In this paper we perform a fine blow-up analysis for a fourth order elliptic equation involving critical Sobolev exponent, related to the prescription of some conformal invariant on the standard sphere. We derive from this analysis some a priori estimates in dimension 5 and 6. On the five dimensionl sphere these a priori estimates combined with the perturbation result of Part I allow us to obtain some existence results. On the six dimensional sphere we prove the existence of at least one solution when an associated index is different from zero.
In this paper we study some fourth order elliptic equation involving the critical Sobolev exponent, related to the prescription of a fourth order conformal invariant on the standard sphere. We use a topological method to prove the existence of at least a solution when the function to be prescribed is close to a constant and a finite dimensional map associated to it has non-zero degree.
We consider the problem of prescribing the scalar curvature and the boundary mean curvature of the standard half three sphere, by deforming conformally its standard metric. Using blow up analysis techniques and minimax arguments, we prove some existence and compactness results.
This paper is devoted to establishing the compactness and existence results of the solutions to the prescribing fractional $Q$-curvatures problem of order $2σ$ on $n$-dimensional standard sphere when $ n-2σ=2$, $σ=1+m/2,$ $m\in \mathbb{N}_{+}.$ The compactness results are novel and optimal. In addition, we prove a degree-counting formula of all solutions to achieve the existence. From our results, we can know where blow up occur. Furthermore, the sequence of solutions that blow up precisely at any finite distinct location can be constructed. It is worth noting that our results include the case…
The paper develops various estimates for solutions of a fourth order nonlinear PDE, which corresponds to prescribing the scalar curvature of a toric Kahler metric.
It is shown that self-similar blow-up for a fourth-order reaction-diffusion equation is incomplete in the sense that, in general, there exists a self-similar extension of solutions after blow-up. Other types of complete blow-up of non self-similar form are discussed.
The quasilinear fourth-order thin film equation in $R^N$ is shown to admit infinite countable families of global and blow-up similarity solutions, which are originated in the limit from eigenfunctions of the corresponding linear non-self-adjoint operators.
The fourth-order quasilinear reaction-diffusion equation with a p-Laplacian operator is shown to admit three types of blow-up. Self-similar patterns are first constructed for the regional blow-up case, where the rescaled problem admits a variational setting. Next, these were extended via a branching approach to non-variational problems.
In this paper we perform a refined blow up analysis of finite energy approximated solutions to a Nirenberg type problem on half spheres. The later consists of prescribing, under minimal boundary conditions, the scalar curvature to be a given function. In particular we give a precise location of blow up points and blow up rates. Such an analysis shows that the blow up picture of the Nirenberg problem on half spheres is far more complicated that in the case of closed spheres. Indeed besides the combination of interior and boundary blow ups, there are non simple blow up points for subcritical sol…
Three types of blow-up for a fourth-order degenerate reaction-diffusion equation are studied by a combination of analytic and numerical methods. At the critical values of parameters, there occurs a variational problem with a countable set of solutions obtained by Lysternik--Shnirelman category theory, which then are extended to neighbouring values of parameters by a homotopy-like approach.
We construct a finite-time blow-up solution for a class of strongly perturbed semilinear wave equation with an isolated characteristic point in one space dimension. Given any integer $k\ge 2$ and $ζ_0 \in \mathbb{R}$, we construct a blow-up solution with a characteristic point $a$, such that the asymptotic behavior of the solution near $(a,T(a))$ shows a decoupled sum of $k$ solitons with alternate signs, whose centers (in the hyperbolic geometry) have $ζ_0$ as a center of mass, for all times. Although the result is similar to the unperturbed case in its statement, our method is new. Indeed, o…
On $(M,g)$ a compact riemannian $4-$manifold we consider the prescribed $Q-$curvature equation defined on $M$ with finite singular sources. We first prove a classification theorem for singular Liouville equations defined on $\mathbb R^4$ and perform a concentration compactness analysis. Then we derive a quantization result for bubbling solutions and establish a priori estimate under the assumption that certain conformal invariant does not take some quantized values. Furthermore we prove a spherical Harnack inequality around singular sources provided their strength is not an integer. Such an in…
In this paper we study dynamical properties of blowup solutions to the focusing intercritical (mass-supercritical and energy-subcritical) nonlinear fourth-order Schrödinger equation. We firstly establish the profile decomposition of bounded sequences in $\dot{H}^{γ_{\text{c}}} \cap \dot{H}^2$. We also prove a compactness lemma and a variational characterization of ground states related to the equation. As a result, we obtain the $\dot{H}^{γ_{\text{c}}}$-concentration of blowup solutions with bounded $\dot{H}^{γ_{\text{c}}}$-norm and the limiting profile of blowup solutions with critical $\dot{…
We consider the fourth-order Schrödinger equation $$ i\partial_tu+Δ^2 u+μΔu+λ|u|^αu=0, $$ where $α>0,μ=\pm1$ or $0$ and $λ\in\mathbb{C}$. Firstly, we prove local well-posedness in $H^4\left(\R^N\right)$ in both $H^4$ subcritical and critical case: $α>0$, $(N-8)α\leq8$. Then, for any given compact set $K\subset\mathbb{R}^N$, we construct $H^4(\R^N)$ solutions that are defined on $(-T, 0)$ for some $T>0$, and blow up exactly on $K$ at $t=0$.
