We consider the topological behaviors of continuous maps with one topological attractor on compact metric space $X$. This kind of map is a generalization of maps such as topologically expansive Lorenz map, unimodal map without homtervals and so on. We provide a leveled $A$-$R$ pair decomposition for such maps, and characterize $α$-limit set of each point. Based on weak Morse decomposition of $X$, we construct a bounded Lyapunov function $V(x)$, which give a clear description of orbit behavior of each point in $X$ except a meager set.
This paper is concerned with the Morse theory of attractors for semiflows on complete metric spaces. First, we construct global Morse-Lyapunov functions for Morse decompositions of attractors. Then we extend some well known deformation results in the critical-point theory to Morse-Lyapunov functions which are only continuous. Based on these works, we finally introduce the concept of critical groups for Morse sets and establish Morse inequalities and Morse equations for attractors.
In the stability theory of dynamical systems, Lyapunov functions play a fundamental role. In this paper, we study the attractor-repeller pair decomposition and Morse decomposition for compact metric space in the random setting. In contrast to [8], by introducing slightly stronger definitions of random attractor and repeller, we characterize attractor-repeller pair decompositions and Morse decompositions for random dynamical systems through the existence of Lyapunov functions. These characterizations, we think, deserve to be known widely.
We study strange non-chaotic attractors in a class of quasiperiodically forced monotone interval maps known as pinched skew products. We prove that the probability of positive time-N Lyapunov exponents, with respect to the unique physical measure on the attractor, decays exponentially as N goes to infinity. The motivation for this work comes from the study of finite-time Lyapunov exponents as possible early-warning signals of critical transitions in the context of forced dynamics.
We prove that for every smooth compact manifold $M$ and any $r \ge 1$, whenever there is an open domain in $\mathrm{Diff}^r(M)$ exhibiting a persistent homoclinic tangency related to a basic set with a sectionally dissipative periodic saddle, topologically generic diffeomorphisms in this domain have Lyapunov unstable Milnor attractors. This implies, in particular, that the instability of Milnor attractors is locally topologically generic in $C^1$ if $\mathrm{dim}\,M \ge 3$ and in $C^2$ if $\mathrm{dim}\,M = 2$. Moreover, it follows from the results of C. Bonatti, L. J. Díaz and E. R. Pujals th…
The collision of a fixed point with a switching manifold (or border) in a piecewise-smooth map can create many different types of invariant sets. This paper explores two techniques that, combined, establish a chaotic attractor is created in a border-collision bifurcation in $\mathbb{R}^d$ $(d \ge 1)$. First, asymptotic stability of the fixed point at the bifurcation is characterised and shown to imply a local attractor is created. Second, a lower bound on the maximal Lyapunov exponent is obtained from the determinants of the one-sided Jacobian matrices associated with the fixed point. Special …
In this paper we first construct smooth Morse-Lyapunov functions of attractors for nonsmooth dynamical systems. Then we prove that all open attractor neighborhoods of an attractor have the same homotopy type. Based on this basic fact we finally introduce the concept of critical group for Morse sets of an attractor and establish Morse inequalities and equations.
In this paper we obtain a detailed description of the global and cocycle attractors for the skew-product semiflows induced by the mild solutions of a family of scalar linear-dissipative parabolic problems over a minimal and uniquely ergodic flow. We consider the case of null upper Lyapunov exponent for the linear part of the problem. Then, two different types of attractors can appear, depending on whether the linear equations have a bounded or an unbounded associated real cocycle. In the first case (e.g.~in periodic equations), the structure of the attractor is simple, whereas in the second ca…
It is a paper about models for isolated sets and the construction of special hyperbolic Lyapunov functions. We prove that after a suitable surgery every isolated set is the intersection of an attractor and a repeller. We give linear models for attractors and repellers. With these tools we construct hyperbolic Lyapunov functions and metrics around an isolated set whose values along the orbits are catenary curves. Applications are given to expansive flows and homeomorphisms, obtaining, among other things, a hyperbolic metric on local cross sections for an arbitrary expansive flow on a compact me…
As it is well-known, the forwards and pullback dynamics are in general unrelated. In this paper we present an in-depth study of whether the pullback attractor is also a forwards attractor for the processes involved with the skew-product semiflow induced by a family of scalar non-autonomous reaction-diffusion equations which are linear in a neighbourhood of zero and have null upper Lyapunov exponent. Besides, the notion of Li-Yorke chaotic pullback attractor for a process is introduced, and we prove that this chaotic behaviour might occur for almost all the processes. When the problems are addi…
The exact Lyapunov dimension formula for the Lorenz system has been analytically obtained first due to G.A.Leonov in 2002 under certain restrictions on parameters, permitting classical values. He used the construction technique of special Lyapunov-type functions developed by him in 1991 year. Later it was shown that the consideration of larger class of Lyapunov-type functions permits proving the validity of this formula for all parameters of the system such that all the equilibria of the system are hyperbolically unstable. In the present work it is proved the validity of the formula for Lyapun…
We study chaotic dynamics in a system of four differential equations describing the dynamics of five identical globally coupled phase oscillators with biharmonic coupling. We show that this system exhibits strange spiral attractors (Shilnikov attractors) with two zero (indistinguishable from zero in numerics) Lyapunov exponents in a wide region of the parameter space. We explain this phenomenon by means of bifurcation analysis of the three-dimensional Poincaré map for the system under consideration. We show that the chaotic dynamics develop here near a codimension three bifurcation, when a per…
We study non-invertible piecewise hyperbolic maps in the plane. The Hausdorff dimension of the attractor is calculated in terms of the Lyapunov exponents, provided that the map satisfies a transversality condition. Explicit examples of maps for which this condition holds are given.
