Using Hecke triangle surfaces of finite and infinite area as examples, we present techniques for thermodynamic formalism approaches to Selberg zeta functions with unitary finite-dimensional representations $(V,χ)$ for hyperbolic surfaces (orbifolds) $Γ\backslash\mathbb{H}$ as well as transfer operator techniques to develop period-like functions for $(Γ,χ)$-automorphic cusp forms. This leads to several natural conjectures. We further show how to extend these results to the billiard flow on the underlying triangle surfaces, and study the convergence of transfer operators along sequences of Hecke triangle groups.
For Kleinian groups acting on hyperbolic three-space, we prove factorization formulas for both the Selberg zeta-function and the automorphic scattering matrix. We extend results of Venkov and Zograf from Fuchsian groups, to Kleinian groups, and we give a proof that is simple and extendable to more general groups.
For cofinite Kleinian groups, with finite-dimensional unitary representations, we derive the Selberg trace formula. As an application we define the corresponding Selberg zeta-function and compute its divisor, thus generalizing results of Elstrodt, Grunewald and Mennicke to non-trivial unitary representations. We show that the presence of cuspidal elliptic elements sometimes adds ramification point to the zeta function. In fact, if D is the ring of Eisenstein integers, then the Selberg zeta-function of PSL(2,D) contains ramification points.

We initiate the study of Selberg zeta functions $Z_{Γ,χ}$ for geometrically finite Fuchsian groups $Γ$ and finite-dimensional representations $χ$ with non-expanding cusp monodromy. We show that for all choices of $(Γ,χ)$, the Selberg zeta function $Z_{Γ,χ}$ converges on some half-plane in $\mathbb{C}$. In addition, under the assumption that $Γ$ admits a strict transfer operator approach, we show that $Z_{Γ,χ}$ extends meromorphically to all of $\mathbb{C}$.
We study elements of the spectral theory of compact hyperbolic orbifolds $Γ\backslash \mathbb{H}^{n}$. We establish a version of the Selberg trace formula for non-unitary representations of $Γ$ and prove that the associated Selberg zeta function admits a meromorphic continuation to $\mathbb{C}$.
Let $\CmZ_{Y_0(N)}$ be the constant term of the logarithmic derivative at $s=1$ of the Selberg zeta function of the modular curve $Y_0(N)$. Jorgenson and Kramer established the bound $\CmZ_{Y_0(N)}=O_ε(N^ε)$, $ε>0$ by relating it to geometric invariants. In this article we give, for $N$ prime, another proof via $L$-functions and exponential sums improving on a previous approach by Abbes-Ullmo and Michel-Ullmo. We further derive a power of $\log N$ bound along the same line.
In this paper, we study the Selberg and Ruelle zeta functions on compact hyperbolic odd dimensional manifolds. These zeta functions are defined on one complex variable $s$ in some right half-plane of $\mathbb{C}$. We use the Selberg trace formula for arbitrary not neccesarily unitary representations of the fundamental group to establish the meromorphic continuation of these zeta functions to the whole complex plane.
In the present paper we give a simple mathematical foundation for describing the zeros of the Selberg zeta functions $Z_X$ for certain very symmetric infinite area surfaces $X$. For definiteness, we consider the case of three funneled surfaces. We show that the zeta function is a complex almost periodic function which can be approximated by complex trigonometric polynomials on large domains (in Theorem 4.2). As our main application, we provide an explanation of the striking empirical results of Borthwick (arXiv:1305.4850) (in Theorem 1.5) in terms of convergence of the affinely scaled zero set…
Over the last few years Pohl (partly jointly with coauthors) developed dual `slow/fast' transfer operator approaches to automorphic functions, resonances, and Selberg zeta functions for a certain class of hyperbolic surfaces $Γ\backslash\mathbb{H}$ with cusps and all finite-dimensional unitary representations $χ$ of $Γ$. The eigenfunctions with eigenvalue $1$ of the fast transfer operators determine the zeros of the Selberg zeta function for $(Γ,χ)$. Further, if $Γ$ is cofinite and $χ$ is the trivial one-dimensional representation then highly regular eigenfunctions with eigenvalue $1$ of the s…
We consider the dynamical zeta functions of Selberg and Ruelle associated with the geodesic flow on a compact odd-dimensional hyperbolic manifold. These dynamical zeta functions are defined for a complex variable $s$ in some right-half plane of $\mathbb{C}$. In [Spi18], it was proved that they admit a meromorphic continuation to the whole complex plane. In this paper, we establish functional equations for them, relating their values at $s$ with those at $-s$. We prove also a determinant representation of the zeta functions, using the regularized determinants of certain twisted differential ope…
We show that Selberg's eigenvalue conjecture concerning small eigenvalues of the automorphic Laplacian for congruence groups is equivalent to a conjecture about the non-existence of residual eigenvalues for a perturbed system. We prove this using a combination of methods from asymptotic perturbation theory and number theory.
