Among the orbit patterns that force only eventually fixed trajectories, we completely describe the forcing relation, by answering the question: which orbit patterns force which others?
In this paper we show that the piecewise linear map f(x) = px for x in [0,1/p], and sx-s/p for x in (1/p,1], p > 1, 0 < s < 1 which has an expanding, onto branch and a contracting branch is eventually piecewise expanding and exact.
We study shrinking target problems and the set $\mathcal{E}_{\text{ah}}$ of eventually always hitting points. These are the points whose first $n$ iterates will never have empty intersection with the $n$-th target for sufficiently large $n$. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions on the shrinking rate of the targets for $\mathcal{E}_{\text{ah}}$ to be of full or zero measure especially for some interval maps including the doubling map, some quadratic maps and the Manneville-Pomeau map. We also obtain results for the Gauss map and correspondingly for the maximal digits in continued fract…
We describe all possible bimodal over-twist patterns. In particular, we give an algorithm allowing one to determine what the left endpoint of the over-rotation interval of a given bimodal map is. We then define a new class of polymodal interval maps called well behaved, and generalize the above results onto well behaved maps.
We study the expanding properties of random perturbations of regular interval maps satisfying the summability condition of exponent one. Under very general conditions on the interval maps and perturbation types, we prove strong stochastic stability.
We prove that for continuous maps on the interval, the existence of an n-cycle, implies the existence of n-1 points which interwind the original ones and are permuted by the map. We then use this combinatorial result to show that piecewise affine maps (with no zero slope) cannot be infinitely renormalizable.
We show that the connectedness of the set of parameters for which the over-rotation interval of a bimodal interval map is constant. In other words, the over-rotation interval is a monotone function of a bimodal interval map.
We prove that the flow generated by any interval map with zero topological entropy is minimally mean-attractable (MMA) and minimally mean-L-stable (MMLS). One of the consequences is that any oscillating sequence is linearly disjoint with all flows generated by interval maps with zero topological entropy. In particular, the Möbius function is orthogonal to all flows generated by interval maps with zero topological entropy (Sarnak's conjecture for interval maps). Another consequence is a non-trivial example of a flow having the discrete spectrum.
We studied topological and metric properties of the so-called interval translation maps (ITMs). For these maps, we introduced the maximal invariant measure and study its properties. Further, we study how the invariant measures depend on the parameters of the system. These results were illustrated by a simple example or a risk management model where interval translation maps appear~naturally.
In this paper, we study the Hausdorff dimension of the generalized intrinsic level set with respect to the given ergodic meausre in a class of non-uniformly hyperbolic interval maps with finitely many branches.
We study the jump of topological entropy for $C^r$ interval or circle maps. We prove in particular that the topological entropy is continuous at any $f \in C^r([0; 1])$ with $h_{top}(f) > \frac{\log^+ \|f'\|_\infty}{r}$. To this end we study the continuity of the entropy of the Buzzi-Hofbauer diagrams associated to $C^r$ interval maps.
For piecewise $C^1$ interval maps possibly containing critical points and discontinuities with negative Schwarzian derivative, under two summability conditions on the growth of the derivative and recurrence along critical orbits, we prove the nonexistence of wandering intervals, the existence of absolutely continuous invariant measures, and the bounded backward contraction property. The proofs are based on the method of proving the existence of absolutely continuous invariant measures of unimodal map, developed by Nowicki and van Strien.
In this short note we describe a simple but remarkably effective method for rigorously estimating Lyapunov exponents for expanding maps of the interval. We illustrate the applicability of this method with some standard examples.
In this paper we will develop a very general approach which shows that critical relations of holomorphic maps on the complex plane unfold transversally in a positively oriented way. We will mainly illustrate this approach to obtain transversality for a wide class of one-parameter families of interval maps, for example maps with flat critical points, piecewise linear maps, maps with discontinuities but also for families of maps with complex analytic extensions such as certain polynomial-like maps.
For uniformly expanding maps on the interval, analogous versions of the Berry-Esséen theorem are known but only with an unexplicit upper bound in $O(1/\sqrt{n})$ without any constants being specified. In this paper, we use the recent complex cone technique to prove an explicit Berry-Esséen estimate with a reasonable constant for these maps. Our method is not limited to maps on the interval however and should apply to many situations.
