We study quadratic, volume preserving diffeomorphisms whose inverse is also quadratic. Such maps generalize the Hénon area preserving map and the family of symplectic quadratic maps studied by Moser. In particular, we investigate a family of quadratic volume preserving maps in three space for which we find a normal form and study invariant sets. We also give an alternative proof of a theorem by Moser classifying quadratic symplectic maps.
We study bifurcations of non-orientable area-preserving maps with quadratic homoclinic tangencies. We study the case when the maps are given on non-orientable two-dimensional surfaces. We consider one and two parameter general unfoldings and establish results related to the emergence of elliptic periodic orbits.
A sufficient geometrical condition for the existence of absolutely continuous invariant probability measures for S-unimodal maps will be discussed. The Lebesgue typical existence of such measures in the quadratic family will be a consequence.
Let ${\cal H}$ be a hyperbolic component of quadratic rational maps possessing two distinct attracting cycles. We show that ${\cal H}$ has compact closure in moduli space if and only if neither attractor is a fixed point.
A quadratic stochastic operator (in short QSO) is usually used to present the time evolution of differing species in biology. Some quadratic stochastic operators have been studied by Lotka and Volterra. In the present paper, we first give a simple characterization of Volterra QSO in terms of absolutely continuity of discrete measures. Moreover, we provide its generalization in continuous setting. Further, we introduce a notion of orthogonal preserving QSO, and describe such kind of operators defined on two dimensional simplex. It turns out that orthogonal preserving QSOs are permutations of Vo…
We show that the topological entropy is monotonic for unimodal interval maps which are obtained from the restriction of quadratic rational maps with real coefficients. This is done by ruling out the existence of certain post-critical curves in the moduli space of aforementioned maps, and confirms a conjecture made in [Fil19] based on experimental evidence.
We consider skew-products of quadratic maps over certain Misiurewicz-Thurston maps and study their statistical properties. We prove that, when the coupling function is a polynomial of odd degree, such a system admits two positive Lyapunov exponents almost everywhere and a unique absolutely continuous invariant probability measure.
We extend Sullivan's complex a priori bounds to real quadratic polynomials with essentially bounded combinatorics. Combined with the previous results of the first author, this yields complex bounds for all real quadratics. Local connectivity of the corresponding Julia sets follows.
We study numerically the $α$- and $ω$-limits of the Newton maps of two of the most elementary families of polynomial transformations on the plane: those with a linear component and those with both components of degree two. Our results are fully consistent with some conjectures we posed in a recent work about the dynamics of Newton maps.
Let $q:M\to M$ be a volume-preserving diffeomorphism of a smooth manifold $M$. We study the possibility to present $q$ as the Poincaré map, corresponding to a volume-preserving vector field on $\mathbb{T}\times M$, $\mathbb{T} = \mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}$.
This will is an expository description of quadratic rational maps. Sections 2 through 6 are concerned with the geometry and topology of such maps. Sections 7--10 survey of some topics from the dynamics of quadratic rational maps. There are few proofs. Section 9 attempts to explore and picture moduli space by means of complex one-dimensional slices. Section 10 describes the theory of real quadratic rational maps. For convenience in exposition, some technical details have been relegated to appendices: Appendix A outlines some classical algebra. Appendix B describes the topology of the space of r…
We prove that almost every non-regular real quadratic map is Collet-Eckmann and has polynomial recurrence of the critical orbit (proving a conjecture by Sinai). It follows that typical quadratic maps have excellent ergodic properties, as exponential decay of correlations (Keller and Nowicki, Young) and stochastic stability in the strong sense (Baladi and Viana). This is an important step to get the same results for more general families of unimodal maps.
A study of real quadratic maps with real critical points, emphasizing the effective construction of critically finite maps with specified combinatorics. We discuss the behavior of the Thurston algorithm in obstructed cases, and in one exceptional badly behaved case, and provide a new description of the appropriate moduli spaces. There is also an application to topological entropy.
We describe the behaviour at infinity of the bifurcation current in the moduli space of quadratic rational maps. To this purpose, we extend it to some closed, positive (1, 1)-current on a two-dimensional complex projective space and then compute the Lelong numbers and the self-intersection of the extended current.
We show that if f_t is a holomorphic family of quadratic-like maps with all periodic orbits repelling so that for each real t the map f_t is a real Collet-Eckmann S-unimodal map then, writing m_t for the unique absolutely continuous invariant probability measure of f_t, the map t -> \int g dm_t is real analytic for any real analytic function g.
