We extend Sullivan's complex a priori bounds to real quadratic polynomials with essentially bounded combinatorics. Combined with the previous results of the first author, this yields complex bounds for all real quadratics. Local connectivity of the corresponding Julia sets follows.
We study quadratic, volume preserving diffeomorphisms whose inverse is also quadratic. Such maps generalize the Hénon area preserving map and the family of symplectic quadratic maps studied by Moser. In particular, we investigate a family of quadratic volume preserving maps in three space for which we find a normal form and study invariant sets. We also give an alternative proof of a theorem by Moser classifying quadratic symplectic maps.
A sufficient geometrical condition for the existence of absolutely continuous invariant probability measures for S-unimodal maps will be discussed. The Lebesgue typical existence of such measures in the quadratic family will be a consequence.
Let ${\cal H}$ be a hyperbolic component of quadratic rational maps possessing two distinct attracting cycles. We show that ${\cal H}$ has compact closure in moduli space if and only if neither attractor is a fixed point.
We show that the topological entropy is monotonic for unimodal interval maps which are obtained from the restriction of quadratic rational maps with real coefficients. This is done by ruling out the existence of certain post-critical curves in the moduli space of aforementioned maps, and confirms a conjecture made in [Fil19] based on experimental evidence.
We consider skew-products of quadratic maps over certain Misiurewicz-Thurston maps and study their statistical properties. We prove that, when the coupling function is a polynomial of odd degree, such a system admits two positive Lyapunov exponents almost everywhere and a unique absolutely continuous invariant probability measure.
In this paper, we give a positive answer to the open question: Can there exist 4 limit cycles in quadratic near-integrable polynomial systems? It is shown that when a quadratic integrable system has two centers and is perturbed by quadratic polynomials, it can generate at least 4 limit cycles with (3,1) distribution. The method of Melnikov function is used.
We study bifurcations of non-orientable area-preserving maps with quadratic homoclinic tangencies. We study the case when the maps are given on non-orientable two-dimensional surfaces. We consider one and two parameter general unfoldings and establish results related to the emergence of elliptic periodic orbits.
We study numerically the $α$- and $ω$-limits of the Newton maps of two of the most elementary families of polynomial transformations on the plane: those with a linear component and those with both components of degree two. Our results are fully consistent with some conjectures we posed in a recent work about the dynamics of Newton maps.
This will is an expository description of quadratic rational maps. Sections 2 through 6 are concerned with the geometry and topology of such maps. Sections 7--10 survey of some topics from the dynamics of quadratic rational maps. There are few proofs. Section 9 attempts to explore and picture moduli space by means of complex one-dimensional slices. Section 10 describes the theory of real quadratic rational maps. For convenience in exposition, some technical details have been relegated to appendices: Appendix A outlines some classical algebra. Appendix B describes the topology of the space of r…
We prove that almost every non-regular real quadratic map is Collet-Eckmann and has polynomial recurrence of the critical orbit (proving a conjecture by Sinai). It follows that typical quadratic maps have excellent ergodic properties, as exponential decay of correlations (Keller and Nowicki, Young) and stochastic stability in the strong sense (Baladi and Viana). This is an important step to get the same results for more general families of unimodal maps.
We present an example of a fibred quadratic polynomial admitting an attracting invariant 2-curve. By an unfolding construction we obtain an example of a fibred quadratic polynomial admitting two attracting invariant curves. This phenomena can not occur in the non-fibred setting.
A study of real quadratic maps with real critical points, emphasizing the effective construction of critically finite maps with specified combinatorics. We discuss the behavior of the Thurston algorithm in obstructed cases, and in one exceptional badly behaved case, and provide a new description of the appropriate moduli spaces. There is also an application to topological entropy.
We describe the behaviour at infinity of the bifurcation current in the moduli space of quadratic rational maps. To this purpose, we extend it to some closed, positive (1, 1)-current on a two-dimensional complex projective space and then compute the Lelong numbers and the self-intersection of the extended current.
This is a continuation of the series of notes on the dynamics of quadratic polynomials. We show the following Rigidity Theorem: Any combinatorial class contains at most one quadratic polynomial satisfying the secondary limbs condition with a-priori bounds. As a corollary, such maps are combinatorially and topologically rigid, and as a consequence, the Mandelbrot set is locally connected at the correspoinding parameter values.
