A dynamical zeta function $ζ$ and a transfer operator $\scr L$ are associated with a piecewise monotone map $f$ of the interval $[0,1]$ and a weight function $g$. The analytic properties of $ζ$ and the spectral properties of $\scr L$ are related by a theorem of Baladi and Keller under an assumption of ``generating partition''. It is shown here how to remove this assumption and, in particular, extend the theorem of Baladi and Keller to the case when $f$ has negative Schwarzian derivative.
We introduce "puzzles of quasi-finite type" which are the counterparts of our subshifts of quasi-finite type (Invent. Math. 159 (2005)) in the setting of combinatorial puzzles as defined in complex dynamics. We are able to analyze these dynamics defined by entropy conditions rather completely, obtaining a complete classification with respect to large entropy measures and a description of their measures with maximum entropy and periodic orbits. These results can in particular be applied to entropy-expanding maps like (x,y)-->(1.8-x^2+sy,1.9-y^2+sx) for small s. We prove in particular the meromo…
We study the limit distribution of eigenvalues of a Ruelle operator (which is also called the Thurston pushforward operator) for the dynamical system $z \mapsto z^2+c$ when $c<-2$ and tends to $-2$.
This paper describes new results on the growth and zeros of the Ruelle zeta function for the Julia set of a hyperbolic rational map. It is shown that the zeta function is bounded by $\exp(C_K |s|^δ)$ in strips $|\Re s| \leq K$, where $δ$ is the dimension of the Julia set. This leads to bounds on the number of zeros in strips (interpreted as the Pollicott-Ruelle resonances of this dynamical system). An upper bound on the number of zeros in polynomial regions $\{|\Re s | \leq |\Im s|^α\}$ is given, followed by weaker lower bound estimates in strips $\{\Re s > -C, |\Im s|\leq r\}$, and logarithmi…
We describe all possible bimodal over-twist patterns. In particular, we give an algorithm allowing one to determine what the left endpoint of the over-rotation interval of a given bimodal map is. We then define a new class of polymodal interval maps called well behaved, and generalize the above results onto well behaved maps.
We describe the Williams zeta functions and the twist zeta functions of sub-Lorenz templates generated by renormalizable Lorenz maps, in terms of the corresponding zeta-functions of the sub-Lorenz templates generated by the renormalized map and by the map that determines the renormalization type.
We study the expanding properties of random perturbations of regular interval maps satisfying the summability condition of exponent one. Under very general conditions on the interval maps and perturbation types, we prove strong stochastic stability.
We prove that for continuous maps on the interval, the existence of an n-cycle, implies the existence of n-1 points which interwind the original ones and are permuted by the map. We then use this combinatorial result to show that piecewise affine maps (with no zero slope) cannot be infinitely renormalizable.
We prove that, for a Ruelle-expanding map, the zeta function is rational and the topological entropy is equal to the exponential growth rate of the periodic points.
We show that the connectedness of the set of parameters for which the over-rotation interval of a bimodal interval map is constant. In other words, the over-rotation interval is a monotone function of a bimodal interval map.
We obtain formulas for the spectral zeta function of the Laplacian on symmetric finitely ramified fractals, such as the Sierpinski gasket, and a fractal Laplacian on the interval. These formulas contain a new type of zeta function associated with a polynomial (rational functions also can appear in this context). It is proved that this zeta function has a meromorphic continuation to a half plain with poles contained in an arithmetic progression. It is shown as an example that the Riemann zeta function is the zeta functions of a quadratic polynomial, which is associated with the Laplacian on an …
We study the behaviour of the dynamical zeta function and the orbit Dirichlet series for products of maps. The behaviour under products of the radius of convergence for the zeta function, and the abscissa of convergence for the orbit Dirichlet series, are discussed. The orbit Dirichlet series of the cartesian cube of a map with one orbit of each length is shown to have a natural boundary.
We prove that the flow generated by any interval map with zero topological entropy is minimally mean-attractable (MMA) and minimally mean-L-stable (MMLS). One of the consequences is that any oscillating sequence is linearly disjoint with all flows generated by interval maps with zero topological entropy. In particular, the Möbius function is orthogonal to all flows generated by interval maps with zero topological entropy (Sarnak's conjecture for interval maps). Another consequence is a non-trivial example of a flow having the discrete spectrum.
