} (\|\mathbf{y}\|^2+q)^{-s} \leq \sum_{\substack{\mathbf{z} \in \mathbb{Z}^n\\\mathbf{z}\neq\mathbf{0}}} (\|\mathbf{z}\|^2+q)^{-s} \] for all $s > n/2$ and all $0 \leq q \leq (2s-n)/(n+2)$, with equality if and only if $\mathcal{L}$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}^n$.
The Riemann zeta identity at even integers of Lettington, along with his other Bernoulli and zeta relations, are generalized. Other corresponding recurrences and determinant relations are illustrated. Another consequence is the application to sums of double zeta values. A set of identities for the Ramanujan and generalized Ramanujan polynomials is presented. An alternative proof of Lettington's identity is provided, together with its generalizations to the Hurwitz and Lerch zeta functions, hence to Dirichlet $L$ series, to Eisenstein series, and to general Mellin transforms. The Hurwitz number…
Boris Venkov passed away on November 10 2011 just 5 days before his 77th birthday. This article gives a short survey of the mathematical work of Boris Venkov in this direction.
In this paper, new probability estimates are derived for ideal lattice codes from totally real number fields using ideal class Dedekind zeta functions. In contrast to previous work on the subject, it is not assumed that the ideal in question is principal. In particular, it is shown that the corresponding inverse norm sum depends not only on the regulator and discriminant of the number field, but also on the values of the ideal class Dedekind zeta functions. Along the way, we derive an estimate of the number of elements in a given ideal with a certain algebraic norm within a finite hypercube. W…
In this paper we study spherical equidistribution on the space of (translates of) adelic lattices, which we apply to understand the fine-scale statistics of the directions in the set of shifted primitive lattice points. We also apply our results to the distribution of the free path lengths in the Boltzmann--Grad limit for point sets such as (possibly non-rational) translates of the lattice points all of whose coordinates are squarefree. Besides the equidistribution results for translates of expanding horospheres, a key ingredient is a probabilistic argument which allows us to tackle the techni…
We consider lattices generated by finite Abelian groups. We prove that such a lattice is strongly eutactic, which means the normalized minimal vectors of the lattice form a spherical 2-design, if and only if the group is of odd order or if it is a power of the group of order 2. This result also yields a criterion for the appropriately normalized minimal vectors to constitute a uniform normalized tight frame. Further, our result combined with a recent theorem of R. Bacher produces (via the classical Voronoi criterion) a new infinite family of extreme lattices. Additionally, we investigate the s…