Consider the two-parameter family of real analytic maps $F_{a,b}:x \mapsto x+ a+{b\over 2π} \sin(2πx)$ which are lifts of degree one endomorphisms of the circle. The purpose of this paper is to provide a proof that for any closed interval $I$, the set of maps $F_{a,b}$ whose rotation interval is $I$, form a contractible set.
We study some special classes of piecewise continuous maps on a finite smooth partition of a compact manifold and look for invariant measures for such maps. We show that in the simplest one-dimensional case (so-called interval translation maps) a Borel probability non-atomic invariant measure exists for any map. We use this result to demonstrate that any interval translation map endowed with such a measure is metrically equivalent to an interval exchange map. Finally, we study the general case of piecewise continuous maps and prove a simple result on existence of an invariant measure provided …
We use the concept of Baire Ergodicity and Ergodic Formalism introduced to study topological and statistical attractors for interval maps, even with discontinuities. For that we also analyze the {\em wandering intervals attractors}. As a result, we establish the finiteness of the non-periodic topological attractors for piecewise $C^2$ maps with discontinuities. For $C^2$ interval maps without discontinuities, we show the coincidence of the statistical attractors with the topological ones and we calculate the upper Birkhoff averages of continuous functions for generic points, even when the map …
This survey article concerns inducing schemes in the context of interval maps. We explain how the study of these induced systems allows for the fine description of, not only, the thermodynamic formalism for certain multimodal maps, but also of its multifractal structure.
We prove that the solutions of the cohomological equation for Roth type interval exchange maps are Hölder continuous provided that the datum is of class $C^r$ with $r>1$ and belongs to a finite-codimension linear subspace.
In this article we provide sufficient conditions on a self-similar interval exchange map, whose renormalization matrix has complex eigenvalues of modulus greater than one, for the existence of affine interval exchange maps with wandering intervals and semi-conjugate with it. These conditions are based on the algebraic properties of the complex eigenvalues and the complex fractals built from the natural substitution emerging from self-similarity. We show that the cubic Arnoux-Yoccoz interval exchange map satisfies these conditions.
We consider perturbations of interval maps with indifferent fixed points, which we refer to as wobbly interval intermittent maps, for which stable laws for general Hölder observables fail. We obtain limit laws for such maps and Hölder observables. These limit laws are similar to the classical semistable laws previously established for random processes, but certain limitations imposed by the current dynamical set up are reflected in the main result. One of the considered examples is an interval map with a countable number of discontinuities, and to analyse it we need to construct a Markov/Young…
We extend some results of Marmi--Moussa--Yoccoz on the cohomological equations and local conjugacy classes of interval exchange maps of restricted Roth type. In particular, we answer a question of Krikorian about the codimension of the local conjugacy class of self-similar interval exchange maps associated to the Eierlegende Wollmilchsau and the Ornithorynque.
Let $f:I \to I$ be a $C^2$ multimodal interval map satisfying polynomial growth of the derivatives along critical orbits. We prove the existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states for the potential $ϕ_t:x\mapsto -t\log|Df(x)|$ for $t$ close to 1, and also that the pressure function $t \mapsto P(ϕ_t)$ is analytic on an appropriate interval near $t = 1$.
We consider piecewise $C^2$ non-flat maps of the interval and show that, for Lebesgue almost every point, its omega-limit set is either a periodic orbit, a cycle of intervals or the closure of the orbits of a subset of the critical points. In particular, every piecewise $C^2$ non-flat map of the interval displays only a finite number of non-periodic attractors.
We study discontinuous interval maps generated by the action of erasing block substitutions on the binary expansion. After establishing some general properties of these maps, we categorize erasing block substitutions in a hierarchy of classes displaying progressively stronger erasing character. We investigate how this affects the dynamics of the corresponding interval maps, showing that the richest dynamical behavior (Devaney and Li-Yorke chaos, infinite topological entropy) is achieved at a precise step in this hierarchy, which we name completely erasing substitutions. KEYWORDS: Topological d…
We state that for continuous interval maps the existence of a non empty closed invariant subset which is transitive and sensitive to initial conditions is implied by positive topological entropy and implies chaos in the sense of Li-Yorke, and we exhibit examples showing that these three notions are distinct.
Irrational numbers of bounded type have several equivalent characterizations. They have bounded partial quotients in terms of arithmetic characterization and in the dynamics of the circle rotation, the rescaled recurrence time to $r$-ball of the initial point is bounded below. In this paper, we consider how the bounded type condition of irrational is generalized into interval exchange maps.
