Boundary-Domain Integral Equations for the Mixed Problem for the Diffusion Equation in Inhomogeneous Media based on a New Family of Parametrices on Unbounded Domains
A system of Boundary-Domain Integral Equations is derived from the mixed (Dirichlet-Neumann) boundary value problem for the diffusion equation in inhomogeneous media defined on an unbounded domain. Boundary-domain integral equations are formulated in terms of parametrix-based potential type integral operators defined on the boundary and the domain. Mapping properties of parametrix-based potentials on weighted Sobolev spaces are analysed. Equivalence between the original boundary value problem and the system of BDIEs is shown. Uniqueness of solution of the BDIEs is proved using Fredholm Alternative and compactness arguments adapted to weigthed Sobolev spaces.
Aleksandrov-Bakelman-Pucci maximum principles are studied for a class of fully nonlinear integro-differential equations of order $σ\in [2-\varepsilon_0,2)$, where $\varepsilon_0$ is a small constant depending only on given parameters. The goal of this paper is to improve an estimate of Guillen and Schwab (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal., 206, 2012) in order to avoid the dependence on $L^\infty$ norm of %the to the estimate depending only on $L^n$ norm the inhomogeneous term.
In this paper we provide another application of the Inhomogeneous Hopf-Ole\uınik Lemma (IHOL) proved in \cite{BM-IHOL-PartI} or \cite{Boyan-2}. As a matter of fact, we also provide a new and simpler proof of a slightly weaker version IHOL for the uniformly elliptic fully nonlinear case which is sufficient for most purposes. The paper has essentially two parts. In the first part, we use IHOL for unbounded RHS to develop a Caffarelli's "Lipschitz implies $C^{1,α}$" approach to prove Ladyzhenskaya-Uraltseva boundary gradient type estimates for functions in $S^{*}(γ, f)$ that vanishes on the bound…
We discuss the wellposedness of the Neumann problem on a half-space for the Kohn-Laplacian in the Heisenberg group. We then construct the Neumann function and explicitly represent the solution of the associated inhomogeneous problem.
We prove uniform Morrey-Campanato estimates for Helmholtz equations in the case of two unbounded inhomogeneous media separated by an interface. They imply weighted $L^2$-estimates for the solution. We prove also a uniform $L^2$-estimate {\em without weight} for the trace of the solution on the interface
The weak Harnack inequality for $L^p$-viscosity supersolutions of fully nonlinear second-order uniformly parabolic partial differential equations with unbounded coefficients and inhomogeneous terms is proved. It is shown that Hölder continuity of $L^p$-viscosity solutions is derived from the weak Harnack inequality for $L^p$-viscosity supersolutions. The local maximum principle for $L^p$-viscosity subsolutions and the Harnack inequality for $L^p$-viscosity solutions are also obtained. Several further remarks are presented when equations have superlinear growth in the first space derivatives.
We consider the control problem of the heat equation on bounded and unbounded domains, and more generally the corresponding inhomogeneous equation for the Schrödinger semigroup. We show that if the sequence of null-controls associated to an exhaustion of an unbounded domain converges, then the solutions do in the same way, and that the control cost estimate carries over to the limiting problem on the unbounded domain. This allows to infer the controllability on unbounded domains by studying the control problem on a sequence of bounded domains.
We consider the time-harmonic acoustic wave scattering by a bounded {\it anisotropic inhomogeneity} embedded in an unbounded {\it anisotropic} homogeneous medium. The material parameters may have discontinuities across the interface between the inhomogeneous interior and homogeneous exterior regions. The corresponding mathematical problem is formulated as a transmission problems for a second order elliptic partial differential equation of Helmholtz type with discontinuous variable coefficients. Using a localised quasi-parametrix based on the harmonic fundamental solution, the transmission prob…
We consider the scattering problem on locally perturbed periodic penetrable dielectric layers, which is formulated in terms of the full vector-valued time-harmonic Maxwell's equations. The right-hand side is not assumed to be periodic. At first, we derive a variational formulation for the electromagnetic scattering problem in a suitable Sobolev space on an unbounded domain and reformulate the problem into a family of bounded domain problems using the Bloch-Floquet transform. For this family we can show the unique existence of the solution by applying a carefully designed Helmholtz decompositio…
This paper is concerned with inverse acoustic source problems in an unbounded domain with dynamical boundary surface data of Dirichlet kind. The measurement data are taken at a surface far away from the source support. We prove uniqueness in recovering source terms of the form $f(x)g(t)$ and $f(x_1,x_2,t) h(x_3)$, where $g(t)$ and $h(x_3)$ are given and $x=(x_1, x_2, x_3)$ is the spatial variable in three dimensions. Without these a priori information, we prove that the boundary data of a family of solutions can be used to recover general source terms depending on both time and spatial variabl…
The steady motion of a viscous incompressible fluid in a junction of unbounded channels with sources and sinks is modeled through the Navier-Stokes equations under inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. In contrast to many previous works, the domain is not assumed to be simply-connected and the fluxes are not assumed to be small. In this very general setting, we prove the existence of a solution with a uniformly bounded Dirichlet integral in every compact subset. This is a generalization of the classical Ladyzhenskaya-Solonnikov result obtained under the additional assumption of zero bou…
