The present work has two objectives. First, we prove that a weight\-ed superlinear elliptic problem has infinitely many nonradial solutions in the unit ball. Second, we obtain the same conclusion in annuli for a more general nonlinearity which also involves a weight. We use a lower estimate of the energy level of radial solutions with $k-1$ zeros in the interior of the domain and a simple counting. Uniqueness results due to Tanaka \cite[2008]{Tanaka1} and \cite[2007]{Tanaka2} are very useful in our approach.
This paper is concerned with the following system of elliptic equations {equation*} \{{array}{ll} -Δu+u= F_u(|x|,u,v), & \hbox{} -Δv+v=- F_v(|x|,u,v), & \hbox{} \,\,\,\,\,u,v\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^N). & \hbox{} {array}. {equation*} It is shown that if $F$ is odd in $(u,v)$ and satisfy some growth conditions, then $(\mathcal{S})$ has infinitely many both radial and nonradial solutions. The proof relies on the Principle of Symmetric Criticality and a generalized Fountain Theorem for strongly indefinite functionals.
We obtain an improved version of a recent result concerning the existence of nonnegative nonradial solutions $u\in D^{1,2}(\mathbb{R}^{N})\cap L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{N},\left| x\right| ^{-α}dx)$ to the equation \[ -\triangle u+\displaystyle\frac{A}{\left| x\right| ^{α}}u=f\left( u\right) \quad \text{in }\mathbb{R}^{N},\quad N\geq 3,\quad A,α>0, \] where $f$ is a continuous nonlinearity satisfying $f\left( 0\right) =0$.
In this article we consider the system of equations Δu_{i}=p_{i}(x)f_{i}(u_{1},...,u_{d}) for i=1,...,d on R^{N}, N\geq3 and d\in{1,2,3,4,...}. We prove that the considered system has a bounded positive entire solution under some conditions on p_{i} and f_{i}. Also, we give a necessary condition as well as a sufficient condition for a positive radial solution to be large. The method of proving theorems is essentially based on a successive approximation. Furthermore, a non-radially symmetric solution is obtained by using a lower and upper solution method.
Let $f$ be a continuous and non-decreasing function such that $f>0$ on $(0,\infty)$, $f(0)=0$, $\sup \_{s\geq 1}f(s)/s< \infty$ and let $p$ be a non-negative continuous function. We study the existence and nonexistence of explosive solutions to the equation $Δu+|\nabla u|=p(x)f(u)$ in $Ω,$ where $Ω$ is either a smooth bounded domain or $Ω=\RR^N$. If $Ω$ is bounded we prove that the above problem has never a blow-up boundary solution. Since $f$ does not satisfy the Keller-Osserman growth condition at infinity, we supply in the case $Ω=\RR^N$ a necessary and sufficient condition for the existenc…
Many existence and nonexistence results are known for nonnegative radial solutions $u\in D^{1,2}(\mathbb{R}^{N})\cap L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{N},\left|x\right| ^{-α}dx)$ to the equation \[ -\triangle u+\dfrac{A}{\left| x\right| ^{α}}u=f\left( u\right) \quad \textrm{in }\mathbb{R}^{N},\quad N\geq 3,\quad A,α>0, \] with nonlinearites satisfying $\left| f\left( u\right) \right| \leq \left(\mathrm{const.}\right) u^{p-1}$ for some $p>2$. Existence of nonradial solutions, by contrast, is known only for $N\geq 4$, $α=2$, $f\left( u\right) =u^{(N+2)/(N-2)}$ and $A$ large enough. Here we show that the equatio…
We define some Nehari-type constraints using an orthogonal decomposition of the Sobolev space $H^1_0$ and prove the existence of multibump nodal solutions for an indefinite superlinear elliptic problem.
We establish existence and regularity of positive solutions for a class of quasilinear elliptic systems with singular and superlinear terms. The approach is based on sub-supersolution methods for systems of quasilinear singular equations and the Schauder's fixed point Theorem.
We are concerned with fully nonlinear possibly degenerate elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) with superlinear terms with respect to $Du$. We prove several comparison principles among viscosity solutions which may be unbounded under some polynomial-type growth conditions. Our main result applies to PDEs with convex superlinear terms but we also obtain some results in nonconvex cases. Applications to monotone systems of PDEs are given.
