We study a nonlocal diffusion operator in a bounded smooth domain prescribing the flux through the boundary. This problem may be seen as a generalization of the usual Neumann problem for the heat equation. First, we prove existence, uniqueness and a comparison principle. Next, we study the behavior of solutions for some prescribed boundary data including blowing up ones. Finally, we look at a nonlinear flux boundary condition.
We propose and analyze a one-dimensional multi-species cross-diffusion system with non-zero-flux boundary conditions on a moving domain, motivated by the mod- eling of a Physical Vapor Deposition process. Using the boundedness by entropy method, we prove the existence of a global weak solution to the obtained system. In addition, existence of a solution to an optimal control problem defined on the fluxes is established under the assumption that the solution to the considered cross-diffusion system is unique. Lastly, we prove that in the case when the imposed external fluxes are constant and po…
We show a result of maximal regularity in spaces of Hölder continuous function, concerning linear parabolic systems, with dynamic or Wentzell boundary conditions, with an elliptic diffusion term on the boundary.
This paper is devoted to the inverse problem of recovering the unknown distributed flux on an inaccessible part of boundary using measurement data on the accessible part. We establish and verify a variational source condition for this inverse problem, leading to a logarithmic-type convergence rate for the corresponding Tikhonov regularization method under a low Sobolev regularity assumption on the distributed flux. Our proof is based on the conditional stability and Carleman estimates together with the complex interpolation theory on a proper Gelfand triple.
The initial boundary value problem for a class of scalar non autonomous conservation laws in one space dimension is proved to be well posed and stable with respect to variations in the flux. Targeting applications to traffic, the regularity assumptions on the flow are extended to a merely $\mathbf{L}^{\infty}$ dependence on time. These results ensure, for instance, the well posedness of a class of vehicular traffic models with time dependent speed limits. A traffic management problem is then shown to admit an optimal solution.
In this paper, we mainly introduce a general method to study the existence and uniqueness of solution of free boundary problems with partially degenerate diffusion.
In this paper, we first consider two scalar nonlocal diffusion problems with a free boundary and a fixed boundary. We obtain the global existence, uniqueness and longtime behaviour of solution of these two problems. The spreading-vanishing dichotomy and sharp criteria for spreading and vanishing are established. We also prove that accelerated spreading could happen if and only if a threshold condition is violated by kernel function. Then we discuss a classical Lotka-Volterra predator-prey model with nonlocal diffusions and a free boundary which can be seen as nonlocal diffusion counterpart of …
This paper presents boundary observer design for space and time dependent reaction-advection-diffusion equations using backstepping method. The method uses only a single measurement at the boundary of the systems. The existence of the observer kernel equation is proved using the method of successive approximation.
We consider a class of reaction-diffusion equations with a stochastic perturbation on the boundary. We show that in the limit of fast diffusion, one can rigorously approximate solutions of the system of PDEs with stochastic Neumann boundary conditions by the solution of a suitable stochastic/deterministic differential equation for the average concentration that involves reactions only. An interesting effect occurs, if the noise on the boundary does not change the averaging concentration, but is sufficiently large. Then surprising additional effective reaction terms appear. We focus on systems …
We show how the Stefan type free boundary problem with random diffusion in one space dimension can be approximated by the corresponding free boundary problem with nonlocal diffusion. The approximation problem is a slightly modified version of the nonlocal diffusion problem with free boundaries considered in [4,8]. The proof relies on the introduction of several auxiliary free boundary problems and constructions of delicate upper and lower solutions for these problems. As usual, the approximation is achieved by choosing the kernel function in the nonlocal diffusion term of the form $J_ε(x)=\fra…
In the present article, we study the diffusion equations with fractional time derivatives. The aim of this paper is to investigate the best possible regularity for the initial value/boundary value problems with non-homogeneous Dirichlet boundary data. The main tool we use here is called the transposition method.
This paper deals with a theoretical mathematical analysis of a one-dimensional-moving-boundary problem for the time-fractional diffusion equation, where the time-fractional derivative of order $\al$ $\in (0,1)$ is taken in the Caputo's sense. A generalization of the Hopf's lemma is proved, and then this result is used to prove a monotonicity property for the free-boundary when a fractional free-boundary Stefan problem is considered.
We present a model for nonlocal diffusion with Neumann boundary conditions in a bounded smooth domain prescribing the flux through the boundary. We study the limit of this family of nonlocal diffusion operators when a rescaling parameter related to the kernel of the nonlocal operator goes to zero. We prove that the solutions of this family of problems converge to a solution of the heat equation with Neumann boundary conditions.
