In any dimension $N\geq1$ and for given mass $m>0$, we revisit the nonlinear scalar field equation with an $L^2$ constraint:
$$ -Δu=f(u)-μu, \quad u \in H^1(\mathbb{R}^N) \quad \text{with} \quad \|u\|^2_{L^2(\mathbb{R}^N)}=m. $$ where $μ\in\mathbb{R}$ will arise as a Lagrange multiplier. Assuming only that the nonlinearity $f$ is continuous and satisfies weak mass supercritical conditions, we show the existence of ground states and reveal the basic behavior of the ground state energy $E_m$ as $m>0$ varies. In particular, to overcome the compactness issue when looking for ground states, we develop robust arguments which we believe will allow treating other $L^2$ constrained problems in general mass supercritical settings. Under the same assumptions, we also obtain infinitely many radial solutions for any $N\geq2$ and establish the existence and multiplicity of nonradial sign-changing solutions when $N\geq4$. Finally we propose two open problems.
We give a comprehensive study of the analytic properties and long-time behavior of solutions of a reaction-diffusion system in a bounded domain in the case where the nonlinearity satisfies the standard monotonicity assumption. We pay the main attention to the supercritical case, where the nonlinearity is not subordinated to the linear part of the equation trying to put as small as possible amount of extra restrictions on this nonlinearity. The properties of such systems in the supercritical case may be very different in comparison with the standard case of subordinated nonlinearities. We exami…
We revisit the phenomenon of instability of solitons in the two dimensional generalization of the Korteweg-de Vries equation, the generalized Zakharov-Kuznetsov (ZK) equation, $u_t + \partial_{x_1} (Δu + u^p) = 0, (x_1,x_2) \in \mathbb R^2$. It is known that solitons are unstable in this two dimensional equation for nonlinearities $p > 3$. This was shown by Anne de Bouard in [4] generalizing the arguments of Bona-Souganidis-Strauss in [1] for the generalized KdV equation. In this paper, we use a different method to obtain the instability of solitons, namely, truncation and monotonicity propert…
In this paper, we revisit the Cauchy problem for the three dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a constant magnetic field. We first establish sufficient conditions that ensure the existence of global in time and finite time blow-up solutions. In particular, we derive sharp thresholds for global existence versus blow-up for the equation with mass-critical and mass-supercritical nonlinearities. We next prove the existence and orbital stability of normalized standing waves which extend the previous known results to the mass-critical and mass-supercritical cases. To show the existence o…
In this paper, we are concerned with solutions to the Cauchy problem for Chern-Simons-Schrödinger equations in the mass supercritical case. First we establish the local well-posedness of solutions in the radial space. Then we consider scattering versus blow-up dichotomy for radial data below the ground state threshold.
This paper is devoted to the existence of non-trivial bound states of prescribed mass for the mass-supercritical nonlinear Schrödinger equation on compact metric graphs. The investigation is based upon a general variational principle which combines the monotonicity trick and a min-max theorem with second order information, and upon the blow-up analysis of bound states with prescribed mass and bounded Morse index.
We investigate the existence of solutions to the fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation $(-Δ)^s u = f(u)$ with prescribed $L^2$-norm $\int_{\mathbb{R}^N} |u|^2 \, dx =m$ in the Sobolev space $H^s(\mathbb{R}^N)$. Under fairly general assumptions on the nonlinearity $f$, we prove the existence of a ground state solution and a multiplicity result in the radially symmetric case.
This paper is concerned with the existence of normalized solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation \[ -Δu+V(x)u+λu = |u|^{p-2}u \qquad\text{in $\mathbb{R}^N$} \] in the mass supercritical and Sobolev subcritical case $2+\frac{4}{N}<p<2^*$. We prove the existence of a solution $(u,λ)\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)\times\mathbb{R}^+$ with prescribed $L^2$-norm $\|u\|_2=ρ$ under various conditions on the potential $V:\mathbb{R}^N\to\mathbb{R}$, positive and vanishing at infinity, including potentials with singularities. The proof is based on a new min-max argument.
We consider the focusing $L^2$-supercritical fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation \[ i\partial_t u - (-Δ)^s u = -|u|^αu, \quad (t,x) \in \mathbb{R}^+ \times \mathbb{R}^d, \] where $d\geq 2, \frac{d}{2d-1} \leq s <1$ and $\frac{4s}{d}<α<\frac{4s}{d-2s}$. By means of the localized virial estimate, we prove that the ground state standing wave is strongly unstable by blow-up. This result is a complement to a recent result of Peng-Shi [J. Math. Phys. 59 (2018), 011508] where the stability and instability of standing waves were studied in the $L^2$-subcritical and $L^2$-critical cases.
