We construct families of blowing-up solutions to elliptic systems on smooth bounded domains in the Euclidean space, which are variants of the critical Lane-Emden system and analogous to the Brezis-Nirenberg problem. We find a function which governs blowing-up points and rates, observing that it reflects the strong nonlinear characteristic of the system. By using it, we also prove that a single blowing-up solution exists in general domains, and construct examples of contractible domains where multiple blowing-up solutions are allowed to exist. We believe that a variety of new ideas and arguments developed here will help to analyze blowing-up phenomena in related Hamiltonian-type systems.
In this paper, we deal with the following quasilinear elliptic system involving gradient terms in the form: \begin{center} $\begin{cases} Δ_p u= v^m| \nabla u |^α& \text{in}\quad Ω\\ Δ_p v= v^β| \nabla u |^q & \text{in}\quad Ω, \end{cases}$ \end{center} where $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N(N\geq 2)$ is either equal to $ \mathbb{R}^N $ or equal to a ball $B_R$ centered at the origin and having radius $R>0$, $1<p<\infty$, $m,q>0$, $α\geq 0$, $0\leq β\leq m$ and $δ:=(p-1-α)(p-1-β)-qm \neq 0$. Our aim is to establish the asymptotics of the blowing-up radial solutions to the above system. Precisely, we prov…
Given a closed manifold $(M^n,g)$, $n\geq 3$, Olivier Druet proved that a necessary condition for the existence of energy-bounded blowing-up solutions to perturbations of the equation $$Δ_gu+h_0u=u^{\frac{n+2}{n-2}},\ u>0\hbox{ in }M$$ is that $h_0\in C^1(M)$ touches the Scalar curvature somewhere when $n\geq 4$ (the condition is different for $n=6$). In this paper, we prove that Druet's condition is also sufficient provided we add its natural differentiable version. For $n\geq 6$, our arguments are local. For the low dimensions $n\in\{4,5\}$, our proof requires the introduction of a suitable …
We prove sharp pointwise blow-up estimates for finite-energy sign-changing solutions of critical equations of Schrödinger-Yamabe type on a closed Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ of dimension $n \ge 3$. This is a generalisation of the so-called $C^0$-theory for positive solutions of Schrödinger-Yamabe type equations. To deal with the sign-changing case we develop a method of proof that combines an \emph{a priori} bubble-tree analysis with a finite-dimensional reduction, and reduces the proof to obtaining sharp \emph{a priori} blow-up estimates for a linear problem.
We consider the simplest parabolic-elliptic model of chemotaxis in the whole space in several dimensions. Criteria for the blowup of radially symmetric solutions in terms of suitable Morrey spaces norms are derived.
In this paper, we aim to introduce the method of scaling spheres (MSS) as a unified approach to Liouville theorems on general domains in $\mathbb R^n$, and apply it to establish Liouville theorems on arbitrary unbounded or bounded MSS applicable domains for general ($\leq n$-th order) PDEs and integral equations without translation invariance or with singularities. The set of MSS applicable domains includes any unbounded or bounded generalized radially convex domains and any complementary sets of their closures, which is invariant under Kelvin transforms and is the maximal collection of simply…
Let $(M,g)$ and $(K,κ)$ be two Riemannian manifolds of dimensions $m$ and $k ,$ respectively. Let $ω\in C^2(N),$ $ω> 0.$ The warped product $ M\times _ωK$ is the $ (m+k)$-dimensional product manifold $M\times K$ furnished with metric $ g+ω^2 κ.$ We prove that the supercritical problem $$-Δ_{g+ω^2 κ}u+h u=u^{ {m+2\over m-2} \pm\varepsilon},\ u>0,\ \hbox{in}\ (M\times _ωK,g+ω^2 κ)$$ has a solution which concentrate along a $k$-dimensional minimal submanifold $Γ$ of $M\times _ωN$ as the real parameter $\varepsilon$ goes to zero, provided the function $h$ and the sectional curvatures along $Γ$ sat…
For a specific choice of the diffusion, the parabolic-elliptic Patlak-Keller-Segel system with non-linear diffusion (also referred to as the quasi-linear Smoluchowski-Poisson equation) exhibits an interesting threshold phenomenon: there is a critical mass $M_c>0$ such that all the solutions with initial data of mass smaller or equal to $M_c$ exist globally while the solution blows up in finite time for a large class of initial data with mass greater than $M_c$. Unlike in space dimension 2, finite mass self-similar blowing-up solutions are shown to exist in space dimension $d?3$.
