We consider the energy critical semilinear heat equation $$ \left\{\begin{aligned} &\partial_t u-Δu =|u|^{\frac{4}{n-2}}u &\mbox{in } {\mathbb R}^n\times(0,T),\\ &u(x,0)=u_0(x), \end{aligned}\right. $$ where $ n\geq 3$, $u_0\in L^\infty({\mathbb R}^n)$, and $T\in {\mathbb R}^+$ is the first blow up time. We prove that if $ n \geq 7$ and $ u_0 \geq 0$, then any blowup must be of Type I, i.e., \[\|u(\cdot, t)\|_{L^\infty({\mathbb R}^n)}\leq C(T-t)^{-\frac{1}{p-1}}.\] A similar result holds for bounded convex domains. The proof relies on a reverse inner-outer gluing mechanism and delicate analysis of bubbling behavior (bubbling tower/cluster).
We address a general system of nonlinear Dirac equations in (1+1) dimensions and prove nonexistence of classical self-similar blowup solutions in the space of bounded functions. While this argument does not exclude the possibility of finite-time blowup, it still suggests that smooth solutions to the nonlinear Dirac equations in (1+1) dimensions do not develop self-similar singularities in a finite time. In the particular case of the cubic Dirac equations, we characterize (unbounded) self-similar solutions in the closed analytical form.
The nonexistence of global in time solutions is studied for a class of aggregation equations involving Lévy diffusion operators and general interaction kernels.
Refined structures of blowup for non-collapsing maximal solution to a semilinear parabolic equation are studied. We will prove that the blowup set is empty for non-collapsing blowing-up in subcritical case, and all finite time non-collapsing blowing-up must be type II in critical case. When p>p_S=(N+2)/(N-2) for N>=3, the Hausdorff dimension of the blowup set for maximal solution whose energy is non-collapsing is shown to be no greater than N-2-4/(p-1), which answers a question proposed in [7] positively. At the end of this paper, we also present some new examples of collapsing and non-collaps…
Consider the integral equation \begin{equation*} f^{q-1}(x)=\int_Ω\frac{f(y)}{|x-y|^{n-α}}dy,\ \ f(x)>0,\quad x\in \overline Ω, \end{equation*} where $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is a smooth bounded domain. For $1<α<n$, the existence of energy maximizing positive solution in subcritical case $2<q<\frac{2n}{n+α}$, and nonexistence of energy maximizing positive solution in critical case $q=\frac{2n}{n+α}$ are proved in \cite{DZ2017}. For $α>n$, the existence of energy minimizing positive solution in subcritical case $0<q<\frac{2n}{n+α}$, and nonexistence of energy minimizing positive solution in crit…
Semilinear elliptic equations which give rise to solutions blowing up at the boundary are perturbed by a Hardy potential. The size of this potential effects the existence of a certain type of solutions (large solutions): if the potential is too small, then no large solution exists. The presence of the Hardy potential requires a new definition of large solutions, following the pattern of the associated linear problem. Nonexistence and existence results for different types of solutions will be given. Our considerations are based on a Phragmen-Lindelof type theorem which enables us to classify th…
In the last twenty years, there have been significant advances in the study of the blow-up phenomenon for the critical generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation, including the determination of sufficient conditions for blowup, the stability of blowup in a refined topology and the classification of minimal mass blowup. Exotic blow-up solutions with a continuum of blow-up rates and multi-point blow-up solutions were also constructed. However, all these results, as well as numerical simulations, involve the bubbling of a solitary wave going at infinity at the blow-up time, which means that the blow-…
The existence of finite time blowup solutions for the two-dimensional Landau--Lifshitz equation is a long-standing problem, which exists in the literature at least since 2001 (E, Mathematics Unlimited--2001 and Beyond, Springer, Berlin, P.410, 2001). A more refined description in the equivariant class is given in (van den Berg and Williams, European J. Appl. Math., 24(6), 912--948, 2013). In this paper, we consider the blowup dynamics of the Landau--Lifshitz equation $$ \partial_tu=\mathfrak{a}_1u\timesΔu-\mathfrak{a}_2u\times(u\timesΔu),\quad x\in\mathbb{R}^2, $$ where $u\in\mathbb{S}^2$, $\m…
In this paper we consider the solvability of pseudodifferential operators in the case when the principal symbol vanishes of order $k \ge 2 $ at a nonradial involutive manifold $Σ_2$. We shall assume that the operator is of subprincipal type, which means that the $ k$:th inhomogeneous blowup at $Σ_2$ of the refined principal symbol is of principal type with Hamilton vector field parallel to the base $Σ_2$, but transversal to the symplectic leaves of $Σ_2$ at the characteristics. When $k = \infty $ this blowup reduces to the subprincipal symbol. We also assume that the blowup is essentially cons…
