In this paper we consider a doubly critical nonlinear elliptic problem with Neumann boundary conditions. The existence of blow-up solutions for this problem is related to the blow-up analysis of the classical geometric problem of prescribing negative scalar curvature $K=-1$ on a domain of $\R^n$ and mean curvature $H=D(n(n-1))^{-1/2}$, for some constant $D>1$, on its boundary, via a conformal change of the metric. Assuming that $n\geq6$ and $D>\sqrt{(n+1)/(n-1)}$, we establish the existence of a positive solution which concentrates around an elliptic boundary point which is a nondegenerate critical point of the original mean curvature.
In this article we study global existence and blow-up of solutions for a general class of nonlocal nonlinear wave equations with power-type nonlinearities, $u_{tt}-Lu_{xx}=B(- |u|^{p-1}u)_{xx}, ~(p>1)$, where the nonlocality enters through two pseudo-differential operators $L$ and $B$. We establish thresholds for global existence versus blow-up using the potential well method which relies essentially on the ideas suggested by Payne and Sattinger. Our results improve the global existence and blow-up results given in the literature for the present class of nonlocal nonlinear wave equations and c…
This study deals with the analysis of the Cauchy problem of a general class of nonlocal nonlinear equations modeling the bi-directional propagation of dispersive waves in various contexts. The nonlocal nature of the problem is reflected by two different elliptic pseudodifferential operators acting on linear and nonlinear functions of the dependent variable, respectively. The well-known doubly dispersive nonlinear wave equation that incorporates two types of dispersive effects originated from two different dispersion operators falls into the category studied here. The class of nonlocal nonlinea…
In this paper, we study existence of boundary blow-up solutions for elliptic equations involving regional fractional Laplacian. We also discuss the optimality of our results.
This paper is devoted to the study of cloaking via anomalous localized resonance (CALR) in the two and three dimensional quasistatic regimes. CALR associated with negative index materials was discovered by Milton and Nicorovicci in [21] and attracted a lot attention in the scientific community. Two key figures of this phenomenon are the localized resonance, i.e., the fields blow up in some regions and remain bounded in some others, and the connection between the localized resonance and the blow up of the power of the fields as the loss goes to 0. An important class of negative index materials …
The present paper concerns with the existence of blow-up solution for a class of elliptic system with convection term. Here, we prove a result involving sub and supersolution for a class of elliptic system whose nonlinearity can depend of the gradient of the solution. This result permits to study the existence of blow-up solution for a large class of systems.
We study a generalized Kirchhoff type equation with trapping potential. The existence and blow-up behavior of solutions with normalized L2-norm for this problem are discussed.
In this paper we develop a monotonicity formula for elliptic systems with Neumann boundary coupling, proving unique continuation and classification of blow-up profiles. As an application, we obtain strong unique continuation for some fourth order equations and higher order fractional problems.
We study boundary blow-up solutions of semilinear elliptic equations $Lu=u_+^p$ with $p>1$, or $Lu=e^{au}$ with $a>0$, where $L$ is a second order elliptic operator with measurable coefficients. Several uniqueness theorems and an existence theorem are obtained.
The theory of elliptic equations involving singular nonlinearities is well studied topic but the interaction of singular type nonlinearity with nonlocal nonlinearity in elliptic problems has not been investigated so far. In this article, we study the very singular and doubly nonlocal singular problem $(P_λ)$(See below). Firstly, we establish a very weak comparison principle and the optimal Sobolev regularity. Next using the critical point theory of non-smooth analysis and the geometry of the energy functional, we establish the global multiplicity of positive weak solutions.
We study a class of semilinear elliptic equations with constraints in higher dimension. It is known that several mathematical structures of the problem are closed to those of the Liouville equation in dimension two. In this paper, we establish a classification of entire solutions, the $\sup + \inf$ type inequality and the quantized blowup mechanism.
In this paper, we deal with existence, uniqueness and exact rate of boundary behavior of blow-up solutions for a class of logistic type quasilinear problem in a smooth bounded domain involving the $p$-Laplacian operator, where the nonlinearity can have a singular behavior. In the proof of the existence of solution, we have used the sub and super solution method in conjunction with variational techniques and comparison principles. Related to the rate on boundary and uniqueness, we combine a comparison principle proved in the present paper together with the our result of existence of solution.