This work studies combinatorics and geometry of the Yoccoz puzzle for quadratic polynomials. It is proven that the moduli of the ``principal nest'' of annuli grow at linear rate. As a corollary we obtain complex a priori bounds and local connectivity of the Julia set for many infinitely renormalizable quadratics.
We show that if f_t is a holomorphic family of quadratic-like maps with all periodic orbits repelling so that for each real t the map f_t is a real Collet-Eckmann S-unimodal map then, writing m_t for the unique absolutely continuous invariant probability measure of f_t, the map t -> \int g dm_t is real analytic for any real analytic function g.
We prove that the entropy function on the moduli space of real quadratic rational maps is not monotonic by exhibiting a continuum of disconnected level sets. This entropy behavior is in stark contrast with the case of polynomial maps, and establishes a conjecture on the failure of monotonicity for bimodal real quadratic rational maps of shape $(+-+)$ which was posed in arXiv:1901.03458 based on experimental evidence.
We discuss computability of impressions of prime ends of compact sets. In particular, we construct quadratic Julia sets which possess explicitly described non-computable impressions.
Given any rational map $f$, there is a lamination by Riemann surfaces associated to $f$. Such laminations were constructed in general by Lyubich and Minsky. In this paper, we classify laminations associated to quadratic polynomials with periodic critical point. In particular, we prove that the topology of such laminations determines the combinatorics of the parameter. We also describe the topology of laminations associated to other types of quadratic polynomials.
We study Thurston equivalence classes of quadratic post-critically finite branched coverings. For these maps, we introduce and study invariant spanning trees. We give a computational procedure for searching for invariant spanning trees. This procedure uses bisets over the fundamental group of a punctured sphere. We also introduce a new combinatorial invariant of Thurston classes - the ivy graph.
In this note, we consider the following two families of quadratic polynomials $S_{a,c}(x) = a - cx^2$ and $T_{a,c}(x) = a - c(1 + x^2)$ and show that their respective period-3 orbits live very different lives.
In this paper we prove the existence and uniqueness of matings of the basilica with any quadratic polynomial which lies outside of the 1/2-limb of M, is non-renormalizable, and does not have any non-repelling periodic orbits.
Let f be an infinitely-renormalizable quadratic polynomial and J_\infty be the intersection of forward orbits of "small" Julia sets of simple renormalizations of f. We prove that J_\infty contains no hyperbolic sets.
We study several families of planar quadratic diffeomorphisms near a Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation. For each family, the associate bifurcation diagram can be deduced from the interpolating flow. However, a zone of chaos confined between two lines of homoclinic bifurcation that are exponentially close to one-another is observed. The goal of this paper is to test numerically an accurate asymptotic expansion for the width of this chaotic zone for different families.
The renormalization of a quadratic-like map is studied. The three-dimensional Yoccoz puzzle for an infinitely renormalizable quadratic-like map is discussed. For an unbranched quadratic-like map having the {\sl a priori} complex bounds, the local connectivity of its Julia set is proved by using the three-dimensional Yoccoz puzzle. The generalized version of Sullivan's sector theorem is discussed and is used to prove his result that the Feigenbaum quadratic polynomial has the {\sl a priori} complex bounds and is unbranched. A dense subset on the boundary of the Mandelbrot set is constructed so …
We study dynamics and bifurcations of 2-dimensional reversible maps having a symmetric saddle fixed point with an asymmetric pair of nontransversal homoclinic orbits (a symmetric nontransversal homoclinic figure-8). We consider one-parameter families of reversible maps unfolding the initial homoclinic tangency and prove the existence of infinitely many sequences (cascades) of bifurcations related to the birth of asymptotically stable, unstable and elliptic periodic orbits.
We study critical orbits and bifurcations within the moduli space of quadratic rational maps on $\mathbb{P}^1$. We focus on the family of curves, $Per_1(λ)$ for $λ$ in $\mathbb{C}$, defined by the condition that each $f\in Per_1(λ)$ has a fixed point of multiplier $λ$. We prove that the curve $Per_1(λ)$ contains infinitely many postcritically-finite maps if and only if $λ= 0$; addressing a special case of [BD2, Conjecture 1.4]. We also show that the two critical points of a map $f$ define distinct bifurcation measures along $Per_1(λ)$.
