A lattice is called well-rounded if its minimal vectors span the corresponding Euclidean space. In this paper we completely describe well-rounded full-rank sublattices of ${\mathbb Z}^2$, as well as their determinant and minima sets. We show that the determinant set has positive density, deriving an explicit lower bound for it, while the minima set has density 0. We also produce formulas for the number of such lattices with a fixed determinant and with a fixed minimum. These formulas are related to the number of divisors of an integer in short intervals and to the number of its representations as a sum of two squares. We investigate the growth of the number of such lattices with a fixed determinant as the determinant grows, exhibiting some determinant sequences on which it is particularly large. To this end, we also study the behavior of the associated zeta function, comparing it to the Dedekind zeta function of Gaussian integers and to the Solomon zeta function of ${\mathbb Z}^2$. Our results extend automatically to well-rounded sublattices of any lattice $A {\mathbb Z}^2$, where A is an element of the real orthogonal group $O_2({\mathbb R})$.
A lattice is called well-rounded if its minimal vectors span the corresponding Euclidean space. In this paper we study the similarity classes of well-rounded sublattices of ${\mathbb Z}^2$. We relate the set of all such similarity classes to a subset of primitive Pythagorean triples, and prove that it has structure of a noncommutative infinitely generated monoid. We discuss the structure of a given similarity class, and define a zeta function corresponding to each similarity class. We relate it to Dedekind zeta of ${\mathbb Z}[i]$, and investigate the growth of some related Dirichlet series, w…
We investigate the properties of the zeta-function of well-rounded sublattices of a fixed arithmetic lattice in the plane. In particular, we show that this function has abscissa of convergence at $s=1$ with a real pole of order 2, improving upon a recent result of S. Kuehnlein. We use this result to show that the number of well-rounded sublattices of a planar arithmetic lattice of index less or equal $N$ is $O(N \log N)$ as $N \to \infty$. To obtain these results, we produce a description of integral well-rounded sublattices of a fixed planar integral well-rounded lattice and investigate conve…
We produce an explicit parameterization of well-rounded sublattices of the hexagonal lattice in the plane, splitting them into similarity classes. We use this parameterization to study the number, the greatest minimal norm, and the highest signal-to-noise ratio of well-rounded sublattices of the hexagonal lattice of a fixed index. This investigation parallels earlier work by Bernstein, Sloane, and Wright where similar questions were addressed on the space of all sublattices of the hexagonal lattice. Our restriction is motivated by the importance of well-rounded lattices for discrete optimizati…
A lattice in Euclidean $d$-space is called well-rounded if it contains $d$ linearly independent vectors of minimal length. This class of lattices is important for various questions, including sphere packing or homology computations. The task of enumerating well-rounded sublattices of a given lattice is of interest already in dimension 2, and has recently been treated by several authors. In this paper, we analyse the question more closely in the spirit of earlier work on similar sublattices and coincidence site sublattices. Combining explicit geometric considerations with known techniques from …
Let $\Lb$ be a lattice in an $n$-dimensional Euclidean space $E$ and let $\Lb'$ be a Minkowskian sublattice of $\Lb$, that is, a sublattice having a basis made of representatives for the Minkowski successive minima of $\Lb$. We consider the set of possible quotients $\Lb/\Lb'$ which may exists in a given dimension or among not too large values of the index $[\Lb:\Lb']$, indeed $[\Lb:\Lb']\le 4$, or dimension $n\le 8$.
We study ideal lattices in $\mathbb{R}^2$ coming from real quadratic fields, and give an explicit method for computing all well-rounded twists of any such ideal lattice. We apply this to ideal lattices coming from Markoff numbers to construct infinite families of non-equivalent planar lattices with good sphere-packing radius and good minimum product distance. We also provide a complete classification of all real quadratic fields such that the orthogonal lattice is the only well-rounded twist of the lattice corresponding to the ring of integers.
