We study the blow-up problem of one-dimensional nonlinear heat equations. Our result shows that for a certain class of initial conditions, the solutions blow up in finite time and we characterize the asymptotic dynamics of these solutions. The approach is analogous to one used in bifurcation theory and our techniques can be regarded as a time-dependent version of the Lyapunov-Schmidt decomposition.
Basing on the relations between a system of ODE and a system of parabolic equations, we establish some general theories in heat transfer about quenching, global existence and blowup phenomena, obtain the conditions(even watershed) on f(u,v), g(u,v), a(x) and b(x) which let the solution be global existence, quench or blow up, and estimate the bounds for blowup time and quenching time.
In this paper, we consider the heat flow for Yang-Mills connections on $\mathbb{R}^5 \times SO(5)$. In the $SO(5)-$equivariant setting, the Yang-Mills heat equation reduces to a single semilinear reaction-diffusion equation for which an explicit self-similar blowup solution was found by Weinkove \cite{Wei04}. We prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of this solution under small perturbations. In particular, we show that there exists an open set of initial conditions in a suitable topology such that the corresponding solutions blow up in finite time and converge to a non-trivial self-similar…
We prove Strichartz estimates in similarity coordinates for the radial wave equation with a self similar potential in dimensions $d\geq 3$. As an application of these, we establish the asymptotic stability of the ODE blowup profile of the energy critical radial nonlinear wave equation for $3\leq d\leq 6$.
The finite time blow-up of solutions for 1-D NLS with oscillating nonlinearities is shown in two domains: (1) the whole real line where the nonlinear source is acting in the interior of the domain and (2) the right half-line where the nonlinear source is placed at the boundary point. The distinctive feature of this work is that the the initial energy is allowed to be non-negative and the momentum is allowed to be infinite in contrast to the previous literature on the blow-up of solutions with time dependent nonlinearities. The common finite momentum assumption is removed by using a compactly s…
We consider the heat flow of corotational harmonic maps from $\mathbb R^3$ to the three-sphere and prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of a particular self-similar shrinker that is not known in closed form. Our method provides a novel, systematic, robust, and constructive approach to the stability analysis of self-similar blowup in parabolic evolution equations. In particular, we completely avoid using delicate Lyapunov functionals, monotonicity formulas, indirect arguments, or fragile parabolic structure like the maximum principle. As a matter of fact, our approach reduces the nonlinear …
We consider the semilinear heat equation with a superlinear power nonlinearity in the Sobolev subcritical range. We construct a solution which blows up in finite time only at the origin, with a completely new blow-up profile, which is cross-shaped. Our method is general and extends to the construction of other solutions blowing up only at the origin, with a large variety of blow-up profiles, degenerate or not.
Blowup analysis for solutions of a general evolution equation with nonlocal diffusion and localized source is performed. By comparison with recent results on global-in-time solutions, a dichotomy result is obtained.
We consider in this paper a perturbation of the standard semilinear heat equation by a term involving the space derivative and a non-local term. In some earlier work (Abdelhedi-Zaag JDE 2021), we constructed a blow-up solution for that equation, and showed that it blows up (at least) at the origin. We also derived the so called "intermediate blow-up profile". In this paper, we prove the single point blow-up property and determine the final blow-up profile.
This note is devoted to a simple proof of blowup of solutions for a nonlinear heat equation. The criterion for a blowup is expressed in terms of a Morrey space norm and is in a sense complementary to conditions guaranteeing the global in time existence of solutions. The method goes back to H. Fujita and extends to other nonlinear parabolic equations.
We investigate the $p-$Laplace heat equation $u_t-Δ_p u=ζ(t)f(u)$ on a bounded smooth domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$. Using differential inequalities arguments, we prove blow-up results under suitable conditions on $ζ, f$, and the initial data $u_0$. We also give an upper bound for the blow-up time in each case.
We introduce a straightforward method to analyze the blow-up of systems of ordinary differential inequalities, and apply it to study the blow- up of solutions to a weakly coupled system of semilinear heat equations. We prove that the solution blows up in a finite time under the subcritical condition. Moreover, we give estimates of lifespan of the solution and lower estimates of the blow-up rate for a localized average of each component.
