This paper discusses finite time extinction for a perturbed fast diffusion equation with dynamic boundary conditions. The fast diffusion equation has the characteristic property of decay, such as the solution decays to zero in a finite amount of time depending upon the initial data. In the target problem, some $p$-th or $q$-th order perturbation term may work to blow up within this period. The problem arises from the conflict between the diffusion and the blow up, in the bulk and on the boundary. Firstly, the local existence and uniqueness of the solution are obtained. Finally, a result of finite time extinction for some small initial data is presented.
In this paper the author studies the problem of the homogenization of a diffusion perturbed by a periodic reflection invariant vector field. The vector field is assumed to have fixed direction but varying amplitude. The existence of a homogenized limit is proven and formulas for the effective diffusion constant are given. In dimension $d=1$ the effective diffusion constant is always less than the constant for the pure diffusion. In $d>1$ this property no longer holds in general.
We exhibit a singularly perturbed parabolic problems for which the asymptotic behavior can be described by an one-dimensional ordinary differential equation. We estimate the continuity of attractors in the Hausdorff metric by rate of convergence of resolvent operator.
We study the asymptotics of Allen-Cahn-type bistable reaction-diffusion equations which are additively perturbed by a stochastic forcing (time white noise). The conclusion is that the long time, large space behavior of the solutions is governed by an interface moving with curvature dependent normal velocity which is additively perturbed by time white noise. The result is global in time and does not require any regularity assumptions on the evolving front. The main tools are (i)~the notion of stochastic (pathwise) solution for nonlinear degenerate parabolic equations with multiplicative rough (…
We consider singularly perturbed convection-diffusion equations on one-dimensional networks (metric graphs) as well as the transport problems arising in the vanishing diffusion limit. Suitable coupling condition at inner vertices are derived that guarantee conservation of mass as well as dissipation of a mathematical energy which allows us to prove stability and well-posedness. For single intervals and appropriately specified initial conditions, it is well-known that the solutions of the convection-diffusion problem converge to that of the transport problem with order $O(\sqrtε)$ in the $L^\in…
In this paper, a standard about the existence and upper semi-continuity of pullback attractors in the non-initial space is established for some classes of non-autonomous SPDE. This pullback attractor, which is the omega-limit set of the absorbing set constructed in the initial space, is completely determined by the asymptotic compactness of solutions in both the initial and non-initial spaces. As applications, the existences and upper semi-continuity of pullback attractors in $H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)$ are proved for stochastic non-autonomous reaction-diffusion equation driven by a multiplicative noi…
We deal with a singularly perturbed optimal control problem with slow and fast variable depending on a parameter ε. We study the asymptotic, as ε goes to 0, of the corresponding value functions, and show convergence, in the sense of weak semilimits, to sub and supersolution of a suitable limit equation containing the effective Hamiltonian. The novelty of our contribution is that no compactness condition are assumed on the fast variable. This generalization requires, in order to perform the asymptotic proce- dure, an accurate qualitative analysis of some auxiliary equations posed on the space o…
The aim of this paper is the rigorous derivation of a stochastic non-linear diffusion equation from a radiative transfer equation perturbed with a random noise. The proof of the convergence relies on a formal Hilbert expansion and the estimation of the remainder. The Hilbert expansion has to be done up to order 3 to overcome some diffculties caused by the random noise.
Let E be an unbounded open (or closed) domain in Euclidean space of dimension greater or equal to two. We present conservativeness criteria for (possibly reflected) diffusions with state space E that are associated to fairly general perturbed divergence form operators. Our main tool is a recently extended forward and backward martingale decomposition, which reduces to the well-known Lyons-Zheng decomposition in the symmetric case.
We derive the hydrodynamic limit of a kinetic equation with a stochastic, short range perturbation of the velocity operator. Under some mixing hypotheses on the stochastic perturbation, we establish a diffusion-approximation result: the limit we obtain is a parabolic stochastic partial differential equation on the macroscopic parameter, the density here.
We study the stochastic diffusive limit of a kinetic radiative transfer equation, which is non-linear, involving a small parameter and perturbed by a smooth random term. Under an appropriate scaling for the small parameter, using a generalization of the perturbed test-functions method, we show the convergence in law to a stochastic non-linear fluid limit.
We consider a two-dimensional singularly perturbed transmission problem with two different diffusion coefficients, in a domain with smooth (analytic) boundary. The solution will contain boundary layers only in the part of the domain where the diffusion coefficient is high and interface layers along the interface. Utilizing existing and newly derived regularity results for the exact solution, we design a robust $hp$ finite element method for its approximation. Under the assumption of analytic input data, we show that the method converges at an e{xponential} rate, provided the mesh and polynomia…
We consider a two-species competition-diffusion system involving a small parameter $\varepsilon>0$ and discuss the validity of formal asymptotic expansions of solutions near the sharp interface limit $\varepsilon\approx0$. We assume that the corresponding ODE system has two stable equilibria. As in the scalar Allen--Cahn equation, it is known that the motion of the sharp interfaces of such systems is governed by the mean curvature flow with a driving force. The formal expansion also suggests that the profile of the transition layers converges to that of a traveling wave solution as $\varepsilo…
In this paper we give sufficient conditions on $α\geq 0$ and $c\in \mathbb{R}$ ensuring that the space of test functions $C_c^\infty(\mathbb{R}^N)$ is a core for the operator $$L_0u=(1+|x|^α)Δu+\frac{c}{|x|^2}u=:Lu+\frac{c}{|x|^2}u,$$ and $L_0$ with suitable domain generates a quasi-contractive and positivity preserving $C_0$-semigroup in $L^p(\mathbb{R}^N),\,1<p<\infty$. The proofs are based on some $L^p$-weighted Hardy's inequality and perturbation techniques.