We provide a complete classification of the critical sets and their images for quadratic maps of the real plane. Critical sets are always conic sections, which provides a starting point for the classification. The generic cases, maps whose critical sets are either ellipses or hyperbolas, was published in Delgado, et al. (2013). This work completes the classification by including all the nongeneric cases: the empty set, a single point, a single line, a parabola, two parallel lines, two intersecting lines, or the whole plane. We describe all possible images for each critical set case and illustr…
We prove that non-hyperbolic non-renormalizable quadratic polynomials are expansion inducing. For renormalizable polynomials a counterpart of this statement is that in the case of unbounded combinatorics renormalized mappings become almost quadratic. Technically, this follows from the decay of the box geometry. Specific estimates of the rate of this decay are shown which are sharp in a class of S-unimodal mappings combinatorially related to rotations of bounded type. We use real methods based on cross-ratios and Schwarzian derivative complemented by complex-analytic estimates in terms of confo…
Let F be a quadratic rational map of the sphere which has two fixed Siegel disks with bounded type rotation numbers theta and nu. Using a new degree 3 Blaschke product model for the dynamics of F and an adaptation of complex a priori bounds for renormalization of critical circle maps, we prove that F can be realized as the mating of two Siegel quadratic polynomials with the corresponding rotation numbers theta and nu.
The core entropy of polynomials, recently introduced by W. Thurston, is a dynamical invariant which can be defined purely in combinatorial terms, and provides a useful tool to study parameter spaces of polynomials. The theory of core entropy extends to complex polynomials the entropy theory for real unimodal maps: the real segment is replaced by an invariant tree, known as Hubbard tree, which lives inside the filled Julia set. We prove that the core entropy of quadratic polynomials varies continuously as a function of the external angle, answering a question of Thurston.
We prove that the only possible biaccessible points in the Julia set of a Cremer quadratic polynomial are the Cremer fixed point and its preimages. This gives a partial answer to a question posed by C. McMullen on whether such a Julia set can contain any biaccessible point at all
The definition of principal nest is supplemented with a system of frames that make possible the classification of combinatorial types for every level of the nest. As a consequence, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the admissibility of a type and prove that given a sequence of non-renormalizable finite admissible types, there is a quadratic polynomial whose nest realizes the sequence.
In this paper we characterize $\w$-limit sets of dendritic Julia sets for quadratic maps. We use Baldwin's symbolic representation of these spaces as a non-Hausdorff itinerary space and prove that quadratic maps with dendritic Julia sets have shadowing, and also that for all such maps, a closed invariant set is an $\w$-limit set of a point if, and only if, it is internally chain transitive.
We apply the averaging theory of high order for computing the limit cycles of discontinuous piecewise quadratic and cubic polynomial perturbations of a linear center. These discontinuous piecewise differential systems are formed by two either quadratic, or cubic polynomial differential systems separated by a straight line. We compute the maximum number of limit cycles of these discontinuous piecewise polynomial perturbations of the linear center, which can be obtained by using the averaging theory of order $n$ for $n=1,2,3,4,5$. Of course these limit cycles bifurcate from the periodic orbits o…
We consider systems of ordinary differential equations with quadratic homogeneous right hand side. We give a new simple proof of a result already obtained in [8,10] which gives the necessary conditions for the existence of polynomial first integrals. The necessary conditions for the existence of a polynomial symmetry field are given. It is proved that an arbitrary homogeneous first integral of a given degree is a linear combination of a fixed set of polynomials.
In recent work [Nien et al. 2016], the authors enumerated a classification of quadratic maps of the plane according to their critical sets and images. It is straightforward to show that quadratic maps which are affinely map equivalent are also equivalent in the critical set classification. The question remained whether maps that are equivalent in the critical set classification are also affinely map equivalent. This paper establishes a complete enumeration of the affine map equivalence classes. As a consequence, the relationship between affine map equivalence and critical set equivalence is es…
A small perturbation of a quadratic polynomial with a non-repelling fixed point gives a polynomial with an attracting fixed point and a Jordan curve Julia set, on which the perturbed polynomial acts like angle doubling. However, there are cubic polynomials with a non-repelling fixed point, for which no perturbation results into a polynomial with Jordan curve Julia set. Motivated by the study of the closure of the Cubic Principal Hyperbolic Domain, we describe such polynomials in terms of their quadratic-like restrictions.