In this paper we show that generic continuous Lebesgue measure preserving circle maps have the s-limit shadowing property. In addition we obtain that s-limit shadowing is a generic property also for continuous circle maps. In particular, this implies that classical shadowing, periodic shadowing and limit shadowing are generic in these two settings as well.
We prove that the entropy function on the moduli space of real quadratic rational maps is not monotonic by exhibiting a continuum of disconnected level sets. This entropy behavior is in stark contrast with the case of polynomial maps, and establishes a conjecture on the failure of monotonicity for bimodal real quadratic rational maps of shape $(+-+)$ which was posed in arXiv:1901.03458 based on experimental evidence.
We study Thurston equivalence classes of quadratic post-critically finite branched coverings. For these maps, we introduce and study invariant spanning trees. We give a computational procedure for searching for invariant spanning trees. This procedure uses bisets over the fundamental group of a punctured sphere. We also introduce a new combinatorial invariant of Thurston classes - the ivy graph.
We study bifurcations of area-preserving maps, both orientable (symplectic) and non-orientable, with quadratic homoclinic tangencies. We consider one and two parameter general unfoldings and establish results related to the appearance of elliptic periodic orbits. In particular, we find conditions for such maps to have infinitely many generic (KAM-stable) elliptic periodic orbits of all successive periods starting at some number.
We study several families of planar quadratic diffeomorphisms near a Bogdanov-Takens bifurcation. For each family, the associate bifurcation diagram can be deduced from the interpolating flow. However, a zone of chaos confined between two lines of homoclinic bifurcation that are exponentially close to one-another is observed. The goal of this paper is to test numerically an accurate asymptotic expansion for the width of this chaotic zone for different families.
We study dynamics of area-preserving maps in a neighbourhood of an elliptic fixed point. We describe simplified normal forms for a fixed point of co-dimension 3. We also construct normal forms for a generic three-parameter family which contains such degeneracy and use the normal form theory to describe generic bifurcations of periodic orbits in these families.
The renormalization of a quadratic-like map is studied. The three-dimensional Yoccoz puzzle for an infinitely renormalizable quadratic-like map is discussed. For an unbranched quadratic-like map having the {\sl a priori} complex bounds, the local connectivity of its Julia set is proved by using the three-dimensional Yoccoz puzzle. The generalized version of Sullivan's sector theorem is discussed and is used to prove his result that the Feigenbaum quadratic polynomial has the {\sl a priori} complex bounds and is unbranched. A dense subset on the boundary of the Mandelbrot set is constructed so …
We study dynamics and bifurcations of 2-dimensional reversible maps having a symmetric saddle fixed point with an asymmetric pair of nontransversal homoclinic orbits (a symmetric nontransversal homoclinic figure-8). We consider one-parameter families of reversible maps unfolding the initial homoclinic tangency and prove the existence of infinitely many sequences (cascades) of bifurcations related to the birth of asymptotically stable, unstable and elliptic periodic orbits.
We construct a resonant normal form for an area-preserving map near a generic resonant elliptic fixed point. The normal form is obtained by a simplification of a formal interpolating Hamiltonian. The resonant normal form is unique and therefore provides the formal local classification for area-preserving maps with the elliptic fixed point. The total number of formal invariants is infinite. We consider the cases of weak (of order $n\ge5$) and strong (of order $n=3,4$) resonances. We also construct unique normal forms for analytic families of area-preserving maps. We note that our constructions …
We study critical orbits and bifurcations within the moduli space of quadratic rational maps on $\mathbb{P}^1$. We focus on the family of curves, $Per_1(λ)$ for $λ$ in $\mathbb{C}$, defined by the condition that each $f\in Per_1(λ)$ has a fixed point of multiplier $λ$. We prove that the curve $Per_1(λ)$ contains infinitely many postcritically-finite maps if and only if $λ= 0$; addressing a special case of [BD2, Conjecture 1.4]. We also show that the two critical points of a map $f$ define distinct bifurcation measures along $Per_1(λ)$.