We discuss a time-harmonic inverse scattering problem for the Helmholtz equation with compactly supported penetrable and possibly inhomogeneous scattering objects in an unbounded homogeneous background medium, and we develop a monotonicity relation for the far field operator that maps superpositions of incident plane waves to the far field patterns of the corresponding scattered waves. We utilize this monotonicity relation to establish novel characterizations of the support of the scattering objects in terms of the far field operator. These are related to and extend corresponding results known…
Aggregation equations and Patlak-Keller-Segel (PKS) models for chemotaxis with nonlinear diffusion are popular models for nonlocal aggregation phenomenon and are a source of a number of interesting mathematical problems in nonlinear PDE. The purpose of this work is twofold. First, we continue our previous work, which focused on nonlocal aggregation, modeled with a convolution. The goal was to unify the local and global theory of these convolution-type models, including the identification of a sharp critical mass; however, some cases involving unbounded domains were left open. In particular, th…
The aim of the paper is to address the behavior in large population of diffusions interacting on a random, possibly diluted and inhomogeneous graph. This is the natural continuation of a previous work, where the homogeneous Erd\H os-Rényi case was considered. The class of graphs we consider includes disordered $W$-random graphs, with possibly unbounded graphons. The main result concerns a quenched convergence (that is true for almost every realization of the random graph) of the empirical measure of the system towards the solution of a nonlinear Fokker-Planck PDE with spatial extension, also a…
We discuss a time-harmonic inverse scattering problem for a nonlinear Helmholtz equation with compactly supported inhomogeneous scattering objects that are described by a nonlinear refractive index in unbounded free space. Assuming the knowledge of a nonlinear far field operator, which maps Herglotz incident waves to the far field patterns of corresponding solutions of the nonlinear scattering problem, we show that the nonlinear index of refraction is uniquely determined. We also generalize two reconstruction methods, a factorization method and a monotonicity method, to recover the support of …
In this paper we study, in an open bounded set $Ω\subset\mathbb R^N$ with Lipschitz boundary $\partialΩ$, the Dirichlet problem for a nonlinear singular elliptic equation involving the $1$--Laplacian and a total variation term, that is, the inhomogeneous case of the equation appearing in the level set formulation of the inverse mean curvature flow. Our aim is twofold. On the one hand, we consider data belonging to the Marcinkiewicz space $L^{N,\infty}(Ω)$, which leads to unbounded solutions. So, we have to begin introducing the suitable notion of unbounded solution to this problem. Moreover, e…
In this paper we first study the generalized weighted Hardy spaces $H^p_{L,w}(X)$ for $0<p\le 1$ associated to nonnegative self-adjoint operators $L$ satisfying Gaussian upper bounds on the space of homogeneous type $X$ in both cases of finite and infinite measure. We show that the weighted Hardy spaces defined via maximal functions and atomic decompositions coincide. Then we prove weighted regularity estimates for the Green operators of the inhomogeneous Dirichlet and Neumann problems in suitable bounded or unbounded domains including bounded semiconvex domains, convex regions above a Lipschi…
We study 4 problems in the area of scattering of time harmonic acoustic or electromagnetic waves by unbounded rough surfaces/inhomogeneous layers. Specifically we study: i) a boundary value problem (BVP) for the Helmholtz equation, in both 2 and 3 dimensions, modelling scattering of time harmonic waves due to a source that lies within a finite distance of the boundary and which decays along the boundary, by a layer of spatially varying refractive index above an unbounded rough surface on which the field vanishes; ii) a BVP for the Helmholtz equation with an impedance boundary condition, in 2 a…
This paper considers the inverse problem of scattering of time-harmonic acoustic and electromagnetic plane waves by a bounded, inhomogeneous, penetrable obstacle with embedded objects inside. A new method is proposed to prove that the inhomogeneous penetrable obstacle can be uniquely determined from the far-field pattern at a fixed frequency, disregarding its contents. Our method is based on constructing a well-posed interior transmission problem in a small domain associated with the Helmholtz or modified Helmholtz equation and the Maxwell or modified Maxwell equations. A key role is played by…
We couple the mixed variational problem for the generalized Hodge-Helmholtz or Hodge-Laplace equation posed on a bounded three-dimensional Lipschitz domain with the first-kind boundary integral equation arising from the latter when constant coefficients are assumed in the unbounded complement. Recently developed Calderon projectors for the relevant boundary integral operators are used to perform a symmetric coupling. We prove stability of the coupled problem away from resonant frequencies by establishing a generalized Garding inequality (T-coercivity). The resulting system of equations describ…
This paper is devoted to analyse the Dirichlet problem for a nonlinear elliptic equation involving the $1$--Laplacian and a total variation term, that is, the inhomogeneous case of the equation arising in the level set formulation of the inverse mean curvature flow. We study this problem in an open bounded set with Lipschitz boundary. We prove an existence result and a comparison principle for non--negative $L^1$--data. Moreover, we search the summability that the solution reaches when more regular $L^p$--data, with $1<p<N$, are considered and we give evidence that this summability is optimal.…
