A sufficient geometrical condition for the existence of absolutely continuous invariant probability measures for S-unimodal maps will be discussed. The Lebesgue typical existence of such measures in the quadratic family will be a consequence.
We study quadratic, volume preserving diffeomorphisms whose inverse is also quadratic. Such maps generalize the Hénon area preserving map and the family of symplectic quadratic maps studied by Moser. In particular, we investigate a family of quadratic volume preserving maps in three space for which we find a normal form and study invariant sets. We also give an alternative proof of a theorem by Moser classifying quadratic symplectic maps.
Let ${\cal H}$ be a hyperbolic component of quadratic rational maps possessing two distinct attracting cycles. We show that ${\cal H}$ has compact closure in moduli space if and only if neither attractor is a fixed point.
We show that the topological entropy is monotonic for unimodal interval maps which are obtained from the restriction of quadratic rational maps with real coefficients. This is done by ruling out the existence of certain post-critical curves in the moduli space of aforementioned maps, and confirms a conjecture made in [Fil19] based on experimental evidence.
We consider skew-products of quadratic maps over certain Misiurewicz-Thurston maps and study their statistical properties. We prove that, when the coupling function is a polynomial of odd degree, such a system admits two positive Lyapunov exponents almost everywhere and a unique absolutely continuous invariant probability measure.
We extend Sullivan's complex a priori bounds to real quadratic polynomials with essentially bounded combinatorics. Combined with the previous results of the first author, this yields complex bounds for all real quadratics. Local connectivity of the corresponding Julia sets follows.
We study bifurcations of non-orientable area-preserving maps with quadratic homoclinic tangencies. We study the case when the maps are given on non-orientable two-dimensional surfaces. We consider one and two parameter general unfoldings and establish results related to the emergence of elliptic periodic orbits.
We study numerically the $α$- and $ω$-limits of the Newton maps of two of the most elementary families of polynomial transformations on the plane: those with a linear component and those with both components of degree two. Our results are fully consistent with some conjectures we posed in a recent work about the dynamics of Newton maps.
This will is an expository description of quadratic rational maps. Sections 2 through 6 are concerned with the geometry and topology of such maps. Sections 7--10 survey of some topics from the dynamics of quadratic rational maps. There are few proofs. Section 9 attempts to explore and picture moduli space by means of complex one-dimensional slices. Section 10 describes the theory of real quadratic rational maps. For convenience in exposition, some technical details have been relegated to appendices: Appendix A outlines some classical algebra. Appendix B describes the topology of the space of r…
We prove that almost every non-regular real quadratic map is Collet-Eckmann and has polynomial recurrence of the critical orbit (proving a conjecture by Sinai). It follows that typical quadratic maps have excellent ergodic properties, as exponential decay of correlations (Keller and Nowicki, Young) and stochastic stability in the strong sense (Baladi and Viana). This is an important step to get the same results for more general families of unimodal maps.
A study of real quadratic maps with real critical points, emphasizing the effective construction of critically finite maps with specified combinatorics. We discuss the behavior of the Thurston algorithm in obstructed cases, and in one exceptional badly behaved case, and provide a new description of the appropriate moduli spaces. There is also an application to topological entropy.
We describe the behaviour at infinity of the bifurcation current in the moduli space of quadratic rational maps. To this purpose, we extend it to some closed, positive (1, 1)-current on a two-dimensional complex projective space and then compute the Lelong numbers and the self-intersection of the extended current.
We show that if f_t is a holomorphic family of quadratic-like maps with all periodic orbits repelling so that for each real t the map f_t is a real Collet-Eckmann S-unimodal map then, writing m_t for the unique absolutely continuous invariant probability measure of f_t, the map t -> \int g dm_t is real analytic for any real analytic function g.
We prove that the entropy function on the moduli space of real quadratic rational maps is not monotonic by exhibiting a continuum of disconnected level sets. This entropy behavior is in stark contrast with the case of polynomial maps, and establishes a conjecture on the failure of monotonicity for bimodal real quadratic rational maps of shape $(+-+)$ which was posed in arXiv:1901.03458 based on experimental evidence.
We study Thurston equivalence classes of quadratic post-critically finite branched coverings. For these maps, we introduce and study invariant spanning trees. We give a computational procedure for searching for invariant spanning trees. This procedure uses bisets over the fundamental group of a punctured sphere. We also introduce a new combinatorial invariant of Thurston classes - the ivy graph.
We study several families of planar quadratic diffeomorphisms near a Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation. For each family, the associate bifurcation diagram can be deduced from the interpolating flow. However, a zone of chaos confined between two lines of homoclinic bifurcation that are exponentially close to one-another is observed. The goal of this paper is to test numerically an accurate asymptotic expansion for the width of this chaotic zone for different families.
