We consider the energy-critical semilinear focusing wave equation in dimension $N=3,4,5$. An explicit solution $W$ of this equation is known. By the work of C. Kenig and F. Merle, any solution of initial condition $(u_0,u_1)$ such that $E(u_0,u_1)<E(W,0)$ and $\|\nabla u_0\|_{L^2}<\|\nabla W\|_{L^2}$ is defined globally and has finite $L^{\frac{2(N+1)}{N-2}}_{t,x}$-norm, which implies that it scatters. In this note, we show that the supremum of the $L^{\frac{2(N+1)}{N-2}}_{t,x}$-norm taken on all scattering solutions at a certain level of energy below $E(W,0)$ blows-up logarithmically as this level approaches the critical value $E(W,0)$. We also give a similar result in the case of the radial energy-critical focusing semilinear Schrödinger equation. The proofs rely on the compactness argument of C. Kenig and F. Merle, on a classification result, due to the authors, at the energy level $E(W,0)$, and on the analysis of the linearized equation around $W$.
We consider the focusing mass supercritical semilinear Schrödinger equation with a repulsive Dirac delta potential on the real line (deltaNLS). Our aim in the present paper is to find a necessary and sufficient condition on the data below the standing wave of NLS without a potential to determine the global behavior of the solution. Moreover, we determine the global dynamics of the radial solution whose mass-energy is larger than that of the standing wave and smaller than that of the standing wave of deltaNLS.
We consider the quintic, focusing semilinear wave equation on $\mathbb{R}^{1+3}$, in the radially symmetric setting, and construct infinite time blow-up, relaxation, and intermediate types of solutions. More precisely, we first define an admissible class of time-dependent length scales, which includes a symbol class of functions. Then, we construct solutions which can be decomposed, for all sufficiently large time, into an Aubin-Talentini (soliton) solution, re-scaled by an admissible length scale, plus radiation (which solves the free 3 dimensional wave equation), plus corrections which decay…
We prove that in three space dimensions a nonlinear wave equation $u_{tt}-Δu = u^p$ with $p\geq 7$ being an odd integer has a countable family of regular spherically symmetric self-similar solutions.
In this paper we report on numerical studies of formation of singularities for the semilinear wave equations with a focusing power nonlinearity $u_{tt} - Δu = u^{p}$ in three space dimensions. We show that for generic large initial data that lead to singularities, the spatial pattern of blowup can be described in terms of linearized perturbations about the fundamental self-similar (homogeneous in space) solution. We consider also non-generic initial data which are fine-tuned to the threshold for blowup and identify critical solutions that separate blowup from dispersal for some values of the e…
The existence of ground states and (multiple) bound states to semilinear time-independent Maxwell and Schrödinger equations, with or without $L^2$-constraints, is investigated.
In this paper, we study the ill-posdness of the Cauchy problem for semilinear wave equation with very low regularity, where the nonlinear term depends on $u$ and $\partial_t u$. We prove a ill-posedness result for the "defocusing" case, and give an alternative proof for the supercritical "focusing" case, which improves our previous result in Chin. Ann. Math. Ser. B 26(3), 361-378, 2005.