It is shown that the famous Lyapunov exponents cannot be used as the numerical characteristic for distinguishing different kinds of attractors, such as the equilibrium point, the limit closed curve, the stable torus and the strange attractor.
Koopman spectral theory has grown in the past decade as a powerful tool for dynamical systems analysis and control. In this paper, we show how recent data-driven techniques for estimating Koopman-Invariant subspaces with neural networks can be leveraged to extract Lyapunov certificates for the underlying system. In our work, we specifically focus on systems with a limit-cycle, beyond just an isolated equilibrium point, and use Koopman eigenfunctions to efficiently parameterize candidate Lyapunov functions to construct forward-invariant sets under some (unknown) attractor dynamics. Additionally…
We use the concept of Baire Ergodicity and Ergodic Formalism introduced to study topological and statistical attractors for interval maps, even with discontinuities. For that we also analyze the {\em wandering intervals attractors}. As a result, we establish the finiteness of the non-periodic topological attractors for piecewise $C^2$ maps with discontinuities. For $C^2$ interval maps without discontinuities, we show the coincidence of the statistical attractors with the topological ones and we calculate the upper Birkhoff averages of continuous functions for generic points, even when the map …
We classify the measure theoretic attractors of general C^3 unimodal maps with quadratic critical points. The main ingredient is the decay of geometry.
In this paper we investigate how many periodic attractors maps in a small neighbourhood of a given map can have. For this purpose we develop new tools which help to make uniform cross-ratio distortion estimates in a neighbourhood of a map with degenerate critical points.
In this paper we introduce a notion of an attractor for local semiflows on topological spaces, which in some cases seems to be more suitable than the existing ones in the literature. Based on this notion we develop a basic attractor theory on topological spaces under appropriate separation axioms. First, we discuss fundamental properties of attractors such as maximality and stability and establish some existence results. Then, we give a converse Lyapunov theorem. Finally, the Morse decomposition of attractors is also addressed.
Since the proof, at the end of the 80's, of the finiteness of the number of attractors for $C^3$ maps of the interval having negative Schwarzian derivative, it has been generally considered that the same result could be true for maps with discontinuities. In the present paper we show that this is indeed the case.
We study the non-wandering set of contracting Lorenz maps. We show that if such a map $f$ doesn't have any attracting periodic orbit, then there is a unique topological attractor. Precisely, there is a compact set $Λ$ such that $ω_f(x)=Λ$ for a residual set of points $x \in [0,1]$. Furthermore, we classify the possible kinds of attractors that may occur.
For a non-flat $C^3$ unimodal map with a Cantor attractor, we show that for any open cover $\mathcal U$ of this attractor, the complexity function $p(\mathcal U, n)$ is of order $n\log n$. In the appendix, we construct a non-renormalizable map with a Cantor attractor for which $p(\mathcal{U}, n)$ is bounded from above for any open cover $\mathcal{U}$.
