The Milnor problem on one-dimensional attractors is solved for S-unimodal maps with a non-degenerate critical point c. It provides us with a complete understanding of the possible limit behavior for Lebesgue almost every point. This theorem follows from a geometric study of the critical set $ω(c)$ of a "non-renormalizable" map. It is proven that the scaling factors characterizing the geometry of this set go down to 0 at least exponentially. This resolves the problem of the non-linearity control in small scales. The proofs strongly involve ideas from renormalization theory and holomorphic dynamics.
We show that in a generic finite-dimensional real-analytic family of real-analytic multimodal maps, the subset of parameters on which the corresponding map has a solenoidal attractor with bounded combinatorics is a set with zero Lebesgue measure.
This work studies combinatorics and geometry of the Yoccoz puzzle for quadratic polynomials. It is proven that the moduli of the ``principal nest'' of annuli grow at linear rate. As a corollary we obtain complex a priori bounds and local connectivity of the Julia set for many infinitely renormalizable quadratics.
We show that there exist real quadratic maps of the interval whose attractors are computationally intractable. This is the first known class of such natural examples.
The definition of principal nest is supplemented with a system of frames that make possible the classification of combinatorial types for every level of the nest. As a consequence, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the admissibility of a type and prove that given a sequence of non-renormalizable finite admissible types, there is a quadratic polynomial whose nest realizes the sequence.
Let $Φ$ be a quasi-periodically forced quadratic map, where the rotation constant $ω$ is a Diophantine irrational. A strange non-chaotic attractor (SNA) is an invariant (under $Φ$) attracting graph of a nowhere continuous measurable function $ψ$ from the circle $\mathbb{T}$ to $[0,1]$. This paper investigates how a smooth attractor degenerates into a strange one, as a parameter $β$ approaches a critical value $β_0$, and the asymptotics behind the bifurcation of the attractor from smooth to strange. In our model, the cause of the strange attractor is a so-called torus collision, whereby an attr…
We classify the measure theoretic attractors of general C^3 unimodal maps with quadratic critical points. The main ingredient is the decay of geometry.
This study introduces a modified quadratic Lorenz attractor. The properties of this new chaotic system are analysed and discussed in detail, by determining the equilibria points, the eigenvalues of the Jacobian, and the Lyapunov exponents. The numerical simulations, the time series analysis, and the projections to the $xy$-plane, $xz$-plane, and $yz$-plane are conducted to highlight the chaotic behaviour. The multiplicative form of the new system is also presented and the simulations are conducted using multiplicative Runge-Kutta methods.
Let $\bm p_0,...,\bm p_{m-1}$ be points in ${\mathbb R}^d$, and let $\{f_j\}_{j=0}^{m-1}$ be a one-parameter family of similitudes of ${\mathbb R}^d$: $$ f_j(\bm x) = λ\bm x + (1-λ)\bm p_j, j=0,...,m-1, $$ where $λ\in(0,1)$ is our parameter. Then, as is well known, there exists a unique self-similar attractor $S_λ$ satisfying $S_λ=\bigcup_{j=0}^{m-1} f_j(S_λ)$. Each $\bm x\in S_λ$ has at least one address $(i_1,i_2,...)\in\prod_1^\infty\{0,1,...,m-1\}$, i.e., $\lim_n f_{i_1}f_{i_2}... f_{i_n}({\bf 0})=\bm x$. We show that for $λ$ sufficiently close to 1, each $\bm x\in S_λ\setminus\{\bm p_0,..…
We extend Sullivan's complex a priori bounds to real quadratic polynomials with essentially bounded combinatorics. Combined with the previous results of the first author, this yields complex bounds for all real quadratics. Local connectivity of the corresponding Julia sets follows.
Let ${\cal H}$ be a hyperbolic component of quadratic rational maps possessing two distinct attracting cycles. We show that ${\cal H}$ has compact closure in moduli space if and only if neither attractor is a fixed point.
Lorenz attractors are important objects in the modern theory of chaos. The reason from one side is that they are met in various natural applications (fluid dynamics, mechanics, laser dynamics, etc.). At the same time, Lorenz attractors are robust, in the sense that they are generally not destroyed by small perturbations (autonomous, non-autonomous, stochastic). This allows us to be sure that the observed in the experiment object is exactly the chaotic attractor, rather than a long-time periodic orbit. Discrete-time analogs of the Lorenz attractor possess even more complicated structure -- they…
We study bifurcations of periodic orbits in three parameter general unfoldings of certain types quadratic homoclinic tangencies to saddle fixed points. We apply the rescaling technique to first return (Poincaré) maps and show that the rescaled maps can be brought to a map asymptotically close to the 3D Henon map $\bar x=y,\bar y=z,\bar z = M_1 + M_2 y + B x - z^2$ which, as known, exhibits wild hyperbolic Lorenz-like attractors in some open domains of the parameters. Based on this, we prove the existence of infinite cascades of Lorenz-like attractors.