The harmonic map heat flow is a geometric flow well known to produce solutions whose gradient blows up in finite time. A popular model for investigating the blow-up is the heat flow for maps $\mathbb R^{d}\to S^{d}$, restricted to equivariant maps. This model displays a variety of possible blow-up mechanisms, examples include self-similar solutions for $3\le d\le 6$ and a so-called Type II blow-up in the critical dimension $d=2$. Here we present the first constructive example of Type II blow-up in higher dimensions: for each $d\ge7$ we construct a countable family of Type II solutions, each ch…
Local and global properties of minimal solutions for the heat equation generated by the Dirichlet fractional Laplacian negatively perturbed by Hardy's potentials on open subsets of $\R^d$ are analyzed. As a byproduct we obtain instantaneous blow-up of nonnegative solutions in the supercritical case.
This paper is concerned with blow-up solutions of the five dimensional energy critical heat equation $u_t=Δu+|u|^\frac{4}{3}u$. A goal of this paper is to show the existence of type II blowup solutions which behave as $\|u(t)\|_\infty\sim(T-t)^{-3k}$ ($k=2,3,\cdots$). Our solutions are the same one formally derived by Filippas, Herrero and Velázquez \cite{Filippas}.
We address a general system of nonlinear Dirac equations in (1+1) dimensions and prove nonexistence of classical self-similar blowup solutions in the space of bounded functions. While this argument does not exclude the possibility of finite-time blowup, it still suggests that smooth solutions to the nonlinear Dirac equations in (1+1) dimensions do not develop self-similar singularities in a finite time. In the particular case of the cubic Dirac equations, we characterize (unbounded) self-similar solutions in the closed analytical form.
We derive a blow-up dichotomy for positive solutions of fractional semilinear heat equations on the whole space. That is, within a certain class of convex source terms, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition on the source for all positive solutions to become unbounded in finite time. Moreover, we show that this condition is equivalent to blow-up of all positive solutions of a closely-related scalar ordinary differential equation.
In this paper, we consider a semilinear parabolic equation with nonlinear nonlocal Neumann boundary condition and nonnegative initial datum. We first prove global existence results. We then give some criteria on this problem which determine whether the solutions blow up in finite time for large or for all nontrivial initial data. Finally, we show that under certain conditions blow-up occurs only on the boundary.
We consider in this paper a perturbation of the standard semilinear heat equation by a term involving the space derivative and a non-local term. In some earlier works [1, 2], we constructed a solution $u$ for that equation such that $u$ and $\nabla u$ both blow up at the origin and only there. We also gave the final blow-up profile. In this paper, we refine our construction method in order to get a sharper estimate on the gradient at blow-up.
We consider the following Cauchy problem for three dimensional energy critical heat equation \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} u_t=Δu+u^{5},~&\mbox{ in } \ {\mathbb R}^3 \times (0,T),\\ u(x,0)=u_0(x),~&\mbox{ in } \ {\mathbb R}^3. \end{cases} \end{equation*} We construct type II finite time blow-up solution $u(x,t)$ with the blow-up rates $ \| u\|_{L^\infty} \sim (T-t)^{-k}$, where $ k=1,2,... $. This gives a rigorous proof of the formal computations by Filippas, Herrero and Velazquez \cite{fhv}. This is the first instance of type II finite time blow-up for three dimensional energy critical heat…
We consider the semilinear heat equation $u_t=Δu+|u|^{p-1}u-|u|^{q-1}u$ in $\mathbb{R}^n\times(0,T)$, where $n=5$, $p=\frac{n+2}{n-2}$ and $q\in(0,1)$. By the presence of $-|u|^{q-1}u$, this equation has a finite time extinction property. We show the existence of a new type of blowup solutions by using this property. In fact, we obtain such blowup solutions by connecting a specific blowup solution of $u_t=Δu+|u|^{p-1}u$ and a specific solution of $u_t=Δu-|u|^{q-1}u$, and by adding correction terms.