We consider the nonlocal Liouville type equation $$ (-Δ)^{\frac{1}{2}} u = \varepsilon κ(x) e^u, \quad u > 0, \quad \mbox{in } I, \qquad u = 0, \quad \mbox{in } \mathbb{R} \setminus I, $$ where $I$ is a union of $d \geq 2$ disjoint bounded intervals, $κ$ is a smooth bounded function with positive infimum and $\varepsilon > 0$ is a small parameter. For any integer $1 \leq m \leq d$, we construct a family of solutions $(u_\varepsilon)_{\varepsilon}$ which blow up at $m$ interior distinct points of $I$ and for which $\varepsilon \int_I κe^{u_\varepsilon} \, \rightarrow 2 m π$, as $\varepsilon \to…

The blow-up in finite time for the solutions to the initial-boundary value problem associated to the multi-dimensional quantum hydrodynamic model in a bounded domain is proved. The model consists on conservation of mass equation and a momentum balance equation equivalent to a compressible Euler equations corrected by a dispersion term of the third order in the momentum balance. The proof is based on a-priori estimates for the energy functional for a new observable constructed with an auxiliary function, and it is shown that, under suitable boundary conditions and assumptions on the initial dat…
Considering initial data in $\dot{H}^s$, with $\frac{1}{2} \textless{} s \textless{} \frac{3}{2}$, this paper is devoted to the study of possible blowing-up Navier-Stokes solutions such that $(T*(u\_{0}) -t)^{\frac{1}{2} (s- \frac{1}{2})} \,\, \| u \|\_{\dot{H}^s}}$ is bounded. Our result is in the spirit of the tremendous works of L. Escauriaza, G. Seregin, and V. $\breve{\mathrm{S}}$ver$\acute{\mathrm{a}}$k and I. Gallagher, G. Koch, F. Planchon, where they proved there is no blowing-up solution which remain bounded in $L^3(R^3)$. The main idea is that if such blowing-up solutions exist, the…
We construct blowing-up sign-changing solutions to some nonlinear critical equations by glueing a standard bubble to a degenerate function. We develop a method based on analyticity to perform the glueing when the critical manifold of solutions is degenerate and no Bianchi--Egnell type condition holds.
Given $p$ points in a bounded domain of $\R^d$, with $d=2,3$, we show the existence of solutions of the $L^2$-critical focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation blowing up exactly in these points.
We consider the Brezis-Nirenberg problem: $$-Δu =λu + |u|^{p-1}u\qquad \mbox{in}\,\, Ω,\quad u=0\,\, \mbox{on}\,\,\ \partialΩ,$$ where $Ω$ is a smooth bounded domain in $\mathbb R^N$, $N\geq 3$, $p=\frac{N+2}{N-2}$ and $λ>0$. In this paper we prove that, if $Ω$ is symmetric and $N=4,5$, there exists a sign-changing solution whose positive part concentrates and blows-up at the center of symmetry of the domain, while the negative part vanishes, as $λ\rightarrow λ_1$, where $λ_1=λ_1(Ω)$ denotes the first eigenvalue of $-Δ$ on $Ω$, with zero Dirichlet boundary condition.
In this paper, we describe the asymptotic behaviour of globally defined solutions and of bounded solutions blowing up in finite time of the radial energy-critical focusing non-linear wave equation in three space dimension.