Cyclic lattices are sublattices of $\mathbb Z^N$ that are preserved under the rotational shift operator. Cyclic lattices were introduced by D.~Micciancio and their properties were studied in the recent years by several authors due to their importance in cryptography. In particular, Peikert and Rosen showed that on cyclic lattices in prime dimensions, the shortest independent vectors problem SIVP reduces to the shortest vector problem SVP with a particularly small loss in approximation factor, as compared to general lattices. In this paper, we further investigate geometric properties of cyclic …
A sublattice of the three-dimensional integer lattice $\mathbb Z^3$ is called cubic sublattice if there exists a basis of the sublattice whose elements are pairwise orthogonal and of equal lengths. We show that for an integer vector $\mathbf v\in\mathbb Z^3$ whose squared length is divisible by $d^2$, there exists a cubic sublattice containing $\mathbf v$ with edge length $d$. This improves one of the main result of a paper [arxiv:0806.3943] of Goswick et al., where similar theorem was proved by using the decomposition theory of Hurwitz integral quaternions. We give an elementary proof heavily…
We study the number of two-dimensional sublattices of $\mathbb{Z^4}$ of a fixed covolume and construct the associated Dirichlet series. The latter is shown to be related to Eisenstein series on both $GL_4$ and its metaplectic double cover.
In this review, we count and classify certain sublattices of a given lattice, as motivated by crystallography. We use methods from algebra and algebraic number theory to find and enumerate the sublattices according to their index. In addition, we use tools from analytic number theory to determine the asymptotic behaviour of the corresponding counting functions. Our main focus lies on similar sublattices and coincidence site lattices, the latter playing an important role in crystallography. As many results are algebraic in nature, we also generalise them to $\mathbb{Z}$-modules embedded in $\ma…
Nearly orthogonal lattices were formally defined in [4], where their applications to image compression were also discussed. The idea of ``near orthogonality" in $2$-dimensions goes back to the work of Gauss. In this paper, we focus on well-rounded nearly orthogonal lattices in~$\mathbb R^n$ and investigate their geometric and optimization properties. Specifically, we prove that the sphere packing density function on the space of well-rounded lattices in dimension $n\geq 3$ does not have any local maxima on the nearly orthogonal set and has only one local minimum there: at the integer lattice~$…
When $\mathbb{Z}^d$ is represented as a finite disjoint union of translated integer sublattices, the translated sublattices must possess some special properties. Such a representation is called a \emph{lattice tiling}. We develop a theoretical framework, based on multiple residues and dual groups, to provide a set of necessary and sufficient conditions for such a lattice tiling to exist. We also investigate the question of when a lattice tiling must possess at least two translated sublattices which are translates of one another.
Let $N/K$ be a Galois extension of $p$-adic number fields and let $V$ be a $p$-adic representation of the absolute Galois group $G_K$ of $K$. The equivariant local $ε$-constant conjecture $C_{EP}^{na}(N/K, V)$ is related to the compatibility of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture with the functional equation of Artin $L$-functions and it can be formulated as the vanishing of a certain element $R_{N/K}$ in $K_0(\mathbb Z_p[G],\mathbb Q_p^c[G])$. One of the main technical difficulties in the computation of $R_{N/K}$ arises from the so-called cohomological term $C_{N/K}$, which requires th…
We find sharp absolute constants $C_1$ and $C_2$ with the following property: every well-rounded lattice of rank 3 in a Euclidean space has a minimal basis so that the solid angle spanned by these basis vectors lies in the interval $[C_1,C_2]$. In fact, we show that these absolute bounds hold for a larger class of lattices than just well-rounded, and the upper bound holds for all. We state a technical condition on the lattice that may prevent it from satisfying the absolute lower bound on the solid angle, in which case we derive a lower bound in terms of the ratios of successive minima of the …
We give an asymptotic formula for the number of sublattices $Λ\subseteq \mathbb{Z}^d$ of index at most $X$ for which $\mathbb{Z}^d/Λ$ has rank at most $m$, answering a question of Nguyen and Shparlinski. We compare this result to recent work of Stanley and Wang on Smith Normal Forms of random integral matrices and discuss connections to the Cohen-Lenstra heuristics. Our arguments are based on Petrogradsky's formulas for the cotype zeta function of $\mathbb{Z}^d$, a multivariable generalization of the subgroup growth zeta function of $\mathbb{Z}^d$.