The renormalization of a quadratic-like map is studied. The three-dimensional Yoccoz puzzle for an infinitely renormalizable quadratic-like map is discussed. For an unbranched quadratic-like map having the {\sl a priori} complex bounds, the local connectivity of its Julia set is proved by using the three-dimensional Yoccoz puzzle. The generalized version of Sullivan's sector theorem is discussed and is used to prove his result that the Feigenbaum quadratic polynomial has the {\sl a priori} complex bounds and is unbranched. A dense subset on the boundary of the Mandelbrot set is constructed so …
We study dynamics and bifurcations of 2-dimensional reversible maps having a symmetric saddle fixed point with an asymmetric pair of nontransversal homoclinic orbits (a symmetric nontransversal homoclinic figure-8). We consider one-parameter families of reversible maps unfolding the initial homoclinic tangency and prove the existence of infinitely many sequences (cascades) of bifurcations related to the birth of asymptotically stable, unstable and elliptic periodic orbits.
We study critical orbits and bifurcations within the moduli space of quadratic rational maps on $\mathbb{P}^1$. We focus on the family of curves, $Per_1(λ)$ for $λ$ in $\mathbb{C}$, defined by the condition that each $f\in Per_1(λ)$ has a fixed point of multiplier $λ$. We prove that the curve $Per_1(λ)$ contains infinitely many postcritically-finite maps if and only if $λ= 0$; addressing a special case of [BD2, Conjecture 1.4]. We also show that the two critical points of a map $f$ define distinct bifurcation measures along $Per_1(λ)$.
We provide a complete classification of the critical sets and their images for quadratic maps of the real plane. Critical sets are always conic sections, which provides a starting point for the classification. The generic cases, maps whose critical sets are either ellipses or hyperbolas, was published in Delgado, et al. (2013). This work completes the classification by including all the nongeneric cases: the empty set, a single point, a single line, a parabola, two parallel lines, two intersecting lines, or the whole plane. We describe all possible images for each critical set case and illustr…
In this paper we characterize $\w$-limit sets of dendritic Julia sets for quadratic maps. We use Baldwin's symbolic representation of these spaces as a non-Hausdorff itinerary space and prove that quadratic maps with dendritic Julia sets have shadowing, and also that for all such maps, a closed invariant set is an $\w$-limit set of a point if, and only if, it is internally chain transitive.
In recent work [Nien et al. 2016], the authors enumerated a classification of quadratic maps of the plane according to their critical sets and images. It is straightforward to show that quadratic maps which are affinely map equivalent are also equivalent in the critical set classification. The question remained whether maps that are equivalent in the critical set classification are also affinely map equivalent. This paper establishes a complete enumeration of the affine map equivalence classes. As a consequence, the relationship between affine map equivalence and critical set equivalence is es…
We consider perturbations of quadratic maps $f_a$ admitting an absolutely continuous invariant probability measure, where $a$ is in a certain positive measure set $\mathcal{A}$ of parameters, and show that in any neighborhood of any such an $f_a$, we find a rich fauna of dynamics. There are maps with periodic attractors as well as non-periodic maps whose critical orbit is absorbed by the continuation of any prescribed hyperbolic repeller of $f_a$. In particular, Misiurewicz maps are dense in $\mathcal{A}$. Almost all maps $f_a$ in the quadratic family is known to possess a unique natural measu…
Since the pioneering works of Jakobson and Benedicks & Carleson and others, it has been known that a positive measure set of quadratic maps admit invariant probability measures absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue. These measures allow one to statistically predict the asymptotic fate of Lebesgue almost every initial condition. Estimating fluctuations of empirical distributions before they settle to equilibrium requires a fairly good control over large parts of the phase space. We use the sub-exponential slow recurrence condition of Benedicks & Carleson to build induced Markov maps of…
The Milnor problem on one-dimensional attractors is solved for S-unimodal maps with a non-degenerate critical point c. It provides us with a complete understanding of the possible limit behavior for Lebesgue almost every point. This theorem follows from a geometric study of the critical set $ω(c)$ of a "non-renormalizable" map. It is proven that the scaling factors characterizing the geometry of this set go down to 0 at least exponentially. This resolves the problem of the non-linearity control in small scales. The proofs strongly involve ideas from renormalization theory and holomorphic dynam…
We use the theory of self-similar groups to enumerate all combinatorial classes of non-exceptional quadratic Thurston maps with fewer than five postcritical points. The enumeration relies on our computation that the corresponding maps on moduli space can be realized by quadratic rational maps with fewer than four postcritical points.