Let $Ω$ be a smooth bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and denote the regular part of the Green's function on $Ω$ with Dirichlet boundary condition as $H(x,y)$. Assume that $q \in Ω$ and $n\geq 5$. We prove that there exists an integer $k_0$ such that for any integer $k\geq k_0$ there exist initial data $u_0$ and smooth parameter functions $ξ(t)\to q$, $0<μ(t)\to 0$ as $t\to +\infty$ such that the solution $u_q$ of the critical nonlinear heat equation \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} u_t = Δu + |u|^{\frac{4}{n-2}}u\text{ in } Ω\times (0, \infty),\\ u = 0\text{ on } \partial Ω\times (0, \infty),\\…
Semilinear elliptic equations which give rise to solutions blowing up at the boundary are perturbed by a Hardy potential. The size of this potential effects the existence of a certain type of solutions (large solutions): if the potential is too small, then no large solution exists. The presence of the Hardy potential requires a new definition of large solutions, following the pattern of the associated linear problem. Nonexistence and existence results for different types of solutions will be given. Our considerations are based on a Phragmen-Lindelof type theorem which enables us to classify th…
Consider the problem \begin{eqnarray*} -Δu_\e &=& v_\e^p \quad v_\e>0\quad {in}\quad Ω, -Δv_\e &=& u_\e^{q_\e}\quad u_\e>0\quad {in}\quad Ω, u_\e&=&v_\e\:\:=\:\:0 \quad {on}\quad \partial Ω, \end{eqnarray*} where $Ω$ is a bounded convex domain in $\R^N,$ $N>2,$ with smooth boundary $\partial Ω.$ Here $p,q_\e>0,$ and \begin{equation*} ε:=\frac{N}{p+1}+\frac{N}{q_\e+1}-(N-2). \end{equation*} This problem has positive solutions for $\e>0$ (with $pq_\e>1$) and no non-trivial solution for $\e\leq 0.$ We study the asymptotic behaviour of \emph{least energy} solutions as $\e\to 0^+.$ These solutions …
We are concerned with the existence of blowing-up solutions to the following boundary value problem $$-Δu= \la a(x) e^u-4πN δ_0\;\hbox{ in } Ω,\quad u=0 \;\hbox{ on }\partial Ω,$$ where $Ω$ is a smooth and bounded domain in $\R^2$ such that $0\inΩ$, $a(x)$ is a positive smooth function, $N$ is a positive integer and $\la>0$ is a small parameter. Here $δ_0$ defines the Dirac measure with pole at $0$. We find conditions on the function $a$ and on the domain $Ω$ under which there exists a solution $u_\la$ blowing up at $0$ and satisfying $\la\into a(x)e^{u_\la} \to 8π(N+1)$ as $\la\to 0^+$.
In the present paper, we investigate the regularity and symmetry properties of weak solutions to semilinear elliptic equations which are locally stable.
Gradient boundedness up to the boundary for solutions to Dirichlet and Neumann problems for elliptic systems with Uhlenbeck type structure is established. Nonlinearities of possibly non-polynomial type are allowed, and minimal regularity on the data and on the boundary of the domain is assumed. The case of arbitrary bounded convex domains is also included.
Under appropriate assumptions, we show that all bounded entire solutions to a class of semilinear elliptic systems are confined in a convex domain. Moreover, we prove a Liouville type theorem in the case where the domain is strictly convex. Our result represents an extension, under less regularity assumptions, of a recent result of Smyrnelis. We also provide several applications.
Global existence and boundedness of classical solutions are shown for a parabolic-elliptic chemotaxis system with local sensing when the motility function is assumed to be unbounded at infinity. The cornerstone of the proof is the derivation of $L^\infty$-estimates on the second component of the system and is achieved by various comparison arguments.
We prove a Liouville type result for bounded, entire solutions to a class of variational semilinear elliptic systems, based on the growth of their potential energy over balls with growing radius. Important special cases to which our result applies are the Ginzburg-Landau system and systems that arise in the study of multi-phase transitions.
We study radial solutions in a ball of $\mathbb{R}^N$ of a semilinear, parabolic-elliptic Patlak-Keller-Segel system with a nonlinear sensitivity involving a critical power. For $N = 2$, the latter reduces to the classical linear model, well-known for its critical mass $8π$. We show that a critical mass phenomenon also occurs for $N \geq 3$, but with a strongly different qualitative behaviour. More precisely, if the total mass of cells is smaller or equal to the critical mass M, then the cell density converges to a regular steady state with support strictly inside the ball as time goes to infi…
The paper is devoted to the study of asymptotic behavior of solutions for nonlocal elliptic problems in weighted spaces. We deal with the most difficult case where the support of nonlocal terms intersects with the boundary of a plane bounded domain. In this situation, a general form of the asymptotics is investigated and coefficients in the asymptotics are calculated.
In this thesis, a unified approach to prove the boundedness of gradients of solutions to degenerate and singular elliptic and parabolic phi-Laplacian systems is presented. At first, a Cacciopoli-type energy inequality with an additional function f which can be chosen freely is proven. Then, Di Giorgi's method is applied using level sets which will lead to L-infinity-estimates on the gradient of the weak solution.
