In the stability theory of dynamical systems, Lyapunov functions play a fundamental role. In this paper, we study the attractor-repeller pair decomposition and Morse decomposition for compact metric space in the random setting. In contrast to [8], by introducing slightly stronger definitions of random attractor and repeller, we characterize attractor-repeller pair decompositions and Morse decompositions for random dynamical systems through the existence of Lyapunov functions. These characterizations, we think, deserve to be known widely.
We obtain an upper bound for the number of attractors and repellers that can appear from small perturbations of a sectional hyperbolic set. This extends results from [Sectional-Anosov flows in higher dimensions] and [The explosion of singular-hyperbolic attractors].
In this paper, we study the structural stability of three-dimensional diffeomorphisms with source-sink dynamics. Here the role of source and sink is played by one-dimensional hyperbolic repeller and attractor. It is well known that in the case when the repeller and the attractor are solenoids (not embedded in the surface), the diffeomorphism is not structurally stable. The author proves that in the case when the attractor and the repeller are canonically embedded in a surface, the diffeomorphism is also not structurally stable.
We show that resonance zones near an elliptic periodic point of a reversible map must, generically, contain asymptotically stable and asymptotically unstable periodic orbits, along with wild hyperbolic sets.
In a previous work, the author established a nonautonomous Conley index based on the interplay between a nonautonomous evolution operator and its skew-product formulation. This index is refined to obtain a Conley index for families of nonautonomous evolution operators. Different variants such as a categorial index, a homotopy index and a homology index are obtained. Furthermore, attractor-repeller decompositions and conecting homomorphisms are introduced for the nonautonomous setting.
The Conley index theory is a powerful topological tool for describing the basic structure of dynamical systems. One important feature of this theory is the attractor-repeller decomposition of isolated invariant sets. In this decomposition, all points in the invariant set belong to the attractor, its associated dual repeller, or a connecting region. In this connecting region, points tend towards the attractor in forwards time and the repeller in backwards time. This decomposition is also, in a certain topological sense, stable under perturbation. Conley theory is well-developed for flows and ho…
We show that if $f: M^3\to M^3$ is an $A$-diffeomorphism with a surface two-dimensional attractor or repeller $\mathcal B$ and $ M^2_ \mathcal B$ is a supporting surface for $ \mathcal B$, then $\mathcal B = M^2_{\mathcal B}$ and there is $k\geq 1$ such that: 1) $M^2_{\mathcal B}$ is a union $M^2_1\cup...\cup M^2_k$ of disjoint tame surfaces such that every $M^2_i$ is homeomorphic to the 2-torus $T^2$. 2) the restriction of $f^k$ to $M^2_i$ $(i\in\{1,...,k\})$ is conjugate to Anosov automorphism of $T^2$.
It is well known that topological classification of dynamical systems with hyperbolic dynamics is significantly defined by dynamics on nonwandering set. F. Przytycki generalized axiom $A$ for smooth endomorphisms that was previously introduced by S. Smale for diffeomorphisms and proved spectral decomposition theorem which claims that nonwandering set of an $A$-endomorphism is a union of a finite number basic sets. In present paper the criterion for a basic sets of an $A$-endomorphism to be an attractor is given. Moreover, dynamics on basic sets of codimension one is studied. It is shown, that …
It is well-known that there is a close relationship between the dynamics of diffeomorphisms satisfying the axiom $A$ and the topology of the ambient manifold. In the given article, this statement is considered for the class $\mathbb G(M^2)$ of $A$-diffeomorphisms of closed orientable surfaces such that their non-wandering set consists of $k_f\geq 2$ connected components of one-dimensional basic sets (attractors and repellers). We prove that the ambient surface of every diffeomorphism $f\in \mathbb G(M^2)$ is homeomorphic to the connected sum of $k_f$ closed orientable surfaces and $l_f$ two-di…
A homoclinic class of a vector field is the closure of the transverse homoclinic orbits associated to a hyperbolic periodic orbit. An attractor (a repeller) is a transitive set to which converges every positive (negative) nearby orbit. We show that a generic C1 vector field on a closed n-manifold has either infinitely many homoclinic classes or a finite collection of attractors (repellers) whose basins form an open-dense set. This result gives an approach to a conjecture by Palis. We also prove the existence of a locally residual subset of C1 vector fields on a 5-manifold having finitely many …

In the present paper the exhaustive topological classification of nonsingular Morse-Smale flows of $n$-manifolds with two limit cycles is presented. Hyperbolicity of periodic orbits implies that among them one is attracting and another is repelling. Due to Poincare-Hopf theorem Euler characteristic of closed manifold $M^n$ which admits the considered flows is equal to zero. Only torus and Klein bottle can be ambient manifolds for such flows in case of $n=2$. Authors established that there exist exactly two classes of topological equivalence of such flows of torus and three of the Klein bottle.…