We establish new bounds of the Sobolev norms of solutions of semilinear wave equations for data lying in the Hs, s<1, closure of compactly supported data inside a ball of radius R, with R a fixed and positive number. In order to do that we perform an analysis in the neighborhood of the cone, using an almost Shatah-Struwe estimate, an almost conservation law and some estimates for localized functions: this allows to prove a decay estimate and establish a low frequency estimate of the position of the solution. Then, in order to establish a high frequency estimate of the position and an estimate …
In this paper we extend the interior regularity results for stable solutions in [Cabré, Figalli, Ros-Oton, and Serra, Acta Math. 224 (2020)] to operators with variable coefficients. We show that stable solutions to the semilinear elliptic equation $a_{ij}(x)u_{ij} + b_i(x) u_i + f(u) = 0$ are Hölder continuous in the optimal range of dimensions $n \leq 9$. Our bounds are independent of the nonlinearity $f \in C^1$, which we assume to be non-negative. The main achievement of our work is to make the constants in our estimates depend on the $C^1$ norm of $a_{ij}$ and the $C^0$ norm of $b_i$, inst…
In the present paper, we study the normalized solutions with least energy to the following system: $$\begin{cases} -Δu+λ_1u=μ_1 |u|^{p-2}u+βr_1|u|^{r_1-2}|v|^{r_2}u\quad &\hbox{in}\;\mathbb R^N,\\ -Δv+λ_2v=μ_2 |v|^{q-2}v+βr_2|u|^{r_1}|v|^{r_2-2}v\quad&\hbox{in}\;\mathbb R^N,\\ \int_{\mathbb R^N}u^2=a_1^2\quad\hbox{and}\;\int_{\mathbb R^N}v^2=a_2^2, \end{cases}$$ where $p,q,r_1+r_2$ can be Sobolev critical. To this purpose, we study the geometry of the Pohozaev manifold and the associated minimizition problem. Under some assumption on $a_1,a_2$ and $β$, we obtain the existence of the positive n…
In this paper we study the global exponential stability in the $L^{2}$ norm of semilinear $1$-$d$ hyperbolic systems on a bounded domain, when the source term and the nonlinear boundary conditions are Lipschitz. We exhibit two sufficient stability conditions: an internal condition and a boundary condition. This result holds also when the source term is nonlocal. Finally, we show its robustness by extending it to global Input-to State Stability in the $L^{2}$ norm with respect to both interior and boundary disturbances.
We discuss gain of analyticity phenomenon of solutions to the initial value problem for semilinear Schroedinger equations with gauge invariant nonlinearity. We prove that if the initial data decays exponentially, then the solution becomes real-analytic in the space variable and a Gevrey function of order 2 in the time variable except in the initial plane. Our proof is based on the energy estimates developed in our previous work and on fine summation formulae concerned with a matrix norm.
In this paper we give a unified proof to the soliton resolution conjecture along a sequence of times, for the semilinear focusing energy critical wave equations in the radial case and two dimensional equivariant wave map equations, including the four dimensional radial Yang Mills equation, without using outer energy type inequalities. Such inequalities have played a crucial role in previous works with similar results. Roughly speaking, we prove that along a sequence of times approaching the maximal time of existence, the solution decouples to a sum of rescaled solitons and a term vanishing in …
We investigate the initial value problem for a semilinear heat equation with exponential-growth nonlinearity in two space dimension. First, we prove the local existence and unconditional uniqueness of solutions in the Sobolev space $H^1(\R^2)$. The uniqueness part is non trivial although it follows Brezis-Cazenave's proof \cite{Br} in the case of monomial nonlinearity in dimension $d\geq3$. Next, %Following Caffarelli-Vasseur \cite{cv}, we show that in the defocusing case our solution is bounded, and therefore exists for all time. In the focusing case, we prove that any solution with negative …
We consider the semilinear harmonic oscillator $$iψ_t=(-Δ+\va{x}^{2} +M)ψ+\partial_2 g(ψ,\bar ψ), \quad x\in \R^d, t\in \R$$ where $M$ is a Hermite multiplier and $g$ a smooth function globally of order 3 at least. We prove that such a Hamiltonian equation admits, in a neighborhood of the origin, a Birkhoff normal form at any order and that, under generic conditions on $M$ related to the non resonance of the linear part, this normal form is integrable when $d=1$ and gives rise to simple (in particular bounded) dynamics when $d\geq 2$. As a consequence we prove the almost global existence for s…
In this paper we consider a multi-dimensional damped semiliear wave equation with dynamic boundary conditions, related to the Kelvin-Voigt damping. We firstly prove the local existence by using the Faedo-Galerkin approximations combined with a contraction mapping theorem. Secondly, the exponential growth of the energy and the $L^p$ norm of the solution is presented.
We prove nonlinear stability of the fundamental self--similar solution of the wave equation with a focusing power nonlinearity $ψ_{tt}-Δψ=ψ^p$ for $p=3,5,7,...$ in the radial case. The proof is based on a semigroup formulation of the wave equation in similarity coordinates.
