We prove that for every smooth compact manifold $M$ and any $r \ge 1$, whenever there is an open domain in $\mathrm{Diff}^r(M)$ exhibiting a persistent homoclinic tangency related to a basic set with a sectionally dissipative periodic saddle, topologically generic diffeomorphisms in this domain have Lyapunov unstable Milnor attractors. This implies, in particular, that the instability of Milnor attractors is locally topologically generic in $C^1$ if $\mathrm{dim}\,M \ge 3$ and in $C^2$ if $\mathrm{dim}\,M = 2$. Moreover, it follows from the results of C. Bonatti, L. J. Díaz and E. R. Pujals that, for a $C^1$ topologically generic diffeomorphism of a closed manifold, either any homoclinic class admits some dominated splitting, or this diffeomorphism has an unstable Milnor attractor, or the inverse diffeomorphism has an unstable Milnor attractor. The same results hold for statistical and minimal attractors.
We prove that for a generic skew product with circle fiber over an Anosov diffeomorphism the Milnor attractor (also called the likely limit set) coincides with the statistical attractor, is Lyapunov stable, and either has zero Lebesgue measure or coincides with the whole phase space. As a consequence we conclude that such skew product is either transitive or has non-wandering set of zero measure. The result is proved under the assumption that the fiber maps preserve the orientation of the circle, and the skew product is partially hyperbolic.

We present new examples of open sets of diffeomorphisms such that a generic diffeomorphisms in those sets have no dynamically indecomposable attractors in the topological sense and have infinitely many chain-recurrence classes. We show that except from one particular class, the other classes are contained in periodic surfaces. This study allows us to obtain existence of Milnor attractors as well as studying ergodic properties of the diffeomorphisms in those open sets by using the ideas and results from [BV] and [BF].
The statistical and Milnor attractors of step skew products over the Bernoulli shift are studied. For the case of the fiber a circle we prove that for a topologically generic step skew product the statistical and the Milnor attractor coincide and are Lyapunov stable. For this end we study some properties of the projection of the attractor onto the fiber, which might be of independent interest. For the case of the fiber being a segment we give a description of the Milnor attractor as the closure of the union of graphs of finitely many almost everywhere defined functions from the base of the ske…
In this paper, we study the structural stability of three-dimensional diffeomorphisms with source-sink dynamics. Here the role of source and sink is played by one-dimensional hyperbolic repeller and attractor. It is well known that in the case when the repeller and the attractor are solenoids (not embedded in the surface), the diffeomorphism is not structurally stable. The author proves that in the case when the attractor and the repeller are canonically embedded in a surface, the diffeomorphism is also not structurally stable.
We announce the discovery of a diffeomorphism of a three-dimensional manifold with boundary which has two disjoint attractors. Each attractor attracts a set of positive $3$-dimensional Lebesgue measure whose points of Lebesgue density are dense in the whole manifold. This situation is stable under small perturbations.
In the present paper we contribute to the thermodynamic formalism of partially hyperbolic attractors for local diffeomorphisms admitting an invariant stable bundle and a positively invariant cone field with non-uniform cone expansion at a positive Lebesgue measure set of points. These include the case of attractors for Axiom A endomorphisms and partially hyperbolic endomorphisms derived from Anosov. We prove these attractors have finitely many SRB measures, that these are hyperbolic, and that the SRB measure is unique provided the dynamics is transitive. Moreover, we show that the SRB measures…
We show that a strong partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism of $\mathbb{T}^3$ isotopic to Anosov has a unique quasi-attractor. Moreover, we study the entropy of the diffeomorphism restricted to this quasi-attractor.
It is well-known that there is a close relationship between the dynamics of diffeomorphisms satisfying the axiom $A$ and the topology of the ambient manifold. In the given article, this statement is considered for the class $\mathbb G(M^2)$ of $A$-diffeomorphisms of closed orientable surfaces such that their non-wandering set consists of $k_f\geq 2$ connected components of one-dimensional basic sets (attractors and repellers). We prove that the ambient surface of every diffeomorphism $f\in \mathbb G(M^2)$ is homeomorphic to the connected sum of $k_f$ closed orientable surfaces and $l_f$ two-di…
We prove the saturation of a generalized partially hyperbolic attractor of a $C^2$ map. As a consequence, we show that any generalized partially hyperbolic horseshoe-like attractor of a $C^1$-generic diffeomorphism has zero volume. In contrast, by modification of Poincaré cross section of the geometric model, we build a $C^1$-diffeomorphism with a partially hyperbolic horseshoe-like attractor of positive volume.