We study the heat equation on a half-space with a linear dynamical boundary condition. Our main aim is to show that, if the diffusion coefficient tends to infinity, then the solutions converge (in a suitable sense) to solutions of the Laplace equation with the same dynamical boundary condition.
H{ö}lder regularity of parabolic equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions and application to reaction-diffusion and reaction-cross-diffusion systems
We consider an inverse boundary value problem for diffusion equations with multiple fractional time derivatives. We prove the uniqueness in determining a number of fractional time-derivative terms, the orders of the derivatives and spatially varying coefficients.
We analyze the effect of nonlinear boundary conditions on an advection-diffusion equation on the half-line. Our model is inspired by models for crystal growth where diffusion models diffusive relaxation of a displacement field, advection is induced by apical growth, and boundary conditions incorporate non-adiabatic effects on displacement at the boundary. The equation, in particular the boundary fluxes, possesses a discrete gauge symmetry, and we study the role of simple, entire solutions, here periodic, homoclinic, or heteroclinic relative to this gauge symmetry, in the global dynamics.
In this paper we study the local instability to the boundary equilibria and the local stability to the positive equilibria for some chemical reaction-diffusion systems. We first analyze a three-species system with boundary equilibria in some stoichiometric classes. Then We prove the convergence to the positive equilibria for a general reversible reaction-diffusion network as long as the initial data is closed enough to the the positive equilibria.
We study the heat equation on a half-space or on an exterior domain with a linear dynamical boundary condition. Our main aim is to establish the rate of convergence to solutions of the Laplace equation with the same dynamical boundary condition as the diffusion coefficient tends to infinity.
We discuss an initial-boundary value problem for a fractional diffusion equation with Caputo time-fractional derivative where the coefficients are dependent on spatial and time variables and the zero Dirichlet boundary condition is attached. We prove the unique existence of weak and regular solutions.
We consider reaction diffusion systems where components diffuse inside the domain and react on the surface through mass transport type boundary conditions. Under reasonable hypotheses, we establish the existence of component wise non-negative global solutions which are uniformly bounded in the sup norm.
In this paper we study the rate of convergence to the complex balanced equilibrium for some chemical reaction-diffusion systems with boundary equilibria. We first analyze a three-species system with boundary equilibria in some stoichiometric classes, and whose right hand side is bounded above by a quadratic nonlinearity in the positive orthant. We prove similar results on the convergence to the positive equilibrium for a fairly general two-species reversible reaction-diffusion network with boundary equilibria.
This paper focuses on a drift-diffusion system subjected to boundedly non dissipative Robin boundary conditions. A general existence result with large initial conditions is established by using suitable L1, L2 and trace estimates. Finally, two examples coming from the corrosion and the self-gravitation model are analyzed.
We study reaction-diffusion equations in cylinders with possibly nonlinear diffusion and possibly nonlinear Neumann boundary conditions. We provide a geometric Poincaré-type inequality and classification results for stable solutions, and we apply them to the study of an associated nonlocal problem. We also establish a counterexample in the corresponding framework for the fractional Laplacian.
We study a Robin boundary problem for degenerate parabolic equation. We suggest a notion of entropy solution and propose a result of existence and uniqueness. Numerical simulations illustrate some aspects of solution behaviour. Monodimensional experiments are presented.
We consider reaction-diffusion systems where components diffuse inside the domain and react on the surface through mass transport type boundary conditions on an evolving domain. Using Lyapunov functional and duality arguments, we establish the existence of component-wise non-negative global solutions.
We study the heat equation in the exterior of the unit ball with a linear dynamical boundary condition. Our main aim is to find upper and lower bounds for the rate of convergence to solutions of the Laplace equation with the same dynamical boundary condition as the diffusion coefficient tends to infinity.
Boundary characteristic point regularity is studied for a class of semilinear heat equations and an ODE criterion of regularity is obtained. Extensions to higher-order semilinear parabolic problems are discussed.
In this article, for a two dimensional fractional diffusion equation, we study an inverse problem for simultaneous restoration of the fractional order and the source term from the sparse boundary measurements. By the adjoint system corresponding to our diffusion equation, we construct useful quantitative relation between unknowns and measurements. From Laplace transform and the knowledge in complex analysis, the uniqueness theorem is proved.
