In this paper, we construct a singular standing ring solution of the nonlinear heat in the radial case. We give rigorous proof for the existence of a ring blow-up solution in finite time. This result was predicted formally by Baruch, Fibich and Gavish \cite{BFGpd10}. We also prove the stability of these dynamics among radially symmetric solutions.
We study the existence and stability of standing waves for a system of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with quadratic interaction in dimensions $d\leq 3$. We also study the characterization of finite time blow-up solutions with minimal mass to the system under mass resonance condition in dimension $d=4$. Finite time blow-up solutions with minimal mass are showed to be (up to symmetries) pseudo-conformal transformations of a ground state standing wave.
This paper is concerned with strong blow-up instability (Definition 1.3) for standing wave solutions to the system of the quadratic nonlinear Klein-Gordon equations. In the single case, namely the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation with power type nonlinearity, stability and instability for standing wave solutions have been extensively studied. On the other hand, in the case of our system, there are no results concerning the stability and instability as far as we know. In this paper, we prove strong blow-up instability for the standing wave to our system. The proof is based on the techniques in O…
We consider the focusing mass supercritical nonlinear Schrödinger equation with rotation \begin{equation*} iu_{t}=-\frac{1}{2}Δu+\frac{1}{2}V(x)u-|u|^{p-1}u+L_Ωu,\quad (x,t)\in \mathbb{R}^{N}\times\mathbb{R}, \end{equation*} where $N=2$ or $3$ and $V(x)$ is an anisotropic harmonic potential. Here $L_Ω$ is the quantum mechanical angular momentum operator. We establish conditions for global existence and blow-up in the energy space. Moreover, we prove strong instability of standing waves under certain conditions on the rotation and the frequency of the wave. Finally, we construct orbitally stabl…
We study strong instability (by blow-up) of the standing waves for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with $δ$-interaction on a star graph $Γ$. The key ingredient is a novel variational technique applied to the standing wave solutions being minimizers of a specific variational problem. We also show well-posedness of the corresponding Cauchy problem in the domain of the self-adjoint operator which defines $δ$-interaction. This permits to prove virial identity for the $H^1$- solutions to the Cauchy problem. We also prove certain strong instability results for the standing waves of the NLS-$δ'$ e…
We rigorously construct radial $H^1$ solutions to the 3d cubic focusing NLS equation $i\partial_t ψ+ Δψ+ 2 |ψ|^2ψ=0$ that blow-up along a contracting sphere. With blow-up time set to $t=0$, the solutions concentrate on a sphere at radius $\sim t^{1/3}$ but focus towards this sphere at the faster rate $\sim t^{2/3}$. Such dynamics were originally proposed heuristically by Degtyarev-Zakharov-Rudakov (1975) and independently later in Holmer-Roudenko (2007), where it was demonstrated to be consistent with all conservation laws of this equation. In the latter paper, it was proposed as a solution th…
We prove that if $u(t)$ is a log-log blow-up solution, of the type studied by Merle-Raphaël (2001-2005), to the $L^2$ critical focusing NLS equation $i\partial_t u +Δu + |u|^{4/d} u=0$ with initial data $u_0\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^d)$ in the cases $d=1, 2$, then $u(t)$ remains bounded in $H^1$ away from the blow-up point. This is obtained without assuming that the initial data $u_0$ has any regularity beyond $H^1(\mathbb{R}^d)$. As an application of the $d=1$ result, we construct an open subset of initial data in the radial energy space $H^1_{rad}(\mathbb{R}^3)$ with corresponding solutions that bl…
We prove there exist solutions to the focusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in three dimensions that blowup on a circle, in the sense of L^2 concentration on a ring, bounded H^1 norm outside any surrounding toroid, and growth of the global H^1 norm with the log-log rate. Analogous behaviour occurs in any higher dimension. That is, there exists data for which the corresponding evolution by cubic NLS explodes on a set of co-dimension two. To simplify the exposition, the proof is presented in dimension three, with remarks to indicate the adaptations in higher dimension.
We study the instability of standing wave solutions for nonlinear Schrödinger equations with a one-dimensional harmonic potential in dimension $N\ge 2$. We prove that if the nonlinearity is $L^2$-critical or supercritical in dimension $N-1$, then any ground states are strongly unstable by blowup.