Refined structures of blowup for non-collapsing maximal solution to a semilinear parabolic equation are studied. We will prove that the blowup set is empty for non-collapsing blowing-up in subcritical case, and all finite time non-collapsing blowing-up must be type II in critical case. When p>p_S=(N+2)/(N-2) for N>=3, the Hausdorff dimension of the blowup set for maximal solution whose energy is non-collapsing is shown to be no greater than N-2-4/(p-1), which answers a question proposed in [7] positively. At the end of this paper, we also present some new examples of collapsing and non-collaps…
This paper concerns a controllability problem for blowup points on heat equation. It can be described as follows: In the absence of control, the solution to the linear heat system globally exists in a bounded domain $Ω$. While, for a given time $T>0$ and a point $a$ in this domain, we find a feedback control, which is acted on an internal subset $ω$ of this domain, such that the corresponding solution to this system blows up at time $T$ and holds unique point $a$. We show that $a\in ω$ can be the unique blowup point of the corresponding solution with a certain feedback control, and for any fee…
We consider in this paper a perturbation of the standard semilinear heat equation by a term involving the space derivative and a non-local term. We prove the existence of a blow-up solution, and give its blow-up profile. Our proof relies on the following method: we linearize the equation (in similarity variables) around the expected profile, then, we control the nonpositive directions of the spectrum thanks to the decreasing properties of the kernel. Finally, we use a topological argument to control the positive directions of the spectrum.
In this paper, the authors consider an initial boundary value problem for the heat flow of equation of surfaces with constant mean curvatures, which was investigated in [On the heat flow of equation of surfaces of constant mean curvatures, Manuscripta Mathematica, 2011, 134: 259-271] by Huang et al., where global well-posedness and finite time blow-up of regular solutions were obtained. Their results are complemented in this paper in the sense that some new conditions on the initial data are provided for the solutions to develop finite time singularity.
In this article, we study a semi-linear heat equation with the nonlinearity which is the product of polynomial and logarithmic functions. Using the invariance of the potential well(s), we have established the global existence and exponential decay estimates of solutions in $L^2$ - norm without having any restriction on the exponent in the source term under suitable conditions on the initial data. Moreover, finite time blow up of solutions at subcritical, critical and supercritical initial energy levels is also discussed.
We consider the energy critical semilinear heat equation $$ \left\{\begin{aligned} &\partial_t u-Δu =|u|^{\frac{4}{n-2}}u &\mbox{in } {\mathbb R}^n\times(0,T),\\ &u(x,0)=u_0(x), \end{aligned}\right. $$ where $ n\geq 3$, $u_0\in L^\infty({\mathbb R}^n)$, and $T\in {\mathbb R}^+$ is the first blow up time. We prove that if $ n \geq 7$ and $ u_0 \geq 0$, then any blowup must be of Type I, i.e., \[\|u(\cdot, t)\|_{L^\infty({\mathbb R}^n)}\leq C(T-t)^{-\frac{1}{p-1}}.\] A similar result holds for bounded convex domains. The proof relies on a reverse inner-outer gluing mechanism and delicate analysi…
We consider the semilinear heat equation $$\partial_t u -Δu =f(u), \quad (x,t)\in \mathbb{R}^N\times [0,T),\qquad (1)$$ with $f(u)=|u|^{p-1}u\log^a (2+u^2)$, where $p>1$ is Sobolev subcritical and $a\in \mathbb{R}$. We first show an upper bound for any blow-up solution of (1). Then, using this estimate and the logarithmic property, we prove that the exact blow-up rate of any singular solution of (1) is given by the ODE solution associated with (1), namely $u' =|u|^{p-1}u\log^a (2+u^2)$. In other terms, all blow-up solutions in the Sobolev subcritical range are Type I solutions. Up to our knowl…
In this paper, we use the modified potential well method to study the long time behaviors of solutions to the heat flow of H-system in a bounded smooth domain of $R^2$. Global existence and finite time blowup of solutions are proved when the initial energy is in three cases. When the initial energy is low or critical, we not only give a threshold result for the global existence and blowup of solutions, but also obtain the decay rate of the $L^2$ norm for global solutions. When the initial energy is high, sufficient conditions for the global existence and blowup of solutions are also provided. …
We consider the energy critical four dimensional semi-linear heat equation \[ \partial_{t}v-Δv-v^{3}=0, \quad(t,x)\in \mathbb{R}\times \mathbb{R}^4. \] Formal computation of Filippas et al. (R. Soc. Lond. Proc. 2000) conjectures the existence of a sequence of type II blow-up solutions with various blow-up rates \[ \|v(t)\|_{L^\infty(\mathbb{R}^4)}\approx \frac{|\log(T-t)|^{\frac{2L}{2L-1}}}{(T-t)^L} ,\quad L=1,2,\cdots.\] Schweyer (J. Funct. Anal. 2012) rigorously constructs a type II blow-up solution for the case $L=1$. In this paper, we show the existence of type II blow-up solution for $L=2…