It was established in 2006 that bifurcations of three-dimensional diffeomorphisms with a homoclinic tangency to a saddle-focus fixed point with the Jacobian equal to 1 can lead to Lorenz-like strange attractors. In the present paper we prove an analogous result for three-dimensional diffeomorphisms with a homoclinic tangency to a saddle fixed point with the Jacobian equal to 1, provided the quadratic homoclinic tangency under consideration is non-simple.
We consider perturbations of quadratic maps $f_a$ admitting an absolutely continuous invariant probability measure, where $a$ is in a certain positive measure set $\mathcal{A}$ of parameters, and show that in any neighborhood of any such an $f_a$, we find a rich fauna of dynamics. There are maps with periodic attractors as well as non-periodic maps whose critical orbit is absorbed by the continuation of any prescribed hyperbolic repeller of $f_a$. In particular, Misiurewicz maps are dense in $\mathcal{A}$. Almost all maps $f_a$ in the quadratic family is known to possess a unique natural measu…
Newhouse laminations occur in unfoldings of rank-one homoclinic tangencies. Namely, in these unfoldings, there exist codimension $2$ laminations of maps with infinitely many sinks which move simultaneously along the leaves. As consequence, in the space of real polynomial maps, there are examples of: Hénon maps, in any dimension, with infinitely many sinks, quadratic Hénon-like maps with infinitely many sinks and a period doubling attractor, quadratic Hénon-like maps with infinitely many sinks and a strange attractor, non trivial analytic families of polynomial maps with infinitely many sinks.
Lorenz attractors play an important role in the modern theory of dynamical systems. The reason is that they are robust, i.e. preserve their chaotic properties under various kinds of perturbations. This means that such attractors can exist in applied models and be observed in experiments. It is known that discrete Lorenz attractors can appear in local and global bifurcations of multidimensional diffeomorphisms. However, to date, only partial cases were investigated. In this paper bifurcations of homoclinic and heteroclinic cycles with quadratic tangencies of invariant manifolds are studied. A f…
A study of real quadratic maps with real critical points, emphasizing the effective construction of critically finite maps with specified combinatorics. We discuss the behavior of the Thurston algorithm in obstructed cases, and in one exceptional badly behaved case, and provide a new description of the appropriate moduli spaces. There is also an application to topological entropy.
In this work, we relate the geometry of chaotic attractors of typical analytic unimodal maps to the behavior of the critical orbit. Our main result is an explicit formula relating the combinatorics of the critical orbit with the exponents of periodic orbits. This connection between topological and smooth invariants is obtained through an analysis of the physical measure. Since the exponents of periodic orbits form a complete set of smooth invariants in this setting, we have ``typical geometric rigidity'' of the dynamics of such chaotic attractors. This unexpected result implies that the lamina…
We continue the study of straightening maps for the family of polynomials of degree $d \ge 3$. The notion of straightening map is originally introduced by Douady and Hubbard to study relationship between polynomial-like renormalizations and self-similarity of the Mandelbrot set. In the quadratic case, straightening maps are always continuous, and this is one of the critical steps to prove the Mandelbrot set has small copies in itself. On the other hand, for higher degree case, we do not have such a nice self-similar property: As expected from an example of a cubic-like family with discontinuou…
We prove that non-hyperbolic non-renormalizable quadratic polynomials are expansion inducing. For renormalizable polynomials a counterpart of this statement is that in the case of unbounded combinatorics renormalized mappings become almost quadratic. Technically, this follows from the decay of the box geometry. Specific estimates of the rate of this decay are shown which are sharp in a class of S-unimodal mappings combinatorially related to rotations of bounded type. We use real methods based on cross-ratios and Schwarzian derivative complemented by complex-analytic estimates in terms of confo…
Lorenz maps are maps of the unit interval with one critical point of order rho>1, and a discontinuity at that point. They appear as return maps of leafs of sections of the geometric Lorenz flow. We construct real a priori bounds for renormalizable Lorenz maps with certain monotone combinatorics, and use these bounds to show existence of periodic points of renormalization, as well as existence of Cantor attractors for dynamics of infinitely renormalizable Lorenz maps.
