We use the concept of Baire Ergodicity and Ergodic Formalism introduced to study topological and statistical attractors for interval maps, even with discontinuities. For that we also analyze the {\em wandering intervals attractors}. As a result, we establish the finiteness of the non-periodic topological attractors for piecewise $C^2$ maps with discontinuities. For $C^2$ interval maps without discontinuities, we show the coincidence of the statistical attractors with the topological ones and we calculate the upper Birkhoff averages of continuous functions for generic points, even when the map has abundance of historical behavior.
We consider piecewise $C^2$ non-flat maps of the interval and show that, for Lebesgue almost every point, its omega-limit set is either a periodic orbit, a cycle of intervals or the closure of the orbits of a subset of the critical points. In particular, every piecewise $C^2$ non-flat map of the interval displays only a finite number of non-periodic attractors.
For a non-flat $C^3$ unimodal map with a Cantor attractor, we show that for any open cover $\mathcal U$ of this attractor, the complexity function $p(\mathcal U, n)$ is of order $n\log n$. In the appendix, we construct a non-renormalizable map with a Cantor attractor for which $p(\mathcal{U}, n)$ is bounded from above for any open cover $\mathcal{U}$.
We consider piecewise expanding maps of the interval with finitely many branches of monotonicity and show that they are generically combinatorially stable, i.e., the number of ergodic attractors and their corresponding mixing periods do not change under small perturbations of the map. Our methods provide a topological description of the attractor and, in particular, give an elementary proof of the density of periodic orbits.
We classify the measure theoretic attractors of general C^3 unimodal maps with quadratic critical points. The main ingredient is the decay of geometry.
In this paper we investigate how many periodic attractors maps in a small neighbourhood of a given map can have. For this purpose we develop new tools which help to make uniform cross-ratio distortion estimates in a neighbourhood of a map with degenerate critical points.
Since the proof, at the end of the 80's, of the finiteness of the number of attractors for $C^3$ maps of the interval having negative Schwarzian derivative, it has been generally considered that the same result could be true for maps with discontinuities. In the present paper we show that this is indeed the case.
We study the non-wandering set of contracting Lorenz maps. We show that if such a map $f$ doesn't have any attracting periodic orbit, then there is a unique topological attractor. Precisely, there is a compact set $Λ$ such that $ω_f(x)=Λ$ for a residual set of points $x \in [0,1]$. Furthermore, we classify the possible kinds of attractors that may occur.
In the present paper we focus on the problem of the existence of strange pseudohyperbolic attractors for three-dimensional diffeomorphisms. Such attractors are genuine strange attractors in that sense that each orbit in the attractor has a positive maximal Lyapunov exponents and this property is robust, i.e. it holds for all close systems. We restrict attention to the study of pseudohyperbolic attractors that contain only one fixed point. Then we show that three-dimensional maps may have only 5 different types of such attractors, which we call the discrete Lorenz, figure-8, double-figure-8, su…
For a two parameter family of two-dimensional piecewise linear maps and for every natural number $ n $ we prove not only the existence of intervals of parameters for which the respective maps are $ n $ times renormalizable but also we show the existence of intervals of parameters where the coexistence of at least $ 2^n $ strange attractors takes place. This family of maps contains the two-dimensional extension of the classical one-dimensional family of tent maps.
We demonstrate the existence of a global attractor A with a Cantor set structure for the renormalization of critical circle mappings. The set A is invariant under a generalized renormalization transformation, whose action on A is conjugate to the two-sided shift.
We show that resonance zones near an elliptic periodic point of a reversible map must, generically, contain asymptotically stable and asymptotically unstable periodic orbits, along with wild hyperbolic sets.
We shall address the alternative definition of chain recurrent set for the action of a semigroup of continuous self maps, given by M. Hurley \cite {mh} in noncompact space. Following this, we shall address the characterization of chain recurrence in terms of attractors given by C. Conley in \cite {conley}.
We provide an example of Cherry flow (i.e. smooth flow on the $2$-dimensional torus with a sink and a saddle) having quasi-minimal set which is an attractor. The first return map for such a flow, constructed also in the paper, is a smooth circle map having a flat interval and a non-trivial wandering interval.

We show how a parameterized family of maps of the spine of a manifold can be used to construct a family of homeomorphisms of the ambient manifold which have the inverse limits of the spine maps as global attractors. We describe applications to unimodal families of interval maps, to rotation sets, and to the standard family of circle maps.
