Symmetry plays a basic role in variational problems (settled e.g. in $\mathbb R^{n}$ or in a more general manifold), for example to deal with the lack of compactness which naturally appear when the problem is invariant under the action of a noncompact group. In $\mathbb R^n$, a compactness result for invariant functions with respect to a subgroup $G$ of $\mathrm{O}(n)$ has been proved under the condition that the $G$ action on $\mathbb R^n$ is compatible, see \cite{willem}. As a first result we generalize this and show here that the compactness is recovered for particular subgroups of the isometry group of a Riemannian manifold. We investigate also isometric action on Hadamard manifold $(M,g)$ proving that a large class of subgroups of $\mathrm{Iso}(M,g)$ is compatible. As an application we get a compactness result for ``invariant'' functions which allows us to prove the existence of nonradial solutions for a classical scalar equation and for a nonlocal fractional equation on $\mathbb R^n$ for $n=3$ and $n=5$, improving some results known in the literature. Finally, we prove the existence of nonradial invariant functions such that a compactness result holds for some symmetric spaces of non compact type.
In this article we consider the system of equations Δu_{i}=p_{i}(x)f_{i}(u_{1},...,u_{d}) for i=1,...,d on R^{N}, N\geq3 and d\in{1,2,3,4,...}. We prove that the considered system has a bounded positive entire solution under some conditions on p_{i} and f_{i}. Also, we give a necessary condition as well as a sufficient condition for a positive radial solution to be large. The method of proving theorems is essentially based on a successive approximation. Furthermore, a non-radially symmetric solution is obtained by using a lower and upper solution method.
Consider the focusing energy-critical wave equation in space dimension 3, 4 or 5. In a previous paper, we proved that any solution which is bounded in the energy space converges, along a sequence of times and in some weak sense, to a solution with the compactness property, that is a solution whose trajectory stays in a compact subset of the energy space up to space translation and scaling. It is conjectured that the only solutions with the compactness property are stationary solutions and solitary waves that are Lorentz transforms of the former. In this note we prove this conjecture with an ad…
In this paper we use a concentration and compactness argument to prove the existence of a nontrivial nonradial solution to the nonlinear Schrodinger-Poisson equations in R3, assuming on the nonlinearity the general hypotheses introduced by Berestycki & Lions
We consider a semilinear elliptic problem in an annulus of R^N, with N>1. Recent results ensure that there exists a sequence p_k of exponents of the nonlinear term at which a nonradial bifurcation from the radial solution occurs. Exploiting the properties of O(N-1)-invariant spherical harmonics, we introduce two suitable cones K^1 and $K^2$ of O(N-1)-invariant functions that allow to separate the branches of bifurcating solutions from the others, getting the unboundedness of these branches.
The concentration compactness framework for semilinear elliptic equations without compactness, set originally by P.-L.Lions for constrained minimization in the case of homogeneous nonlinearity, is extended here to the case of general nonlinearities in the standard mountain pass setting of Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz. In these setting, existence of solutions at the mountain pass level is verified under a single penalty condition analogous to that in the Lions' case. Problems on the whole space and problems with critical nonlinearity are considered. Particular attention is given to nonhomogeneous crit…
In the paper we prove the existence of probabilistic solutions to systems of the form $-Au=F(x,u)+μ$, where $F$ satisfies a generalized sign condition and $μ$ is a smooth measure. As for $A$ we assume that it is a generator of a Markov semigroup determined by a right Markov process whose resolvent is order compact on $L^1$. This class includes local and nonlocal operators corresponding to Dirichlet forms as well as some operators which are not in the variational form. To study the problem we introduce new concept of compactness property relating the underlying Markov process to almost everywhe…
In this paper we proceed with the multiscale analysis of semilinear damped stochastic wave motions. The analysis is made by combining the well-known sigma convergence method with its stochastic counterpart, associated to some compactness results such as the Prokhorov and Skorokhod theorems. We derive the equivalent model, which is of the same type as the micro-model.
We prove a Hopf bifurcation theorem in Hilbert spaces for abstract semilinear equations, which improves a classical result by Crandall and Rabinowitz in the case where basic spaces are Hilbert spaces. Actually, our theorem does not need any compactness conditions, which leads to wider applications. In particular, our theorem can be applied to semilinear equations in unbounded domains of $\mathbb{R}^n$.