We consider the nonlinear Choquard equation $$\begin{cases} & - Δu = (I_α\ast F(u))F'(u) -μu \ \text{in}\ \mathbb{R}^N, & u \in \ H^1(\mathbb{R}^N), \ \int_{\mathbb{R}^N} |u|^2 dx=m, \end{cases} $$ where $α\in(0,N)$, $m>0$ is prescribed, $μ\in \mathbb{R}$ is a Lagarange multiplier, and $I_α$ is the Riesz potential. Under general assumptions on the nonlinearity $F,$ we prove the existence and multiplicity of normalized solutions.
We consider radial solutions of a mass supercritical monic NLS and we prove the existence of a set, which looks like a hypersurface, in the space of finite energy functions, invariant for the flow and formed by solutions which converge to ground states.
In this paper, we deal with the existence and concentration of normalized solutions to the supercritical nonlinear Schrödinger equation \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{array}{l} -Δu + V(x) u = μ_q u + a|u|^q u \quad {\rm in}\quad \mathbb{R}^2,\\ \int_{\mathbb{R}^2}|u|^2\,dx =1,\\ \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} where $μ_q$ is the Lagrange multiplier. We show that for $q>2$ close to $2$, the equation admits two solutions: one is the local minimal solution $u_q$ and another one is the mountain pass solution $v_q$. Furthermore, we study the limiting behavior of $u_q$ and $v_q$ when $q\to 2_+…
For the one-dimensional mass-critical/supercritical pseudo-relativistic nonlinear Schrodinger equation, a stationary solution can be constructed as an energy minimizer under an additional kinetic energy constraint and the set of energy minimizers is orbitally stable in \cite{BGV}. In this study, we proved the local uniqueness and established the orbital stability of the solitary wave by improving that of the energy minimizer set. A key aspect thereof is the reformulation of the variational problem in the non-relativistic regime, which we consider to be more natural because the proof extensivel…
We study solutions of a semilinear elliptic equation with prescribed mass and Dirichlet homogeneous boundary conditions in the unitary ball. Such problem arises in the search of solitary wave solutions for nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NLS) with Sobolev subcritical power nonlinearity on bounded domains. Necessary and sufficient conditions are provided for the existence of such solutions. Moreover, we show that standing waves associated to least energy solutions are always orbitally stable when the nonlinearity is L^2-critical and subcritical, while they are almost always stable in the L^2-s…
We construct radially symmetric self-similar blow-up profiles for the mass supercritical nonlinear Schrödinger equation $i\partial_t u + Δu + |u|^{p-1}u=0$ on $\mathbf{R}^d$, close to the mass critical case and for any space dimension $d\ge 1$. These profiles bifurcate from the ground state solitary wave. The argument relies on the classical matched asymptotics method suggested in [Sulem, C.; Sulem, P.-L., The nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Self-focusing and wave collapse. Applied Mathematical Sciences, 139. Springer-Verlag, New York, 1999] which needs to be applied in a degenerate case due t…
In this paper, we study the existence of solutions to the mixed dispersion nonlinear Schrödinger equation $$ γΔ^2 u -Δu + αu=|u|^{2 σ} u, \quad u \in H^2(\R^N), $$ under the constraint $$ \int_{\R^N}|u|^2 \, dx =c>0. $$ We assume $γ>0, N \geq 1, 4 \leq σN < \frac{4N}{(N-4)^+}$, whereas the parameter $α\in \R$ will appear as a Lagrange multiplier. Given $c \in \R^+$, we consider several questions including the existence of ground states, of positive solutions and the multiplicity of radial solutions. We also discuss the stability of the standing waves of the associated dispersive equation.