Five types of blow-up patterns that can occur for the 4th-order semilinear parabolic equation of reaction-diffusion type $$ u_t= -Δ^2 u + |u|^{p-1} u \quad {in} \quad \ren \times (0,T), p>1, \quad \lim_{t \to T^-}\sup_{x \in \ren} |u(x,t)|= +\iy, $$ are discussed. For the semilinear heat equation $u_t= Δu+ u^p$, various blow-up patterns were under scrutiny since 1980s, while the case of higher-order diffusion was studied much less, regardless a wide range of its application.
Making use of integral representations, we develop a unified approach to establish blow up profiles, compactness and existence of positive solutions of the conformally invariant equations $P_σ(v)= Kv^{\frac{n+2σ}{n-2σ}}$ on the standard unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^n$ for all $σ\in (0,n/2)$, where $P_σ$ is the intertwining operator of order $2σ$. Finding positive solutions of these equations is equivalent to seeking metrics in the conformal class of the standard metric on spheres with prescribed certain curvatures. When $σ=1$, it is the prescribing scalar curvature problem or the Nirenberg problem,…
We study the problem of prescribing the Paneitz curvature on higher dimensional spheres. Particular attention is paid to the blow-up points, i.e. the critical points at infinity of the corresponding variational problem. Using topological tools and a careful analysis of the gradient flow lines in the neighborhood of such critical points at infinity, we prove some existence results.
A degenerate fourth-order parabolic equation modeling condensation phenomena related to Bose-Einstein particles is analyzed. The model is a Fokker-Planck-type approximation of the Boltzmann-Nordheim equation, only keeping the leading order term. It maintains some of the main features of the kinetic model, namely mass and energy conservation and condensation at zero energy. The existence of local-in-time weak solutions satisfying a certain entropy inequality is proven. The main result asserts that if a weighted $L^1$ norm of the initial data is sufficiently large and the initial data satisfies …
This paper is devoted to the lifespan of solutions to a damped fourth-order wave equation with logarithmic nonlinearity $$u_{tt}+Δ^2u-Δu-ωΔu_t+α(t)u_t=|u|^{p-2}u\ln|u|.$$ Finite time blow-up criteria for solutions at both lower and high initial energy levels are established, and an upper bound for the blow-up time is given for each case. Moreover, by constructing a new auxiliary functional and making full use of the strong damping term, a lower bound for the blow-up time is also derived.
In this note we prove the instability by blow-up of the ground state solutions for a class of fourth order Schr\" odinger equations. This extends the first rigorous results on blowing-up solutions for the biharmonic NLS due to Boulenger and Lenzmann \cite{BoLe} and confirm numerical conjectures from \cite{BaFi, BaFiMa1, BaFiMa, FiIlPa}.
In this paper we prescribe a fourth order conformal invariant on the standard $n-$sphere, with $n\geq5$, and study the related fourth order elliptic equation. We first find some existence results in the perturbative case. After some blow up analysis we build a homotopy to pass from the perturbative case to the non-perturbative one under some flatness condition. Finally we state some existence results under the assumption of symmetry.
