We investigate the location of zeros and poles of a dynamical zeta function arizing in a class of lattice spin models introduced in the 60-ties by M. Kac. The transfer operator method allows us to prove the xistence of infinitely nontrivial zeros of this function on the real line. For certain parameter values there exist also infinitely many trivial equally spaced zeros on a line parallel to the imaginary axis. Hence also for this kind of dynamical zeta function some kind of Riemann hypothesis seems to hold.
We provide an explicit construction of a cross section for the geodesic flow on infinite-area Hecke triangle surfaces which allows us to conduct a transfer operator approach to the Selberg zeta function. Further we construct closely related cross sections for the billiard flow on the associated triangle surfaces and endow the arising discrete dynamical systems and transfer operator families with two weight functions which presumably encode Dirichlet respectively Neumann boundary conditions. The Fredholm determinants of these transfer operator families constitute dynamical zeta functions, which…
The transfer operator for $Γ_0(N)$ and trivial character $χ_0$ possesses a finite group of symmetries generated by permutation matrices $P$ with $P^2=id$. Every such symmetry leads to a factorization of the Selberg zeta function in terms of Fredholm determinants of a reduced transfer operator. These symmetries are related to the group of automorphisms in $GL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ of the Maass wave forms of $Γ_0(N)$ . For the group $Γ_0(4)$ and Selberg's character $χ_α$ there exists just one non-trivial symmetry operator $P$. The eigenfunctions of the corresponding reduced transfer operator with eigen…
In this paper, we give concrete descriptions of leafwise cohomology groups and show the regularized determinant expression of the dynamical zeta function for fiber bundles over $S^{1}$. As applications, we show a functional equation and some formulas for special values of the dynamical zeta function.
A Riemmanian foliated dynamical system of 3-dimension $(\mathrm{RFDS}^{3})$ is a closed Riemannian 3-manifold with additional structures: foliation, dynamical system. In the context of arithmetic topology, it is a geometric/analytic analogue of an arithmetic scheme with a conjectural dynamical system suggested by C. Deninger. In this paper, we show leafwise cohomological expression of dynamical zeta function on a Riemannian foliated dynamical system.
This article introduces and investigates the basic features of a dynamical zeta function for group actions, motivated by the classical dynamical zeta function of a single transformation. A product formula for the dynamical zeta function is established that highlights a crucial link between this function and the zeta function of the acting group. A variety of examples are explored, with a particular focus on full shifts and closely related variants. Amongst the examples, it is shown that there are infinitely many non-isomorphic virtually cyclic groups for which the full shift has a rational zet…
Transfer operators and Ruelle zeta functions for super-continuous functions on one-sided topological Markov shifts are considered. For every super-continuous function, we construct a Banach space on which the associated transfer operator is compact. Using this Banach space, we establish the trace formula and spectral representation of Ruelle zeta functions for a certain class of super-continuous functions. Our results include, as a special case, the classical trace formula and spectral representation for the class of locally constant functions.
We discuss about the conjectural cohomological theory of dynamical zeta functions in the case of general Anosov flows. Our aim is to provide a functional-analytic framework that enables us to justify the basic part of the theory rigorously. We show that the zeros and poles of a class of dynamical zeta functions, including the semi-classical (or Gutzwiller-Voros) zeta functions, are interpreted as eigenvalues of the generators of some transfer operators acting on the leaf-wise de Rham cohomology spaces of the unstable foliation.
In this paper we continue to study the Reidemeister zeta function. We prove Pólya -- Carlson dichotomy between rationality and a natural boundary for analytic behavior of the Reidemeister zeta function for a large class of automorphisms of Abelian groups. We also study dynamical representation theory zeta functions counting numbers of fixed irreducible representations for iterations of an endomorphism. The rationality and functional equation for these zeta functions are proven for several classes of groups. We find a connection between these zeta functions and the Reidemeister torsions of the …
We use a simple argument to extend the microlocal proofs of meromorphicity of dynamical zeta functions to the nonorientable case. In the special case of geodesic flow on a connected non-orientable negatively curved closed surface, we compute the order of vanishing of the zeta function at the zero point to be the first Betti number of the surface.
We show that generating functions associated to the sequence of convergents of a quadratic irrational are related in a natural way to the dynam- ical zeta function of a hyperbolic automorphism of the 2-torus. As a corollary, this shows that the Lévy constant of a quadratic irrational appears naturally as the topological entropy of such maps.
We introduce multifractal pressure and dynamical multifractal zeta-functions providing precise information of a very general class of multifractal spectra, including, for example, the fine multifractal spectra of self-conformal measures and the fine multifractal spectra of ergodic Birkhoff averages of continuous functions.