We investigate properties of zeta functions of polynomial rings and their quotients, generalizing and extending some classical results about Dedekind zeta functions of number fields. By an application of Delange's version of the Ikehara Tauberian Theorem, we are then able to determine the asymptotic order of the ideal counting function in such rings. As a result, we produce counting estimates on ideal lattices of bounded determinant coming from fixed number fields, as well as density estimates for any ideal lattices among all sublattices of $\mathbb Z^d$. We conclude with some more general spe…
For a positive integer $s$, a lattice $L$ is said to be $s$-integrable if $\sqrt{s}\cdot L$ is isometric to a sublattice of $\mathbb{Z}^n$ for some integer $n$. Conway and Sloane found two minimal non $2$-integrable lattices of rank $12$ and determinant $7$ in 1989. We find two more ones of rank $12$ and determinant $15$. Then we introduce a method of embedding a given lattice into a unimodular lattice, which plays a key role in proving minimality of non $2$-integrable lattices and finding candidates for non $2$-integrable lattices.
We prove that if $\mathcal{L} \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is a lattice such that $\det(\mathcal{L}') \geq 1$ for all sublattices $\mathcal{L}' \subseteq \mathcal{L}$, then \[ \sum_{\substack{\mathbf{y}\in\mathcal{L}\\\mathbf{y}\neq\mathbf0}} (\|\mathbf{y}\|^2+q)^{-s} \leq \sum_{\substack{\mathbf{z} \in \mathbb{Z}^n\\\mathbf{z}\neq\mathbf{0}}} (\|\mathbf{z}\|^2+q)^{-s} \] for all $s > n/2$ and all $0 \leq q \leq (2s-n)/(n+2)$, with equality if and only if $\mathcal{L}$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}^n$.
We construct several families of perfect sublattices with minimum $4$ of $\mathbb Z^d$. In particular, the number of $d-$dimensional perfect integral lattices with minimum $4$ grows faster than $d^k$ for every exponent $k$.
We say that a Euclidean lattice in $\mathbb R^n$ is permutation invariant if its automorphism group has non-trivial intersection with the symmetric group $S_n$, i.e., if the lattice is closed under the action of some non-identity elements of $S_n$. Given a fixed element $τ\in S_n$, we study properties of the set of all lattices closed under the action of $τ$: we call such lattices $τ$-invariant. These lattices naturally generalize cyclic lattices introduced by Micciancio, which we studied in a recent paper. Continuing our investigation, we discuss some basic properties of permutation invariant…
For a lattice Λin the complex plane, let K_Λ be the field of Λ-elliptic functions. For two relatively prime integers p (respectively q) greater than 1, consider the endomorphisms ψ(resp. ϕ) of K_Λ given by multiplication by p (resp. q) on the elliptic curve \mathbb{C}/Λ. We prove that if f (resp. g) are complex Laurent power series that satisfy linear difference equations over K_Λ with respect to ϕ(resp. ψ) then there is a dichotomy. Either, for some sublattice Λ' of Λ, one of f or g belongs to the ring K_{Λ'}[z,z^{-1},ζ(z,Λ')], where ζ(z,Λ') is the Weierstrass zeta function, or f and g are al…
$ \newcommand{\R}{\mathbb{R}} \newcommand{\lat}{\mathcal{L}} $We prove a conjecture due to Dadush, showing that if $\lat \subset \R^n$ is a lattice such that $\det(\lat') \ge 1$ for all sublattices $\lat' \subseteq \lat$, then \[ \sum_{\vec y \in \lat} e^{-πt^2 \|\vec y\|^2} \le 3/2 \; , \] where $t := 10(\log n + 2)$. From this we derive bounds on the number of short lattice vectors, which can be viewed as a partial converse to Minkowski's celebrated first theorem. We also derive a bound on the covering radius.