We study strong instability (instability by blowup) of standing wave solutions for a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an attractive delta potential and $L^2$-supercritical power nonlinearity in one space dimension. We also compare our sufficient condition on strong instability with some known results on orbital instability.
We prove, for the energy critical, focusing NLS, that for data whose energy is smaller than that of the standing wave, and whose homogeneous Sobolev norm H^1 is smaller than that of the standing wave and which is radial, we have global well-posedness and scattering in dimensions 3, 4 and 5. This is sharp since if the data is in the inhomogeneous Sobolev space H^1, of energy smaller than the standing wave but of larger homogeneous H^1 norm, we have blow-up in finite time. The result follows from a general method that we introduce into this type of critical problem. By concentration-compactness …
In this paper we perform a fine blow-up analysis for a fourth order elliptic equation involving critical Sobolev exponent, related to the prescription of some conformal invariant on the standard sphere. We derive from this analysis some a priori estimates in dimension 5 and 6. On the five dimensionl sphere these a priori estimates combined with the perturbation result of Part I allow us to obtain some existence results. On the six dimensional sphere we prove the existence of at least one solution when an associated index is different from zero.
In this paper we perform a refined blow up analysis of finite energy approximated solutions to a Nirenberg type problem on half spheres. The later consists of prescribing, under minimal boundary conditions, the scalar curvature to be a given function. In particular we give a precise location of blow up points and blow up rates. Such an analysis shows that the blow up picture of the Nirenberg problem on half spheres is far more complicated that in the case of closed spheres. Indeed besides the combination of interior and boundary blow ups, there are non simple blow up points for subcritical sol…
For the 3d cubic nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation, which has critical (scaling) norms $L^3$ and $\dot H^{1/2}$, we first prove a result establishing sufficient conditions for global existence and sufficient conditions for finite-time blow-up. For the rest of the paper, we focus on the study of finite-time radial blow-up solutions, and prove a result on the concentration of the $L^3$ norm at the origin. Two disparate possibilities emerge, one which coincides with solutions typically observed in numerical experiments that consist of a specific bump profile with maximum at the origin and focu…
In this paper we will continue the analysis of two dimensional Schrödinger equation with a fixed, pointwise, nonlinearity started in [2, 13]. In this model, the occurrence of a blow-up phenomenon has two peculiar features: the energy threshold under which all solutions blow up is strictly negative and coincides with the infimum of the energy of the standing waves; there is no critical power nonlinearity, i.e., for every power there exist blow-up solutions. Here we study the stability properties of stationary states to verify whether the anomalies mentioned before have any counterpart on the st…
For the Schrödinger map problem from 2+1 dimensions into the 2-sphere we prove the existence of equivariant finite time blow up solutions that are close to a dynamically rescaled lowest energy harmonic map, the scaling parameter being given by $t^{-ν}$ with $ν>3/2$.
In this paper we study the concentration profile of various kind of symmetric solutions of some semilinear elliptic problems arising in astrophysics and in diffusion phenomena. Using a reduction method we prove that doubly symmetric positive solutions in a $2m$-dimensional ball must concentrate and blow up on $(m-1)$-spheres as the concentration parameter tends to infinity. We also consider axially symmetric positive solutions in a ball in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N \geq 3$, and show that concentration and blow up occur on two antipodal points, as the concentration parameter tends to infinity.
Consider two perfectly conducting spheres in a homogeneous medium where the current-electric field relation is the power law. Electric field blows up in the L-infinity norm as the distance between the conductors tends to zero. We give here a concise rigorous justification of the rate of this blow-up in terms of the distance between the conductors.