The Kac-Baker model describes a 1-dim. classical lattice spin system with exponentially fast decaying two body interaction. The model was introduced by M. Kac and G. Baker to investigate the phenomenon of phase transition in systems with weak long-range interactions like van der Waals gas. Ruelle's dynamical zeta function for this model can be expressed in terms of Fredholm determinants of two transfer operators and hence is a meromorphic function. One of the two operators, found by M. Kac, is an integral operator with symmetric kernel acting in the Hilbert space of square integrable functions…
This errata fixes a mistake in the part of Giulietti, P.; Liverani, C.; Pollicott, M. Anosov flows and dynamical zeta functions. Ann. of Math. (2) {\bf 178} (2013), no. 2, 687--773, which proves a spectral gap for contact Anosov flows with respect to the measure of maximal entropy (Section 7). However, the first part of the paper, in which it is proved that the Ruelle zeta function is meromorphic, is unaffected.
In recent years Lichtenbaum has conjectured a description for the special values of Hasse--Weil zeta functions in terms of ``Weil-étale cohomology''. In earlier papers we studied a class of foliated dynamical systems which had some similarities with arithmetic schemes. Assuming that certain zeta regularized determinants exist we now prove an analogue of Lichtenbaum's conjectures for a particularly simple class of such dynamical systems: Using results of Álvarez López and Kordyukov we express the leading coefficient $ζ^*_R (0)$ of the Ruelle zeta function $ζ_R (s)$ at $s = 0$ in terms of analyt…
We consider a family of isometric extensions of the full shift on p symbols (for p a prime) parametrized by a probability space. Using Heath-Brown's work on the Artin conjecture, it is shown that for all but two primes p the set of limit points of the growth rate of periodic points is infinite almost surely. This shows in particular that the dynamical zeta function is not algebraic almost surely.
A characterization of dynamically defined zeta functions is presented. It comprises a list of axioms, natural extension of the one which characterizes topological degree, and a uniqueness theorem. Lefschetz zeta function is the main (and proved unique) example of such zeta functions. Another interpretation of this function arises from the notion of symmetric product from which some corollaries and applications are obtained.
We characterize Maass cusp forms for any cofinite Hecke triangle group as 1-eigenfunctions of appropriate regularity of a transfer operator family. This transfer operator family is associated to a certain symbolic dynamics for the geodesic flow on the orbifold arising as the orbit space of the action of the Hecke triangle group on the hyperbolic plane. Moreover we show that the Selberg zeta function is the Fredholm determinant of the transfer operator family associated to an acceleration of this symbolic dynamics.
We introduce multifractal pressure and dynamical multifractal zeta-functions providing precise information of a very general class of multifractal spectra, including, for example, the fine multifractal spectra of graph-directed self-conformal measures and the fine multifractal spectra of ergodic Birkhoff averages of continuous functions on graph-directed self-conformal sets.
Using Hecke triangle surfaces of finite and infinite area as examples, we present techniques for thermodynamic formalism approaches to Selberg zeta functions with unitary finite-dimensional representations $(V,χ)$ for hyperbolic surfaces (orbifolds) $Γ\backslash\mathbb{H}$ as well as transfer operator techniques to develop period-like functions for $(Γ,χ)$-automorphic cusp forms. This leads to several natural conjectures. We further show how to extend these results to the billiard flow on the underlying triangle surfaces, and study the convergence of transfer operators along sequences of Hecke…
In this paper we consider the transfer operator approach to the Ruelle and Selberg zeta functions associated to continued fractions transformations and the geodesic flow on the full modular surface. We extend the results by Ruelle and Mayer to two-variable zeta functions, $ζ(q,z)$ and $Z(q,z)$. The $q$ variable plays the role of the inverse temperature and the introduction of the "geometric variable" $z$ is essential in the tentative to provide a general approach, based on the Farey map, to the correspondence between the analytic properties of the zeta functions themselves, the spectral proper…
These are notes from a course given in Orsay in 2002 explaining carefully the Milnor-Thurston kneading determinant approach to dynamical zeta functions as interpreted by Baladi and Ruelle (Invent. Math. 1996). We make them available in view of the recent renewed interest in this approach. (see arXiv:1501.00294, The Milnor-Thurston determinant and the Ruelle transfer operator, HH Rugh, Comm. Math. Phys. 342 (2016) 603-614, and arXiv:1407.5313, Kneading with weights, HH Rugh, Lei Tan, J. Fractal Geom. 2 (2015) 339-375)
In this brief note we present a very simple strategy to investigate dynamical determinants for uniformly hyperbolic systems. The construction builds on the recent introduction of suitable functional spaces which allow to transform simple heuristic arguments in rigorous ones. Although the results so obtained are not exactly optimal the straightforwardness of the argument makes it noticeable.