This paper contains four main results associated with an attractor of a projective iterated function system (IFS). The first theorem characterizes when a projective IFS has an attractor which avoids a hyperplane. The second theorem establishes that a projective IFS has at most one attractor. In the third theorem the classical duality between points and hyperplanes in projective space leads to connections between attractors that avoid hyperplanes and repellers that avoid points as well as hyperplane attractors that avoid points and repellers that avoid hyperplanes. Finally, an index is defined …
We propose a method to identify and to locate "repellers'' in quasi-periodically forced logistic map (QPLM), using a kind of Morse decomposition of nested attracting invariant sets. In order to obtain the invariant sets, we use an auxiliary 1+2-dimensional skew-product map system describing the evolution of a line segment in the phase space of QPLM. With this method, detailed structure of repellers can be visualized, and the emergence of a repeller in QPLM can be detected as an easily observable bifurcation in the auxiliary system. In addition to the method to detect the repellers, we propose …
This paper is concerned with the Morse theory of attractors for semiflows on complete metric spaces. First, we construct global Morse-Lyapunov functions for Morse decompositions of attractors. Then we extend some well known deformation results in the critical-point theory to Morse-Lyapunov functions which are only continuous. Based on these works, we finally introduce the concept of critical groups for Morse sets and establish Morse inequalities and Morse equations for attractors.
We study small perturbations of a sectional hyperbolic set of a vector field on a compact manifold. Indeed, we obtain robustly finiteness of homoclinic classes on this scenary. Moreover, since attractor and repeller sets are particular cases of homoclinic classes, this result improve (A. M. López B, Finiteness and existence of attractors and repellers on sectional hyperbolic sets, Discrete and Continuous Dynamical Systems-A 37).
Attractor-repeller decompositions of isolated invariant sets give rise to so-called connecting homomorphisms. These homomorphisms reveal information on the existence and structure of connecting trajectories of the underlying dynamical system. To give a meaningful generalization of this general principle to nonautonomous problems, the nonautonomous homology Conley index is expressed as a direct limit. Moreover, it is shown that a nontrivial connecting homomorphism implies, on the dynamical systems level, a sort of uniform connectedness of the attractor-repeller decomposition.
A one-dimensional confined Nonlinear Random Walk is a tuple of $N$ diffeomorphisms of the unit interval driven by a probabilistic Markov chain. For generic such walks, we obtain a geometric characterization of their ergodic stationary measures and prove that all of them have negative Lyapunov exponents. These measures appear to be probabilistic manifestations of physical measures for certain deterministic dynamical systems. These systems are step skew products over transitive subshifts of finite type (topological Markov chains) with the unit interval fiber. For such skew products, we show ther…
It is a paper about models for isolated sets and the construction of special hyperbolic Lyapunov functions. We prove that after a suitable surgery every isolated set is the intersection of an attractor and a repeller. We give linear models for attractors and repellers. With these tools we construct hyperbolic Lyapunov functions and metrics around an isolated set whose values along the orbits are catenary curves. Applications are given to expansive flows and homeomorphisms, obtaining, among other things, a hyperbolic metric on local cross sections for an arbitrary expansive flow on a compact me…
In this paper we present the scenario of the occurrence of strongly dissipative mixed dynamics in two-dimensional reversible diffeomorphisms, using as an example the system describing a motion of two point vortices under the influence of wave perturbation and shear flow. For mixed dynamics of this type the chaotic attractor intersects with the chaotic repeller, but their intersection forms a "thin" set. The main stage of this scenario is the appearance of homoclinic structures for a symmetric saddle orbit which arise after crisis of a homoclinic attractor and repeller.
In this paper we provide a dynamical characterization of isolated invariant continua which are global attractors for planar dissipative flows. As a consequence, a sufficient condition for an isolated invariant continuum to be either an attractor or a repeller is derived for general planar flows.
We describe the basic lattice structures of attractors and repellers in dynamical systems. The structure of distributive lattices allows for an algebraic treatment of gradient-like dynamics in general dynamical systems, both invertible and noninvertible. We separate those properties which rely solely on algebraic structures from those that require some topological arguments, in order to lay a foundation for the development of algorithms to manipulate these structures computationally.
This is the first article in a two-part series containing some results on dimension estimates for $C^1$ iterated function systems and repellers. In this part, we prove that the upper box-counting dimension of the attractor of any $C^1$ iterated function system (IFS) on ${\Bbb R}^d$ is bounded above by its singularity dimension, and the upper packing dimension of any ergodic invariant measure associated with this IFS is bounded above by its Lyapunov dimension. Similar results are obtained for the repellers for $C^1$ expanding maps on Riemannian manifolds.