We studied topological and metric properties of the so-called interval translation maps (ITMs). For these maps, we introduced the maximal invariant measure and study its properties. Further, we study how the invariant measures depend on the parameters of the system. These results were illustrated by a simple example or a risk management model where interval translation maps appear~naturally.
In this paper, we study the Hausdorff dimension of the generalized intrinsic level set with respect to the given ergodic meausre in a class of non-uniformly hyperbolic interval maps with finitely many branches.
We study the jump of topological entropy for $C^r$ interval or circle maps. We prove in particular that the topological entropy is continuous at any $f \in C^r([0; 1])$ with $h_{top}(f) > \frac{\log^+ \|f'\|_\infty}{r}$. To this end we study the continuity of the entropy of the Buzzi-Hofbauer diagrams associated to $C^r$ interval maps.
For piecewise $C^1$ interval maps possibly containing critical points and discontinuities with negative Schwarzian derivative, under two summability conditions on the growth of the derivative and recurrence along critical orbits, we prove the nonexistence of wandering intervals, the existence of absolutely continuous invariant measures, and the bounded backward contraction property. The proofs are based on the method of proving the existence of absolutely continuous invariant measures of unimodal map, developed by Nowicki and van Strien.
In this short note we describe a simple but remarkably effective method for rigorously estimating Lyapunov exponents for expanding maps of the interval. We illustrate the applicability of this method with some standard examples.
In this paper we will develop a very general approach which shows that critical relations of holomorphic maps on the complex plane unfold transversally in a positively oriented way. We will mainly illustrate this approach to obtain transversality for a wide class of one-parameter families of interval maps, for example maps with flat critical points, piecewise linear maps, maps with discontinuities but also for families of maps with complex analytic extensions such as certain polynomial-like maps.
For uniformly expanding maps on the interval, analogous versions of the Berry-Esséen theorem are known but only with an unexplicit upper bound in $O(1/\sqrt{n})$ without any constants being specified. In this paper, we use the recent complex cone technique to prove an explicit Berry-Esséen estimate with a reasonable constant for these maps. Our method is not limited to maps on the interval however and should apply to many situations.
Consider the two-parameter family of real analytic maps $F_{a,b}:x \mapsto x+ a+{b\over 2π} \sin(2πx)$ which are lifts of degree one endomorphisms of the circle. The purpose of this paper is to provide a proof that for any closed interval $I$, the set of maps $F_{a,b}$ whose rotation interval is $I$, form a contractible set.
We study some special classes of piecewise continuous maps on a finite smooth partition of a compact manifold and look for invariant measures for such maps. We show that in the simplest one-dimensional case (so-called interval translation maps) a Borel probability non-atomic invariant measure exists for any map. We use this result to demonstrate that any interval translation map endowed with such a measure is metrically equivalent to an interval exchange map. Finally, we study the general case of piecewise continuous maps and prove a simple result on existence of an invariant measure provided …
We use the concept of Baire Ergodicity and Ergodic Formalism introduced to study topological and statistical attractors for interval maps, even with discontinuities. For that we also analyze the {\em wandering intervals attractors}. As a result, we establish the finiteness of the non-periodic topological attractors for piecewise $C^2$ maps with discontinuities. For $C^2$ interval maps without discontinuities, we show the coincidence of the statistical attractors with the topological ones and we calculate the upper Birkhoff averages of continuous functions for generic points, even when the map …
This survey article concerns inducing schemes in the context of interval maps. We explain how the study of these induced systems allows for the fine description of, not only, the thermodynamic formalism for certain multimodal maps, but also of its multifractal structure.
We prove that the solutions of the cohomological equation for Roth type interval exchange maps are Hölder continuous provided that the datum is of class $C^r$ with $r>1$ and belongs to a finite-codimension linear subspace.
In this article we provide sufficient conditions on a self-similar interval exchange map, whose renormalization matrix has complex eigenvalues of modulus greater than one, for the existence of affine interval exchange maps with wandering intervals and semi-conjugate with it. These conditions are based on the algebraic properties of the complex eigenvalues and the complex fractals built from the natural substitution emerging from self-similarity. We show that the cubic Arnoux-Yoccoz interval exchange map satisfies these conditions.