We construct families of blowing-up solutions to elliptic systems on smooth bounded domains in the Euclidean space, which are variants of the critical Lane-Emden system and analogous to the Brezis-Nirenberg problem. We find a function which governs blowing-up points and rates, observing that it reflects the strong nonlinear characteristic of the system. By using it, we also prove that a single blowing-up solution exists in general domains, and construct examples of contractible domains where multiple blowing-up solutions are allowed to exist. We believe that a variety of new ideas and argument…
We study the stability of compactness of solutions for the Yamabe boundary problem on a compact Riemannian manifold with non umbilic boundary. We prove that the set of solutions of Yamabe boundary problem is a compact set when perturbing the mean curvature of the boundary from below and the scalar curvature with a function whose maximum is not too positive. In addition, we prove the counterpart of the stability result: there exists a blowing up sequence of solutions when we perturb the mean curvature from above or the mean curvature from below and the scalar curvature with a function with a la…
In this paper we deal with positive singular solutions to semilinear elliptic problems involving a first order term and a singular nonlinearity. Exploiting a fine adaptation of the well-known moving plane method of Alexandrov-Serrin and a careful choice of the cutoff functions, we deduce symmetry and monotonicity properties of the solutions.
The existence of weak solutions and upper bounds for the blow-up time for time-discrete parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel models for chemotaxis in the two-dimensional whole space are proved. For various time discretizations, including the implicit Euler, BDF, and Runge-Kutta methods, the same bounds for the blow-up time as in the continuous case are derived by discrete versions of the virial argument. The theoretical results are illustrated by numerical simulations using an upwind finite-element method combined with second-order time discretizations.
Given a compact Riemannian manifold with umbilic boundary, the Yamabe boundary problem studies if there exist conformal scalar-flat metrics such that the boundary has constant mean curvature. In this paper we address to the stability of this problem with respect of perturbation of mean curvature of the boundary and scalar curvature of the manifold. In particular we prove that the Yamabe boundary problem is stable under perturbation of the mean curvature and the scalar curvature from below, while it is not stable if one of the two curvatures is perturbed from above.
In this paper, we provide a complete blow-up picture for solution sequences to an elliptic sinh-Poisson equation with variable intensities arising in the context of the statistical mechanics description of two-dimensional turbulence, as initiated by Onsager. The vortex intensities are described in terms of a probability measure defined on the interval. Under Dirichlet boundary conditions we establish the exclusion of boundary blowup points, we show that the concentration mass does not have residual L1-terms and we determine the location of blowup points in terms of Kirchhoff's Hamiltonian. We …
We show how the solutions to a $2\times2$ linear system involving Schr{ö}dinger operators blow up as the parameter $μ$ tends to some critical value which is the principal eigenvalue of the system; here the potential is continuous positive with superquadratic growth and the square matrix of the system is with constant coefficients and may have a double eigenvalue.
This paper is concerned with the attraction-repulsion chemotaxis system with superlinear logistic degradation, \begin{align*} \begin{cases} u_t = Δu - χ\nabla\cdot(u \nabla v) + ξ\nabla\cdot (u \nabla w) + λu - μu^k, \quad &x \in Ω,\ t>0,\\[1.05mm] 0= Δv + αu - βv, \quad &x \in Ω,\ t>0,\\[1.05mm] 0= Δw + γu - δw, \quad &x \in Ω,\ t>0, \end{cases} \end{align*} under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions, in a ball $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ ($n \ge 3$), with constant parameters $λ\in \mathbb{R}$, $k>1$, $μ, χ, ξ, α, β, γ, δ>0$. Blow-up phenomena in the system have been well investigated in the c…
We prove sharp pointwise blow-up estimates for finite-energy sign-changing solutions of critical equations of Schrödinger-Yamabe type on a closed Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ of dimension $n \ge 3$. This is a generalisation of the so-called $C^0$-theory for positive solutions of Schrödinger-Yamabe type equations. To deal with the sign-changing case we develop a method of proof that combines an \emph{a priori} bubble-tree analysis with a finite-dimensional reduction, and reduces the proof to obtaining sharp \emph{a priori} blow-up estimates for a linear problem.
