In this paper the author studies the problem of the homogenization of a diffusion perturbed by a periodic reflection invariant vector field. The vector field is assumed to have fixed direction but varying amplitude. The existence of a homogenized limit is proven and formulas for the effective diffusion constant are given. In dimension $d=1$ the effective diffusion constant is always less than the constant for the pure diffusion. In $d>1$ this property no longer holds in general.
This paper concerns with two issues. The first issue is the existence and the uniqueness of the ergodic type number $d$ which appears in the oblique boundary condition. The second issue is the application of the number for the study of homogenizations of oscillating Neumann boundary conditions.
Homogenized laws for sequences of high-contrast two-phase non-symmetric conductivities perturbed by a parameter $h$ are derived in two and three dimensions. The parameter $h$ characterizes the antisymmetric part of the conductivity for an idealized model of a conductor in the presence of a magnetic field. In dimension two an extension of the Dykhne transformation to non-periodic high conductivities permits to prove that the homogenized conductivity depends on $h$ through some homogenized matrix-valued function obtained in the absence of a magnetic field. This result is improved in the periodic…
We study the convergence of the Method of Reflections for the Dirichlet problem of the Poisson and the Stokes equations in perforated domains which consist in the exterior of balls. We prove that the method converges if the balls are contained in a bounded region and the density of the electrostatic capacity of the balls is sufficiently small. If the capacity density is too large or the balls extend to the whole space, the method diverges, but we provide a suitable modification of the method that converges to the solution of the Dirichlet problem also in this case. We give new proofs of classi…
In this paper, we consider the homogenization of the p--Laplace equation with a periodic coefficient that is perturbed by a local defect. This setting has been introduced in [6, 7] in the linear setting p = 2. We construct the correctors and we derive convergence results to the homogenized solution in the case p > 2 under the assumption that the periodic correctors are non degenerate.
We give a simplified presentation of the obstacle problem approach to stochastic homogenization for elliptic equations in nondivergence form. Our argument also applies to equations which depend on the gradient of the unknown function. In the latter case, we overcome difficulties caused by a lack of estimates for the first derivatives of approximate correctors by modifying the perturbed test function argument to take advantage of the spreading of the contact set.
The periodic homogenization problem of integro-differential equations of the alpha stable L{é}vy operators is studied in this paper. Thanking to the symmetry of the L{é}vy density, we can use the method of the formal asymptotic expansion, to connect the problem to the ergodic cell problem. A rigorous proof is given by the perturbed test function's method.
We exhibit a class of singularly perturbed parabolic problems which the asymptotic behavior can be described by a system of ordinary differential equation. We estimate the convergence of attractors in the Hausdorff metric by rate of convergence of resolvent operators. Application to spatial homogenization and large diffusion except in a neighborhood of a point will be considered.
We consider the perturbation of elliptic operators of the form $P(\bx,\bD)$ by random, rapidly varying, sufficiently mixing, potentials of the form $q(\frac{\bx}\eps,ω)$. We analyze the source and spectral problems associated to such operators and show that the properly renormalized difference between the perturbed and unperturbed solutions may be written asymptotically as $\eps\to0$ as explicit Gaussian processes. Such results may be seen as central limit corrections to the homogenization (law of large numbers) process. Similar results are derived for more general elliptic equations in one di…
In this paper we determine, in dimension three, the effective conductivities of non periodic high-contrast two-phase cylindrical composites, placed in a constant magnetic field, without any assumption on the geometry of their cross sections. Our method, in the spirit of the H-convergence of Murat-Tartar, is based on a compactness result and the cylindrical nature of the microstructure. The homogenized laws we obtain extend those of the periodic fibre-reinforcing case of [M. Briane and L. Pater. Homogenization of high-contrast two-phase conductivities perturbed by a magnetic field. Comparison b…
We prove the homogenization of fully nonlinear parabolic equations with periodic oscillating Dirichlet boundary conditions on certain general prescribed space-time domains. It was proved in [9,10] that for elliptic equations, the homogenized boundary data exists at boundary points with irrational normal directions, and it is generically discontinuous elsewhere. However for parabolic problems, on a flat moving part of the boundary, we prove the existence of continuous homogenized boundary data $\bar{g}$. We also show that, unlike the elliptic case, $\bar{g}$ can be discontinuous even if the ope…
This work is a follow-up to our previous work "A numerical approach related to defect-type theories for some weakly random problems in homogenization" (preprint available on this archive). It extends and complements, both theoretically and experimentally, the results presented there. Under consideration is the homogenization of a model of a weakly random heterogeneous material. The material consists of a reference periodic material randomly perturbed by another periodic material, so that its homogenized behavior is close to that of the reference material. We consider laws for the random pertur…
We consider an homogenization problem for the second order elliptic equation $-\operatorname{div}\left(a(./\varepsilon) \nabla u^{\varepsilon} \right)=f$ when the coefficient $a$ is almost translation-invariant at infinity and models a geometry close to a periodic geometry. This geometry is characterized by a particular discrete gradient of the coefficient $a$ that belongs to a Lebesgue space $L^p(\mathbb{R}^d)$ for $p\in[1,+\infty[$. When $p<d$, we establish a discrete adaptation of the Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev inequality in order to show that the coefficient $a$ actually belongs to a cert…