This is a continuation of notes on dynamics of quadratic polynomials. In this part we transfer the our prior geometric result to the parameter plane. To any parameter value c in the Mandelbrot set (which lies outside of the main cardioid and little Mandelbrot sets attached to it) we associate a ``principal nest of parapuzzle pieces'' and show that the moduli of the annuli grow at least linearly. The main motivation for this work was to prove the following: Theorem B (joint with Martens and Nowicki). Lebesgue almost every real quadratic polynomial which is non-hyperbolic and at most finitely re…
A point $z$ in the Julia set of a polynomial $p$ is called biaccessible if two dynamic rays land at $z$; a point $z$ in the Mandelbrot set is called biaccessible if two parameter rays land at $z$. In both cases, we say that the external angles of these two rays are biaccessible as well. In this paper we give upper and lower bounds for the Hausdorff dimension of biaccessible external angles of quadratic polynomials, both in the dynamical and parameter space. In particular, explicitly describe those quadratic polynomials where this dimension equals 1 (if and only if the Julia set is an interval)…
We consider perturbations of quadratic maps $f_a$ admitting an absolutely continuous invariant probability measure, where $a$ is in a certain positive measure set $\mathcal{A}$ of parameters, and show that in any neighborhood of any such an $f_a$, we find a rich fauna of dynamics. There are maps with periodic attractors as well as non-periodic maps whose critical orbit is absorbed by the continuation of any prescribed hyperbolic repeller of $f_a$. In particular, Misiurewicz maps are dense in $\mathcal{A}$. Almost all maps $f_a$ in the quadratic family is known to possess a unique natural measu…
We use the theory of self-similar groups to enumerate all combinatorial classes of non-exceptional quadratic Thurston maps with fewer than five postcritical points. The enumeration relies on our computation that the corresponding maps on moduli space can be realized by quadratic rational maps with fewer than four postcritical points.
Given a number field $K$ and a finite set $S$ of places of $K$, the first main result of this paper shows that the quadratic rational maps $ϕ:{\mathbb P}^1\to{\mathbb P}^1$ defined over $K$ which have good reduction at all places outside $S$ comprise a Zariski-dense subset of the moduli space ${\mathcal M}_2$ parametrizing all isomorphism classes of quadratic rational maps. We then consider quadratic rational maps with double unramified fixed-point structure, and our second main result establishes a geometric Shafarevich-type non-Zariski-density result for the set of such maps with good reduct…
In this article, we prove that every quadratic rational map whose multipliers all lie in the ring of integers of a given imaginary quadratic field is a power map, a Chebyshev map or a Lattès map. In particular, this provides some evidence in support of a conjecture by Milnor concerning rational maps whose multipliers are all integers.
In this paper we show how we can transform quadratic systems into new quadratic systems after some kind of birational transformations, the quadratic plane Cremona maps. We afterwards apply these transformations to the families of quadratic differential systems having an algebraic limit cycle. As a consequence, we provide a new family of quadratic systems having an algebraic limit cycle of degree 5. Moreover we show how the known families of quadratic differential systems having an algebraic limit cycle of degree greater than four are obtained using these transformations. We also provide the ph…
We compute the $K$-groups for the Cuntz-Krieger algebras $\mathcal{O}_{A_{\mathcal{K}(f_μ)}}$, where $A_{\mathcal{K}(f_μ)}$ is the Markov transition matrix arising from the \textit{kneading sequence }$\mathcal{K} (f_μ)$ of the one-parameter family of real quadratic maps $f_μ$.
Bounding the number of preperiodic points of quadratic polynomials with rational coefficients is one case of the Uniform Boundedness Conjecture in arithmetic dynamics. Here, we provide a general framework that may reduce finding periodic points of such polynomials over Galois extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ to finding periodic points over the rationals. Furthermore, we present evidence that there are no such polynomials (up to linear conjugation) with periodic points of exact period 5 in quadratic fields by searching for points on an algebraic curve that classifies quadratic periodic points of exac…
In this paper we describe the well studied process of renormalization of quadratic polynomials from the point of view of their natural extensions. In particular, we describe the topology of the inverse limit of infinitely renormalizable quadratic polynomials and prove that when they satisfy a-priori bounds, the topology is rigid modulo its combinatorics.
We describe the iterated monodromy groups associated with post-critically finite quadratic polynomials, and explicit their connection to the `kneading sequence' of the polynomial. We then give recursive presentations by generators and relations for these groups, and study some of their properties, like torsion and `branchness'.