This work is devoted to the study of the existence of solutions to nonlocal equations involving the fractional Laplacian. These equations have a variational structure and we find a nontrivial solution for them using the Mountain Pass Theorem. To make the nonlinear methods work, some careful analysis of the fractional spaces involved is necessary. In addition, we require rather general assumptions on the local operator. As far as we know, this result is new and represent a fractional version of a classical theorem obtained working with Laplacian equations.
This paper presents a variational approach to doubly-nonlinear (gradient) flows (P) of nonconvex energies along with nonpotential perturbations (i.e., perturbation terms without any potential structures). An elliptic-in-time regularization of the original equation ${\rm (P)}_\varepsilon$ is introduced, and then, a variational approach and a fixed-point argument are employed to prove existence of strong solutions to regularized equations. More precisely, we introduce a functional (defined for each entire trajectory and including a small approximation parameter $\varepsilon$) whose Euler-Lagrang…
Let $f$ be a continuous and non-decreasing function such that $f>0$ on $(0,\infty)$, $f(0)=0$, $\sup \_{s\geq 1}f(s)/s< \infty$ and let $p$ be a non-negative continuous function. We study the existence and nonexistence of explosive solutions to the equation $Δu+|\nabla u|=p(x)f(u)$ in $Ω,$ where $Ω$ is either a smooth bounded domain or $Ω=\RR^N$. If $Ω$ is bounded we prove that the above problem has never a blow-up boundary solution. Since $f$ does not satisfy the Keller-Osserman growth condition at infinity, we supply in the case $Ω=\RR^N$ a necessary and sufficient condition for the existenc…
We investigate the possible blow-up of strong solutions to a biological network formation model originally introduced by D. Cai and D. Hu \cite{HC}. The model is represented by an initial boundary value problem for an elliptic-parabolic system with cubic non linearity. We obtain an algebraic equation for the possible blow-up time of strong solutions. The equation yields information on how various given data may contribute to the blow-up of solutions. As a by-product of our development, we establish a $W^{1,q}$ estimate for solutions to an elliptic equation which shows the explicit dependence o…
We consider a parabolic-elliptic chemotaxis system generalizing \[ \begin{cases}\begin{split} & u_t=\nabla\cdot((u+1)^{m-1}\nabla u)-\nabla \cdot(u(u+1)^{σ-1}\nabla v)\\ & 0 = Δv - v + u \end{split}\end{cases} \] in bounded smooth domains $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$, $N\ge 3$, and with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. We show that *) solutions are global and bounded if $σ<m-\frac{N-2}N$ *) solutions are global if $σ\le 0$ *) close to given radially symmetric functions there are many initial data producing unbounded solutions if $σ>m-\frac{N-2}N$. In particular, if $σ\le 0$ and $σ> m-\frac{…
In this article, we are interested in the Einstein vacuum equations on a Lorentzian manifold displaying $\mathbb{U}(1)$ symmetry. We identify some freely prescribable initial data, solve the constraint equations and prove the existence of a unique and local in time solution at the $H^3$ level. In addition, we prove a blow-up criterium at the $H^2$ level. Our main objective is to provide a framework adapted to the study of high-frequency solutions to the Einstein vacuum equations done in a forthcoming paper by Huneau and Luk. As a consequence we work in an elliptic gauge, particularly adapted t…
In this survey we report on some recent results related to various singular phenomena arising in the study of some classes of nonlinear elliptic equations. We establish qualitative results on the existence, nonexistence or the uniqueness of solutions and we focus on the following types of problems: (i) blow-up boundary solutions of logistic equations; (ii) Lane-Emden-Fowler equations with singular nonlinearities and subquadratic convection term. We study the combined effects of various terms involved in these problems: sublinear or superlinear nonlinearities, singular nonlinear terms, convecti…
This paper deals with the quasilinear attraction-repulsion chemotaxis system \begin{align*} \begin{cases} u_t=\nabla\cdot \big((u+1)^{m-1}\nabla u -χu(u+1)^{p-2}\nabla v +ξu(u+1)^{q-2}\nabla w\big) +f(u), \\[1.05mm] 0=Δv+αu-βv, \\[1.05mm] 0=Δw+γu-δw \end{cases} \end{align*} in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ ($n \in \mathbb{N}$) with smooth boundary $\partialΩ$, where $m, p, q \in \mathbb{R}$, $χ, ξ, α, β, γ, δ>0$ are constants. Moreover, it is supposed that the function $f$ satisfies $f(u)\equiv0$ in the study of boundedness, whereas, when considering blow-up, it is assumed that $m>0…
We consider the elliptic-elliptic Davey-Stewartson system in the three-dimensional Euclidean space, and we give sufficient conditions for the existence of finite time blow-up solutions in non-isotropic spaces. The proof is based on some general results on distributions defined via homogeneous symbols, in conjunction with a convexity argument.