We study the regularity of stable solutions to the problem $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{rcll} (-Δ)^s u &=& f(u) & \text{in} \quad B_1\,, u &\equiv&0 & \text{in} \quad \mathbb R^n\setminus B_1\,, \end{array} \right. $$ where $s\in(0,1)$. Our main result establishes an $L^\infty$ bound for stable and radially decreasing $H^s$ solutions to this problem in dimensions $2 \leq n < 2(s+2+\sqrt{2(s+1)})$. In particular, this estimate holds for all $s\in(0,1)$ in dimensions $2 \leq n\leq 6$. It applies to all nonlinearities $f\in C^2$. For such parameters $s$ and $n$, our result leads to the regularity of …
We prove existence of weak solutions to the obstacle problem for semilinear wave equations (including the fractional case) by using a suitable approximating scheme in the spirit of minimizing movements. This extends the results in [9], where the linear case was treated. In addition, we deduce some compactness properties of concentration sets (e.g. moving interfaces) when dealing with singular limits of certain nonlinear wave equations.
In the spirit of the classical work of P. H. Rabinowitz on nonlinear Schrödinger equations, we prove existence of mountain-pass solutions and least energy solutions to the nonlinear Schrödinger-Poisson system \begin{equation}\nonumber \left\{\begin{array}{lll} - Δu+ u + ρ(x) ϕu = |u|^{p-1} u, \qquad &x\in \mathbb R^3, \,\,\, -Δϕ=ρ(x) u^2,\ & x\in \mathbb R^3, \end{array} \right. \end{equation} under different assumptions on $ρ: \mathbb R^3\rightarrow \mathbb R_+$ at infinity. Our results cover the range $p\in(2,3)$ where the lack of compactness phenomena may be due to the combined effect of th…

We will show that in $\RR^{2+1}$ semilinear wave equations of the form $-\Box u = u Q(\del u; \del u)$ possess global-in-time solutions if the null condition on $Q(\del u; \del u)$ is assumed. As a consequence, we also provide a new proof, after \cite{Wong}, on the small data global solutions to the wave map equation in $\RR^{2+1}$ and no compactness assumptions on the initial data are needed.
In this paper, we study the semilinear elliptic equation of the form \begin{eqnarray*} -Δu+a(x)|u|^{p-2}u-b(x)|u|^{q-2}u=0 \end{eqnarray*} on lattice graphs $\mathbb{Z}^{N}$, where $N\geq 2$ and $2\leq p<q<+\infty$. By the Brézis-Lieb lemma and concentration compactness principle, we prove the existence of positive solutions to the above equation with constant coefficients $\bar{a},\bar{b}$ and the decomposition of bounded Palais-Smale sequences for the functional with variable coefficients, which tend to some constants $\bar{a},\bar{b}$ at infinity, respectively.
We show that all nonnegative solutions of the critical semilinear elliptic equation involving the regional fractional Laplacian are locally universally bounded. This strongly contrasts with the standard fractional Laplacian case. Second, we consider the fractional critical elliptic equations with nonnegative potentials. We prove compactness of solutions provided the potentials only have non-degenerate zeros. Corresponding to Schoen's Weyl tensor vanishing conjecture for the Yamabe equation on manifolds, we establish a Laplacian vanishing rate of the potentials at blow-up points of solutions.
{\bf Abstract} \,\,We prove exponential decay of the critical and subcritical semilinear inhomogeneous and anisotropic elastic wave equation with locally distributed damping on bounded domain. One novelty compared to previous results, is to give a checkable condition of the inhomogeneous and anisotropic medias. Another novelty is to establish a framework to study the stability of the damped semilinear inhomogeneous and anisotropic elastic wave equation, which is hard to apply Carleman estimates to deal with. We develop the Morawetz estimates and the compactness-uniqueness arguments for the sem…
Our purpose is to find positive solutions $u \in D^{1,2}(\rz^N)$ of the semilinear elliptic problem $-\laplace u = h(x) u^{p-1}$ for $2<p$. The function $h$ may have an indefinite sign. Key ingredients are a $h$-dependent concentration-compactness Lemma and a characterization of compact embeddings of $D^{1,2}(\rz^N)$ into weighted Lebesgue spaces.