We study the asymptotic dynamics of piecewise contracting maps defined on a compact interval. For maps that are not necessarily injective, but have a finite number of local extrema and discontinuity points, we prove the existence of a decomposition of the support of the asymptotic dynamics into a finite number of minimal components. Each component is either a periodic orbit or a minimal Cantor set and such that the $ω$-limit set of (almost) every point in the interval is exactly one of these components. Moreover, we show that each component is the $ω$-limit set, or the closure of the orbit, of…
For a smooth manifold of any dimension greater than one, we present an open set of smooth endomorphisms such that any of them has a transitive attractor with a non-empty interior. These maps are $m$-fold non-branched coverings, $m \ge 3$. The construction applies to any manifold of the form $S^1 \times M$, where $S^1$ is the standard circle and $M$ is an arbitrary manifold.
The aim of this paper is to prove the existence and qualitative property of random attractors for a stochastic nonlocal delayed reaction-diffusion equation (SNDRDE) on a semi-infinite interval with a Dirichlet boundary condition on the finite end. This equation models the spatial-temporal evolution of the mature individuals for a two-stage species whose juvenile and adults both diffuse that lives on a semi-infinite domain and subject to random perturbations. By transforming the SNDRDE into a random evolution equation with delay, by means of a stationary conjugate transformation, we first estab…
We consider an orientation preserving homeomorphism $h$ of $S^2$ which admits a repellor denoted $\infty$ and an attractor $-\infty$, which is not a North-South map, such that the basins of $\infty$ and $-\infty$ intersect. We study various aspects of the rotation number of $h:S^2\setminus\{\pm\infty\}\to S^2\setminus\{\pm\infty\}$, especially its relationship with the existence of periodic orbits.
Special $α$-limit sets ($sα$-limit sets) combine together all accumulation points of all backward orbit branches of a point $x$ under a noninvertible map. The most important question about them is whether or not they are closed. We challenge the notion of $sα$-limit sets as backward attractors for interval maps by showing that they need not be closed. This disproves a conjecture by Kolyada, Misiurewicz, and Snoha. We give a criterion in terms of Xiong's attracting center that completely characterizes which interval maps have all $sα$-limit sets closed, and we show that our criterion is satisfi…
We propose an approach to the attractors of skew products that tries to avoid unnecessary structures on the base space and rejects the assumption on the invariance of an attractor. When nonivertible maps in the base are allowed, one can encounter the mystery of the vanishing attractor. In the second part of the paper, we show that if the fiber maps are concave interval maps then contraction in the fibers does not depend on the map in the base.
We show that special perturbations of a particular holomorphic map on $\mathbf{P}^k$ give us examples of maps that possess chaotic nonalgebraic attractors. Furthermore, we study the dynamics of the maps on the attractors. In particular, we construct invariant hyperbolic measures supported on the attractors with nice dynamical properties.
The Milnor problem on one-dimensional attractors is solved for S-unimodal maps with a non-degenerate critical point c. It provides us with a complete understanding of the possible limit behavior for Lebesgue almost every point. This theorem follows from a geometric study of the critical set $ω(c)$ of a "non-renormalizable" map. It is proven that the scaling factors characterizing the geometry of this set go down to 0 at least exponentially. This resolves the problem of the non-linearity control in small scales. The proofs strongly involve ideas from renormalization theory and holomorphic dynam…
We study bifurcation mechanisms for the appearance of hyperchaotic attractors in three-dimensional diffeomorphisms, i.e., such attractors whose orbits have two positive Lyapunov exponents in numerical experiments. In order to possess this property periodic orbits belonging to the attractor should have two-dimensional unstable invariant manifolds. For realization of this possibility, we propose several bifurcation scenarios that include cascades of both supercritical period-doubling bifurcations with saddle periodic orbits and supercritical Neimark-Sacker bifurcations with stable periodic orbit…
Piecewise Translations is a class of dynamical systems which arises from some applications in computer science, machine learning, and electrical engineering. In dimension 1 it can also be viewed as a non-invertible generalization of Interval Exchange Transformations. These dynamical systems still possess some features of Interval Exchanges but the total volume is no longer preserved and allowed to decay. Every Piecewise Translation has a well-defined attracting subset which is the locus of our interest. We prove some results about how fast the dynamics lock onto the attractor, geometry of the …
We study dynamical properties of generalized Bowen-Series boundary maps associated to cocompact torsion-free Fuchsian groups. These maps are defined on the unit circle (the boundary of the Poincaré disk) by the generators of the group and have a finite set of discontinuities. We study the two forward orbits of each discontinuity point and show that for a family of such maps the cycle property holds: the orbits coincide after finitely many steps. We also show that for an open set of discontinuity points the associated two-dimensional natural extension maps possess global attractors with finite …
Lorenz attractors play an important role in the modern theory of dynamical systems. The reason is that they are robust, i.e. preserve their chaotic properties under various kinds of perturbations. This means that such attractors can exist in applied models and be observed in experiments. It is known that discrete Lorenz attractors can appear in local and global bifurcations of multidimensional diffeomorphisms. However, to date, only partial cases were investigated. In this paper bifurcations of homoclinic and heteroclinic cycles with quadratic tangencies of invariant manifolds are studied. A f…
We study non-invertible piecewise hyperbolic maps in the plane. The Hausdorff dimension of the attractor is calculated in terms of the Lyapunov exponents, provided that the map satisfies a transversality condition. Explicit examples of maps for which this condition holds are given.