We investigate in this article the long-time behaviour of the solutions to the energy-dependant, spatially-homogeneous, inelastic Boltzmann equation for hard spheres. This model describes a diluted gas composed of hard spheres under statistical description, that dissipates energy during collisions. We assume that the gas is "anomalous", in the sense that energy dissipation increases when temperature decreases. This allows the gas to cool down in finite time. We study existence and uniqueness of blow up profiles for this model, together with the trend to equilibrium and the cooling law associat…
Using mixed analytical and numerical methods we investigate the development of singularities in the heat flow for corotational harmonic maps from the $d$-dimensional sphere to itself for $3\leq d\leq 6$. By gluing together shrinking and expanding asymptotically self-similar solutions we construct global weak solutions which are smooth everywhere except for a sequence of times $T_1<T_2<...<T_k<\infty$ at which there occurs the type I blow-up at one of the poles of the sphere. We show that in the generic case the continuation beyond blow-up is unique, the topological degree of the map changes by…
We investigate the properties of standing waves to a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with inverse-square potential on the half-line. We first establish the existence of standing waves. Then, by a variational characterization of the ground states, we establish the orbital stability of standing waves for mass sub-critical nonlinearity. Owing to the non-compactness and the absence of translational invariance of the problem, we apply a profile decomposition argument. We obtain convergent minimizing sequences by comparing the problem to the problem at "infinity" (i.e., the equation without inverse s…
In this paper we develop a blow up analysis for solutions of a planar semilinear elliptic equation involving exponential nonlinearities. Such solutions describe cosmic strings, and we show how their blow up behaviour is characterised by new and surprising phenomena. For example in some cases, the blow up profile of the solution is described in terms of a differential problem that bares a geometrical meaning in the context of the uniformization of the Riemann sphere with conical singularities.
We consider the Schrödinger equation with nonlinear derivative term on $[0,+\infty)$ under Robin boundary condition at $0$. Using a virial argument, we obtain the existence of blowing up solutions and using variational techniques, we obtain stability and instability by blow up results for standing waves.
In this paper we study a Nirenberg type problem on standard half spheres $(\mathbb{S}^n_+,g_0)$ consisting of finding conformal metrics of prescribed scalar curvature and zero boundary mean curvature on the boundary $\partial \mathbb{S}^n_+$. This problem amounts to solve the following boundary value problem involving the critical Sobolev exponent: \begin{equation*} (\mathcal{P}) \quad \begin{cases} -\D_{g_0} u \, + \, \frac{n(n-2)}{4} u \, = K \, u^{\frac{n+2}{n-2}},\, u > 0 & \mbox{in } \mathbb{S}^n_+, \frac{\partial u}{\partial ν}\, =\, 0 & \mbox{on } \partial \mathbb{S}^n_+. \end{cases} \e…
We consider non-topological solutions of a nonlinear elliptic system problem derived from the $SU(3)$ Chern-Simons models in $\mathbb{R}^2$. The existence of non-topological solutions even for radial symmetric case has been a long standing open problem. Recently, [Choe, Kim, Lin (2015, 2016)] showed the existence of radial symmetric non-topological solution when the vortex points collapse. However, the arguments in [Choe, Kim, Lin (2015, 2016)] cannot work for an arbitrary configuration of vortex points. In this paper, we develop a new approach by using different scalings for different compone…
We construct blow-up solutions of the energy critical wave map equation on $\mathbb{R}^{2+1}\to \mathcal N$ with polynomial blow-up rate ($t^{-1-ν}$ for blow-up at $t=0$) in the case when $\mathcal{N}$ is a surface of revolution. Here we extend the blow-up range found by Cârstea ($ν>\frac 12$) based on the work by Krieger, Schlag and Tataru to $ν>0$. This work relies on and generalizes the recent result of Krieger and the author where the target manifold is chosen as the standard sphere.
We consider the focusing $L^2$-supercritical fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation \[ i\partial_t u - (-Δ)^s u = -|u|^αu, \quad (t,x) \in \mathbb{R}^+ \times \mathbb{R}^d, \] where $d\geq 2, \frac{d}{2d-1} \leq s <1$ and $\frac{4s}{d}<α<\frac{4s}{d-2s}$. By means of the localized virial estimate, we prove that the ground state standing wave is strongly unstable by blow-up. This result is a complement to a recent result of Peng-Shi [J. Math. Phys. 59 (2018), 011508] where the stability and instability of standing waves were studied in the $L^2$-subcritical and $L^2$-critical cases.
We study the $p$-harmonic flow from the unit disk $D^2$ to the unit sphere $S^2$ under rotational symmetry. We show that the Dirichlet problem with constant boundary conditions is locally well-posed in the class of classical solutions and we also give a sufficient criterion, in terms of the boundary condition, for the derivative of the solutions to blow-up in finite time.
We study the Cauchy problem for an inhomogeneous Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We first derive a sharp threshold for global existence and blow up of the solution. Then we construct and classify finite time blow up solutions at the minimal mass threshold. Additionally, using variational techniques, we study the existence, the orbital stability and instability of standing waves.