Given a holomorphic iterated function scheme with a finite symmetry group $G$, we show that the associated dynamical zeta function factorizes into symmetry-reduced analytic zeta functions that are parametrized by the unitary irreducible representations of $G$. We show that this factorization implies a factorization of the Selberg zeta function on symmetric $n$-funneled surfaces and that the symmetry factorization simplifies the numerical calculations of the resonances by several orders of magnitude. As an application this allows us to provide a detailed study of the spectral gap and we observe…
The transfer operator for $Γ_0(N)$ and trivial character $χ_0$ possesses a finite group of symmetries generated by permutation matrices $P$ with $P^2=id$. Every such symmetry leads to a factorization of the Selberg zeta function in terms of Fredholm determinants of a reduced transfer operator. These symmetries are related to the group of automorphisms in $GL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ of the Maass wave forms of $Γ_0(N)$ . For the group $Γ_0(4)$ and Selberg's character $χ_α$ there exists just one non-trivial symmetry operator $P$. The eigenfunctions of the corresponding reduced transfer operator with eigen…
For hyperbolic Riemann surfaces of finite geometry, we study Selberg's zeta function and its relation to the relative scattering phase and the resonances of the Laplacian. As an application we show that the conjugacy class of a finitely generated, torsion-free, discrete subgroup of SL(2,R) is determined by its trace spectrum up to finitely many possibilities, thus generalizing results of McKean and Mueller to groups which are not necessarily cofinite.
We study Selberg zeta functions $Z(s,σ)$ associated to locally homogeneous vector bundles over the unit-sphere bundle of a complete odd-dimensional hyperbolic manifold of finite volume. We assume a certain condition on the fundamental group of the manifold. A priori, the Selberg zeta functions are defined only for s in some right half-space of $\mathbb{C}$. We will prove that for any locally homogeneous bundle the functions $Z(s,σ)$ have a meromorphic continuation to $\mathbb{C}$ and we will give a complete description of their singularities in terms of spectral data of the underlying manifold…
We give an explicit formula for the second variation of the logarithm of the Selberg zeta function, $Z(s)$, on Teichmüller space. We then use this formula to determine the asymptotic behavior as $\text{Re} (s) \to \infty$ of the second variation. As a consequence, for $m \in \mathbb{N}$, we obtain the complete expansion in $m$ of the curvature of the vector bundle $H^0(X_t, \mathcal K_t)\to t\in \mathcal T$ of holomorphic m-differentials over the Teichmüller space $\mathcal T$, for $m$ large. Moreover, we show that this curvature agrees with the Quillen curvature up to a term of exponential de…
We show meromorphic extension and analyze the divisors of a Selberg zeta function of odd type $Z_{Γ,Σ}^{\rm o}(λ)$ associated to the spinor bundle $Σ$ on odd dimensional convex co-compact hyperbolic manifolds $X:=Γ\backslash\hh^{2n+1}$. We define a natural eta invariant $η(D)$ associated to the Dirac operator $D$ on $X$ and prove that $η(D)=\frac{1}{πi}\log Z_{Γ,Σ}^{\rm o}(0)$, thus extending Millson's formula to this setting. As a byproduct, we do a full analysis of the spectral and scattering theory of the Dirac operator on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. We also define an eta invariant…
We continue the study of a special entry in the AdS/CFT dictionary, namely a holographic formula relating the functional determinant of the scattering operator in an asymptotically locally anti-de Sitter (ALAdS) space to a relative functional determinant of the scalar Laplacian in the bulk. A heuristic derivation of the formula involves a one-loop quantum effect in the bulk and the corresponding sub-leading correction at large N on the boundary. We presently explore a higher-dimensional version of the spinning BTZ black hole obtained as a quotient of hyperbolic space by a discrete subgroup of …
We give a new upper bound on the Selberg zeta function for a convex co-compact Schottky group acting on $ {\mathbb H}^{n+1}$: in strips parallel to the imaginary axis the zeta function is bounded by $ \exp (C |s|^δ) $ where $ δ$ is the dimension of the limit set of the group. This bound is more precise than the optimal global bound $ \exp (C |s|^{n+1}) $, and it gives new bounds on the number of resonances (scattering poles) of $ Γ\backslash {\mathbb H}^{n+1} $. The proof of this result is based on the application of holomorphic $ L^2$-techniques to the study of the determinants of the Ruelle …
We study the eta invariants of Dirac operators and the regularized determinants of Dirac Laplacians over hyperbolic manifolds with cusps. We follow Werner M"uller and use relative traces to define these spectral invariants. We show the regularity of eta and zeta functions at s=0. The Selberg trace formula and the detailed analysis of the unipotent terms give the relation between the eta invariant and the Selberg zeta function of odd type. This allows us to show the vanishing of the unipotent contribution. We show that the eta invariant and the Selberg zeta function of odd type satisfy certain …
In this paper, we consider the dynamical zeta functions of Ruelle and Selberg associated with the geodesic flow of a compact hyperbolic odd dimensional manifold $X$. These functions are initially defined on one complex variable $s$ in some right half-plane of $\mathbb{C}$. Our goal is the continue meromorphically the dynamical zeta functions to the whole complex plane, using the Selberg trace formula for arbitrary, not necessarily unitary, representations $χ$ of the fundamental group. First, we prove a trace formula for the integral operator $D^{\sharp}_χ(σ)e^{-t(D^{\sharp}_χ(σ))^{2}}$, induce…