We show that there exist real quadratic maps of the interval whose attractors are computationally intractable. This is the first known class of such natural examples.
We show that if $f$ is an annular homeomorphism admitting an attractor which is an irreducible annular continua with two different rotation numbers, then the entropy of $f$ is positive. Further, the entropy is shown to be associated to a $C^0$-robust rotational horseshoe. On the other hand, we construct examples of annular homeomorphisms with such attractors so that the rotation interval is uniformly large but the entropy approaches zero as much as desired. The developed techniques allow us to obtain similar results in the context of Birkhoff attractors.
It was established in 2006 that bifurcations of three-dimensional diffeomorphisms with a homoclinic tangency to a saddle-focus fixed point with the Jacobian equal to 1 can lead to Lorenz-like strange attractors. In the present paper we prove an analogous result for three-dimensional diffeomorphisms with a homoclinic tangency to a saddle fixed point with the Jacobian equal to 1, provided the quadratic homoclinic tangency under consideration is non-simple.
Stimulated by recent problems in the theory of iterated function systems, we provide a variant of the Banach converse theorem for multivalued maps. In particular, we show that attractors of continuous multivalued maps in a metric space are stable. Moreover, such attractors in locally compact, complete metric spaces may be obtained by means of the Banach theorem in the hyperspace.
As the parameters of a map are varied an attractor may vary continuously in the Hausdorff metric. The purpose of this paper is to explore the continuation of chaotic attractors. We argue that this is not a helpful concept for smooth unimodal maps for which periodic windows fill parameter space densely, but that for piecewise-smooth maps it provides a way to delineate structure within parameter regions of robust chaos and form a stronger notion of robustness. We obtain conditions for the continuity of an attractor and demonstrate the results with coupled skew tent maps, the Lozi map, and the bo…
It is known that nonuniformly hyperbolic maps admitting singularities have at most countably many ergodic Sinai-Ruelle-Bowen (SRB) measures. These maps include the Belykh attractor, the geometric Lorenz attractor, and more general Lorenz-type systems. In this paper, we establish easily verifiable sufficient conditions guaranteeing that the number of ergodic SRB measures is at most finite, and provide examples and nonexamples showing that the conditions are necessary in general.
A discrete dynamical system in Euclidean m-space generated by the iterates of an asymptotically zero map f, satisfying f(x) goes to zero as x goes to infinity, must have a compact global attracting set $A $. The question of what additional hypotheses are sufficient to guarantee that A has a minimal (invariant) subset A* that is a chaotic strange attractor is answered in detail for a few types of asymptotically zero maps. These special cases happen to have many applications (especially as mathematical models for a variety of processes in ecological and population dynamics), some of which are pr…
We consider dynamical systems given by interval maps with a finite number of turning points (including critical points, discontinuities) possibly of different critical orders from two sides. If such a map $f$ is continuous and piecewise $C^2$, satisfying negative Schwarzian derivative and some summability conditions on the growth of derivatives and recurrence along the turning orbits, then $f$ has finitely many attractors whose union of basins of attraction has total probability, and each attractor supports an absolutely continuous invariant probability measure $μ$. Over each attractor there e…
Let $\{f_t\}_{t\in(1,2]}$ be the family of core tent maps of slopes $t$. The parameterized Barge-Martin construction yields a family of disk homeomorphisms $Φ_t\colon D^2\to D^2$, having transitive global attractors $Λ_t$ on which $Φ_t$ is topologically conjugate to the natural extension of $f_t$. The unique family of absolutely continuous invariant measures for $f_t$ induces a family of ergodic $Φ_t$-invariant measures $ν_t$, supported on the attractors $Λ_t$. We show that this family $ν_t$ varies weakly continuously, and that the measures $ν_t$ are physical with respect to a weakly continuou…
We describe scenarios for the emergence of Shilnikov attractors, i.e. strange attractors containing a saddle-focus with two-dimensional unstable manifold, in the case of three-dimensional flows and maps. The presented results are illustrated with various specific examples.
We consider strange attractors of two dimensional generalized map with one nonlinearity such that Lozi, Hénon and Belykh maps are particular cases of it. We describe technique of invariant expanding and contracting cones creation for study of hyperbolic properties. Theorems of singular hyperbolic attractors for new modifications of Lozi, Hénon and Belykh-type maps are presented.