In this paper, we study a two-parameter family of two-dimensional diffeomorphisms such that it has a cubic homoclinic tangency unfolding generically which is associated with a dissipative saddle point. Our first theorem presents an open set in the parameter-plane such that, for any parameter value in the open set, there exists a one-parameter subfamily through this value exhibiting cubically related persistent contact-making and contact-breaking quadratic tangencies. Moreover, the second theorem shows that any such two-parameter family satisfies Wang-Young's conditions which guarantee that it …
In this paper using approach of 1-D auxiliary maps we prove the existence of trapping domains containing attractors of the multidimensional Henon-like maps. For both of quadratic and cubic nonlinearities we obtain sufficient conditions of topological Smale horseshoes existence. The complex structure of attractors is discussed in the case of small coupling parameter.
We consider linear iterated function systems (IFS) with a constant contraction ratio in the plane for which the "overlap set" $\Ok$ is finite, and which are "invertible" on the attractor $A$, the sense that there is a continuous surjection $q: A\to A$ whose inverse branches are the contractions of the IFS. The overlap set is the critical set in the sense that $q$ is not a local homeomorphism precisely at $\Ok$. We suppose also that there is a rational function $p$ with the Julia set $J$ such that $(A,q)$ and $(J,p)$ are conjugate. We prove that if $A$ has bounded turning and $p$ has no parabol…
We give examples of infinitely renormalizable quadratic polynomials $F_c: z\maps to z^2+c$ with stationary combinatorics whose Julia sets have Hausdorff dimension arbitrar y close to 1. The combinatorics of the renormalization involved is close to the Chebyshev one . The argument is based upon a new tool, a ``Recursive Quadratic Estimate'' for the Poincaré series of an infinitely re normalizable map.
A decoration of the Mandelbrot set $M$ is a part of $M$ cut off by two external rays landing at some tip of a satellite copy of $M$ attached to the main cardioid. In this paper we consider infinitely renormalizable quadratic polynomials satisfying the decoration condition, which means that the combinatorics of the renormalization operators involved is selected from a finite family of decorations. For this class of maps we prove {\it a priori} bounds. They imply local connectivity of the corresponding Julia sets and the Mandelbrot set at the corresponding parameter values.
We study the parameter space structure of degree $d \ge 3$ one complex variable polynomials as dynamical systems acting on $\C$. We introduce and study {\it straightening maps}. These maps are a natural higher degree generalization of the ones introduced by Douady and Hubbard to prove the existence of small copies of the Mandelbrot set inside itself. We establish that straightening maps are always injective and that their image contains all the corresponding hyperbolic systems. Also, we characterize straightening maps with compact domain. Moreover, we give two classes of bijective straightenin…
We extend Thurston's combinatorial criterion for postcritically finite rational maps to a class of rational maps with bounded type Siegel disks. The combinatorial characterization of this class of Siegel rational maps plays a special role in the study of general Siegel rational maps. As one of the applications, we prove that for any quadratic rational map with a bounded type Siegel disk, the boundary of the Siegel disk is a quasi-circle which passes through one or both of the critical points.
We consider random dynamical systems generated by a special class of Volterra quadratic stochastic operators on the simplex $S^{m-1}$. We prove that in contrast to the deterministic set-up the trajectories of the random dynamical system almost surely converge to one of the vertices of the simplex $S^{m-1}$ implying the survival of only one species. We also show that the minimal random point attractor of the system equals the set of all vertices. The convergence proof relies on a martingale-type limit theorem which we prove in the appendix.
In this paper we describe the well studied process of renormalization of quadratic polynomials from the point of view of their natural extensions. In particular, we describe the topology of the inverse limit of infinitely renormalizable quadratic polynomials and prove that when they satisfy a-priori bounds, the topology is rigid modulo its combinatorics.
A critical transition for a system modelled by a concave quadratic scalar ordinary differential equation occurs when a small variation of the coefficients changes dramatically the dynamics, from the existence of an attractor-repeller pair of hyperbolic solutions to the lack of bounded solutions. In this paper, a tool to analyze this phenomenon for asymptotically nonautonomous ODEs with bounded uniformly continuous or bounded piecewise uniformly continuous coefficients is described, and used to determine the occurrence of critical transitions for certain parametric equations. Some numerical exp…
This article discusses the search procedure for the Poincaré recurrences to classify solutions on an attractor of a fourth-order nonlinear dynamical system using a previously developed high-precision numerical method. For the resulting limiting solution, the Lyapunov exponents are calculated using the modified Benettin's algorithm to study the stability of the found regime and confirm the type of attractor.