We prove that the set of diffeomorphisms having at most finitely many attractors contains a dense and open subset of the space of $C^1$ partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with one-dimensional center. This is obtained thanks to a robust geometric property of partially hyperbolic laminations that we show to hold after perturbations of the dynamics. This technique also allows to prove that $C^1$-generic diffeomorphisms far from homoclinic tangencies in dimension $3$ either have at most finitely many attractors, or satisfy Newhouse phenomenon.
In this paper, we study the limit measures of the empirical measures of Lebesgue almost every point in the basin of a partially hyperbolic attractor. They are strongly related to a notion named Gibbs u-state, which can be defined in a large class of diffeomorphisms with less regularity and which is the same as Pesin-Sinai's notion for partially hyperbolic attractors of $C^{1+α}$ diffeomorphisms. In particular, we prove that for partially hyperbolic $C^{1+α}$ diffeomorphisms with one-dimensional center, and for Lebesgue almost every point: (1) the center Lyapunov exponent is well defined, but (…
The article states that for every compact manifold M of dimension 4 or higher there is an area U in a set of smooth diffeomorphisms over M such that every map f from U has local maximal partially hyperbolic attractor and nonatomic ergodic invariant measure on it where one of Lyapunov exponents vanish. The result is first proved for skew products over horseshoe and then transferred onto smooth diffeomorphisms.
We present new examples of generic diffeomorphisms without attractors. Also, we study how these wild classes are accumulated by infinitely many other classes (obtaining that the chain recurrence classes different from the only quasi-attractor are contained in center stable manifolds). The construction relies on some derived from Anosov (DA) constructions and uses strongly the semiconjugacy obtained by these diffeomorphisms. An interesting feature of this examples is that we can show that robustly, they present a unique attractor in the sense of Milnor.
We consider a real analytic diffeomorphism $ψ_0$ on a n-dimensional disk D, n >= 2, exhibiting a Feigenbaum-Coullet-Tresser (F.C.T.) attractor, being far, in the standard topology of the real analytic diffeomorphism space C(D), from the standard F.C.T. map $ϕ_0$ fixed by the double renormalization. We prove that $ψ_0$ persists along a codimension-one manifold M \subset C(D), and that it is the bifurcating map along any one-parameter family in $C(D)$ transversal to M, from diffeomorphisms attracted to sinks, to those which exhibit chaos. The main tool in the proofs is a theorem of Functional An…
We establish two results under which the topology of a hyperbolic set constrains ambient dynamics. First if a set is a compact, transitive, expanding hyperbolic attractor of codimension 1 for some diffeomorphism, then it is a union of transitive, expanding attractors (or contracting repellers) of codimension 1 for any diffeomorphism such that it is hyperbolic. Secondly, if a set is a nonwandering, locally maximal, compact hyperbolic set for a surface diffeomorphism, then it is locally maximal for any diffeomorphism for which it is hyperbolic.
It was established in 2006 that bifurcations of three-dimensional diffeomorphisms with a homoclinic tangency to a saddle-focus fixed point with the Jacobian equal to 1 can lead to Lorenz-like strange attractors. In the present paper we prove an analogous result for three-dimensional diffeomorphisms with a homoclinic tangency to a saddle fixed point with the Jacobian equal to 1, provided the quadratic homoclinic tangency under consideration is non-simple.
The Milnor problem on one-dimensional attractors is solved for S-unimodal maps with a non-degenerate critical point c. It provides us with a complete understanding of the possible limit behavior for Lebesgue almost every point. This theorem follows from a geometric study of the critical set $ω(c)$ of a "non-renormalizable" map. It is proven that the scaling factors characterizing the geometry of this set go down to 0 at least exponentially. This resolves the problem of the non-linearity control in small scales. The proofs strongly involve ideas from renormalization theory and holomorphic dynam…
Lorenz attractors play an important role in the modern theory of dynamical systems. The reason is that they are robust, i.e. preserve their chaotic properties under various kinds of perturbations. This means that such attractors can exist in applied models and be observed in experiments. It is known that discrete Lorenz attractors can appear in local and global bifurcations of multidimensional diffeomorphisms. However, to date, only partial cases were investigated. In this paper bifurcations of homoclinic and heteroclinic cycles with quadratic tangencies of invariant manifolds are studied. A f…
In this paper, we study heterodimensional cycles of two-parameter families of 3-dimensional diffeomorphisms some element of which contains nondegenerate heterodimensional tangencies of the stable and unstable manifolds of two saddle points with different indexes, and prove that such diffeomorphisms can be well approximated by another element which has a quadratic homoclinic tangency associated to one of these saddle points. Moreover, it is shown that the tangency unfolds generically with respect to the family. This result together with some theorem in Viana, we detect strange attractors appear…
We prove that any diffeomorphism of a compact manifold can be approximated in topology C1 by another diffeomorphism exhibiting a homoclinic bifurcation (a homoclinic tangency or a heterodimensional cycle) or by one which is essentially hyperbolic (it has a finite number of transitive hyperbolic attractors with open and dense basin of attraction).