We consider perturbations of interval maps with indifferent fixed points, which we refer to as wobbly interval intermittent maps, for which stable laws for general Hölder observables fail. We obtain limit laws for such maps and Hölder observables. These limit laws are similar to the classical semistable laws previously established for random processes, but certain limitations imposed by the current dynamical set up are reflected in the main result. One of the considered examples is an interval map with a countable number of discontinuities, and to analyse it we need to construct a Markov/Young…
We extend some results of Marmi--Moussa--Yoccoz on the cohomological equations and local conjugacy classes of interval exchange maps of restricted Roth type. In particular, we answer a question of Krikorian about the codimension of the local conjugacy class of self-similar interval exchange maps associated to the Eierlegende Wollmilchsau and the Ornithorynque.
Let $f:I \to I$ be a $C^2$ multimodal interval map satisfying polynomial growth of the derivatives along critical orbits. We prove the existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states for the potential $ϕ_t:x\mapsto -t\log|Df(x)|$ for $t$ close to 1, and also that the pressure function $t \mapsto P(ϕ_t)$ is analytic on an appropriate interval near $t = 1$.
We consider piecewise $C^2$ non-flat maps of the interval and show that, for Lebesgue almost every point, its omega-limit set is either a periodic orbit, a cycle of intervals or the closure of the orbits of a subset of the critical points. In particular, every piecewise $C^2$ non-flat map of the interval displays only a finite number of non-periodic attractors.
We study discontinuous interval maps generated by the action of erasing block substitutions on the binary expansion. After establishing some general properties of these maps, we categorize erasing block substitutions in a hierarchy of classes displaying progressively stronger erasing character. We investigate how this affects the dynamics of the corresponding interval maps, showing that the richest dynamical behavior (Devaney and Li-Yorke chaos, infinite topological entropy) is achieved at a precise step in this hierarchy, which we name completely erasing substitutions. KEYWORDS: Topological d…
We state that for continuous interval maps the existence of a non empty closed invariant subset which is transitive and sensitive to initial conditions is implied by positive topological entropy and implies chaos in the sense of Li-Yorke, and we exhibit examples showing that these three notions are distinct.
Among the orbit patterns that force only eventually fixed trajectories, we completely describe the forcing relation, by answering the question: which orbit patterns force which others?
Irrational numbers of bounded type have several equivalent characterizations. They have bounded partial quotients in terms of arithmetic characterization and in the dynamics of the circle rotation, the rescaled recurrence time to $r$-ball of the initial point is bounded below. In this paper, we consider how the bounded type condition of irrational is generalized into interval exchange maps.
The twist interval of a twist map on the annulus $A=\mathbb{T}\times [0,1]$ has nonempty interior if $f$ preserves the area, but could be degenerate for general twist maps. In this note, we show that if a twist map $f$ is non-wandering, then the twist interval of $f$ is non-degenerate. Moreover, if there are two disjoint invariant curves of $f$, then their rotation numbers must be different (no matter if they are rational or irrational).
We consider the restriction of interval exchange transformations to algebraic number fields, which leads to maps on lattices. We characterize renormalizability arithmetically, and study its relationships with a geometrical quantity that we call the drift vector. We exhibit some examples of renormalizable interval exchange maps with zero and non-zero drift vector, and carry out some investigations of their properties. In particular, we look for evidence of the finite decomposition property: each lattice is the union of finitely many orbits.
We construct an appropriate metric on the collection of piecewise $\mathcal C^r$ maps defined on a compact interval. Although this metric space turns out to be not complete, we show that it is indeed a Baire space. As an application, we prove the robustness of non-degenerate critical points for this class of systems and we show the genericity of piecewise Lipschitz maps that admit an invariant Borel probability measure.
We prove a local limit theorem for Lipschitz continuous observables on a weakly coupled lattice of piecewise expanding interval maps. The core of the paper is a proof that the spectral radii of the Fourier-transfer operators for such a system are strictly less than 1. This extends the approach of [KL2] where the ordinary transfer operator was studied.
We consider intermittent maps T of the interval, with an absolutely continuous invariant probability measure μ. Kim showed that there exists a sequence of intervals A_n such that \sum μ(A_n)=\infty, but \{A_n\} does not satisfy the dynamical Borel-Cantelli lemma, i.e., for almost every x, the set \{n : T^n(x)\in A_n\} is finite. If \sum \Leb(A_n)=\infty, we prove that \{A_n\} satisfies the Borel-Cantelli lemma. Our results apply in particular to some maps T whose correlations are not summable.