This paper is an exposition, with some new applications, of our results on the growth of entropy of convolutions. We explain the main result on $\mathbb{R}$, and derive, via a linearization argument, an analogous result for the action of the affine group on $\mathbb{R}$. We also develop versions of the results for entropy dimension and Hausdorff dimension. The method is applied to two problems on the border of fractal geometry and additive combinatorics. First, we consider attractors $X$ of compact families $Φ$ of similarities of $\mathbb{R}$. We conjecture that if $Φ$ is uncountable and $X$ i…
This paper reports the finding of a simple one-parameter family of three-dimensional quadratic autonomous chaotic systems. By tuning the only parameter, this system can continuously generate a variety of cascading Lorenz-like attractors, which appears to be richer than the unified chaotic system that contains the Lorenz and the Chen systems as its two extremes. Although this new family of chaotic systems has very rich and complex dynamics, it has a very simple algebraic structure with only two quadratic terms (same as the Lorenz and the Chen systems) and all nonzero coefficients in the linear …
Considering random noise in finite dimensional parameterized families of diffeomorphisms of a compact finite dimensional boundaryless manifold M, we show the existence of time averages for almost every orbit of each point of M, imposing mild conditions on the families. Moreover these averages are given by a finite number of physical absolutely continuous stationary probability measures. We use this result to deduce that situations with infinitely many sinks and Henon-like attractors are not stable under random perturbations, e.g., Newhouse's and Colli's phenomena in the generic unfolding of a …
We calculate rigorous bounds on the Hausdorff dimension of the attractor at the accumulation of the period-doubling cascade for families of maps with quadratic, cubic, and quartic critical point. To do this, we express the attractors as the limit sets of appropriate Iterated Function Systems constructed using rigorous bounds on the corresponding renormalisation fixed point functions. We use interval arithmetic with rigorous directed rounding modes to show that the respective dimensions lie in subintervals of the intervals (0.5370,0.5392), (0.6040,0.6091), and (0.6395,0.6474).
We study quadratic skew-products with parameters driven over piecewise expanding and Markov interval maps with countable many inverse branches, a generalization of the class of maps introduced by Viana. In particular we construct a class of multidimensional non-uniformly expanding attractors that exhibit both critical points and discontinuities and prove existence and uniqueness of an SRB measure with stretched-exponential decay of correlations, stretched-exponential large deviations and satisfying some limit laws. Moreover, generically such maps admit the coexistence of a dense subset of poin…
We describe the statistical properties of the dynamics of the quadratic polynomials P_a(z):=e^{2πa i} z+z^2 on the complex plane, with a of high return times. In particular, we show that these maps are uniquely ergodic on their measure theoretic attractors, and the unique invariant probability is a physical measure describing the statistical behavior of typical orbits in the Julia set. This confirms a conjecture of Perez-Marco on the unique ergodicity of hedgehog dynamics, in this class of maps.
We describe the topological behavior of typical orbits of complex quadratic polynomials P_alpha(z)=e^{2πi alpha} z+z^2, with alpha of high return type. Here we prove that for such Brjuno values of alpha the closure of the critical orbit, which is the measure theoretic attractor of the map, has zero area. Then combining with Part I of this work, we show that the limit set of the orbit of a typical point in the Julia set is equal to the closure of the critical orbit.
We prove the uniform hyperbolicity of the near-parabolic renormalization operators acting on an infinite-dimensional space of holomorphic transformations. This implies the universality of the scaling laws, conjectured by physicists in the 70's, for a combinatorial class of bifurcations. Through near-parabolic renormalizations the polynomial-like renormalizations of satellite type are successfully studied here for the first time, and new techniques are introduced to analyze the fine-scale dynamical features of maps with such infinite renormalization structures. In particular, we confirm the rig…
We investigate the quantitative and analytic aspects of the near-parabolic renormalization scheme introduced by Inou and Shishikura in 2006. These provide techniques to study the dynamics of some holomorphic maps of the form $f(z) = e^{2πi α} z + \mathcal{O}(z^2)$, including the quadratic polynomials $e^{2πi α} z+z^2$, for some irrational values of $α$. The main results of the paper concern fine-scale features of the measure-theoretic attractors of these maps, and their dependence on the data. As a bi-product, we establish an optimal upper bound on the size of the maximal linearization domain …
Interval exchange maps are related to geodesic flows on translation surfaces; they correspond to the first return maps of the vertical flow on a transverse segment. The Rauzy-Veech induction on the space of interval exchange maps provides a powerful tool to analyze the Teichmueller geodesic flow on the moduli space of Abelian differentials. Several major results have been proved using this renormalization. Danthony and Nogueira introduced in 1988 a natural generalization of interval exchange transformations, namely the linear involutions. These maps are related to general measured foliations o…