A recent generalization of the Conley index to discrete multivalued dynamical systems without a continuous selector is motivated by applications to data-driven dynamics. In the present paper we continue the program by studying attractor-repeller pairs and Morse decompositions in this setting. In particular, we prove Morse equation and Morse inequalities.
In this paper we first construct smooth Morse-Lyapunov functions of attractors for nonsmooth dynamical systems. Then we prove that all open attractor neighborhoods of an attractor have the same homotopy type. Based on this basic fact we finally introduce the concept of critical group for Morse sets of an attractor and establish Morse inequalities and equations.
We extend Selgrade's Theorem, Morse spectrum, and related concepts to the setting of linear skew product semiflows on a separable Banach bundle. We recover a characterization, well-known in the finite-dimensional setting, of exponentially separated subbundles as attractor-repeller pairs for the associated semiflow on the projective bundle.
We consider semigroup actions on the unit interval generated by strictly increasing $C^r$-maps. We assume that one of the generators has a pair of fixed points, one attracting and one repelling, and a heteroclinic orbit that connects the repeller and attractor, and the other generators form a robust blender, which can bring the points from a small neighborhood of the attractor to an arbitrarily small neighborhood of the repeller. This is a model setting for partially hyperbolic systems with one central direction. We show that, under additional conditions on the non-linearity and the Schwarzian…
This is the second part of our study of the dimension theory of $C^1$ iterated function systems (IFSs) and repellers on ${\Bbb R}^d$. In the first part we proved that the upper box-counting dimension of the attractor of any $C^1$ IFS on ${\Bbb R}^d$ is bounded above by its singularity dimension, and the upper packing dimension of any ergodic invariant measure associated with this IFS is bounded above by its Lyapunov dimension. Here we introduce a generalized transversality condition (GTC) for parametrized families of $C^1$ IFSs, and show that these upper bounds give actually the dimensions for…
The classical approach to the study of dynamical systems consists in representing the dynamics of the system in the form of a "source-sink", that means identifying an attractor-repeller pair, which are attractor-repellent sets for all other trajectories of the system. If there is a way to choose this pair so that the space orbits in its complement (the characteristic space of orbits) is connected, this creates prerequisites for finding complete topological invariants of the dynamical system. It is known that such a pair always exists for arbitrary Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms given on any manif…
The paper deals with topical issues of modern mathematical theory of dynamical chaos and its applications. At present, it is customary to assume that dynamical chaos in finitedimensional smooth systems can exist in three different forms. This is dissipative chaos, the mathematical image of which is a strange attractor; conservative chaos, for which the entire phase space is a large "chaotic sea" with randomly spaced elliptical islands inside it; and mixed dynamics, characterized by the principal inseparability in the phase space of attractors, repellers and conservative elements of dynamics. I…
We consider a family of $(2,2)$-rational functions given on the set of complex $p$-adic field $\mathcal{C}_p$. Each such function $f$ has the two distinct fixed points $x_1=x_1(f)$, $x_2=x_2(f)$. We study $p$-adic dynamical systems generated by the $(2,2)$-rational functions. We prove that $x_1$ is always indifferent fixed point for $f$, i.e., $x_1$ is a center of some Siegel disk $SI(x_1)$. Depending on the parameters of the function $f$, the type of the fixed point $x_2$ may be any possibility: indifferent, attractor, repeller. We find Siegel disk or basin of attraction of the fixed point $x…
In the first part of this paper, we generalize the results of the author \cite{Liu,Liu2} from the random flow case to the random semiflow case, i.e. we obtain Conley decomposition theorem for infinite dimensional random dynamical systems. In the second part, by introducing the backward orbit for random semiflow, we are able to decompose invariant random compact set (e.g. global random attractor) into random Morse sets and connecting orbits between them, which generalizes the Morse decomposition of invariant sets originated from Conley \cite{Con} to the random semiflow setting and gives the pos…
Let $\g$ be a semisimple Lie algebra and $G = \Int(\g)$. In this article, we relate the Jordan decomposition of $X \in \g$ (or $g \in G$) with the dynamics induced on generalized flag manifolds by the right invariant continuous-time flow generated by $X$ (or the discrete-time flow generated by $g$). We characterize the recurrent set and the finest Morse decomposition (including its stable sets) of these flows and show that its entropy always vanishes. We characterize the structurally stable ones and compute the Conley index of the attractor Morse component. When the nilpotent part of $X$ is tr…