We are concerned with the qualitative analysis of positive singular solutions with blow-up boundary for a class of logistic-type equations with slow diffusion and variable potential. We establish the exact blow-up rate of solutions near the boundary in terms of Karamata regular variation theory. This enables us to deduce the uniqueness of the singular solution.
A general problem of current interest is the analysis of diffusion problems in singularly perturbed domains, within which small subdomains are removed from the domain interior and boundary conditions imposed on the resulting holes. One major application is to intracellular diffusion, where the holes could represent organelles or biochemical substrates. In this paper we use a combination of matched asymptotic analysis and Green's function methods to calculate the so-called accumulation time for relaxation to steady state in 2D domains. The standard measure of the relaxation rate is in terms of …
We study the limit of a kinetic evolution equation involving a small parameter and perturbed by a smooth random term which also involves the small parameter. Generalizing the classical method of perturbed test functions, we show the convergence to the solution of a stochastic diffusion equation.
This paper presents an extended version of the article [Franz, S., Kopteva, N.: J. Differential Equations, 252 (2012)]. The main improvement compared to the latter is in that here we additionally estimate the mixed second-order derivative of the Green's function. The case of Neumann conditions along the characteristic boundaries is also addressed. A singularly perturbed convection-diffusion problem is posed in the unit square with a horizontal convective direction. Its solutions exhibit parabolic and exponential boundary layers. Sharp estimates of the Green's function and its first- and second…
Boundary value problems for diffusion in singularly perturbed domains (domains with small holes removed from the interior) is a topic of considerable current interest. Applications include intracellular diffusive transport and the spread of pollutants or heat from localized sources. In a previous paper, we introduced a new method for characterizing the approach to steady-state in the case of two-dimensional (2D) diffusion. This was based on a local measure of the relaxation rate known as the accumulation time $T(\x)$. The latter was calculated by solving the diffusion equation in Laplace space…
This paper is concerned with backward problem for nonlinear space fractional diffusion with additive noise on the right-hand side and the final value. To regularize the instable solution, we develop some new regularized method for solving the problem. In the case of constant coefficients, we use the truncation methods. In the case of perturbed time dependent coefficients, we apply a new quasi-reversibility method. We also show the convergence rate between the regularized solution and the sought solution under some a priori assumption on the sought solution.
Localized patterns in singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion equations typically consist of slow parts -- in which the associated solution follows an orbit on a slow manifold in a reduced spatial dynamical system -- alternated by fast excursions -- in which the solution jumps from one slow manifold to another, or back to the original slow manifold. In this paper we consider the existence and stability of stationary and traveling slow localized patterns that do not exhibit such jumps, i.e. that are completely embedded in a slow manifold of the singularly perturbed spatial dynamical system. The…
We study the stochastic fractional diffusive limit of a kinetic equation involving a small parameter and perturbed by a smooth random term. Generalizing the method of perturbed test functions, under an appropriate scaling for the small parameter, and with the moment method used in the deterministic case, we show the convergence in law to a stochastic fluid limit involving a fractional Laplacian.
We consider a class of singularly perturbed 2-component reaction-diffusion equations which admit bistable traveling front solutions, manifesting as sharp, slow-fast-slow, interfaces between stable homogeneous rest states. In many example systems, such as models of desertification fronts in dryland ecosystems, such fronts can exhibit an instability by which the interface destabilizes into fingering patterns. Motivated by the appearance of such patterns, we propose two versions of a 2D stability criterion for (transversal) long wavelength perturbations along the interface of these traveling slow…
We consider a class of nonlinear fractional equations having the Caputo fractional derivative of the time variable $t$, the fractional order of the self-adjoint positive definite unbounded operator in a Hilbert space and a singular nonlinear source. These equations are generalizations of some well-known fractional equation such as the fractional Cahn-Allen equation, the fractional Burger equation, the fractional Cahn-Hilliard equation, the fractional Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation, etc. We study both the initial value and the final value problem. Under some suitable assumptions, we investigate …
We consider stochastic non-linear diffusion equations with a highly singular diffusivity term and multiplicative gradient-type noise. We study existence and uniqueness of non-negative variational solutions in terms of stochastic variational inequalities. We also show extinction in finite time with probability one. These kind of equations arise, e.g. in the use for simulation of image restoring techniques or for modeling turbulence.