We consider the Dirichlet problem on general, possibly nonsmooth bounded domain, for elliptic linear equation with uniformly elliptic divergence form operator. We investigate carefully the relationship between weak, soft and the Perron-Wiener-Brelot solutions of the problem. To this end, we extend the usual notion of the trace operator to Sobolev space $H^1(D)$ with $D$ being an arbitrary bounded open subset of $\mathbb{R}^d$. In the second part of the paper, we prove some existence results for the Dirichlet problem for semilinear equations with measure data on the right-hand side and $L^1$-da…
Let $L $ be a second order elliptic operator with smooth coefficients defined on a domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ (possibly unbounded), $d\geq 3$. We study nonnegative continuous solutions $u$ to the equation $L u(x) - φ(x, u(x))=0$ on $Ω$, where $φ$ is in the Kato class with respect to the first variable and it grows sublinearly with respect to the second variable. Under fairly general assumptions we prove that if there is a bounded non zero solution then there is no large solution.
We study a nonlocal diffusion operator in a bounded smooth domain prescribing the flux through the boundary. This problem may be seen as a generalization of the usual Neumann problem for the heat equation. First, we prove existence, uniqueness and a comparison principle. Next, we study the behavior of solutions for some prescribed boundary data including blowing up ones. Finally, we look at a nonlinear flux boundary condition.
In this paper, we study fully nonlinear second-order elliptic and parabolic equations with Neumann boundary conditions on compact Riemannian manifolds with smooth boundary. We derive oscillation bounds for admissible solutions with Neumann boundary condition $u_ν= ϕ(x)$ assuming the existence of suitable $\mathcal{C}$-subsolutions. We use a parabolic approach to derive a solution of a $k$-Hessian equation with Neumann boundary condition $u_ν= ϕ(x)$ under suitable assumptions.
We examine $L^p$-viscosity solutions to fully nonlinear elliptic equations with bounded-measurable ingredients. By considering $p_0<p<d$, we focus on gradient-regularity estimates stemming from nonlinear potentials. We find conditions for local Lipschitz-continuity of the solutions and continuity of the gradient. We briefly survey recent breakthroughs in regularity theory arising from (nonlinear) potential estimates. Our findings follow from -- and are inspired by -- fundamental facts in the theory of $L^p$-viscosity solutions, and results in the work of Panagiota Daskalopoulos, Tuomo Kuusi an…
The present paper establishes a certain duality between the Dirichlet and Regularity problems for elliptic operators with $t$-independent complex bounded measurable coefficients ($t$ being the transversal direction to the boundary). To be precise, we show that the Dirichlet boundary value problem is solvable in $L^{p'}$, subject to the square function and non-tangential maximal function estimates, if and only if the corresponding Regularity problem is solvable in $L^p$. Moreover, the solutions admit layer potential representations. In particular, we prove that for any elliptic operator with $t…
We consider the existence of positive solutions to weighted quasilinear elliptic differential equations of the type \[ \begin{cases} - Δ_{p, w} u = σu^{q} & \text{in $Ω$}, \\ u = 0 & \text{on $\partial Ω$} \end{cases} \] in the sub-natural growth case $0 < q < p - 1$, where $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$, $Δ_{p, w}$ is a weighted $p$-Laplacian, and $σ$ is a nonnegative (locally finite) Radon measure on $Ω$. We give criteria for the existence problem. For the proof, we investigate various properties of $p$-superharmonic functions, especially the solvability of Dirichlet problems wi…
The present work has two objectives. First, we prove that a weight\-ed superlinear elliptic problem has infinitely many nonradial solutions in the unit ball. Second, we obtain the same conclusion in annuli for a more general nonlinearity which also involves a weight. We use a lower estimate of the energy level of radial solutions with $k-1$ zeros in the interior of the domain and a simple counting. Uniqueness results due to Tanaka \cite[2008]{Tanaka1} and \cite[2007]{Tanaka2} are very useful in our approach.
Let $Ω$ be a smooth bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^{N}$ and let $m$ be a possibly discontinuous and unbounded function that changes sign in $Ω$. Let $f:\left[ 0,\infty\right) \rightarrow\left[ 0,\infty\right) $ be a continuous function such that $k_{1}ξ^{p}\leq f\left(ξ\right) \leq k_{2}ξ^{p}$ for all $ξ\geq0$ and some $k_{1},k_{2}>0$ and $p\in\left(0,1\right) $. We study existence and nonexistence of strictly positive solutions for nonlinear elliptic problems of the form $-Δu=m\left(x\right) f\left(u\right) $ in $Ω$, $u=0$ on $\partialΩ$.