In this paper, we study the existence of ground state solutions to the following p-Laplacian equation in some dimension $N\geq3$ with an $L^2$ constraint: \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -Δ_{p}u+{\vert u\vert}^{p-2}u=f(u)-μu \quad \text{ in } \mathbb{R}^N,\\ {\Vert u\Vert}^2_{L^2(\mathbb{R}^N)}=m,\\ u\in W^{1,p}(\mathbb{R}^N)\cap L^2(\mathbb{R}^N), \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $-Δ_{p}u=div\left( {\vert\nabla u\vert}^{p-2}\nabla u \right)$, $2\leq p<N$, $f\in C(\mathbb{R},\mathbb{R})$, $m>0$, $μ\in\mathbb{R}$ will appear as a Lagrange multiplier and the continuous nonlinearity $f$ satisfie…
We establish the existence of semiclassical states for a nonlinear Klein-Gordon-Maxwell-Proca system in static form, with Proca mass 1 on a closed Riemannian manifold. Our results include manifolds of arbitrary dimension and allow supercritical nonlinearities. In particular, we exhibit a large class of 3-dimensional manifolds on which the system has semiclassical solutions for every exponent p>2. The solutions we obtain concentrate at closed submanifolds of positive dimension as the singular perturbation parameter goes to zero
We study the existence of positive solutions with prescribed $L^2$-norm for the Schrödinger equation \[ -Δu-V(x)u+λu=|u|^{p-2}u\qquadλ\in \mathbb{R},\quad u\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^N), \] where $V\ge 0$, $N\ge 1$ and $p\in\left(2+\frac 4 N,2^*\right)$, $2^*:=\frac{2N}{N-2}$ if $N\ge 3$ and $2^*:=+\infty$ if $N=1,2$. We treat two cases. Firstly, under an explicit smallness assumption on $V$ and no condition on the mass, we prove the existence of a mountain pass solution at positive energy level, and we exclude the existence of solutions with negative energy. Secondly, requiring that the mass is small…
We consider a parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel type system, which is related to a simplified model of chemotaxis. Concerning the maximal range of existence of solutions, there are essentially two kinds of results: either global existence in time for general subcritical ($\|ρ_0\|_1<8π$) initial data, or blow--up in finite time for suitably chosen supercritical ($\|ρ_0\|_1>8π$) initial data with concentration around finitely many points. As a matter of fact there are no results claiming the existence of global solutions in the supercritical case. We solve this problem here and prove that, for a p…
Unboundedness of solutions is shown to occur in a one-dimensional quasilinear parabolicparabolic chemotaxis system for any initial mass. Our result is also independent of the relation between the speeds of the diffusion of cells and chemoattractant. The proof is achieved by contradiction. It uses a virial type inequality together with a boundedness from below of the Liapunov functional associated to the system. Moreover, the same method is applied also in higher dimensions and an unboundedness result is shown in the case of critical quasilinear fully parabolic Keller-Segel system for mass larg…
A class of equations with exponential nonlinearities on a compact Riemannian surface is considered. More precisely, we study an asymmetric sinh-Gordon problem arising as a mean field equation of the equilibrium turbulence of vortices with variable intensities. We start by performing a blow-up analysis in order to derive some information on the local blow-up masses. As a consequence we get a compactness property in a supercritical range. We next introduce a variational argument based on improved Moser-Trudinger inequalities which yields existence of solutions for any choice of the underlying su…
We consider the focusing mass supercritical nonlinear Schrödinger equation with rotation \begin{equation*} iu_{t}=-\frac{1}{2}Δu+\frac{1}{2}V(x)u-|u|^{p-1}u+L_Ωu,\quad (x,t)\in \mathbb{R}^{N}\times\mathbb{R}, \end{equation*} where $N=2$ or $3$ and $V(x)$ is an anisotropic harmonic potential. Here $L_Ω$ is the quantum mechanical angular momentum operator. We establish conditions for global existence and blow-up in the energy space. Moreover, we prove strong instability of standing waves under certain conditions on the rotation and the frequency of the wave. Finally, we construct orbitally stabl…
We study stable blow-up dynamics in the $L^2$-supercritical nonlinear Schrödinger equation in various dimensions. We first investigate the profile equation and extend the result of X.-P. Wang [38] and Budd et al. [4] on the existence and local uniqueness of solutions of the cubic profile equation to other $L^2$-supercritical nonlinearities and dimensions $d \geq 2$. We then numerically observe the multi-bump structure of such solutions, and in particular, exhibit the $Q_{1,0}$ solution, a candidate for the stable blow-up profile. Next, using the dynamic rescaling method, we investigate stable …
We consider a class of variational equations with exponential nonlinearities on a compact Riemannian surface, describing the mean field equation of the equilibrium turbulance with arbitrarily signed vortices. For the first time, we consider the problem with both supercritical parameters and we give an existence result by using variational methods. In doing this, we present a new Moser-Trudinger type inequality under suitable conditions on the center of mass and the scale of concentration of both e^u and e^{-u}, where u is the unknown function in the equation.
In this paper, we consider the defocusing mass-supercritical, energy-subcritical nonlinear Schrödinger equation, $$ i\partial_{t}u+Δu= |u|^p u, \quad (t,x)\in \mathbb R^{d+1}, $$ with $p\in (\frac4d,\frac4{d-2})$. We prove that under some restrictions on $d,p$, any radial function in the rough space $H^{s_0}(\mathbb R^d),\textit{for some } s_0<s_c$ with the support away from the origin, there exists an incoming/outgoing decomposition, such that the initial data in the outgoing part leads to the global well-posedness and scattering forward in time; while the initial data in the incoming part le…