The twist interval of a twist map on the annulus $A=\mathbb{T}\times [0,1]$ has nonempty interior if $f$ preserves the area, but could be degenerate for general twist maps. In this note, we show that if a twist map $f$ is non-wandering, then the twist interval of $f$ is non-degenerate. Moreover, if there are two disjoint invariant curves of $f$, then their rotation numbers must be different (no matter if they are rational or irrational).
We consider the restriction of interval exchange transformations to algebraic number fields, which leads to maps on lattices. We characterize renormalizability arithmetically, and study its relationships with a geometrical quantity that we call the drift vector. We exhibit some examples of renormalizable interval exchange maps with zero and non-zero drift vector, and carry out some investigations of their properties. In particular, we look for evidence of the finite decomposition property: each lattice is the union of finitely many orbits.
We construct an appropriate metric on the collection of piecewise $\mathcal C^r$ maps defined on a compact interval. Although this metric space turns out to be not complete, we show that it is indeed a Baire space. As an application, we prove the robustness of non-degenerate critical points for this class of systems and we show the genericity of piecewise Lipschitz maps that admit an invariant Borel probability measure.
We prove a local limit theorem for Lipschitz continuous observables on a weakly coupled lattice of piecewise expanding interval maps. The core of the paper is a proof that the spectral radii of the Fourier-transfer operators for such a system are strictly less than 1. This extends the approach of [KL2] where the ordinary transfer operator was studied.
We consider intermittent maps T of the interval, with an absolutely continuous invariant probability measure μ. Kim showed that there exists a sequence of intervals A_n such that \sum μ(A_n)=\infty, but \{A_n\} does not satisfy the dynamical Borel-Cantelli lemma, i.e., for almost every x, the set \{n : T^n(x)\in A_n\} is finite. If \sum \Leb(A_n)=\infty, we prove that \{A_n\} satisfies the Borel-Cantelli lemma. Our results apply in particular to some maps T whose correlations are not summable.
We construct an invariant measure for a piecewise analytic interval map whose Lyapunov exponent is not defined. Moreover, for a set of full measure, the pointwise Lyapunov exponent is not defined. This map has a Lorenz-like singularity and non-flat critical points.
Recurrence determinism, one of the fundamental characteristics of recurrence quantification analysis, measures predictability of a trajectory of a dynamical system. It is tightly connected with the conditional probability that, given a recurrence, following states of the trajectory will be recurrences. In this paper we study recurrence determinism of interval dynamical systems. We show that recurrence determinism distinguishes three main types of $ω$-limit sets of zero entropy maps: finite, solenoidal without non-separable points, and solenoidal with non-separable points. As a corollary we obt…
The construction of affine interval exchange maps with wandering intervals that are semi-conjugate with a given self-similar interval exchange map is strongly related with the existence of the so called minimal sequences associated with local potentials, which are certain elements of the substitution subshift arising from the given interval exchange map. In this article, under the condition called unique representation property, we characterize such minimal sequences for potentials coming from non-real eigenvalues of the substitution matrix. We also give conditions on the slopes of the affine …
In \cite{B} Bourgain proves that Sarnak's disjointness conjecture holds for a certain class of Three-interval exchange maps. In the present paper we slightly improve the Diophantine condition of Bourgain and estimate the constants in the proof. We further show, that the new parameter set has positive, but not full Hausdorff dimension. This, in particular, implies that the Lebesgue measure of this set is zero.
Starting from any pseudo-Anosov map $φ$ on a surface of genus $g \geqslant 2$, we construct explicitly a family of Derived from pseudo-Anosov maps $f$ by adapting the construction of Smale's Derived from Anosov maps on the two-torus. This is done by perturbing $φ$ at some fixed points. We first consider perturbations at every conical fixed point and then at regular fixed points. We establish the existence of a measure $μ$, supported by the non-trivial unique minimal component of the stable foliation of $f$, with respect to which $f$ is mixing. In the process, we construct a uniquely ergodic Ge…
We study the thermodynamic formalism of sufficiently regular interval maps for Holder continuous potentials. We show that for a hyperbolic potential there is a unique equilibrium state, and that this measure is exponentially mixing. Moreover, we show the absence of phase transitions: The pressure function is real analytic at such a potential.