We establish the uniqueness of the positive solution for equations of the form $-Δu=au-b(x)f(u)$ in $Ω$, $u|\_{\partialΩ}=\infty$. The special feature is to consider nonlinearities $f$ whose variation at infinity is \emph{not regular} (e.g., $\exp(u)-1$, $\sinh(u)$, $\cosh(u)-1$, $\exp(u)\log(u+1)$, $u^β\exp(u^γ)$, $β\in {\mathbb R}$, $γ>0$ or $\exp(\exp(u))-e$) and functions $b\geq 0$ in $Ω$ vanishing on $\partialΩ$. The main innovation consists of using Karamata's theory not only in the statement/proof of the main result but also to link the non-regular variation of $f$ at infinity with the …
We consider a Parabolic-Elliptic system of PDE's with a chemotactic term in a $N$-dimensional unit ball describing the behavior of the density of a biological species "$u$" and a chemical stimulus "$v$". The system includes a nonlinear chemotactic coefficient depending of ``$\nabla v$", i.e. the chemotactic term is given in the form $$- div (χu |\nabla v|^{p-2} \nabla v), \qquad \mbox{ for } \ p \in ( \frac{N}{N-1},2), \qquad N >2 $$ for a positive constant $χ$ when $v$ satisfies the poisson equation $$- Δv = u - \frac{1}{|Ω|} \int_Ω u_0dx.$$ We study the radially symmetric solutions under the…
For a competition-diffusion blow-up system involving the fractional Laplacian of the form \begin{equation*}\label{syst1} -(-Δ)^su=uv^2,\quad-(-Δ)^sv=vu^2,\quad u,v>0 \ \mathrm{in} \ \mathbb{R}^N, \end{equation*} whith $s\in(0,1)$, we prove that the maximal asymptotic growth rate for its entire solutions is $2s$. Moreover, since we are able to construct symmetric solutions to the problem, when $N=2$ with prescribed growth arbitrarily close to the critical one, we can conclude that the asymptotic bound found is optimal. Finally, we prove existence of genuinely higher dimensional solutions, when …
We prove existence and nonexistence results concerning elliptic problems whose basic model is \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} \displaystyle-Δu+μ(x)\frac{|\nabla u|^2}{(u+δ)^γ}= λu^p, &x\in Ω, \\ u> 0, &x\in Ω, \\ u=0, &x\in\partialΩ, \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N (N\geq 3)$ is a bounded smooth domain, $λ>0$, $p>1$, $δ\geq 0$, $γ>0$ and $μ\in L^\infty(Ω)$. The main achievement resides in handling a possibly singular ($δ=0$) first order term having a nonconstant coefficient $μ$ in the presence of a superlinear zero order term. Our approach for the existence results is b…
This paper deals with the quasilinear parabolic-elliptic chemotaxis system with logistic source and nonlinear production, \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} u_t=\nabla \cdot (D(u) \nabla u) - \nabla \cdot (S(u)\nabla v) + λu - μu^κ, & x\inΩ,\ t>0, \\[1mm] 0=Δv - \overline{M_f}(t) + f(u), & x\inΩ,\ t>0, \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $λ>0$, $μ>0$, $κ>1$ and $\overline{M_f}(t):=\frac{1}{|Ω|}\int_Ω f(u(x,t))\,dx$, and $D$, $S$ and $f$ are functions generalizing the prototypes \begin{align*} D(u)=(u+1)^{m-1},\quad S(u)=u(u+1)^{α-1}\quad\mbox{and}\quad f(u)=u^\ell \end{align*} with $m\in\mathbb{R}$…
Semilinear elliptic equations which give rise to solutions blowing up at the boundary are perturbed by a Hardy potential. The size of this potential effects the existence of a certain type of solutions (large solutions): if the potential is too small, then no large solution exists. The presence of the Hardy potential requires a new definition of large solutions, following the pattern of the associated linear problem. Nonexistence and existence results for different types of solutions will be given. Our considerations are based on a Phragmen-Lindelof type theorem which enables us to classify th…