We study the existence of large solutions for nonlocal Dirichlet problems posed on a bounded, smooth domain, associated to fully nonlinear elliptic equations of order $2s$, with $s\in (1/2,1)$, and a coercive gradient term with subcritical power $0<p<2s$. Due to the nonlocal nature of the diffusion, new blow-up phenomena arise within the range $0<p<2s$, involving a continuum family of solutions and/or solutions blowing-up to $-\infty$ on the boundary. This is in striking difference with the local case studied by Lasry-Lions for the case subquadratic case $1<p<2$.
We establish a Riesz potential criterion for Lebesgue continuity points of functions of bounded $\mathbb{A}$-variation, where $\mathbb{A}$ is a $\mathbb{C}$-elliptic differential operator of arbitrary order. This result might even be of interest for classical functions of bounded variation.
We prove some refined asymptotic estimates for postive blowing up solutions to $Δu+εu=n(n-2)u^{\frac{n+2}{n-2}}$ on $Ω$, $\partial_νu=0$ on $\partialΩ$; $Ω$ being a smooth bounded domain of $\rn$, $n\geq 3$. In particular, we show that concentration can occur only on boundary points with nonpositive mean curvature when $n=3$ or $n\geq 7$. As a direct consequence, we prove the validity of the Lin-Ni's conjecture in dimension $n=3$ and $n\geq 7$ for mean convex domains and with bounded energy. Recent examples by Wang-Wei-Yan show that the bound on the energy is a necessary condition.
In this paper we prove the boundedness and Hölder continuity of quasilinear elliptic problems involving variable exponents for a homogeneous Dirichlet and a nonhomogeneous Neumann boundary condition, respectively. The novelty of our work is the fact that we allow critical growth even on the boundary and so we close the gap in the papers of Fan-Zhao [Nonlinear Anal. 36 (1999), no. 3, 295--318.] and Winkert-Zacher [Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst. Ser. S 5 (2012), no. 4, 865--878.] in which the critical cases are excluded. Our approach is based on a modified version of De Giorgi's iteration technique…
We develop arguments on the critical point theory for locally Lipschitz functionals on Orlicz-Sobolev spaces, along with convexity and compactness techniques to investigate existence of solution of the multivalued equation $\displaystyle - Δ_Φ u \in \partial j(.,u) + λh \mbox{in} Ω$, where $Ω\subset {\bf R}^{N}$ is a bounded smooth domain, $Φ: {\r} \longrightarrow [0,\infty)$ is a suitable N-function, $Δ_Φ$ is the corresponding $Φ$-Laplacian, $λ> 0$ is a parameter, $h:Ω\rightarrow{\r}$ is integrable and $\partial j(., u)$ is the subdifferential of a function $j$ associated with critical growth…
We consider the Dirichlet problem for positive solutions of the equation $-Δ_p (u) = f(u)$ in a convex, bounded, smooth domain $Ω\subset\R^N$, with $f$ locally Lipschitz continuous. \par We provide sufficient conditions guarantying $L^{\infty} $ a priori bounds for positive solutions of some elliptic equations involving the $p$-Laplacian and extend the class of known nonlinearities for which the solutions are $L^{\infty} $ a priori bounded. As a consequence we prove the existence of positive solutions in convex bounded domains.
The paper extends the results obtained by C. Kenig, F. Lin and Z. Shen in \cite{SZW2} to more general elliptic homogenization problems in two perspectives: lower order terms in the operator and no smoothness on the coefficients. We do not repeat their arguments. Instead we find the new weighted-type estimates for the smoothing operator at scale $\varepsilon$, and combining some techniques developed by Z. Shen in \cite{SZW12} leads to our main results. In addition, we also obtain sharp $O(\varepsilon)$ convergence rates in $L^{p}$ with $p=2d/(d-1)$, which were originally established by Z. Shen …
We show that for any uniformly elliptic fully nonlinear second-order equation with bounded measurable "coefficients" and bounded "free" term one can find an approximating equation which has a unique continuous and having the second derivatives locally bounded solution in a given smooth domain with smooth boundary data. The approximating equation is constructed in such a way that it modifies the original one only for large values of the unknown function and its derivatives.
We study resolvent approximations for elliptic differential nonselfadjoint operators with periodic coefficients in the limit of the small period. The class of operators covered by our analysis includes uniformly elliptic families with bounded coefficients and also with unbounded coefficients from the John-Nirenberg space $BMO$ (bounded mean oscillation). We apply the modified method of the first approximation with the usage of Steklov's smoothing.