Blow-up in second and fourth order semi-linear parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) is considered in bounded regions of one, two and three spatial dimensions with uniform initial data. A phenomenon whereby singularities form at multiple points simultaneously is exhibited and explained by means of a singular perturbation theory. In the second order case we pre- dict that points furthest from the boundary are selected by the dynamics of the PDE for singularity. In the fourth order case, singularities can form simultaneously at multiple locations, even in one spatial dimension. In two …
We consider a partial differential equation that arises in the coarse-grained description of epitaxial growth processes. This is a parabolic equation whose evolution is governed by the competition between the determinant of the Hessian matrix of the solution and the biharmonic operator. This model might present a gradient flow structure depending on the boundary conditions. We first extend previous results on the existence of stationary solutions to this model for Dirichlet boundary conditions. For the evolution problem we prove local existence of solutions for arbitrary data and global existe…
Fourth-order semilinear parabolic equations of the Cahn--Hilliard-type (01) u_t + \D^2 u = \g u \pm \D (|u|^{p-1}u) in Ω\times \re_+, are considered in a smooth bounded domain $Ø\subset \ren$ with Navier-type boundary conditions on $\p Ø$, or $Ø= \ren$, where $p>1$ and $\g$ are given real parameters. The sign $``+"$ in the "diffusion term" on the right-hand side means the stable case, while $``-"$ reflects the unstable (blow-up) one, with the simplest, so called limit, canonical model for $\g=0$, (02) u_t + \D^2 u= \pm \D(|u|^{p-1}u) \inA. The following three main problems are studied: (i) for…
In this paper we compute the Leray Schauder degree for a fourth order elliptic boundary value problem with exponential nonlinearity and Navier boundary condition. This will be made by proving a Poincare'-Hopf type theorem. Moreover by using this result, together with some quantitative results about the formal set of barycenters, we are able to establish a direct and geometrically clear degree counting formula for our problem. We remark that this formula has been proven with complete different methods by Lin Wei and Wang by using blow-up type estimates.
We consider the following class of focusing $L^2$-supercritical fourth-order nonlinear Schrödinger equations \[ i\partial_t u - Δ^2 u + μΔu = - |u|^αu, \quad (t,x) \in \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}^N, \] where $N\geq 2$, $μ\geq 0$, and $\frac{8}{N}<α<α^*$ with $α^*:=\frac{8}{N-4}$ if $N\geq 5$ and $α^*=\infty$ if $N\leq 4$. By using the localized Morawetz estimates and radial Sobolev embedding, we establish the energy scattering below the ground state threshold for the equation with radially symmetric initial data. We also address the existence of finite time blow-up radial solutions to the equ…
We let $Ω$ be a smooth bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^4$ and a sequence of fonctions $(V_k)_{k\in\mathbb{N}}\in C^0(Ω)$ such that $\lim_{k\to +\infty}V_k=1$ in $C^0_{loc}(Ω)$. We consider a sequence of functions $(u_k)_{k\in\mathbb{N}}\in C^4(Ω)$ such that $$Δ^2 u_k=V_k e^{4u_k}$$ in $Ω$ for all $k\in\mathbb{N}$. We address in this paper the question of the asymptotic behaviour of the $(u_k)'s$ when $k\to +\infty$. The corresponding problem in dimension 2 was considered by Brézis-Merle and Li-Shafrir (among others), where a blow-up phenomenon was described and where a quantization of this blow-…
In this paper we develop a monotonicity formula for elliptic systems with Neumann boundary coupling, proving unique continuation and classification of blow-up profiles. As an application, we obtain strong unique continuation for some fourth order equations and higher order fractional problems.