In this paper, we prove the small-time global null-controllability of forward (resp. backward) semilinear stochastic parabolic equations with globally Lipschitz nonlinearities in the drift and diffusion terms (resp. in the drift term). In particular, we solve the open question posed by S. Tang and X. Zhang, in 2009. We propose a new twist on a classical strategy for controlling linear stochastic systems. By employing a new refined Carleman estimate, we obtain a controllability result in a weighted space for a linear system with source terms. The main novelty here is that the Carleman parameter…
In the paper we show that critical sequences associated with the mountain pass level for semilinear elliptic problems on $\R^N$ converge when the non-linearity is subcritical, superlinear and satisfies the penalty condition $F_\infty(s)<F(x,s)$. The proof suggests a concentration compactness framework for minimax problems, similar to that of P.-L.Lions for constrained minima.
We consider the energy-critical semilinear focusing wave equation in dimension $N=3,4,5$. An explicit solution $W$ of this equation is known. By the work of C. Kenig and F. Merle, any solution of initial condition $(u_0,u_1)$ such that $E(u_0,u_1)<E(W,0)$ and $\|\nabla u_0\|_{L^2}<\|\nabla W\|_{L^2}$ is defined globally and has finite $L^{\frac{2(N+1)}{N-2}}_{t,x}$-norm, which implies that it scatters. In this note, we show that the supremum of the $L^{\frac{2(N+1)}{N-2}}_{t,x}$-norm taken on all scattering solutions at a certain level of energy below $E(W,0)$ blows-up logarithmically as this …
It is established existence, multiplicity and asymptotic behavior of positive solutions for a quasilinear elliptic problem driven by the $Φ$-Laplacian operator. One of these solutions is obtained as ground state solution by applying the well known Nehari method. The semilinear term in the quasilinear equation is a concave-convex function which presents a critical behavior at infinity. The concentration compactness principle is used in order to recover the compactness required in variational methods.
We establish well-posedness in the mild sense for a class of stochastic semilinear evolution equations on $L_p$ spaces, driven by multiplicative Wiener noise, with a drift term given by an evaluation operator that is assumed to be quasi-monotone and polynomially growing, but not necessarily continuous. In particular, we consider a notion of mild solution ensuring that the evaluation operator applied to the solution is still function-valued, but satisfies only minimal integrability conditions. The proofs rely on stochastic calculus in Banach spaces, monotonicity and convexity techniques, and we…
The paper introduces a new way to construct dissipative solutions to a second order variational wave equation. By a variable transformation, from the nonlinear PDE one obtains a semilinear hyperbolic system with sources. In contrast with the conservative case, here the source terms are discontinuous and the discontinuities are not always crossed transversally. Solutions to the semilinear system are obtained by an approximation argument, relying on Kolmogorov's compactness theorem. Reverting to the original variables, one recovers a solution to the nonlinear wave equation where the total energy…
We consider the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation $\partial_t^2u(x,t)-\partial_x^2u(x,t)+αu(x,t)=\pm|u(x,t)|^{p-1}u(x,t)$ on a periodic metric graph (necklace graph) for $p>1$ with Kirchhoff conditions at the vertices. Under suitable assumptions on the frequency we prove the existence and regularity of infinitely many spatially localized time-periodic solutions (breathers) by variational methods. We compare our results with previous results obtained via spatial dynamics and center manifold techniques. Moreover, we deduce regularity properties of the solutions and show that they are weak solution…
We study the system of semilinear elliptic equations $$-Δu_i+ u_i = \sum_{j=1}^\ell β_{ij}|u_j|^p|u_i|^{p-2}u_i, \qquad u_i\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^N),\qquad i=1,\ldots,\ell,$$ where $N\geq 4$, $1<p<\frac{N}{N-2}$, and the matrix $(β_{ij})$ is symmetric and admits a block decomposition such that the entries within each block are positive or zero and all other entries are negative. We provide simple conditions on $(β_{ij})$, which guarantee the existence of fully nontrivial solutions, i.e., solutions all of whose components are nontrivial. We establish existence of fully nontrivial solutions to the s…
We study the existence of nontrivial solutions for a class of asymptotically periodic semilinear Schrödinger equations in $\mathbb{R}^N$. By combining variational methods and the concentration-compactness principle we obtain a nontrivial solution for asymptotically periodic problem and a ground state solution for the periodic problem. In the proofs we apply the Mountain Pass Theorem and its local version.
We prove the existence of ground state positive solutions for a class of semipositone $p$-Laplacian problems with a critical growth reaction term. The proofs are established by obtaining crucial uniform $C^{1,α}$ a priori estimates and by concentration compactness arguments. Our results are new even in the semilinear case $p = 2$.