This paper deals with the quasilinear parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel system with logistic source, \begin{align*} u_t=Δ(u+1)^m - χ\nabla \cdot (u(u+1)^{α- 1} \nabla v) + λ(|x|) u - μ(|x|) u^κ, \quad 0=Δv - v + u, \quad x\inΩ,\ t>0, \end{align*} where $Ω:=B_{R}(0)\subset\mathbb{R}^n\ (n\ge3)$ is a ball with some $R>0$; $m>0$, $χ>0$, $α>0$ and $κ\ge1$; $λ$ and $μ$ are spatially radial nonnegative functions. About this problem, Winkler (Z. Angew. Math. Phys.; 2018; 69; Art. 69, 40) found the condition for $κ$ such that solutions blow up in finite time when $m=α=1$. In the case that $m=1$ and $α\i…
We consider the parabolic-elliptic Patlak-Keller-Segel (PKS) model of chemotactic aggregation in two space dimensions which describes the aggregation of bacteria under chemo-taxis. When the mass is equal to $8π$ and the second moment is finite (the doubly critical case), we give a precise description of the dynamic as time goes to infinity and extract the limiting profile and speed. The proof shows that this dynamic is stable under perturbations.
Given a closed manifold $(M^n,g)$, $n\geq 3$, Olivier Druet proved that a necessary condition for the existence of energy-bounded blowing-up solutions to perturbations of the equation $$Δ_gu+h_0u=u^{\frac{n+2}{n-2}},\ u>0\hbox{ in }M$$ is that $h_0\in C^1(M)$ touches the Scalar curvature somewhere when $n\geq 4$ (the condition is different for $n=6$). In this paper, we prove that Druet's condition is also sufficient provided we add its natural differentiable version. For $n\geq 6$, our arguments are local. For the low dimensions $n\in\{4,5\}$, our proof requires the introduction of a suitable …
This paper is principally devoted to revisit the remarkable works of Keller and Osserman and generalize some previous results related to the those for the class of quasilinear elliptic problem $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{l} {\rm{div}} \left( ϕ(|\nabla u|)\nabla u\right) = a(x)f(u)\quad \mbox{in } Ω,\\ u\geq0\ \ \mbox{in}\ Ω,\ \ u=\infty\ \mbox{on}\ \partialΩ, \end{array} \right. $$ where either $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ with $N \geq 1$ is a smooth bounded domain or $Ω= \mathbb{R}^N$. We prove the existence of multiple positive radial solutions to the sign-indefinite elliptic boundary blow-up problem \[ \left\{\begin{array}{ll} Δu + \bigl(a^+(\vert x \vert) - μa^-(\vert x \vert)\bigr) g(u) = 0, & \; \vert x \vert < 1, \\ u(x) \to \infty, & \; \vert x \vert \to 1, \end{array} \right. \] where $g$ is a function superlinear at zero and at infinity, $a^+$ and $a^-$ are the positive/negative part, respectively, of a sign-changing function $a$ and $μ> 0$ is a large parameter. In particular, we show how the number of solutions is affected by the nodal behavior of the weight functi…

If the case that $m=1$ and $χ(s)=χ_0s^{-k}$, Na…
In this paper we prove existence results and asymptotic behavior for strong solutions $u\in W^{2,2}_{\textrm{loc}}(Ω)$ of the nonlinear elliptic problem \begin{equation} \tag{P} \label{abstr} \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} -Δ_{H}u+H(\nabla u)^{q}+λu=f&\text{in }Ω,\\ u\rightarrow +\infty &\text{on }\partialΩ, \end{array} \right. \end{equation} where $H$ is a suitable norm of $\mathbb R^{n}$, $Ω$ is a bounded domain, $Δ_{H}$ is the Finsler Laplacian, $1<q\le 2$, $λ>0$ and $f$ is a suitable function in $L^{\infty}_{\textrm{loc}}$. Furthermore, we are interested in the behavior of the solutions when $λ…