A topological classification of many classes of dynamical systems with regular dynamics in low dimensions is often reduced to combinatorial invariants. In dimension 3 combinatorial invariants are proved to be insufficient even for simplest Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms. The complete topological invariant for the systems with a single saddle point on the 3-sphere is the embedding of the homotopy non-trivial knot into the manifold $\mathbb S^2\times\mathbb S^1$. If a diffeomorphism has several saddle points their unstable separatrices form arcs frames in the basin of the sink and circles frame in …
On every compact 3-manifold, we build a non-empty open set $\cU$ of $\Diff^1(M)$ such that, for every $r\geq 1$, every $C^r$-generic diffeomorphism $f\in\cU\cap \Diff^r(M)$ has no topological attractors. On higher dimensional manifolds, one may require that $f$ has neither topological attractors nor topological repellers. Our examples have finitely many quasi attractors. For flows, we may require that these quasi attractors contain singular points. Finally we discuss alternative definitions of attractors which may be better adapted to generic dynamics.
We show that if $Λ$ is a codimension-one hyperbolic attractor for a $C^r$ diffeomorphism $f$, where $2\leq r\leq \infty$, and $f$ is not Anosov, then there is a neighborhood $\mathcal{U}$ of $f$ in $\mathrm{Diff}^r(M)$ and an open and dense set $\mathcal{V}$ of $\mathcal{U}$ such that any $g\in\mathcal{V}$ has a trivial centralizer on the basin of attraction for $Λ$.
We prove a result motivated by Williams's classification of expanding attractors and the Franks-Newhouse Theorem on codimension-1 Anosov diffeomorphisms: If a mixing hyperbolic attractor has 1-dimensional unstable manifolds then it is either is expanding or is homeomorphic to a compact abelian group (a toral solenoid); in the latter case the dynamics is conjugate to a group automorphism. As a corollary we obtain a classification of all 2-dimensional basic sets in 3-manifolds. Furthermore we classify all hyperbolic attractors in 3-manifolds in terms of the classically studied examples, answerin…
In this paper we consider the realization of DE attractors by self-diffeomorphisms of manifolds. For any expanding self-map $ϕ:M\to M$ of a connected, closed $p$-dimensional manifold $M$, one can always realize a $(p,q)$-type attractor derived from $ϕ$ by a compactly-supported self-diffeomorphsm of $\RR^{p+q}$, as long as $q\geq p+1$. Thus lower codimensional realizations are more interesting, related to the knotting problem below the stable range. We show that for any expanding self-map $ϕ$ of a standard smooth $p$-dimensional torus $T^p$, there is compactly-supported self-diffeomorphism of $…
We consider unstable attractors; Milnor attractors $A$ such that, for some neighbourhood $U$ of $A$, almost all initial conditions leave $U$. Previous research strongly suggests that unstable attractors exist and even occur robustly (i.e. for open sets of parameter values) in a system modelling biological phenomena, namely in globally coupled oscillators with delayed pulse interactions. In the first part of this paper we give a rigorous definition of unstable attractors for general dynamical systems. We classify unstable attractors into two types, depending on whether or not there is a neighbo…
Considering random noise in finite dimensional parameterized families of diffeomorphisms of a compact finite dimensional boundaryless manifold M, we show the existence of time averages for almost every orbit of each point of M, imposing mild conditions on the families. Moreover these averages are given by a finite number of physical absolutely continuous stationary probability measures. We use this result to deduce that situations with infinitely many sinks and Henon-like attractors are not stable under random perturbations, e.g., Newhouse's and Colli's phenomena in the generic unfolding of a …
We show that if $f: M^3\to M^3$ is an $A$-diffeomorphism with a surface two-dimensional attractor or repeller $\mathcal B$ and $ M^2_ \mathcal B$ is a supporting surface for $ \mathcal B$, then $\mathcal B = M^2_{\mathcal B}$ and there is $k\geq 1$ such that: 1) $M^2_{\mathcal B}$ is a union $M^2_1\cup...\cup M^2_k$ of disjoint tame surfaces such that every $M^2_i$ is homeomorphic to the 2-torus $T^2$. 2) the restriction of $f^k$ to $M^2_i$ $(i\in\{1,...,k\})$ is conjugate to Anosov automorphism of $T^2$.