We show that the Ruelle zeta function of any smooth Axiom A flow with orientable stable/unstable spaces has a meromorphic continuation to the entire complex plane. The proof uses the meromorphic continuation result of [arXiv:1410.5516] together with the work of Conley-Easton and [arXiv:1711.10059] which imply that every basic hyperbolic set can be put into the framework of [arXiv:1410.5516].
For a $\mathbb{Z}^d$-action $α$ by commuting homeomorphisms of a compact metric space, Lind introduced a dynamical zeta function that generalizes the dynamical zeta function of a single transformation. In this article, we investigate this function when $α$ is generated by continuous automorphisms of a compact abelian zero-dimensional group. We address Lind's conjecture concerning the existence of a natural boundary for the zeta function and prove this for two significant classes of actions, including both zero entropy and positive entropy examples. The finer structure of the periodic point cou…
The purpose of this paper is to give a short microlocal proof of the meromorphic continuation of the Ruelle zeta function for C^\infty Anosov flows. More general results have been recently proved by Giulietti-Liverani-Pollicott [arXiv:1203.0904] but our approach is different and is based on the study of the generator on the flow as a semiclassical differential operator.
It is well-known that the Artin-Mazur dynamical zeta function of a hyperbolic or quasi-hyperbolic toral automorphism is a rational function, which can be calculated in terms of the eigenvalues of the corresponding integer matrix. We give an elementary proof of this fact that extends to the case of general toral endomorphisms without change. The result is a closed formula that can be calculated by integer arithmetic only. We also address the functional equation and the relation between the Artin-Mazur and Lefschetz zeta functions.
We show an equality between the analytic torsion and the absolute value at the zero point of the Ruelle dynamical zeta function on a closed odd dimensional locally symmetric space twisted by an acyclic flat vector bundle obtained by the restriction of a representation of the underlying Lie group. This generalises author's previous result for unitarily flat vector bundles, and the results of Bröcker, Müller, and Wotzke on closed hyperbolic manifolds.
For geometrically finite non-compact developable hyperbolic orbisurfaces (including those of infinite volume), we provide transfer operator families whose Fredholm determinants are identical to the Selberg zeta function. Our proof yields an algorithmic and uniform construction. This construction is initiated with an externally provided cross section for the geodesic flow on the considered orbisurface that yields a highly faithful, but non-uniformly expanding discrete dynamical system modelling the geodesic flow. Through a number of algorithmic steps of reduction, extension, translation, induct…
A dynamical zeta function $ζ$ and a transfer operator $\scr L$ are associated with a piecewise monotone map $f$ of the interval $[0,1]$ and a weight function $g$. The analytic properties of $ζ$ and the spectral properties of $\scr L$ are related by a theorem of Baladi and Keller under an assumption of ``generating partition''. It is shown here how to remove this assumption and, in particular, extend the theorem of Baladi and Keller to the case when $f$ has negative Schwarzian derivative.
We study the Ruelle dynamical determinant of a real analytic diffeomorphism on a compact surface, assuming that the tangent space over the nonwandering set admits a dominated splitting. Combining previous work of Pujals and Sambarino with methods introduced by Rugh, we show that the determinant is either entire or holomorphic in a (possibly multiply) slit plane.
We study the Ruelle and Selberg zeta functions for $\Cs^r$ Anosov flows, $r > 2$, on a compact smooth manifold. We prove several results, the most remarkable being: (a) for $\Cs^\infty$ flows the zeta function is meromorphic on the entire complex plane; (b) for contact flows satisfying a bunching condition (e.g. geodesic flows on manifolds of negative curvature better than $\frac 19$-pinched) the zeta function has a pole at the topological entropy and is analytic in a strip to its left; (c) under the same hypotheses as in (b) we obtain sharp results on the number of periodic orbits. Our argume…
We introduce a Milnor metric on the determinant line of the cohomology of the underlying closed manifold with coefficients in a flat vector bundle, by means of interactions between the fixed points and the closed orbits of a Morse-Smale flow. This allows us to generalise the notion of the absolute value at zero point of the Ruelle dynamical zeta function, even in the case where this value is not well defined in the classical sense. We give a formula relating the Milnor metric and the Ray-Singer metric. An essential ingredient of our proof is Bismut-Zhang's Theorem.
We consider the problem of showing that 1 is an eigenvalue for a family of generalised transfer operators of the Farey map. This problem is related to the spectral theory of the modular surface via the Selberg Zeta function and the theory of dynamical zeta functions of maps. After briefly recalling these connections, we show that the problem can be formulated for operators on an appropriate Hilbert space and translated into a linear algebra problem for infinite matrices.