We provide a complete classification of the critical sets and their images for quadratic maps of the real plane. Critical sets are always conic sections, which provides a starting point for the classification. The generic cases, maps whose critical sets are either ellipses or hyperbolas, was published in Delgado, et al. (2013). This work completes the classification by including all the nongeneric cases: the empty set, a single point, a single line, a parabola, two parallel lines, two intersecting lines, or the whole plane. We describe all possible images for each critical set case and illustr…
We derive simplified normal forms for an area-preserving map in a neighbourhood of a degenerate resonant elliptic fixed point. Such fixed points appear in generic two-parameter families of area-preserving maps. We also derive a simplified normal form for a generic two-parametric unfolding. The normal forms are used to analyse bifurcations of $n$-periodic orbits. In particular, for $n\ge6$ we find regions of parameters where the normal form has "meandering'' invariant curves.
In this paper we study R-reversible area-preserving maps f on a two-dimensional Riemannian closed manifold M, i.e. diffeomorphisms f such that Ro f=f^{-1}o R where R is an isometric involution on M. We obtain a C1-residual subset where any map inside it is Anosov or else has a dense set of elliptic periodic orbits. As a consequence we obtain the proof of the stability conjecture for this class of maps. Along the paper we also derive the C1-closing lemma for reversible maps and other perturbation toolboxes.
In this paper we show that the invariant Cantor set of period doubling type of any infinitely renormalizable area-preserving map in the universality class of the Eckmann-Koch-Wittwer renormalization fixed point is always contained in a Lipschitz curve but never contained in a smooth curve. This extends previous results by de Carvalho, Lyubich and Martens about strongly dissipative maps of the plane close to unimodal maps to the area-preserving setting. The method used for constructing the Lipschitz curve is very similar to the method used in the dissipative case but proving the nonexistence of…
Let us denote $λ$ the Lebesgue measure on $[0,1]$, put$$ C(λ)=\{f\in C([0,1]);\ \forall~A\subset [0,1], A~\text{Borel}:\ λ(A)=λ(f^{-1}(A))\}.$$ We endow the set $C(λ)$ by the uniform metric $ρ$ and investigate dynamical properties of typical maps in the complete metric space $(C(λ),ρ)$.
In this paper we characterize $\w$-limit sets of dendritic Julia sets for quadratic maps. We use Baldwin's symbolic representation of these spaces as a non-Hausdorff itinerary space and prove that quadratic maps with dendritic Julia sets have shadowing, and also that for all such maps, a closed invariant set is an $\w$-limit set of a point if, and only if, it is internally chain transitive.
The period doubling Cantor sets of strongly dissipative Henon-like maps with different average Jacobian are not smoothly conjugated. The Jacobian Rigidity Conjecture says that the period doubling Cantor sets of two-dimensional Henon-like maps with the same average Jacobian are smoothly conjugated. This conjecture is true for average Jacobian zero, e.g. the one-dimensional case. The other extreme case is when the maps preserve area, e.g. the average Jacobian is one. Indeed, the period doubling Cantor set of area-preserving maps in the universality class of the Eckmann-Koch-Wittwer renormalizati…
It is well known for experts that resonances in nonlinear systems lead to new invariant objects that lead to new behaviors. The goal of this paper is to study the invariant sets generated by resonances under foliation preserving torus maps. That is torus which preserve a foliation of irrational lines $L_{θ_{0}}=\{θ_{0}+Ωt | t\in\mathbb{R}\}\subset\mathbb{T}^{d}$. Foliation preserving maps appear naturally as reparametrization of linear flows in the torus and also play an important role in several applications involving coupled oscillators, delay equations, resonators with moving walls, etc. Th…
This note will study a family of cubic rational maps which carry antipodal points of the Riemann sphere to antipodal points. We focus particularly on the fjords, which are part of the central hyperbolic component but stretch out to infinity. These serve to decompose the parameter plane into subsets, each of which is characterized by a corresponding rotation number.
In recent work [Nien et al. 2016], the authors enumerated a classification of quadratic maps of the plane according to their critical sets and images. It is straightforward to show that quadratic maps which are affinely map equivalent are also equivalent in the critical set classification. The question remained whether maps that are equivalent in the critical set classification are also affinely map equivalent. This paper establishes a complete enumeration of the affine map equivalence classes. As a consequence, the relationship between affine map equivalence and critical set equivalence is es…
We consider the set of partially hyperbolic symplectic diffeomorphisms which are accessible, have 2-dimensional center bundle and satisfy some pinching and bunching conditions. In this set, we prove that the non-uniformly hyperbolic maps are $C^r$ open and there exists a $C^r$ open and dense subset of continuity points for the center Lyapunov exponents. We also generalize these results to volume-preserving systems.