We consider an abundant class of non-uniformly hyperbolic $C^2$-Hénon like diffeomorphisms called strongly regular and which corresponds to Benedicks-Carleson parameters. We prove the existence of $m>0$ such that for any such diffeomorphism $f$, every invariant probability measure of $f$ has a Lyapunov exponent greater than $m$, answering a question of L. Carleson. Moreover, we show the existence and uniqueness of a measure of maximal entropy, this answers a question of M. Lyubich and Y. Pesin. We also prove that the maximal entropy measure is equi-distributed on the periodic points and is fin…
In this paper, we study a two-parameter family of two-dimensional diffeomorphisms such that it has a cubic homoclinic tangency unfolding generically which is associated with a dissipative saddle point. Our first theorem presents an open set in the parameter-plane such that, for any parameter value in the open set, there exists a one-parameter subfamily through this value exhibiting cubically related persistent contact-making and contact-breaking quadratic tangencies. Moreover, the second theorem shows that any such two-parameter family satisfies Wang-Young's conditions which guarantee that it …
If there exists a diffeomorphism $f$ on a closed, orientable $n$-manifold $M$ such that the non-wandering set $Ω(f)$ consists of finitely many orientable $(\pm)$ attractors derived from expanding maps, then $M$ must be a rational homology sphere; moreover all those attractors are of topological dimension $n-2$. Expanding maps are expanding on (co)homologies.
Let $M$ be a closed manifold, and let $f:M \rightarrow M$ be a $C^{2+α}$ Axiom A diffeomorphism. Suppose that $f$ has an attractor $Ω$ with codimension 1 stable lamination. Under a generic nonlinearity condition and a suitable bunching condition, we prove polynomial Fourier decay in the unstable direction for a large class of invariant measures on $Ω$. Our result applies in particular for the measure of maximal entropy. We construct in the appendix an explicit solenoid that satisfies the nonlinearity and bunching assumption.
We study partially hyperbolic sets $K$ on a Riemannian manifold $M$ whose tangent space splits as $T_K M=E^{cu}\oplus E^{s}$, for which the center-unstable direction $E^{cu}$ is non-uniformly expanding on some local unstable disk. We prove that the (stretched) exponential decay of recurrence times for an induced scheme can be deduced under the assumption of (stretched) exponential decay of the time that typical points need to achieve some uniform expanding in the center-unstable direction. This extends a result by Alves and Pinheiro to the (stretched) exponential case. As an application of our…
It is known that volume hyperbolicity (partial hyperbolicity and uniform expansion or contraction of the volume in the extremal bundles) is a necessary condition for robust transitivity or robust chain recurrence hence for tameness. In this paper, on any 3-manifold we build examples of quasi-attractors which are volume hyperbolic and wild at the same time. As a main corollary, we see that, for any closed 3-manifold $M$, the space $\mathrm{Diff}^1(M)$ admits a non-empty open set where every $C^1$-generic diffeomorphism has no attractors or repellers. The main tool of our construction is the not…
Using alternating Heegaard diagrams, we construct some 3-manifolds which admit diffeomorphisms such that the non-wandering sets of the diffeomorphisms are composed of Smale-Williams solenoid attractors and repellers, an interesting example is the truncated-cube space. In addition, we prove that if the nonwandering set of the diffeomorphism consists of genus two Smale-Williams solenoids, then the Heegaard genus of the closed manifold is at most two.
In this paper we're considering the question of whether or not a partial order on a finite set is realisable as a Smale order of a structurally stable diffeomorphism or flow acting on a closed manifold. We classify the orders that are realisable by 1) an $Ω$-stable diffeomorphism acting on a closed surface 2) an Anosov flow on a closed 3-manifold 3) a stable diffeomorphism with trivial attractors and repellers acting on a closed surface.
Given an n-dimensional C^r-diffeomorphism g, its renormalized iteration is an iteration of g, restricted to a certain n-dimensional ball and taken in some C^r-coordinates in which the ball acquires radius 1. We show that for any r >/- 1 the renormalized iterations of C^r -close to identity maps of an n-dimensional unit ball B^n (n >/- 2) form a residual set among all orientation-preserving C^r -diffeomorphisms B^n \to R^n. In other words, any generic n-dimensional dynamical phenomenon can be obtained by iterations of C^r -close to identity maps, with the same dimension of the phase space. As a…
This thesis attempts to contribute to the study of differentiable dynamics both from a semi-local and global point of view. The center of study is differentiable dynamics in manifolds of dimension 3 where we are interested in the understanding of the existence and structure of attractors as well as dynamical and topological implications of the existence of a global partially hyperbolic splitting. The main contributions are new examples of dynamics without attractors where we get a quite complete description of the dynamics around some wild homoclinic classes and two results on dynamical cohere…