In the present paper we focus on the problem of the existence of strange pseudohyperbolic attractors for three-dimensional diffeomorphisms. Such attractors are genuine strange attractors in that sense that each orbit in the attractor has a positive maximal Lyapunov exponents and this property is robust, i.e. it holds for all close systems. We restrict attention to the study of pseudohyperbolic attractors that contain only one fixed point. Then we show that three-dimensional maps may have only 5 different types of such attractors, which we call the discrete Lorenz, figure-8, double-figure-8, su…
For a two parameter family of two-dimensional piecewise linear maps and for every natural number $ n $ we prove not only the existence of intervals of parameters for which the respective maps are $ n $ times renormalizable but also we show the existence of intervals of parameters where the coexistence of at least $ 2^n $ strange attractors takes place. This family of maps contains the two-dimensional extension of the classical one-dimensional family of tent maps.
We demonstrate the existence of a global attractor A with a Cantor set structure for the renormalization of critical circle mappings. The set A is invariant under a generalized renormalization transformation, whose action on A is conjugate to the two-sided shift.
We consider piecewise expanding maps of the interval with finitely many branches of monotonicity and show that they are generically combinatorially stable, i.e., the number of ergodic attractors and their corresponding mixing periods do not change under small perturbations of the map. Our methods provide a topological description of the attractor and, in particular, give an elementary proof of the density of periodic orbits.
We show that resonance zones near an elliptic periodic point of a reversible map must, generically, contain asymptotically stable and asymptotically unstable periodic orbits, along with wild hyperbolic sets.
We shall address the alternative definition of chain recurrent set for the action of a semigroup of continuous self maps, given by M. Hurley \cite {mh} in noncompact space. Following this, we shall address the characterization of chain recurrence in terms of attractors given by C. Conley in \cite {conley}.
The paper deals with topical issues of modern mathematical theory of dynamical chaos and its applications. At present, it is customary to assume that dynamical chaos in finitedimensional smooth systems can exist in three different forms. This is dissipative chaos, the mathematical image of which is a strange attractor; conservative chaos, for which the entire phase space is a large "chaotic sea" with randomly spaced elliptical islands inside it; and mixed dynamics, characterized by the principal inseparability in the phase space of attractors, repellers and conservative elements of dynamics. I…
We study the dimension spectrum of Lyapunov exponents for multimodal maps of the interval and their generalizations. We also present related results for rational maps on the Riemann sphere.
We prove that in an open and dense set, Symplectic linear cocycles over time one maps of Anosov flows, have positive Lyapunov exponents for SRB measures.
We consider piecewise $C^2$ non-flat maps of the interval and show that, for Lebesgue almost every point, its omega-limit set is either a periodic orbit, a cycle of intervals or the closure of the orbits of a subset of the critical points. In particular, every piecewise $C^2$ non-flat map of the interval displays only a finite number of non-periodic attractors.
We show how a parameterized family of maps of the spine of a manifold can be used to construct a family of homeomorphisms of the ambient manifold which have the inverse limits of the spine maps as global attractors. We describe applications to unimodal families of interval maps, to rotation sets, and to the standard family of circle maps.
For a smooth manifold of any dimension greater than one, we present an open set of smooth endomorphisms such that any of them has a transitive attractor with a non-empty interior. These maps are $m$-fold non-branched coverings, $m \ge 3$. The construction applies to any manifold of the form $S^1 \times M$, where $S^1$ is the standard circle and $M$ is an arbitrary manifold.
In this short note we describe a simple but remarkably effective method for rigorously estimating Lyapunov exponents for expanding maps of the interval. We illustrate the applicability of this method with some standard examples.
We study certain multiple ergodic averages of an iterated functions system generated by two contractions on the unit interval. By using the dynamical coding ${0,1}^{\mathbb{N}}$ of the attractor, we compute the Hausdorff dimension of the set of points with a given frequency of the pattern 11 in positions $k, 2k$.
We study the omega-limit sets $ω_X(x)$ in an isolating block $U$ of a singular-hyperbolic attractor for three-dimensional vector fields $X$. We prove that for every vector field $Y$ close to $X$ the set $ \{x\in U:ω_Y(x)$ contains a singularity$\}$ is {\em residual} in $U$. This is used to prove the persistence of singular-hyperbolic attractors with only one singularity as chain-transitive Lyapunov stable sets. These results generalize well known properties of the geometric Lorenz attractor \cite{gw} and the example in \cite{mpu}.
We consider an orientation preserving homeomorphism $h$ of $S^2$ which admits a repellor denoted $\infty$ and an attractor $-\infty$, which is not a North-South map, such that the basins of $\infty$ and $-\infty$ intersect. We study various aspects of the rotation number of $h:S^2\setminus\{\pm\infty\}\to S^2\setminus\{\pm\infty\}$, especially its relationship with the existence of periodic orbits.