We prove that any planar birational integrable map, which preserves a fibration given by genus $0$ curves has a Lie symmetry and some associated invariant measures. The obtained results allow to study in a systematic way the global dynamics of these maps. Using this approach, the dynamics of several maps is described. In particular we are able to give, for particular examples, the explicit expression of the rotation number function, and the set of periods of the considered maps.
We consider perturbations of quadratic maps $f_a$ admitting an absolutely continuous invariant probability measure, where $a$ is in a certain positive measure set $\mathcal{A}$ of parameters, and show that in any neighborhood of any such an $f_a$, we find a rich fauna of dynamics. There are maps with periodic attractors as well as non-periodic maps whose critical orbit is absorbed by the continuation of any prescribed hyperbolic repeller of $f_a$. In particular, Misiurewicz maps are dense in $\mathcal{A}$. Almost all maps $f_a$ in the quadratic family is known to possess a unique natural measu…
Since the pioneering works of Jakobson and Benedicks & Carleson and others, it has been known that a positive measure set of quadratic maps admit invariant probability measures absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue. These measures allow one to statistically predict the asymptotic fate of Lebesgue almost every initial condition. Estimating fluctuations of empirical distributions before they settle to equilibrium requires a fairly good control over large parts of the phase space. We use the sub-exponential slow recurrence condition of Benedicks & Carleson to build induced Markov maps of…
The Milnor problem on one-dimensional attractors is solved for S-unimodal maps with a non-degenerate critical point c. It provides us with a complete understanding of the possible limit behavior for Lebesgue almost every point. This theorem follows from a geometric study of the critical set $ω(c)$ of a "non-renormalizable" map. It is proven that the scaling factors characterizing the geometry of this set go down to 0 at least exponentially. This resolves the problem of the non-linearity control in small scales. The proofs strongly involve ideas from renormalization theory and holomorphic dynam…
In this paper, we consider chaotic dynamics and variational structures of area-preserving maps. There is a lot of study on dynamics of their maps and the works of Poincare and Birkhoff are well-known. To consider variational structures of area-preserving maps, we define a special class of area-preserving maps called monotone twist maps. Variational structures determined from twist maps can be used for constructing characteristic trajectories of twist maps. Our goal is to define the variational structure such as giving infinite transition orbits through minimizing methods.
We use the theory of self-similar groups to enumerate all combinatorial classes of non-exceptional quadratic Thurston maps with fewer than five postcritical points. The enumeration relies on our computation that the corresponding maps on moduli space can be realized by quadratic rational maps with fewer than four postcritical points.
We study normal forms for families of area-preserving maps which have a fixed point with neutral multipliers -1 or +1 at epsilon=0. Our study covers both the orientation-preserving and orientation-reversing cases. In these cases Birkhoff normal forms do not provide a substantial simplification of the system. In the paper we prove that the Takens normal form vector field can be substantially simplified. We also show that if certain non-degeneracy conditions are satisfied no further simplification is generically possible since the constructed normal forms are unique. In particular, we provide a …
Given a number field $K$ and a finite set $S$ of places of $K$, the first main result of this paper shows that the quadratic rational maps $ϕ:{\mathbb P}^1\to{\mathbb P}^1$ defined over $K$ which have good reduction at all places outside $S$ comprise a Zariski-dense subset of the moduli space ${\mathcal M}_2$ parametrizing all isomorphism classes of quadratic rational maps. We then consider quadratic rational maps with double unramified fixed-point structure, and our second main result establishes a geometric Shafarevich-type non-Zariski-density result for the set of such maps with good reduct…
In this article, we prove that every quadratic rational map whose multipliers all lie in the ring of integers of a given imaginary quadratic field is a power map, a Chebyshev map or a Lattès map. In particular, this provides some evidence in support of a conjecture by Milnor concerning rational maps whose multipliers are all integers.
In this paper we show how we can transform quadratic systems into new quadratic systems after some kind of birational transformations, the quadratic plane Cremona maps. We afterwards apply these transformations to the families of quadratic differential systems having an algebraic limit cycle. As a consequence, we provide a new family of quadratic systems having an algebraic limit cycle of degree 5. Moreover we show how the known families of quadratic differential systems having an algebraic limit cycle of degree greater than four are obtained using these transformations. We also provide the ph…
We consider a class of area-preserving, piecewise affine maps on the 2-sphere. These maps encode degenerating families of K3 surface automorphisms and are profitably studied using techniques from tropical and Berkovich geometries.