We study a two-parameter family of one-dimensional maps and related (a,b)-continued fractions suggested for consideration by Don Zagier. We prove that the associated natural extension maps have attractors with finite rectangular structure for the entire parameter set except for a Cantor-like set of one-dimensional Lebesgue zero measure that we completely describe. We show that the structure of these attractors can be "computed" from the data (a,b), and that for a dense open set of parameters the Reduction theory conjecture holds, i.e. every point is mapped to the attractor after finitely many …
We study the asymptotic dynamics of maps which are piecewise contracting on a compact space. These maps are Lipschitz continuous, with Lipschitz constant smaller than one, when restricted to any piece of a finite and dense union of disjoint open pieces. We focus on the topological and the dynamical properties of the (global) attractor of the orbits that remain in this union. As a starting point, we show that the attractor consists of a finite set of periodic points when it does not intersect the boundary of a contraction piece, which complements similar results proved for more specific classes…
We describe the behavior of solutions of switched systems with multiple globally exponentially stable equilibria. We introduce an ideal attractor and show that the solutions of the switched system stay in any given $\varepsilon$-inflation of the ideal attractor if the frequency of switchings is slower than a suitable dwell time $T$. In addition, we give conditions to ensure that the $\varepsilon$-inflation is a global attractor. Finally, we investigate the effect of the increase of the number of switchings on the total time that the solutions need to go from one region to another.
A one-dimensional confined Nonlinear Random Walk is a tuple of $N$ diffeomorphisms of the unit interval driven by a probabilistic Markov chain. For generic such walks, we obtain a geometric characterization of their ergodic stationary measures and prove that all of them have negative Lyapunov exponents. These measures appear to be probabilistic manifestations of physical measures for certain deterministic dynamical systems. These systems are step skew products over transitive subshifts of finite type (topological Markov chains) with the unit interval fiber. For such skew products, we show ther…
In this paper we give an elementary treatment of the dynamics of skew tent maps. We divide the two-parameter space into six regions. Two of these regions are further subdivided into infinitely many regions. All of the regions are given explicitly. We find the attractor in each subregion, determine whether the attractor is a periodic orbit or is chaotic, and also determine the asymptotic fate of every point. We find that when the attractor is chaotic, it is either a single interval or the disjoint union of a finite number of intervals; when it is a periodic orbit, all periods are possible. Some…
Lorenz attractors are important objects in the modern theory of chaos. The reason from one side is that they are met in various natural applications (fluid dynamics, mechanics, laser dynamics, etc.). At the same time, Lorenz attractors are robust, in the sense that they are generally not destroyed by small perturbations (autonomous, non-autonomous, stochastic). This allows us to be sure that the observed in the experiment object is exactly the chaotic attractor, rather than a long-time periodic orbit. Discrete-time analogs of the Lorenz attractor possess even more complicated structure -- they…
We show that attractors are semicontinuous for closed relations on compact Hausdorff spaces. Semicontinuity is what guarantees that small changes to a system do not result in massive growth of certain features, notably attractors. That is, there is a certain preservation of structure. When it comes to flows, semiflows, and maps, it is well established that attractors are semicontinuous. In [2], relations were established as a way to generalize maps, and a formal definition of attractors was established. Relations (in the dynamical systems sense) represent discrete time systems, which may lack …
We establish an equivalence between infinitely many asymptotically stable periodic solutions and subsumed homoclinic connections for $N$-dimensional piecewise-linear continuous maps. These features arise as a codimension-three phenomenon. The periodic solutions are single-round: they each involve one excursion away from a central saddle-type periodic solution. The homoclinic connection is subsumed in the sense that one branch of the unstable manifold of the saddle solution is contained entirely within its stable manifold. The results are proved by using exact expressions for the periodic solut…

The occurrence of strange non-chaotic attractors (SNA) in quasiperiodically forced systems has attracted considerable interest over the last two decades, in particular since it provides a rich class of examples for the possibility of complicated dynamics in the absence of chaos. Their existence was discovered in the early 1980's, independently by Herman for quasiperiodic SL(2,R)-cocycles and by Grebogi et al for so-called 'pinched skew products'. However, except for these two particular classes there are still hardly any rigorous results on the topic, despite a large number of numerical studie…
A generalized attracting horseshoe is introduced as a new paradigm for describing chaotic strange attractors (of arbitrary finite rank) for smooth and piecewise smooth maps f from Q to Q, where Q is a homeomorph of the unit interval in real m-space for any integer m > 1. The main theorems for generalized attracting horseshoes are shown to apply to Henon and Lozi maps, thereby leading to rather simple new chaotic strange attractor existence proofs that apply to a range of parameter values that includes those of earlier proofs.