The behavior of orbits for iterated logistic maps has been widely studied since the dawn of discrete dynamics as a research field, in particular in the context of the complex quadratic family. However, little is is known about orbit behavior if the map changes along with the iterations. We investigate in which ways the traditional theory of Fatou-Julia may still apply in this case, illustrating how the iteration pattern (symbolic template) can affect the topology of the Julia and Mandelbrot sets. We briefly discuss the potential of this extension towards a variety of applications in genetic an…
As a particular problem within the field of non-autonomous discrete systems, we consider iterations of two quadratic maps $f_{c_0}=z^2+c_0$ and $f_{c_1}=z^2+c_1$, according to a prescribed binary sequence, which we call a \emph{template}. We study the asymptotic behavior of the critical orbits, and define the Mandelbrot set in this case as the locus for which these orbits are bounded. However, unlike in the case of single maps, this concept can be understood in several ways. For a fixed template, one may consider this locus as a subset of the parameter space in $(c_0,c_1) \in \mathbb{C}^2$; fo…
Given a critically periodic quadratic map with no secondary renormalizations, we introduce the notion of $Q$-recurrent quadratic polynomials. We show that the pieces of the principal nest of a $Q$-recurrent map $f_c$ converge in shape to the Julia set of $Q$. We use this fact to compute analytic invariants of the nest of $f_c$, to give a complete characterization of complex quadratic Fibonacci maps and to obtain a new auto-similarity result on the Mandelbrot set.
The monotonicity of entropy is investigated for real quadratic rational maps on the real circle $\mathbb{R}\cup\{\infty\}$ based on the natural partition of the corresponding moduli space $\mathcal{M}_2(\mathbb{R})$ into its monotonic, covering, unimodal and bimodal regions. Utilizing the theory of polynomial-like mappings, we prove that the level sets of the real entropy function $h_\mathbb{R}$ are connected in the $(-+-)$-bimodal region and a portion of the unimodal region in $\mathcal{M}_2(\mathbb{R})$. Based on the numerical evidence, we conjecture that the monotonicity holds throughout th…
We consider quasisymmetric reparametrizations of the parameter space of the quadratic family. We prove that the set of quadratic maps which are either regular or Collet-Eckmann with polynomial recurrence of the critical orbit has full Lebesgue measure. (The intent of this work is just to be a rigorous reference for the companion preprint Statistical properties of unimodal maps: smooth families with negative Schwarzian derivative. It is based on the LaTeX file of the paper Statistical properties of unimodal maps: the quadratic family. The proofs are very similar and in many places differ just b…
In this paper we consider maps on the plane which are similar to quadratic maps in that they are degree 2 branched covers of the plane. In fact, consider for $α$ fixed, maps $f_c$ which have the following form (in polar coordinates): $$f_c(r\,e^{iθ})\;=\;r^{2α}\,e^{2iθ}\,+\,c$$ When $α=1$, these maps are quadratic ($z \maps z^2 + c$), and their dynamics and bifurcation theory are to some degree understood. When $α$ is different from one, the dynamics is no longer conformal. In particular, the dynamics is not completely determined by the orbit of the critical point. Nevertheless, for many value…
For a positive measure set of nonuniformly expanding quadratic maps on the interval we effect a multifractal formalism, i.e., decompose the phase space into level sets of time averages of a given observable and consider the associated {\it Birkhoff spectrum} which encodes this decomposition. We derive a formula which relates the Hausdorff dimension of level sets to entropies and Lyapunov exponents of invariant probability measures, and then use this formula to show that the spectrum is continuous. In order to estimate the Hausdorff dimension from above, one has to "see" sufficiently many point…
Given a number field $K$ and a finite set $S$ of places of $K$, the first main result of this paper shows that the quadratic rational maps $ϕ:{\mathbb P}^1\to{\mathbb P}^1$ defined over $K$ which have good reduction at all places outside $S$ comprise a Zariski-dense subset of the moduli space ${\mathcal M}_2$ parametrizing all isomorphism classes of quadratic rational maps. We then consider quadratic rational maps with double unramified fixed-point structure, and our second main result establishes a geometric Shafarevich-type non-Zariski-density result for the set of such maps with good reduct…
In this article, we prove that every quadratic rational map whose multipliers all lie in the ring of integers of a given imaginary quadratic field is a power map, a Chebyshev map or a Lattès map. In particular, this provides some evidence in support of a conjecture by Milnor concerning rational maps whose multipliers are all integers.
In this paper we show how we can transform quadratic systems into new quadratic systems after some kind of birational transformations, the quadratic plane Cremona maps. We afterwards apply these transformations to the families of quadratic differential systems having an algebraic limit cycle. As a consequence, we provide a new family of quadratic systems having an algebraic limit cycle of degree 5. Moreover we show how the known families of quadratic differential systems having an algebraic limit cycle of degree greater than four are obtained using these transformations. We also provide the ph…
The thermodynamical formalism is studied for renormalisable maps of the interval and the natural potential $-t \log|Df|$. Multiple and indeed infinitely many phase transitions at positive $t$ can occur for some quadratic maps. All unimodal quadratic maps with positive topological entropy exhibit a phase transition in the negative spectrum.