Symmetry plays a basic role in variational problems (settled e.g. in $\mathbb R^{n}$ or in a more general manifold), for example to deal with the lack of compactness which naturally appear when the problem is invariant under the action of a noncompact group. In $\mathbb R^n$, a compactness result for invariant functions with respect to a subgroup $G$ of $\mathrm{O}(n)$ has been proved under the condition that the $G$ action on $\mathbb R^n$ is compatible, see \cite{willem}. As a first result we generalize this and show here that the compactness is recovered for particular subgroups of the isom…
We describe a new method of proving a priori bounds for positive supersolutions and solutions of superlinear elliptic PDE, based on global weak Harnack inequalities and a quantitative Hopf lemma. Novel results based on the method include: (i) equations without a boundary condition on the whole boundary; (ii) equations with nonlinearities which do not have precise growth at infinity; (iii) systems of inequalities with opposite sign.
In this paper we consider second order fully nonlinear operators with an additive superlinear gradient term. Like in the pioneering paper of Brezis for the semilinear case, we obtain the existence of entire viscosity solutions, defined in all the space, without assuming global bounds. A uniqueness result is also obtained for special gradient terms, subject to a convexity/concavity type assumption where superlinearity is essential and has to be handled in a different way from the linear case.
We extend the Caffarelli-Świech-Winter $C^{1,α}$ regularity estimates to $L^p$-viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations in nondivergence form with superlinear growth in the gradient and unbounded coefficients. As an application, in addition to the usual $W^{2,p}$ results, we prove the existence of positive eigenvalues for proper operators with nonnegative unbounded weight, in particular for Pucci's operators with unbounded coefficients.
Results on existence and multiplicity of solutions for a nonlinear elliptic problem driven by the $Φ$-Laplace operator are established. We employ minimization arguments on suitable Nehari manifolds to build a negative and a positive ground state solutions. In order to find a nodal solution we employ additionally the well known Deformation Lemma and Topological Degree Theory.
In this paper we are interested in positive classical solutions of \begin{equation} \label{eqx} \left\{\begin{array}{ll} -Δu = a(x) u^{p-1} & \mbox{ in } Ω, \\ u>0 & \mbox{ in } Ω, \\ u= 0 & \mbox{ on } \pOm, \end {array}\right. \end{equation} where $Ω$ is a bounded annular domain (not necessarily an annulus) in $\IR^N$ $(N \ge3)$ and $ a(x)$ is a nonnegative continuous function. We show the existence of a classical positive solution for a range of supercritical values of $p$ when the problem enjoys certain mild symmetry and monotonicity conditions. As a consequence of our results, we shall sh…
In this paper, we study the existence of solutions for the following superlinear elliptic equation with nonlinear boundary value condition $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} -Δu+u=|u|^{r-2}u &\text{in} \; Ω,\\ \\ \frac{\partial u}{\partial ν}=|u|^{q-2}u &\text{on}\;\partialΩ, \end{array} \right. $$ where $Ω\subset \mathbb R^N, N\geq 3$ is a bounded domain with smooth boundary. We will prove the existence results for the above equation under four different cases: (i) Both $q$ and $r$ are subcritical; (ii) $r$ is critical and $q$ is subcritical; (iii) $r$ is subcritical and $q$ is critical; (iv) Both …
In this paper we are going to show the existence of a nontrivial solution to the following model problem, \begin{equation*} \left\{\begin{array}{lll} -Δ(u) = 2uln(1+u^2)+\frac{|u|^2}{1+u^2}2u+u(sin(u)-cos(u)) \mbox{a.e. on } Ω\frac{\partial u}{\partial η} = 0 {a.e. on} \partial Ω. \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} As one can see the right hand side is superlinear. But we can not use an Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition in order to obtain that the corresponding energy functional satisfies (PS) condition. However, it follows that the energy functional satisfies the Cerami (PS) condition.
Let $M$ be a complete non-compact Riemannian manifold and let $σ$ be a Radon measure on $M$. We study the problem of existence or non-existence of positive solutions to a semilinear elliptic inequaliy \begin{equation*} -Δu\geq σu^{q}\quad \text{in}\,\,M, \end{equation*} where $q>1$. We obtain necessary and sufficent criteria for existence of positive solutions in terms of Green function of $Δ$. In particular, explicit necessary and sufficient conditions are given when $M$ has nonnegative Ricci curvature everywhere in $M$, or more generally when Green's function satisfies the 3G-inequality.
This paper is concerned with the attraction-repulsion chemotaxis system with superlinear logistic degradation, \begin{align*} \begin{cases} u_t = Δu - χ\nabla\cdot(u \nabla v) + ξ\nabla\cdot (u \nabla w) + λu - μu^k, \quad &x \in Ω,\ t>0,\\[1.05mm] 0= Δv + αu - βv, \quad &x \in Ω,\ t>0,\\[1.05mm] 0= Δw + γu - δw, \quad &x \in Ω,\ t>0, \end{cases} \end{align*} under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions, in a ball $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ ($n \ge 3$), with constant parameters $λ\in \mathbb{R}$, $k>1$, $μ, χ, ξ, α, β, γ, δ>0$. Blow-up phenomena in the system have been well investigated in the c…
The aim of this work is to present results about existence of solutions for a class of biharmonic elliptic problems with homogeneous Navier conditions. The problem is symmetric and has linear behavior on -\infty and superlinear on +\infty. To obtain these results we apply topological degree theory.