The initial boundary value problem for a Cahn-Hilliard system subject to a dynamic boundary condition of Allen-Cahn type is treated. The vanishing of the surface diffusion on the dynamic boundary condition is the point of emphasis. By the asymptotic analysis as the diffusion coefficient tends to 0, one can expect that the solutions of the surface diffusion problem converge to the solution of the problem without the surface diffusion. This is actually the case, but the solution of the limiting problem naturally looses some regularity. Indeed, the system we investigate is rather complicate due t…
The time-fractional diffusion equation is considered, where the time derivative is either of Caputo or Riemann-Liouville type. The solution of a general initial-boundary value problem with time-dependent boundary conditions over bounded and unbounded domains is derived using the embedding method. The solution of the initial-boundary value problem, expressed in terms of a two-parameter auxiliary function, is used to obtain analytical solutions of moving boundary problems. In particular, a 'fractional' analogue of the Neumann solution to a classical Stefan problem for melting ice is found.
One-dimensional free boundary problem for a nonlinear diffusion - convection equation with a Dirichlet condition at fixed face $x=0$, variable in time, is considered. Throught several transformations the problem is reduced to a free boundary problem for a diffusion equation and the integral formulation is obtained. By using fixed point theorems, the existence of at least a solution, for small time, to a system of coupled nonlinear integral equations is obtained.
We examine initial-boundary value problems for diffusion equations with distributed order time-fractional derivatives. We prove existence and uniqueness results for the weak solution to these systems, together with its continuous dependency on initial value and source term. Moreover, under suitable assumption on the source term, we establish that the solution is analytic in time.
We construct solutions of nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations with nonlinear boundary conditions in spaces where the problem is supercritical and show the nonlinear balance required between the nonlinear terms in order to obtain a dissipative system. Assuming this balance, the dynamics of the solutions is the same that take place in subcritical spaces.
We consider a reaction-diffusion system where some components react and diffuse on the boundary of a region, while other components diffuse in the interior and react with those on the boundary through mass transport. We establish local well-posedness and global existence of solutions for these systems using classical potential theory and linear estimates for initial boundary value problems.
A mutualist model with nonlocal diffusions and a free boundary is first considered. We prove that this problem has a unique solution defined $t\ge0$, and its dynamics are governed by a spreading-vanishing dichotomy. Some criteria for spreading and vanishing are also given. Of particular importance is that we find that the solution of this problem has quite rich longtime behaviors, which vary with the conditions satisfied by kernel functions and are much different from those of the counterpart with local diffusion and free boundary. At last, we extend these results to the model with nonlocal di…
In this paper we consider scalar parabolic equations in a general non-smooth setting with emphasis on mixed interface and boundary conditions. In particular, we allow for dynamics and diffusion on a Lipschitz interface and on the boundary, where diffusion coefficients are only assumed to be bounded, measurable and positive semidefinite. In the bulk, we additionally take into account diffusion coefficients which may degenerate towards a Lipschitz surface. For this problem class, we introduce a unified functional analytic framework based on sesquilinear forms and show maximal regularity for the …
In this article we study inverse source problems for time-fractional diffusion equations from \textit{a posteriori} boundary measurement. Using the memory effect of these class of equations, we solve these inverse problems for several class of space or time dependent source terms. We prove also the unique determination of a general class of space-time dependent separated variables source terms from such measurement. Our approach is based on the study of singularities of the Laplace transform in time of boundary traces of solutions of time-fractional diffusion equations.
We consider a two-component competition-diffusion system with equal diffusion coefficients and inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. When the interspecific competition parameter tends to infinity, the system solution converges to that of a freeboundary problem. If all stationary solutions of this limit problem are non-degenerate and if a certain linear combination of the boundary data does not identically vanish, then for sufficiently large interspecific competition, all non-negative solutions of the competition-diffusion system converge to stationary states as time tends to infinity. S…
We study a class of free boundary problems of ecological models with nonlocal and local diffusions, which are natural extensions of free boundary problems of reaction diffusion systems in there local diffusions are used to describe the population dispersal, with the free boundary representing the spreading front of the species. We prove that such kind of nonlocal and local diffusion problems has a unique global solution, and then show that a spreading-vanishing dichotomy holds. Moreover, criteria of spreading and vanishing, and long time behavior of solution when spreading happens are establis…
We report on recent progress in the study of evolution processes involving degenerate parabolic equations what may exhibit free boundaries. The equations we have selected follow to recent trends in diffusion theory: considering anomalous diffusion with long-range effects, which leads to fractional operators or other operators involving kernels with large tails; and the combination of diffusion and aggregation effects, leading to delicate long-term equilibria whose description is still incipient.