In this paper we study positive solutions to problem involving the fractional Laplacian $(E)$ $(-Δ)^α u(x)+|u|^{p-1}u(x)=0 in x\inΩ\setminus\mathcal{C}$, subject to the conditions $u(x)=0$ $x\inΩ^c$ and $\lim_{x\inΩ\setminus\mathcal{C}, x\to\mathcal{C}}u(x)=+\infty$, where $p>1$ and $Ω$ is an open bounded $C^2$ domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $\mathcal{C}\subset Ω$ is a compact $C^2$ manifold with $N-1$ multiples dimensions and without boundary, the operator $(-Δ)^α$ with $α\in(0,1)$ is the fractional Laplacian. We consider the existence of positive solutions for problem $(E)$. Moreover, we further …
In this paper second-order elliptic and parabolic partial differential systems are considered on $C^1$ domains. Existence and uniqueness results are obtained in terms of Sobolev spaces with weights so that we allow the derivatives of the solutions to blow up near the boundary. The coefficients of the systems are allowed to substantially oscillate or blow up near the boundary.
We study the Cauchy problem for the half Ginzburg-Landau-Kuramoto (hGLK) equation with the second order elliptic operator having rough coefficients and potential type perturbation. The blow-up of solutions for hGLK equation with non-positive nonlinearity is shown by an ODE argument. The key tools in the proof are appropriate commutator estimates and the essential self-adjointness of the symmetric uniformly elliptic operator with rough metric and potential type perturbation.
We study the possible blow-up behavior of solutions to the slightly subcritical elliptic problem with Hardy term \[ \left\{ \begin{aligned} -Δu-μ\frac{u}{|x|^2} &= |u|^{2^{\ast}-2-\varepsilon}u &&\quad \text{in } Ω, \\\ u &= 0&&\quad \text{on } \partialΩ, \end{aligned} \right. \] in a bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N (N\ge7)$ with $0\inΩ$, as $μ,\varepsilon\to 0^+$. In \cite{BarGuo-ANS}, we obtained the existence of nodal solutions that blow up positively at the origin and negatively at a different point as $μ=O(ε^α)$ with $α>\frac{N-4}{N-2}$, $\varepsilon\to 0^+$. Here we prove the existe…
This paper is devoted to the analysis of the classical Keller-Segel system over $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\geq 3$. We describe as much as possible the dynamics of the system characterized by various criteria, both in the parabolic-elliptic case and in the fully parabolic case. The main results when dealing with the parabolic-elliptic case are: local existence without smallness assumption on the initial density, global existence under an improved smallness condition and comparison of blow-up criteria. A new concentration phenomenon criteria for the fully parabolic case is also given. The analysis is co…
This paper deals with unbounded solutions to the following zero--flux chemotaxis system \begin{equation}\label{ProblemAbstract} \tag{$\Diamond$} \begin{cases} % about u u_t=\nabla \cdot [(u+α)^{m_1-1} \nabla u-χu(u+α)^{m_2-2} \nabla v] & (x,t) \in Ω\times (0,T_{max}), \\[1mm] % about v 0=Δv-M+u & (x,t) \in Ω\times (0,T_{max}), \end{cases} \end{equation} where $α>0$, $Ω$ is a smooth and bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$, with $n\geq 1$, $t\in (0, T_{max})$, where $T_{max}$ the blow-up time, and $m_1,m_2$ real numbers.