We propose an approach to the attractors of skew products that tries to avoid unnecessary structures on the base space and rejects the assumption on the invariance of an attractor. When nonivertible maps in the base are allowed, one can encounter the mystery of the vanishing attractor. In the second part of the paper, we show that if the fiber maps are concave interval maps then contraction in the fibers does not depend on the map in the base.
We show that special perturbations of a particular holomorphic map on $\mathbf{P}^k$ give us examples of maps that possess chaotic nonalgebraic attractors. Furthermore, we study the dynamics of the maps on the attractors. In particular, we construct invariant hyperbolic measures supported on the attractors with nice dynamical properties.
We prove that for a generic skew product with circle fiber over an Anosov diffeomorphism the Milnor attractor (also called the likely limit set) coincides with the statistical attractor, is Lyapunov stable, and either has zero Lebesgue measure or coincides with the whole phase space. As a consequence we conclude that such skew product is either transitive or has non-wandering set of zero measure. The result is proved under the assumption that the fiber maps preserve the orientation of the circle, and the skew product is partially hyperbolic.
We construct an invariant measure for a piecewise analytic interval map whose Lyapunov exponent is not defined. Moreover, for a set of full measure, the pointwise Lyapunov exponent is not defined. This map has a Lorenz-like singularity and non-flat critical points.
In hyperbolic dynamics, a well-known result is: every hyperbolic Lyapunov stable set, is attracting; it's natural to wonder if this result is maintained in the sectional-hyperbolic dynamics. This question is still open, although some partial results have been presented. We will prove that all sectional-hyperbolic transitive Lyapunov stable set of codimension one of a vector field X over a compact manifold, with unique singularity Lorenz-like, which is of boundary-type, is an attractor of X.
The Milnor problem on one-dimensional attractors is solved for S-unimodal maps with a non-degenerate critical point c. It provides us with a complete understanding of the possible limit behavior for Lebesgue almost every point. This theorem follows from a geometric study of the critical set $ω(c)$ of a "non-renormalizable" map. It is proven that the scaling factors characterizing the geometry of this set go down to 0 at least exponentially. This resolves the problem of the non-linearity control in small scales. The proofs strongly involve ideas from renormalization theory and holomorphic dynam…
We study bifurcation mechanisms for the appearance of hyperchaotic attractors in three-dimensional diffeomorphisms, i.e., such attractors whose orbits have two positive Lyapunov exponents in numerical experiments. In order to possess this property periodic orbits belonging to the attractor should have two-dimensional unstable invariant manifolds. For realization of this possibility, we propose several bifurcation scenarios that include cascades of both supercritical period-doubling bifurcations with saddle periodic orbits and supercritical Neimark-Sacker bifurcations with stable periodic orbit…
Piecewise Translations is a class of dynamical systems which arises from some applications in computer science, machine learning, and electrical engineering. In dimension 1 it can also be viewed as a non-invertible generalization of Interval Exchange Transformations. These dynamical systems still possess some features of Interval Exchanges but the total volume is no longer preserved and allowed to decay. Every Piecewise Translation has a well-defined attracting subset which is the locus of our interest. We prove some results about how fast the dynamics lock onto the attractor, geometry of the …
We study dynamical properties of generalized Bowen-Series boundary maps associated to cocompact torsion-free Fuchsian groups. These maps are defined on the unit circle (the boundary of the Poincaré disk) by the generators of the group and have a finite set of discontinuities. We study the two forward orbits of each discontinuity point and show that for a family of such maps the cycle property holds: the orbits coincide after finitely many steps. We also show that for an open set of discontinuity points the associated two-dimensional natural extension maps possess global attractors with finite …
We study the dimension spectrum for Lyapunov exponents for rational maps acting on the Riemann sphere and characterize it by means of the Legendre-Fenchel transform of the hidden variational pressure. This pressure is defined by means of the variational principle with respect to non-atomic invariant probability measures and is associated to certain $σ$-finite conformal measures. This allows to extend previous results to exceptional rational maps.
We prove that there exists an open and dense subset $\mathcal{U}$ in the space of $C^{2}$ expanding self-maps of the circle $\mathbb{T}$ such that the Lyapunov minimizing measures of any $T\in{\mathcal U}$ are uniquely supported on a periodic orbit. This answers a conjecture of Jenkinson-Morris in the $C^2$ topology.