We construct an invariant measure for a piecewise analytic interval map whose Lyapunov exponent is not defined. Moreover, for a set of full measure, the pointwise Lyapunov exponent is not defined. This map has a Lorenz-like singularity and non-flat critical points.
We construct variants of the Riemann zeta function with convenient properties and make conjectures about their dynamics; some of the conjectures are based on an analogy with the dynamical system of zeta. More specifically, we study the family of functions $V_z: s \mapsto ζ(s) \exp (zs)$. We observe convergence of $V_z$ fixed points along nearly logarithmic spirals with initial points at zeta fixed points and centered upon Riemann zeros. We can approximate these spirals numerically, so they might afford a means to study the geometry of the relationship of zeta fixed points to Riemann zeros.
We show that generating functions associated to the sequence of convergents of a quadratic irrational are related in a natural way to the dynam- ical zeta function of a hyperbolic automorphism of the 2-torus. As a corollary, this shows that the Lévy constant of a quadratic irrational appears naturally as the topological entropy of such maps.
We prove the rationality, the functional equations and calculate the radii of convergence of the Nielsen and the Reidemeister zeta functions of continuous maps on infra-solvmanifolds of type $\R$. We find a connection between the Reidemeister and Nielsen zeta functions and the Reidemeister torsions of the corresponding mapping tori. We show that if the Reidemeister zeta function is defined for a homeomorphism on an infra-solvmanifold of type $\R$, then this manifold is an infra-nilmanifold. We also prove that a map on an infra-solvmanifold of type $\R$ induced by an affine map minimizes the to…
We discuss analogues of the prime number theorem for a hyperbolic rational map f of degree at least two on the Riemann sphere. More precisely, we provide counting estimates for the number of primitive periodic orbits of f ordered by their multiplier, and also obtain equidistribution of the associated holonomies; both estimates have power savings error terms. Our counting and equidistribution results will follow from a study of dynamical zeta functions that have been twisted by characters of $S^1$. We will show that these zeta functions are non-vanishing on a half plane $\Re(s) > δ- ε$, where $…
We study fixed points of iterates of dynamically affine maps (a generalisation of Lattès maps) over algebraically closed fields of positive characteristic $p$. We present and study certain hypotheses that imply a dichotomy for the Artin-Mazur zeta function of the dynamical system: it is either rational or non-holonomic, depending on specific characteristics of the map. We also study the algebraicity of the so-called tame zeta function, the generating function for periodic points of order coprime to $p$. We then verify these hypotheses for dynamically affine maps on the projective line, general…
For almost all interval exchange maps T_0, with combinatorics of genus g>=2, we construct affine interval exchange maps T which are semi-conjugate to T_0 and have a wandering interval.
In this paper we initiate the study of the arithmetical properties of a set numbers which encode the dynamics of unimodal maps in a universal way along with that of the corresponding topological zeta function. Here we are concerned in particular with the Feigenbaum bifurcation.
In connection with the Entropy Conjecture it is known that the topological entropy of a continuous graph map is bounded from below by the spectral radius of the induced map on the first homology group. We show that in the case of a piecewise monotone graph map, its topological entropy is equal precisely to the maximum of the mentioned spectral radius and the exponential growth rate of the number of periodic points of negative type. This nontrivially extends a result of Milnor and Thurston on piecewise monotone interval maps. For this purpose we generalize the concept of Milnor-Thurston zeta fu…
With each piecewise monotonic map of the unit interval, a dimension triple is associated. The dimension triple, viewed as a Z[t, t^{-1}] module, is finitely generated, and generators are identified. Dimension groups are computed for Markov maps, unimodal maps, multimodal maps, and interval exchange maps. It is shown that the dimension group defined here is isomorphic to K_0(A), where A is a C*-algebra (an "AI-algebra") defined in dynamical terms.
We describe Markov interval maps via branching systems and develop the theory of relative branching systems, characterizing when the associated representations of relative graph C*-algebras are faithful. When the Markov interval maps $f$ have escape sets, we use our results to characterize injectivity of the associated relative graph algebra representations, improving on previous work by the first, third, and fourth authors.