We construct a $C^r$ transformation of the interval (or the torus) which is topologically mixing but has no invariant measure of maximal entropy. Whereas the assumption of $C^{\infty}$ ensures existence of maximal measures for an interval map, it shows we cannot weaken the smoothness assumption. We also compute the local entropy of the example.
Dynamical systems on the interval were widely studied because they are among the simplest systems and nevertheless they turn out to have complex dynamics. Many works on chaos were inspired by the behaviour of interval maps. However these systems have many properties that are not found on other spaces. As a consequence, one-dimensional dynamics is very rich and worth a separate study. The aim of this book is to survey the relations between the various sorts of chaos and related notions for continuous interval maps. The papers on this topic are numerous but very scattered in the literature, some…
We give an example of a sequential dynamical system consisting of intermittent-type maps which exhibits loss of memory with a polynomial rate of decay. A uniform bound holds for the upper rate of memory loss. The maps may be chosen in any sequence, and the bound holds for all compositions.
Consider a topologically exact $C^3$ interval map without non-flat critical points. Following the works we did in \cite{LiRiv12two}, we give two equivalent characterizations of hyperbolic Hölder continuous potential in terms of the Lyapunov exponents and the measure-theoretic entropies of equilibrium states for those potentials.
In ergodic optimization theory, the existence of sub-actions is an important tool in the study of the so-called optimizing measures. For transformations with regularly varying property, we highlight a class of moduli of continuity which is not compatible with the existence of continuous sub-actions. Our result relies fundamentally on the local behavior of the dynamics near a fixed point and applies to interval maps that are expanding outside an indifferent fixed point, including Manneville-Pomeau and Farey maps.
Let us denote $λ$ the Lebesgue measure on $[0,1]$, put$$ C(λ)=\{f\in C([0,1]);\ \forall~A\subset [0,1], A~\text{Borel}:\ λ(A)=λ(f^{-1}(A))\}.$$ We endow the set $C(λ)$ by the uniform metric $ρ$ and investigate dynamical properties of typical maps in the complete metric space $(C(λ),ρ)$.
In this note we will discuss the notion of robust chaos, and show that (i) there are natural one-parameter families with robust chaos and (ii) hyperbolicity is dense within generic one-parameter families (and so these families are not robustly chaotic).
We consider piecewise expanding maps of the interval with finitely many branches of monotonicity and show that they are generically combinatorially stable, i.e., the number of ergodic attractors and their corresponding mixing periods do not change under small perturbations of the map. Our methods provide a topological description of the attractor and, in particular, give an elementary proof of the density of periodic orbits.
In this paper we investigate multifractal decompositions based on values of Birkhoff averages of functions from a class of symbolically continuous functions. This will be done for an expanding interval map with infinitely many branches and is a generalisation of previous work for expanding maps with finitely many branches. We show that there are substantial differences between this case and the setting where the expanding map has only finitely many branches.
We show that for the generic continuous maps of the interval and circle which preserve the Lebesgue measure it holds for each k $\ge$ 1 that the set of periodic points of period k is a Cantor set of Hausdorff dimension zero and of upper box dimension one. Furthermore, building on this result, we show that there is a dense collection of transitive Lebesgue measure preserving interval map whose periodic points have full Lebesgue measure and whose periodic points of period k have positive measure for each k $\ge$ 1. Finally, we show that the generic continuous maps of the interval which preserve …
We consider Milnor's "tower algorithm" in the space of piecewise monotone maps, an iterative algorithm on the space of metrics which unifies, on the one hand, Thurston's iterative scheme which converges to holomorphic models, and, on the other hand, the theory of piecewise linear models coming from kneading theory. We prove that the algorithm converges for unimodal maps of high entropy, and provide examples where it does not converge for unimodal maps of low entropy and multimodal maps of higher degree.
We prove that, under a mild summability condition on the growth of the derivative on critical orbits any piecewise monotone interval map possibly containing discontinuities and singularities with infinite derivative (cusp map) admits an ergodic invariant probability measures which is absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure.
We associate to each non-degenerate smooth interval map a number measuring its global asymptotic expansion. We show that this number can be calculated in various different ways. A consequence is that several natural notions of nonuniform hyperbolicity coincide. In this way we obtain an extension to interval maps with an arbitrary number of critical points of the remarkable result of Nowicki and Sands characterizing the Collet-Eckmann condition for unicritical maps. This also solves a conjecture of Luzzatto in dimension 1. Combined with a result of Nowicki and Przytycki, these considerations im…