Let $(V,μ)$ be an infinite, connected, locally finite weighted graph. We study the problem of existence or non-existence of positive solutions to a semi-linear elliptic inequality \begin{equation*} Δu+u^σ\leq0\quad \text{in}\,\,V, \end{equation*} where $Δ$ is the standard graph Laplacian on $V$ and $σ>0$. For $σ\in(0,1]$, the inequality admits no nontrivial positive solution. For $σ>1$, assuming condition \textbf{($p_0$)} on $(V,μ)$, we obtain a sharp condition for nonexistence of positive solutions in terms of the volume growth of the graph, that is \begin{equation*} μ(o,n)\lesssim n^{\frac{2…
In this work we prove the existence of infinitely many nonradial solutions that change signal to the problem $-Δu=f(u)$ in $B$ with $u=0$ on $\partial B$, where $B$ is the unit ball in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and $f$ is a continuous and odd function with exponential critical growth.
We study the problem of the existence and nonexistence of positive solutions to a superlinear second-order divergence type elliptic equation with measurable coefficients $(*)$: $-\nabla\cdot a\cdot\nabla u=u^p$ in an unbounded cone--like domain $G\subset\bf R^N$ $(N\ge 3)$. We prove that the critical exponent $p^*(a,G)=\inf\{p>1 : (*) \hbox{has a positive supersolution in} G\}$ for a nontrivial cone-like domain is always in $(1,N/(N-2))$ and in contrast with exterior domains depends both on the geometry of the domain $G$ and the coefficients $a$ of the equation.
In this paper we study quasilinear elliptic equations driven by the double phase operator along with a reaction that has a singular and a parametric superlinear term and with a nonlinear Neumann boundary condition of critical growth. Based on a new equivalent norm for Musielak-Orlicz Sobolev spaces and the Nehari manifold along with the fibering method we prove the existence of at least two weak solutions provided the parameter is sufficiently small.
We consider a semilinear elliptic problem in an annulus of R^N, with N>1. Recent results ensure that there exists a sequence p_k of exponents of the nonlinear term at which a nonradial bifurcation from the radial solution occurs. Exploiting the properties of O(N-1)-invariant spherical harmonics, we introduce two suitable cones K^1 and $K^2$ of O(N-1)-invariant functions that allow to separate the branches of bifurcating solutions from the others, getting the unboundedness of these branches.
We revisit rescaling methods for nonlinear elliptic and parabolic problems and show that, by suitable modifications, they may be used for nonlinearities that are not scale invariant even asymptotically and whose behavior can be quite far from power like. In this enlarged framework, by adapting the doubling-rescaling method from [37, 38], we show that the equivalence found there between universal estimates and Liouville theorems remains valid. In the parabolic case we also prove a Liouville type theorem for a rather large class of non scale invariant nonlinearities. This leads to a number of ne…
Let $Γ$ denote a smooth simple curve in $\mathbb{R}^{N}$, $N\geq2$, possibly with boundary. Let $Ω_{R}$ be the open normal tubular neighborhood of radius 1 of the expanded curve $RΓ:=\{Rx\mid x\in Γ\smallsetminus\partialΓ\}$. Consider the superlinear problem $-Δu+λu=f(u)$ on the domains $Ω_{R}$, as $R\rightarrow \infty$, with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. We prove the existence of multibump solutions with bumps lined up along $RΓ$ with alternating signs. The function $f$ is superlinear at 0 and at $\infty$, but it is not assumed to be odd. If the boundary of the curve is nonempty o…
We provide the structure of regular/singular fast/slow decay radially symmetric solutions for a class of superlinear elliptic equations with an in- definite weight on the nonlinearity f (u, r). In particular we are interested in the case where f is positive in a ball and negative outside, or in the re- versed situation. We extend the approach to elliptic equations in presence of Hardy potentials. By the use of Fowler transformation we study the corresponding dynamical systems, presenting the construction of invariant manifolds when the global existence of solutions is not ensured.