We compute the $K$-groups for the Cuntz-Krieger algebras $\mathcal{O}_{A_{\mathcal{K}(f_μ)}}$, where $A_{\mathcal{K}(f_μ)}$ is the Markov transition matrix arising from the \textit{kneading sequence }$\mathcal{K} (f_μ)$ of the one-parameter family of real quadratic maps $f_μ$.
In 1994 S. Bullett and C. Penrose introduced the one complex parameter family of $(2:2)$ holomorphic correspondences $\mathcal{F}_a$: $$\left(\frac{aw-1}{w-1}\right)^2+\left(\frac{aw-1}{w-1}\right)\left(\frac{az+1}{z+1}\right) +\left(\frac{az+1}{z+1}\right)^2=3$$ and proved that for every value of $a \in [4,7] \subset \mathbb{R}$ the correspondence $\mathcal{F}_a$ is a mating between a quadratic polynomial $Q_c(z)=z^2+c,\,\,c \in \mathbb{R}$ and the modular group $Γ=PSL(2,\mathbb{Z})$. They conjectured that this is the case for every member of the family $\mathcal{F}_a$ which has $a$ in the co…
The main result of this paper is a proof using real analysis of the monotonicity of the topological entropy for the family of quadratic maps, sometimes called Milnor's Monotonicity Conjecture. In contrast, the existing proofs rely in one way or another on complex analysis. Our proof is based on tools and algorithms previously developed by the authors and collaborators to compute the topological entropy of multimodal maps. Specifically, we use the number of transverse intersections of the map iterates with the so-called critical line. The approach is technically simple and geometrical. The same…
In 2004 Vasiga and Shallit studied the number of periodic points of two particular discrete quadratic maps modulo prime numbers. They found the asymptotic behaviour of the sum of the number of periodic points for all primes less than some bound, assuming the Extended Riemann Hypothesis. Later that same year Chou and Shparlinski proved this asymptotic result without assuming any unproven hypotheses. Inspired by this we perform experiments and find a striking pattern in the behaviour of the sum of the number of periodic points for quadratic maps other than the two particular ones studied previou…
Given a finite set T of maps on a finite ring R, we look at the finite simple graph G=(V,E) with vertex set V=R and edge set E={(a,b) | exists t in T, b=t(a), b not equal to a}. An example is when R=Z_n and T consists of a finite set of quadratic maps T_i(x)=x^2+a_i. Graphs defined like that have a surprisingly rich structure. This holds especially in an algebraic set-up when T is generated by polynomials on Z_n. The characteristic path length L and the mean clustering coefficient C are interlinked by global-local quantity LC=-L/log(C) which often appears to have a limit for n to infinity like…
We describe an algorithm for distinguishing hyperbolic components in the parameter space of quadratic rational maps with a periodic critical point. We then illustrate computer images of the hyperbolic components of the parameter spaces V1 - V4, which were produced using our algorithm. We also resolve the singularities of the projective closure of V5 by blowups, giving an alternative proof that as an algebraic curve, the geometric genus of V5 is 1. This explains why we are unable to produce an image for V5.
Topological mating is an combination that takes two same-degree polynomials and produces a new map with dynamics inherited from this initial pair. This process frequently yields a map that is Thurston-equivalent to a rational map $F$ on the Riemann sphere. Given a pair of polynomials of the form $z^2+c$ that are postcritically finite, there is a fast test on the constant parameters to determine whether this map $F$ exists---but this test is not constructive. We present an iterative method that utilizes finite subdivision rules and Thurston's algorithm to approximate this rational map, $F$. Thi…
We show that there exist real quadratic maps of the interval whose attractors are computationally intractable. This is the first known class of such natural examples.
For the family of quadratic rational functions having a $2$-cycle of bounded type Siegel disks, we prove that each of the boundaries of these Siegel disks contains at most one critical point. In the parameter plane, we prove that the locus for which the boundaries of the $2$-cycle of Siegel disks contain two critical points is a Jordan curve.
We find the exact radius of linearization disks at indifferent fixed points of quadratic maps in $\mathbb{C}_p$. We also show that the radius is invariant under power series perturbations. Localizing all periodic orbits of these quadratic-like maps we then show that periodic points are not the only obstruction for linearization. In so doing, we provide the first known examples in the dynamics of polynomials over $\mathbb{C}_p$ where the boundary of the linearization disk does not contain any periodic point.
Quadratic automorphisms of $\mathbb C^3$ are classified up to affine conjugacy into seven classes by Forn$æ$ss and Wu. Five of them contain irregular maps with interesting dynamics. In this paper, we focus on the maps in the fifth class and make some dynamical estimates for these maps.