This paper revisits a homogenization problem studied by L. Tartar related to a tridimensional Stokes equation perturbed by a drift (connected to the Coriolis force). Here, a scalar equation and a two-dimensional Stokes equation with a $L^2$-bounded oscillating drift are considered. Under higher integrability conditions the Tartar approach based on the oscillations test functions method applies and leads to a limit equation with an extra zero-order term. When the drift is only assumed to be equi-integrable in $L^2$, the same limit behaviour is obtained. However, the lack of integrability makes …
We consider the corrector equation associated, in homogenization theory , to a linear second-order elliptic equation in divergence form --$\partial$i(aij$\partial$ju) = f , when the diffusion coefficient is a locally perturbed periodic coefficient. The question under study is the existence (and uniqueness) of the corrector, strictly sublinear at infinity, with gradient in L r if the local perturbation is itself L r , r < +$\infty$. The present work follows up on our works [7, 8, 9], providing an alternative, more general and versatile approach , based on an a priori estimate, for this well-pos…
In several works, the theory of strongly continuous groups is used to build a framework for solving stochastic homogenization problems. Following this idea, we construct a detailed and comprehensive theory of homogenization. This enables to solve homogenization problems in algebras with mean value, regardless of whether they are ergodic or not, thereby responding affirmatively to the question raised by Zhikov and Krivenko [V.V. Zhikov, E.V. Krivenko, Homogenization of singularly perturbed elliptic operators. Matem. Zametki, 33 (1983) 571-582 (english transl.: Math. Notes, 33 (1983) 294-300)] t…
We consider a general second order matrix operator in a multi-dimensional domain subject to a classical boundary condition. This operator is perturbed by a first order differential operator, the coefficients of which depend arbitrarily on a small multi-dimensional parameter. We study the existence of a limiting (homogenized) operator in the sense of the norm resolvent convergence for such perturbed operator. The first part of our main results states that the norm resolvent convergence is equivalent to the convergence of the coefficients in the perturbing operator in certain space of multiplier…
This paper is concerned with the behavior of the ergodic constant associated with convex and superlinear Hamilton-Jacobi equation in a periodic environment which is perturbed either by medium with increasing period or by a random Bernoulli perturbation with small parameter. We find a first order Taylor's expansion for the ergodic constant which depends on the dimension d. When d = 1 the first order term is non trivial, while for all d $\ge$ 2 it is always 0. Although such questions have been looked at in the context of linear uniformly elliptic homogenization, our results are the first of this…

We consider the homogenization of a singularly perturbed self-adjoint fourth order elliptic equation with locally periodic coefficients, stated in a bounded domain. We impose Dirichlet boundary conditions on the boundary of the domain. The presence of large parameters in the lower order terms and the dependence of the coefficients on the slow variable give rise to the effect of localization of the eigenfunctions. We show that the $j$th eigenfunction can be approximated by a rescaled function that is constructed in terms of the $j$th eigenfunction of fourth or second order order effective opera…
We prove spectral stability results for the $curl curl$ operator subject to electric boundary conditions on a cavity upon boundary perturbations. The cavities are assumed to be sufficiently smooth but we impose weak restrictions on the strength of the perturbations. The methods are of variational type and are based on two main ingredients: the construction of suitable Piola-type transformations between domains and the proof of uniform Gaffney inequalities obtained by means of uniform a priori $H^2$-estimates for the Poisson problem of the Dirichlet Laplacian. The uniform a priori estimates are…
We consider an eigenvalue problem for a divergence form elliptic operator $A_ε$ with high contrast periodic coefficients with period $ε$ in each coordinate, where $ε$ is a small parameter. The coefficients are perturbed on a bounded domain of `order one' size. The local perturbation of coefficients for such operator could result in emergence of localized waves - eigenfunctions with corresponding eigenvalues lying in the gaps of the Floquet-Bloch spectrum. We prove that, for the so-called double porosity type scaling, the eigenfunctions decay exponentially at infinity, uniformly in $ε$. Then, u…
We consider a family $\{Ω^\varepsilon\}_{\varepsilon>0}$ of periodic domains in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with waveguide geometry and analyse spectral properties of the Neumann Laplacian $-Δ_{Ω^\varepsilon}$ on $Ω^\varepsilon$. The waveguide $Ω^\varepsilon$ is a union of a thin straight strip of the width $\varepsilon$ and a family of small protuberances with the so-called "room-and-passage" geometry. The protuberances are attached periodically, with a period $\varepsilon$, along the strip upper boundary. For $\varepsilon\to 0$ we prove a (kind of) resolvent convergence of $-Δ_{Ω^\varepsilon}$ to a certa…

We give an example of a scalar second order differential operator in the plane with double periodic coefficients and describe its modification, which causes an additional spectral band in the essential spectrum. The modified operator is obtained by applying to the coefficients a mirror reflection with respect to a vertical or horizontal line. This change gives rise to Rayleigh type waves localized near the line. The results are proven using asymptotic analysis, and they are based on high contrast of the coefficient functions.
We proceed here with our systematic study, initiated in [3], of multiscale problems with defects, within the context of homogenization theory. The case under consideration here is that of a diffusion equation with a diffusion coefficient of the form of a periodic function perturbed by an $L^r (R^d ) , 1 < r < +$\infty$$ , function modeling a localized defect. We outline the proof of the following approximation result: the corrector function, the existence of which has been established in [3,4], allows to approximate the solution of the original multiscale equation with essentially the same acc…
We are concerned with the structural stability of conical shocks in the three-dimensional steady supersonic flows past Lipschitz perturbed cones whose vertex angles are less than the critical angle. The flows under consideration are governed by the steady isothermal Euler equations for potential flow with axisymmetry so that the equations contain a singular geometric source term. We first formulate the shock stability problem as an initial-boundary value problem with the leading conical shock-front as a free boundary, and then establish the existence and asymptotic behavior of global entropy s…