In this paper, we first prove a uniform upper bound on costs of null controls for semilinear heat equations with globally Lipschitz nonlinearity on a sequence of increasing domains, where the controls are acted on an equidistributed set that spreads out in the whole Euclidean space R^N . As an application, we then show the exactly null controllability for this semilinear heat equation in R^N . The main novelty here is that the upper bound on costs of null controls for such kind of equations in large but bounded domains can be made uniformly with respect to the sizes of domains under considerat…
We prove existence and uniqueness of strong solutions for a class of semilinear stochastic evolution equations driven by general Hilbert space-valued semimartingales, with drift equal to the sum of a linear maximal monotone operator in variational form and of the superposition operator associated to a random time-dependent monotone function defined on the whole real line. Such a function is only assumed to satisfy a very mild symmetry-like condition, but its rate of growth towards infinity can be arbitrary. Moreover, the noise is of multiplicative type and can be path-dependent. The solution i…
We study a defocusing semilinear wave equation, with a power nonlinearity $|u|^{p-1}u$, defined outside the unit ball of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$, $n\ge3$, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We prove that if $p>n+4$ and the initial data are nonradial perturbations of large radial data, there exists a global smooth solution. The solution is unique among energy class solutions satisfying an energy inequality. The main tools used are the Penrose transform and a pointwise decay estimate for the exterior linear wave equation perturbed with a large, time dependent potential.
We prove the existence of a positive solution to a semipositone $N$-Laplacian problem with a critical Trudinger-Moser nonlinearity. The proof is based on obtaining uniform $C^{1,α}$ a priori estimates via a compactness argument. Our result is new even in the semilinear case $N = 2$, and our arguments can easily be adapted to obtain positive solutions of more general semipositone problems with critical Trudinger-Moser nonlinearities.
In the past few decades, much attention has been paid to the bubbling problem for semilinear Neumann elliptic equation with the critical and subcritical polynomial nonlinearity, much less is known if the polynomial nonlinearity is replaced by the exponential nonlinearity. In this paper, we consider the following semilinear Neumann elliptic problem with the Trudinger-Moser exponential growth: \begin{equation*}\begin{cases} -dΔu_d+u_d=u_d(e^{u^2_{d}}-1)\ \ \mbox{in}\ Ω,\\ \frac{\partial u_d}{\partialν}=0\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \mbox{on}\ \partial Ω,\\ \end{cases}\end{equa…
The existence of a random attractor in H^1(R^3) \times L^2(R^3) is proved for the damped semilinear stochastic wave equation defined on the entire space R^3. The nonlinearity is allowed to have a cubic growth rate which is referred to as the critical exponent. The uniform pullback estimates on the tails of solutions for large space variables are established. The pullback asymptotic compactness of the random dynamical system is proved by using these tail estimates and the energy equation method.
In this paper, the following problem in the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{B}^N$ will be considered \begin{equation*} -Δ_{\mathbb{B}^N} u=f(x,u), \mathrm{in} \ \mathbb{B}^N.\eqno{(1)} \end{equation*} where, $Δ_{\mathbb{B}^N}$ denotes the Laplace Beltrami operator on $\mathbb{B}^N$. And this problem can be converted into the following Euclidean problem \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -\operatorname{div}(K(x) \nabla u)=4 K(x)^{\frac{N}{N-2}}f(x,u), &\mathrm{in} \ \mathbb{B}^N, \\ u(0)=0, &\mathrm{on}\ \partial\mathbb{B}^N, \end{cases}\eqno{(2)} \end{equation*} where, $K(x):=1/\left(1-|x|^2\right)^{N-…
We present a rigorous convergence result for the smooth solutions to a singular semilinear hyperbolic approximation, a vector BGK model, to the solutions to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in Sobolev spaces. Our proof is based on the use of a constant right symmetrizer, weighted with respect to the parameter of the singular pertubation system. This symmetrizer provides a conservative-dissipative form for the system and this allow us to perform uniform energy estimates and to get the convergence by compactness.