We study compactness for nonnegative solutions of the fourth order constant $Q$-curvature equations on smooth compact Riemannian manifolds of dimension $\ge 5$. If the $Q$-curvature equals $-1$, we prove that all solutions are universally bounded. If the $Q$-curvature is $1$, assuming that Paneitz operator's kernel is trivial and its Green function is positive, we establish universal energy bounds on manifolds which are either locally conformally flat (LCF) or of dimension $\le 9$. Moreover, assuming in addition that a positive mass type theorem holds for the Paneitz operator, we prove compact…
In this paper, we are devoted to establishing the compactness and existence results of the solutions to the fractional Nirenberg problem for $n=3,$ $σ=1/2,$ when the prescribing $σ$-curvature function satisfies the $(n-2σ)$-flatness condition near its critical points. The compactness results are new and optimal. In addition, we obtain a degree-counting formula of all solutions. From our results, we can know where blow up occur. Moreover, for any finite distinct points, the sequence of solutions that blow up precisely at these points can be constructed. We extend the results of Li in \cite[CPAM…
We consider the problem of prescribing the Gaussian and the geodesic curvatures of a compact surface with boundary by a conformal deformation of the metric. We derive some existence results using a variational approach, either by minimization of the Euler-Lagrange energy or via min-max methods. One of the main tools in our approach is a blow-up analysis of solutions, which in the present setting can have diverging volume. To our knowledge, this is the first time in which such an aspect is treated. Key ingredients in our arguments are: a blow-up analysis around a sequence of points different fr…
We study qualitative properties for nonnegative solutions to a conformally invariant coupled system of fourth order equations involving critical exponents. For solutions defined in the punctured space, there exist essentially two cases to analyze. If the origin is a removable singularity, we prove that non-singular solutions are rotationally invariant and weakly positive. More precisely, they are the product of a fourth order spherical solution by a unit vector with nonnegative coordinates. If the origin is a non-removable singularity, we show that the solutions are radially symmetric and stro…
In this paper, we consider the focusing mass-critical nonlinear fourth-order Schrödinger equation. We prove that blowup solutions to this equation with initial data in $H^γ(\mathbb{R}^d), 5\leq d \leq 7, \frac{56-3d+\sqrt{137d^2+1712d+3136}}{2(2d+32)} <γ<2$ concentrate at least the mass of the ground state at the blowup time. This extends the work in \cite{ZhuYangZhang11} where Zhu-Yang-Zhang studied the formation of singularity for the equation with rough initial data in $\mathbb{R}^4$. We also prove that the equation is globally well-posed with initial data $u_0 \in H^γ(\mathbb{R}^d), 5\leq …
In this paper we study the problem of prescribing a fourth order conformal invariant (the Paneitz curvature) on the $n$-sphere, with $n\geq 5$. Using tools from the theory of critical points at infinity, we provide some topological conditions on the level sets of a given positive function under which we prove the existene of a metric, conformally equivalent to the standard metric, with prescribed Paneitz curvature.
We study the asymptotic behavior for singular solutions to a critical fourth order system generalizing the constant $Q$-curvature equation. Our main result extends to the case of strongly coupled systems, the celebrated asymptotic classification due to [L. A. Caffarelli, B. Gidas and J. Spruck, Comm. Pure Appl. Math. (1989)] and [N. Korevaar, R. Mazzeo, F. Pacard and R. Schoen, Invent. Math., (1999)]. On the technical level, we use an involved spectral analysis to study the Jacobi fields' growth properties in the kernel of the linearization of our system around a blow-up limit solution. Beside…
This is the first of two papers, in which we prove some properties of the Webster scalar curvature flow. More precisely, we establish the long-time existence, L^p convergence and the blow-up analysis for the solution of the flow. As a by-product, we prove the convergence of the CR Yamabe flow on the CR sphere. The results in this paper will be used to prove a result of prescribing Webster scalar curvature on the CR sphere, which is the main result of the second paper.
This paper deals with a class of initial-boundary value problems for nonlinear fourth order parabolic systems with time dependent coefficients in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N, N\geq 2$. Introducing suitable conditions on the source terms, we obtain a time interval $[0,T],$ where the solution remains bounded by deriving a lower bound $T$ of $t^*$. Moreover, we establish conditions on the shape of the spatial domain and on data sufficient to guarantee that the solution blows up in finite time $t^*$, deriving an upper bound for $t^*$.