We present a general framework for constructing singular solutions of nonlinear evolution equations that become singular on a d-dimensional sphere, where d>1. The asymptotic profile and blowup rate of these solutions are the same as those of solutions of the corresponding one-dimensional equation that become singular at a point. We provide a detailed numerical investigation of these new singular solutions for the following equations: The nonlinear Schrodinger equation, the biharmonic nonlinear Schrodinger equation, the nonlinear heat equation and the nonlinear biharmonic heat equation.
In this article, we provide a simple method for constructing dispersive blow-up solutions to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Our construction mainly follows the approach in Bona, Ponce, Saut and Sparber [2]. However, we make use of the dispersive estimate to enjoy the smoothing effect of the Schrödinger propagator in the integral term appearing in Duhamel's formula. In this way, not only do we simplify the argument, but we also reduce the regularity requirement to construct dispersive blow-ups. In addition, we provide more examples of dispersive blow-ups by constructing solutions that blow…
We consider the focusing quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation posed on a rotationally symmetric surface, typically the sphere $S^2$ or the two dimensional hyperbolic space $H^2$. We prove the existence and the stability of solutions blowing up on a suitable curve with the log log speed. The Euclidean case is handled in Raphaël (2006) and our result shows that the log log rate persists in other geometries with the assumption of a radial symmetry of the manifold.
In this paper, we revisit the Cauchy problem for the three dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a constant magnetic field. We first establish sufficient conditions that ensure the existence of global in time and finite time blow-up solutions. In particular, we derive sharp thresholds for global existence versus blow-up for the equation with mass-critical and mass-supercritical nonlinearities. We next prove the existence and orbital stability of normalized standing waves which extend the previous known results to the mass-critical and mass-supercritical cases. To show the existence o…
We consider singular solutions of the biharmonic NLS. In the L^2-critical case, the blowup rate is bounded by a quartic-root power law, the solution approaches a self-similar profile, and a finite amount of L^2-norm, which is no less than the critical power, concentrates into the singularity ("strong collapse"). In the L^2-critical and supercritical cases, we use asymptotic analysis and numerical simulations to characterize singular solutions with a peak-type self-similar collapsing core. In the critical case, the blowup rate is slightly faster than a quartic-root, and the self-similar profile…
We consider the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation with inverse square potential \[ i\partial_t u + Δu + c|x|^{-2} u = - |u|^αu, \quad u(0) = u_0 \in H^1, \quad (t,x) \in \mathbb{R}^+ \times \mathbb{R}^d, \] where $d \geq 3$, $c\ne 0$, $c<λ(d)=\left(\frac{d-2}{2}\right)^2$ and $0<α\leq \frac{4}{d}$. Using the profile decomposition obtained recently by the first author \cite{Bensouilah}, we show that in the $L^2$-subcritical case, i.e. $0<α<\frac{4}{d}$, the sets of ground state standing waves are orbitally stable. In the $L^2$-critical case, i.e. $α=\frac{4}{d}$, we show that ground state…
We consider the following triple power nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation: iut + $Δ$u + a 1 |u|u + a 2 |u| 2 u + a 3 |u| 3 u = 0. We are interested in algebraic standing waves i.e standing waves with algebraic decay above equation in dimensions n (n = 1, 2, 3). We prove the instability of these solutions in the cases DDF (we use abbreviation D: defocusing (ai < 0), F:focusing (ai > 0)) and DFF when n = 2, 3 and in the case DFF with a1 = --1, a3 = 1 and a2 < 32/15$\sqrt$6 when n = 1. Under these assumptions, the standing waves are orbitally unstable in the case of small positive frequency. When t…
We consider the semilinear wave equation in the radial case with conformal subcritical power nonlinearity. If we consider a blow-up point different from the origin, then we exhibit a new Lyapunov functional which is a perturbation of the one dimensional case and extend all our previous results known in the one-dimensional case. In particular, we show that the blow-up set near non-zero non-characteristic points is of class $C^1$, and that the set of characteristic points is made of concentric spheres in finite number in $\{\frac 1R \le |x|\le R\}$ for any $R>1$.
In this paper we introduce the channel of energy argument to the study of energy critical wave maps into the sphere. More precisely, we prove a channel of energy type inequality for small energy wave maps, and as an application we show that for a wave map that has energy just above the degree one harmonic maps and that blows up in finite time, the solution asymptotically de-couples into a regular part plus a traveling wave with small momentum, in the energy space. In particular, the only possible form of energy concentration is through the concentration of traveling waves. This is often called…
We consider finite energy corotationnal wave maps with target manifold $\m S^2$. We prove that for a sequence of times, they decompose as a sum of decoupled harmonic maps in the light cone, and a smooth wave map (in the blow case) or a linear scattering term (in the global case), up to an error which tends to 0 in the energy space.