In any dimension $N\geq1$ and for given mass $m>0$, we revisit the nonlinear scalar field equation with an $L^2$ constraint: $$ -Δu=f(u)-μu, \quad u \in H^1(\mathbb{R}^N) \quad \text{with} \quad \|u\|^2_{L^2(\mathbb{R}^N)}=m. $$ where $μ\in\mathbb{R}$ will arise as a Lagrange multiplier. Assuming only that the nonlinearity $f$ is continuous and satisfies weak mass supercritical conditions, we show the existence of ground states and reveal the basic behavior of the ground state energy $E_m$ as $m>0$ varies. In particular, to overcome the compactness issue when looking for ground states, we deve…
We study rotating wave solutions of the nonlinear wave equation $$ \left\{ \begin{aligned} \partial_{t}^2 v - Δv + m v & = |v|^{p-2} v \quad && \text{in $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbf{B}$} \\ v & = 0 && \text{on $\mathbb{R} \times \partial \mathbf{B}$} \end{aligned} \right. $$ where $2<p<\infty$, $m \in \mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbf{B} \subset \mathbb{R}^2$ denotes the unit disk. If the angular velocity $α$ of the rotation is larger than $1$, this leads to a semilinear boundary value problem on $\mathbf{B}$ involving a mixed-type operator, whose spectrum is related to the zeros of Bessel functions and …
We consider the periodic solutions of a semilinear variable coefficient wave equation arising from the forced vibrations of a nonhomogeneous string and the propagation of seismic waves in nonisotropic media. The variable coefficient characterizes the inhomogeneity of media and its presence usually leads to the destruction of the compactness of the inverse of linear wave operator with periodic-Dirichlet boundary conditions on its range. In the pioneering work of Barbu and Pavel (1997), it gives the existence and regularity of periodic solution for Lipschitz, nonresonant and monotone nonlinearit…
In this work we study the existence of nontrivial solution for the following class of semilinear degenerate elliptic equations $$ -Δ_γ u + a(z)u = f(u) ~~ \mbox{in} ~~ \mathbb{R}^{N}, $$ where $Δ_γ$ is known as the {\it Grushin operator}, $z:=(x,y)\in\mathbb{R}^{m}\times\mathbb{R}^{k}$ and $m+k=N\geq 3$, $f$ and $a$ are continuous function satisfying some technical conditions. In order to overcome some difficulties involving this type of operator, we have proved some compactness results that are crucial in the proof of our main results. For the case $a=1$, we have showed a Berestycki-Lions typ…
We are interested in the Klein-Gordon-Zakharov system in $\mathbb{R}^{1+2}$, which is an important model in plasma physics with extensive mathematical studies. The system can be regarded as semilinear coupled wave and Klein-Gordon equations with nonlinearities violating the null conditions. Without the compactness assumptions on the initial data, we aim to establish the existence of small global solutions, and in addition, we want to illustrate the optimal pointwise decay of the solutions. Furthermore, we show that the Klein-Gordon part of the system enjoys linear scattering while the wave par…
We study the Cauchy problem for a scalar semilinear degenerate parabolic partial differential equation with stochastic forcing. In particular, we are concerned with the well-posedness in any space dimension. We adapt the notion of kinetic solution which is well suited for degenerate parabolic problems and supplies a good technical framework to prove the comparison principle. The proof of existence is based on the vanishing viscosity method: the solution is obtained by a compactness argument as the limit of solutions of nondegenerate approximations.
We consider the semilinear elliptic problem \begin{equation}\label{problemAbstract} \left\{\begin{array}{lr}-Δu= |u|^{p-1}u\qquad \mbox{ in }B\\ u=0\qquad\qquad\qquad\mbox{ on }\partial B \end{array}\right.\tag{$\mathcal E_p$} \end{equation} where $B$ is the unit ball of $\mathbb R^2$ centered at the origin and $p\in (1,+\infty)$. We prove the existence of non-radial sign-changing solutions to \eqref{problemAbstract} which are \emph{quasi-radial}, namely solutions whose nodal line is the union of a finite number of disjoint simple closed curves, which are the boundary of nested domains contain…
Consider a sequence of $C^4$ Lorentzian metrics $\{h_n\}_{n=1}^{+\infty}$ on a manifold $\mathcal M$ satisfying the Einstein vacuum equation $\mathrm{Ric}(h_n)=0$. Suppose there exists a smooth Lorentzian metric $h_0$ on $\mathcal M$ such that $h_n\to h_0$ uniformly on compact sets. Assume also that on any compact set $K\subset \mathcal M$, there is a decreasing sequence of positive numbers $λ_n \to 0$ such that $$\|\partial^α (h_n - h_0)\|_{L^{\infty}(K)} \lesssim λ_n^{1-|α|},\quad |α|\geq 4.$$ It is well-known that $h_0$, which represents a "high-frequency limit", is not necessarily a soluti…