We consider in this note one-side Liouville properties for viscosity solutions of various fully nonlinear uniformly elliptic inequalities, whose prototype is $F(x,D^2u)\geq H_i(x,u,Du)$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$, where $H_i$ has superlinear growth in the gradient variable. After a brief survey on the existing literature, we discuss the validity or the failure of the Liouville property in the model cases $H_1(u,Du)=u^q+|Du|^γ$, $H_2(u,Du)=u^q|Du|^γ$ and $H_3(x,u,Du)=\pm u^q|Du|^γ-b(x)\cdot Du$, where $q\geq0$, $γ>1$ and $b$ is a suitable velocity field. Several counterexamples and open problems are tho…
The existence and multiplicity of solutions for a class of non-local elliptic boundary value problems with superlinear source functions are investigated in this paper. Using variational methods, we examine the changes arise in the solution behaviours as a result of the non-local effect. Comparisons are made of the results here with those of the elliptic boundary value problem in the absence of the non-local term under the same prescribed conditions to highlight this effect of non-locality on the solution behaviours. Our results here demonstrate that the complexity of the solution structures is…
We present a variational framework for studying the existence and regularity of solutions to elliptic free boundary problems that do not necessarily minimize energy. As applications, we obtain mountain pass solutions of critical and subcritical superlinear free boundary problems, and establish full regularity of the free boundary in dimension $N = 2$ and partial regularity in higher dimensions.
We consider the following problem $ -Δ_{p}u= h(x,u) \mbox{ in }Ω$, $u\in W^{1,p}_{0}(Ω)$, where $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^{N}$, $1<p<N$, with a smooth boundary. In this paper we assume that $h(x,u)=a(x)f(u)+b(x)g(u)$ such that $f$ is regularly varying of index $p-1$ and superlinear at infinity. The function $g$ is a $p$-sublinear function at zero. The coefficients $a$ and $b$ belong to $L^{k}(Ω)$ for some $k>\frac{N}{p}$ and they are without sign condition. Firstly, we show a priori bound on solutions, then by using variational arguments, we prove the existence of at least two non…
In this paper, we consider the Hamiltonian elliptic system in dimension two\begin{equation}\label{1.5}\aligned \left\{ \begin{array}{lll} -ε^2Δu+V(x)u=g(v)\ & \text{in}\quad \mathbb{R}^2,\\ -ε^2Δv+V(x)v=f(u)\ & \text{in}\quad \mathbb{R}^2, \end{array}\right.\endaligned \end{equation} where $V\in C(\mathbb{R}^2)$ has local minimum points, and $f,g\in C^1(\mathbb{R})$ are assumed to be either superlinear or asymptotically linear at infinity and of subcritical exponential growth in the sense of Trudinger-Moser inequality. Under only a local condition on $V$, we obtain a family of semiclassical st…
We study the dependence of least nontrivial critical levels of the energy functional corresponding to the zero Dirichlet problem $-Δ_p u = f(u)$ in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ upon domain perturbations. Assuming that the nonlinearity $f$ is superlinear and subcritical, we establish Hadamard-type formulas for such critical levels. As an application, we show that among all (generally eccentric) spherical annuli $Ω$ least nontrivial critical levels attain maximum if and only if $Ω$ is concentric. As a consequence of this fact, we prove the nonradiality of least energy nodal solutions…
In this paper, based on some prior estimates, we show that the essential spectrum $λ=0$ is a bifurcation point for an superlinear elliptic equation with only local conditions, which generalizes a series of earlier results on an open problem proposed by C. A. Stuart in 1983 [Lecture Notes in Mathematics, 1017].
In this paper we study the problem -Δu =\left(\frac{2+α}{2}\right)^2\abs{x}^αf(λ,u), & \hbox{in}B_1 \\ u > 0, & \hbox{in}B_1 u = 0, & \hbox{on} \partial B_1 where $B_1$ is the unit ball of $\R^2$, $f$ is a smooth nonlinearity and $\a$, $ł$ are real numbers with $\a>0$. From a careful study of the linearized operator we compute the Morse index of some radial solutions to \eqref{i0}. Moreover, using the bifurcation theory, we prove the existence of branches of nonradial solutions for suitable values of the positive parameter $ł$. The case $f(λ,u)=łe^u$ provides more detailed information.
We consider a nonlinear elliptic Dirichlet equation driven by a nonlinear nonhomogeneous differential operator involving a Carathéodory reaction which is $(p-1)$-superlinear but does not satisfy the Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition. First we prove a three-solutions-theorem extending an earlier classical result of Wang (Ann. Inst. H. Poincaré Anal. Non Linéaire 8 (1991), no. 1, 43--57). Subsequently, by imposing additional conditions on the reaction $f(x,\cdot)$, we produce two more nontrivial constant sign solutions and a nodal solution for a total of five nontrivial solutions. In the special c…