The model is a Fokker-Planck-type approximation of the Boltzmann-Nordheim equation, only keeping the leading order term. It maintains some of the main features of the kinetic model, namely mass and energy conservation and condensation at zero energy. The proof is based on approximation arguments, i…
We prove some qualitative properties for singular solutions to a class of strongly coupled system involving a Gross--Pitaevskii-type nonlinearity. Our main theorems are vectorial fourth order counterparts of the classical results of [J. Serrin, Acta Math. (1964)], [P.-L. Lions, J. Differential Equations (1980)], [P. Aviles, Comm. Math. Phys. (1987)], and [B. Gidas and J. Spruck, Comm. Pure Appl. Math. (1981)]. On the technical level, we use the moving sphere method to classify the limit blow-up solutions to our system. Besides, applying asymptotic analysis techniques, we show that these soluti…
In this paper, we are concerned with Liouville-type theorems for the nonlinear elliptic equation {equation*} Δ^2 u=|x|^a |u|^{p-1}u\;\ {in}\;\ Ω, {equation*}where $a \ge 0$, $p>1$ and $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is an unbounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n \ge 5$. We prove Liouville-type theorems for solutions belonging to one of the following classes: stable solutions and finite Morse index solutions (whether positive or sign-changing). Our proof is based on a combination of the {\it Pohozaev-type identity}, {\it monotonicity formula} of solutions and a {\it blowing down} sequence, which is used …
In this paper, we study the global well-posedness and scattering theory for the defocusing fourth-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation (FNLS) $iu_t+Δ^2 u+|u|^pu=0$ in dimension $d\geq9$. We prove that if the solution $u$ is apriorily bounded in the critical Sobolev space, that is, $u\in L_t^\infty(I;\dot H^{s_c}_x(\R^d))$ with all $s_c:=\frac{d}2-\frac4p\geq1$ if $p$ is an even integer or $s_c\in[1,2+p)$ otherwise, then $u$ is global and scatters. The impetus to consider this problem stems from a series of recent works for the energy-supercritical and energy-subcritical nonlinear Schrödinger e…
For compact, isometrically embedded Riemannian manifolds $ N \hookrightarrow \mathbb{R}^L$, we introduce a fourth-order version of the wave map equation. By energy estimates, we prove an $\textit{a priori}$ estimate for smooth local solutions in the energy subcritical dimension $ n = 1,2$. The estimate excludes blow-up of a Sobolev norm in finite existence times. In particular, combining this with recent work of local well-posedness of the Cauchy problem, it follows that for smooth initial data with compact support, there exists a (smooth) unique global solution in dimension $n = 1,2$. We also…
We investigate the asymptotic behavior as $k \to +\infty$ of sequences $(u_k)_{k\in\mathbb{N}}\in C^4(Ω)$ of solutions of the equations $Δ^2 u_k=V_k e^{4u_k}$ on $Ω$, where $Ω$ is a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^4$ and $\lim_{k\to +\infty}V_k=1$ in $C^0_{loc}(Ω)$. The corresponding 2-dimensional problem was studied by Brézis-Merle and Li-Shafrir who pointed out that there is a quantization of the energy when blow-up occurs. As shown by Adimurthi, Struwe and the author, such a quantization does not hold in dimension four for the problem in its full generality. We prove here that under natural h…
We consider the fourth order problem $Δ^{2}u=λf(u)$ on a general bounded domain $Ω$ in $R^{n}$ with the Navier boundary condition $u=Δu=0$ on $\partial Ω$. Here, $λ$ is a positive parameter and $ f:[0,a_{f}) \rightarrow \Bbb{R}_{+} $ $ (0 < a_{f} \leqslant \infty)$ is a smooth, increasing, convex nonlinearity such that $ f(0) > 0 $ and which blows up at $ a_{f} $. Let $$0<τ_{-}:=\liminf_{t\rightarrow a_{f}} \frac{f(t)f"(t)}{f'(t)^{2}}\leq τ_{+}:=\limsup_{t\rightarrow a_{f}} \frac{f(t)f"(t)}{f'(t)^{2}}<2.$$ We show that if $u_{m}$ is a sequence of semistable solutions correspond to $λ_{m}$ sati…
High performance computations are presented for the Higgs Boson Equation in the de Sitter Space- time using explicit fourth order Runge-Kutta scheme on the temporal discretization and fourth order finite difference discretization in space. In addition to the fully three space dimensional equation its one space dimensional radial solutions are also examined. The numerical code for the three space di- mensional equation has been programmed in CUDA Fortran and was performed on NVIDIA Tesla K40c GPU Accelerator. The radial form of the equation was simulated in MATLAB. The numerical results demonst…