This is the second part of our study of the Inertial Manifolds for 1D systems of reaction-diffusion-advection equations initiated in \cite{KZI} and it is devoted to the case of periodic boundary conditions. It is shown that, in contrast to the case of Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions, considered in the first part, Inertial Manifolds may not exist in the case of systems endowed by periodic boundary conditions. However, as also shown, inertial manifolds still exist in the case of scalar reaction-diffusion-advection equations. Thus, the existence or non-existence of inertial manifolds for…
In this paper we consider a reaction-diffusion equation of Fisher-KPP type inside an infinite cylindrical domain in $\mathbb{R}^{N+1}$, coupled with a reaction-diffusion equation on the boundary of the domain, where potentially fast diffusion is allowed. We will study the existence of an asymptotic speed of propagation for solutions of the Cauchy problem associated with such system, as well as the dependence of this speed on the diffusivity at the boundary and the amplitude of the cylinder. When $N=1$ the domain reduces to a strip between two straight lines. This models the effect of two roads…
We study the blow up solutions of a semilinear reaction diffusion system coupled in both equations and boundary conditions. The main purpose is to understand how the reaction terms and the absorption terms affect the blow-up properties. We derive the lower and upper bound for the blow-up rate, and find the blow-up set under certain assumptions.
This paper discusses finite time extinction for a perturbed fast diffusion equation with dynamic boundary conditions. The fast diffusion equation has the characteristic property of decay, such as the solution decays to zero in a finite amount of time depending upon the initial data. In the target problem, some $p$-th or $q$-th order perturbation term may work to blow up within this period. The problem arises from the conflict between the diffusion and the blow up, in the bulk and on the boundary. Firstly, the local existence and uniqueness of the solution are obtained. Finally, a result of fin…
A system of Boundary-Domain Integral Equations is derived from the mixed (Dirichlet-Neumann) boundary value problem for the diffusion equation in inhomogeneous media defined on an unbounded domain. Boundary-domain integral equations are formulated in terms of parametrix-based potential type integral operators defined on the boundary and the domain. Mapping properties of parametrix-based potentials on weighted Sobolev spaces are analysed. Equivalence between the original boundary value problem and the system of BDIEs is shown. Uniqueness of solution of the BDIEs is proved using Fredholm Alterna…
This is part II of our study on the free boundary problems with nonlocal and local diffusions. In part I, we obtained the existence, uniqueness, regularity and estimates of global solution. In part II here, we show a spreading-vanishing dichotomy, and provide the criteria of spreading and vanishing, as well as the long time behavior of solution when spreading happens.
In this paper we study nonlocal problems that are analogous to the local ones given by the Laplacian or the p-Laplacian with dynamical boundary conditions. We deal both with smooth and with singular kernels and show existence and uniqueness of solutions and study their asymptotic behaviour as t goes to infinity.
We prove the existence of a traveling wave solution for a boundary reaction diffusion equation when the reaction term is the combustion nonlinearity with ignition temperature. A key role in the proof is plaid by an explicit formula for traveling wave solutions of a free boundary problem obtained as singular limit for the reaction-diffusion equation (the so-called high energy activation energy limit). This explicit formula, which is interesting in itself, also allows us to get an estimate on the decay at infinity of the traveling wave (which turns out to be faster than the usual exponential dec…
We consider a family of initial boundary value problems governed by a fractional diffusion equation with Caputo derivative in time, where the parameter is the Newton heat transfer coefficient linked to the Robin condition on the boundary. For each problem we prove existence and uniqueness of solution by a Fourier approach. This will enable us to also prove the convergence of the family of solutions to the solution of the limit problem, which is obtained by replacing the Robin boundary condition with a Dirichlet boundary condition.
This paper introduces a family of transportation costs between non-negative measures. This family is used to obtain parabolic and reaction-diffusion equations with drift, subject to Dirichlet boundary condition, as the gradient flow of the entropy functional $\int_Ωρ\logρ+Vρ+1\hspace{1mm}dx$. In 2010, Alessio Figalli and Nicola Gigli introduced a transportation cost that can be used to obtain parabolic equations with drift subject to Dirichlet boundary condition. However, the drift and the boundary condition are coupled in their work. The costs in this paper allow the drift and the boundary co…
We complete the description, initiated in [6], of a free boundary travelling at constant speed in a half plane, where the propagation is controlled by a line having a large diffusion on its own. The main result of this work is that the free boundary is asymptotic to a line at infinity, whose angle to the horizontal is dicatated by the velocity of the wave imposed by the line. This helps understanding some rather counter-intuitive numerical simulations of [8].
We establish the interior and exterior Gauss-Green formulas for divergence-measure fields in $L^p$ over general open sets, motivated by the rigorous mathematical formulation of the physical principle of balance law via the Cauchy flux in the axiomatic foundation, for continuum mechanics allowing discontinuities and singularities. The method, based on a distance function, allows to give a representation of the interior (resp. exterior) normal trace of the field on the boundary of any given open set as the limit of classical normal traces over the boundaries of interior (resp. exterior) smooth a…