We are concerned with the critical threshold phenomena in the Restricted Euler (RE) equations. Using the spectral and trace dynamics we identify the critical thresholds for 3D and the 4D restricted Euler equations. It is well known that the 3D RE solutions blow up. Projected on the 3-sphere, the set of initial eigenvalues which give rise to bounded stable solutions is reduced to a single point, which confirms that 3D RE blowup is generic. In contrast, we identify a surprisingly rich set of the initial spectrum on the 4-sphere which yields global smooth solutions; thus, 4D regularity is generic…
Motivated by recent progress on a spinorial analogue of the Yamabe problem in the geometric literature, we study a conformally invariant spinor field equation on the $m$-sphere, $m\geq2$. Via variational methods, we study analytic aspects of the associated energy functional, culminating in a blow-up analysis.
In this note we give an alternative, shorter proof of the classical result of Berestycki and Cazenave on the instability by blow-up for the standing waves of some nonlinear Schrödinger equations.
We discuss compactness, blow-up and quantization phenomena for the prescribed $Q$-curvature equation $(-Δ)^m u_k=V_ke^{2mu_k}$ on open domains of $\R{2m}$. Under natural integral assumptions we show that when blow-up occurs, up to a subsequence $$\lim_{k\to \infty}\int_{Ω_0} V_ke^{2mu_k}dx=LΛ_1,$$ where $Ω_0\subset\subsetΩ$ is open and contains the blow-up points, $L\in\mathbb{N}$ and $Λ_1:=(2m-1)!\vol(S^{2m})$ is the total $Q$-curvature of the round sphere $S^{2m}$. Moreover, under suitable assumptions, the blow-up points are isolated. We do not assume that $V$ is positive.
We prove the existence of a family of blow-up solutions of a mean field equation on sphere. The solutions blow up at four points where the minimum value of a potential energy function (involving the Green's function) is attained. The four blow-up points form a regular tetrahedron. Moreover, the solutions we build have a group of symmetry $T_d$ which is isomorphic to the symmetric group $S_4$. Other families of solutions can be similarly constructed with blow-up points at the vertices of equilateral triangles on a great circle or other inscribed platonic solids (cubes, octahedrons, icosahedrons…
Let (M,g) be a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension n \geq 3. The Compactness Conjecture asserts that the set of constant scalar curvature metrics in the conformal class of g is compact unless (M,g) is conformally equivalent to the round sphere. In this paper, we construct counterexamples to this conjecture in dimensions n \geq 52.
Consider the equivariant wave map equation from Minkowski space to a rotationnally symmetric manifold which has an equator (example: the sphere). In dimension 3, this article gives a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a smooth self-similar blow up profile. More generally, we study the relation between 1. the minimizing properties of the equator map for the (elliptic) Dirichlet energy and 2. the existence of a smooth blow-up profile for the (hyperbolic) wave map problem. Several applications of this approach are described.
In this article, we study the multiplicity, asymptotics and stability of standing waves with prescribed mass $c>0$ for nonlinear Schrödinger equation with rotation in the mass-supercritical regime arising in Bose-Einstein condensation. Under suitable restriction on the rotation frequency, by searching critical points of the corresponding energy functional on the mass-sphere, we obtain a local minimizer $u_c$ and a mountain pass solution $\hat{u}_c$. %under suitable assumptions on the related parameters. Furthermore, we show that $u_c$ is a ground state for small mass $c>0$ and describe a mass …
We show a new example of blow-up behaviour for the prescribed $Q$-curvature equation in even dimension $6$ and higher, namely given a sequence $(V_k)\subset C^0(\mathbb{R}^{2n})$ suitably converging we construct {for $n\geq 3$} a sequence $(u_k)$ of radially symmetric solutions to the equation $${(-Δ)^n u_k=V_k e^{2n u_k} \quad \text{in }\mathbb{R}^{2n},}$$ with $u_k$ blowing up at the origin \emph{and} on a sphere. We also prove sharp blow-up estimates. This is in sharp contrast with the $4$-dimensional case studied by F. Robert (J. Diff. Eq. 2006).