We address the question whether a singularity in a three-dimensional incompressible inviscid fluid flow can occur in finite time. Analytical considerations and numerical simulations suggest high-symmetry flows being a promising candidate for a finite-time blowup. Utilizing Lagrangian and geometric non-blowup criteria, we present numerical evidence against the formation of a finite-time singularity for the high-symmetry vortex dodecapole initial condition. We use data obtained from high resolution adaptively refined numerical simulations and inject Lagrangian tracer particles to monitor geometr…
We investigate existence and nonexistence of stationary stable nonconstant solutions, i.e. patterns, of semilinear parabolic problems in bounded domains of Riemannian manifolds satisfying Robin boundary conditions. These problems arise in several models in applications, in particular in Mathematical Biology. We point out the role both of the nonlinearity and of geometric objects such as the Ricci curvature of the manifold, the second fundamental form of the boundary of the domain and its mean curvature. Special attention is devoted to surfaces of revolution and to spherically symmetric manifol…
We construct solutions to the two dimensional parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel model for chemotaxis that blow up in finite time $T$. The solution is decomposed as the sum of a stationary state concentrated at scale $λ$ and of a perturbation. We rely on a detailed spectral analysis for the linearized dynamics in the parabolic neighbourhood of the singularity performed by the authors, providing a refined expansion of the perturbation. Our main result is the construction of a stable dynamics in the full nonradial setting for which the stationary state collapses with the universal law $λ\sim 2e^{-\…
In this paper, we study the theory of the global well-posedness and scattering for the energy-critical wave equation with a cubic convolution nonlinearity $u_{tt}-Δu+(|x|^{-4}\ast|u|^2)u=0$ in spatial dimension $d \geq 5$. The main difficulties are the absence of the classical finite speed of propagation (i.e. the monotonic local energy estimate on the light cone), which is a fundamental property to show the global well-posedness and then to obtain scattering for the wave equations with the local nonlinearity $u_{tt}-Δu+|u|^\frac4{d-2}u=0$. To compensate it, we resort to the extended causality…
We analyze nonnegative solutions of the nonlinear elliptic problem $Δu=\frac{λf(x)}{u^2}+P$, where $λ>0$ and $P\geq0$, on a bounded domain $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^N$ ($N\geq 1$) with a Dirichlet boundary condition. This equation models an electrostatic--elastic membrane system with an external pressure $P\geq 0$, where $λ>0$ denotes the applied voltage. First, we completely address the existence and nonexistence of positive solutions. The classification of all possible singularities at $|x|=0$ for nonnegative solutions $u(x)$ satisfying $u(0)=0$ is then analyzed for the special case where $Ω=B_1(0)…
Liouville theorems for scaling invariant nonlinear parabolic equations and systems (saying that the equation or system does not possess positive entire solutions) guarantee optimal universal estimates of solutions of related initial and initial-boundary value problems. In the case of the nonlinear heat equation $$u_t-Δu=u^p\quad\hbox{in}\quad {R}^n\times{R}, \qquad p>1, $$ the nonexistence of positive classical solutions in the subcritical range $p(n-2)<n+2$ has been conjectured for a long time, but all known results require either a more restrictive assumption on $p$ or deal with a special cl…
In the present paper, we consider the coupled Schrödinger systems with critical exponent: \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -Δu_i+λ_{i}u_i=\sum\limits_{j=1}^{d} β_{ij}|u_j|^{3}|u_i|u_i \quad ~\text{ in } Ω,\\ u_i \in H_0^1(Ω) ,\quad i= 1,2,...,d. \end{cases} \end{equation*} Here, $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{3}$ is a smooth bounded domain, $d \geq 2$, $β_{ii}>0$ for every $i$, and $β_{ij}=β_{ji}$ for $i \neq j$. We study a Brézis-Nirenberg type problem: $-λ_{1}(Ω)<λ_{1},\cdots,λ_{d}<-λ^*(Ω)$, where $λ_{1}(Ω)$ is the first eigenvalue of $-Δ$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions and $λ^*(Ω)\in (0, λ_1(Ω))$…
In a recent work, Duong, Ghoul and Zaag determined the gradient profile for blowup solutions of standard semilinear heat equation with power nonlinearities in the (supposed to be) generic case. Their method refines the constructive techniques introduced by Bricmont and Kupiainen and further developed by Merle and Zaag. In this paper, we extend their refinement to the problem about the reconnection of vortex lines with the boundary in a type-II superconductor under planar approximation, a physical model derived by Chapman, Hunton and Ockendon featuring the finite time quenching for the nonlinea…