Given a holomorphic iterated function scheme with a finite symmetry group $G$, we show that the associated dynamical zeta function factorizes into symmetry-reduced analytic zeta functions that are parametrized by the unitary irreducible representations of $G$. We show that this factorization implies a factorization of the Selberg zeta function on symmetric $n$-funneled surfaces and that the symmetry factorization simplifies the numerical calculations of the resonances by several orders of magnitude. As an application this allows us to provide a detailed study of the spectral gap and we observe…
We associate to any dynamical system with finitely many periodic orbits of each length a collection of possible time-changes of the sequence of periodic point counts that preserve the property of counting periodic points. Intersecting over all dynamical systems gives a monoid of time-changes that have this property for all such systems. We show that the only polynomials lying in this `universally good' monoid are the monomials, and that this monoid is uncountable. Examples give some insight into how the structure of the collection of maps varies for different dynamical systems.
In this paper, a heuristic method to compute the Selberg zeta function for Hecke triangle groups, $G_q$ ($q>=3$) is described. The algorithm is based on the transfer operator method and an overview of the relevant background is given. We give numerical support for the claim that the method works and can be used to compute the Selberg Zeta function for $G_q$ to any desired precision. We also present some numerical results obtained by implementing the algorithm.
In this note, we study the dynamics and associated zeta functions of conformally compact manifolds with variable negative sectional curvatures. We begin with a discussion of a larger class of manifolds known as convex co-compact manifolds with variable negative curvature. Applying results from dynamics on these spaces, we obtain optimal meromorphic extensions of weighted dynamical zeta functions and asymptotic counting estimates for the number of weighted closed geodesics. A meromorphic extension of the standard dynamical zeta function and the prime orbit theorem follow as corollaries. Finally…
We construct variants of the Riemann zeta function with convenient properties and make conjectures about their dynamics; some of the conjectures are based on an analogy with the dynamical system of zeta. More specifically, we study the family of functions $V_z: s \mapsto ζ(s) \exp (zs)$. We observe convergence of $V_z$ fixed points along nearly logarithmic spirals with initial points at zeta fixed points and centered upon Riemann zeros. We can approximate these spirals numerically, so they might afford a means to study the geometry of the relationship of zeta fixed points to Riemann zeros.
We study the limit distribution of eigenvalues of a Ruelle operator (which is also called the Thurston pushforward operator) for the dynamical system $z \mapsto z^2+c$ when $c<-2$ and tends to $-2$.
The Weil conjecture is a delightful theorem for algebraic varieties on finite fields and an important model for dynamical zeta functions. In this paper, we prove a functional equation of Lefschetz zeta functions for infinite cyclic coverings which is analogous to the Weil conjecture. Applying this functional equation to knot theory, we obtain a new view point on the reciprocity of the Alexander polynomial of a knot.
In the paper as a new application of the Jacquet-Langlands correspondence we connect the transfer operators for different cofinite Fuchsian groups by comparing the corresponding Selberg zeta functions.
We prove a central limit theorem for the real and imaginary part and the absolute value of the Riemann zeta-function sampled along a vertical line in the critical strip with respect to an ergodic transformation similar to the Boolean transformation. This result complements a result by Steuding who has proven a strong law of large numbers for the same system. As a side result we state a general central limit theorem for a class of unbounded observables on the real line over the same ergodic transformation. The proof is based on the transfer operator method.
A decomposition theorem for the Lind zeta function of a reversal system $(X, T, R)$ of finite order is established. A reversal system can be regarded as an action of a certain group $G$ on $X$. To establish an explicit formula for the Lind zeta function of $(X, T, R)$, we need to consider finite index subgroups $H$ of $G$ with induced actions given by automorphisms or by flips. When the underlying dynamical system $(X, T)$ is either a shift of finite type or a sofic shift, we express the Lind zeta function of $(X, T, R)$ in terms of matrices.
In many non-integrable open systems in physics and mathematics resonances have been found to be surprisingly ordered along curved lines in the complex plane. In this article we provide a unifying approach to these resonance chains by generalizing dynamical zeta functions. By means of a detailed numerical study we show that these generalized zeta functions explain the mechanism that creates the chains of quantum resonance and classical Ruelle resonances for 3-disk systems as well as geometric resonances on Schottky surfaces. We also present a direct system-intrinsic definition of the continuous…
We study fixed points of iterates of dynamically affine maps (a generalisation of Lattès maps) over algebraically closed fields of positive characteristic $p$. We present and study certain hypotheses that imply a dichotomy for the Artin-Mazur zeta function of the dynamical system: it is either rational or non-holonomic, depending on specific characteristics of the map. We also study the algebraicity of the so-called tame zeta function, the generating function for periodic points of order coprime to $p$. We then verify these hypotheses for dynamically affine maps on the projective line, general…