In this paper we study several semilinear damped wave equations with "subcritical" nonlinearities, focusing on demonstrating lifespan estimates for energy solutions. Our main concern is on equations with scale-invariant damping and mass. Under different assumptions imposed on the initial data, lifespan estimates from above are clearly showed. The key fact is that we find "transition surfaces", which distinguish lifespan estimates between "wave-like" and "heat-like" behaviours. Moreover we conjecture that the lifespan estimates on the "transition surfaces" can be logarithmically improved. As di…
We consider a vector-valued blow-up solution with values in $\mathbb{R}^m$ for the semilinear wave equation with power nonlinearity in one space dimension (this is a system of PDEs). We first characterize all the solutions of the associated stationary problem as an m-parameter family. Then, we show that the solution in self-similar variables approaches some particular stationary one in the energy norm, in the non-characteristic cases. Our analysis is not just a simple adaptation of the already handled real or complex case. In particular, there is a new structure of the set a stationary solutio…
In this paper, we consider a blow-up solution for the complex-valued semilinear wave equation with power nonlinearity in one space dimension. We first characterize all the solutions of the associated stationary problem as a two-parameter family. Then, we use a dynamical system formulation to show that the solution in self-similar variables approaches some particular stationary one in the energy norm, in the non-characteristic case. This gives the blow-up profile for the original equation in the non-characteristic case. Our analysis is not just a simple adaptation of the already handled real ca…
This dissertation describes the space of heteroclinic orbits for a class of semilinear parabolic equations, focusing primarily on the case where the nonlinearity is a second degree polynomial with variable coefficients. Along the way, a new and elementary proof of existence and uniqueness of solutions is given. Heteroclinic orbits are shown to be characterized by a particular functional being finite. A novel asymptotic-numeric matching scheme is used to uncover delicate bifurcation behavior in the equilibria. The exact nature of this bifurcation behavior leads to a demonstration that the equil…
Here we show a hidden regularity result for nonlinear wave equations with an integral term of convolution type and Dirichlet boundary conditions. Under general assumptions on the nonlinear term and on the integral kernel we are able to state results about global existence of strong and mild solutions without any further smallness on the initial data. Then we define the trace of the normal derivative of the solution showing a regularity result. In such a way we extend to integrodifferential equations with nonlinear term well-known results available in the literature for linear wave equations wi…
We investigate the decay for $|x|\rightarrow \infty$ of weak Sobolev type solutions of semilinear nonlocal equations $Pu=F(u)$. We consider the case when $P=p(D)$ is an elliptic Fourier multiplier with polyhomogeneous symbol $p(ξ)$ and derive sharp algebraic decay estimates in terms of weighted Sobolev norms. In particular, we state a precise relation between the singularity of the symbol at the origin and the rate of decay of the corresponding solutions. Our basic example is the celebrated Benjamin-Ono equation {equation} \label{BO}(|D|+c)u=u^2, \qquad c>0,{equation} for internal solitary wav…
We prove the existence of global solutions to the focusing energy-supercritical semilinear wave equation in R^{3+1} for arbitrary outgoing large initial data, after we modify the equation by projecting the nonlinearity on outgoing states.
In this paper, we consider the global Cauchy problem for the $L^2$-critical semilinear heat equations $ \partial_t h=Δh\pm |h|^{\frac4d}h, $ with $h(0,x)=h_0$, where $h$ is an unknown real function defined on $ \R^+\times\R^d$. In most of the studies on this subject, the initial data $h_0$ belongs to Lebesgue spaces $L^p(\R^d)$ for some $p\ge 2$ or to subcritical Sobolev space $H^{s}(\R^d)$ with $s>0$. {\it First,} we prove that there exists some positive constant $γ_0$ depending on $d$, such that the Cauchy problem is locally and globally well-posed for any initial data $h_0$ which is radial,…
Let $Ω$ be a bounded smooth domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$. We study positive solutions of equation (E) $-L_μu+ u^q = 0$ in $Ω$ where $L_μ=Δ+ \fracμ{δ^2}$, $0<μ$, $q>1$ and $δ(x)=\mathrm{dist}\,(x,\partialΩ)$. A positive solution of (E) is moderate if it is dominated by an $L_μ$-harmonic function. If $μ<C_H(Ω)$ (the Hardy constant for $Ω$) every positive $L_μ$- harmonic functions can be represented in terms of a finite measure on $\partialΩ$ via the Martin representation theorem. However the classical measure boundary trace of any such solution is zero. We introduce a notion of normalized boundary t…
For a domain $Ω\subset\dR^N$ we consider the equation $ -Δu + V(x)u = Q_n(x)\abs{u}^{p-2}u$ with zero Dirichlet boundary conditions and $p\in(2,2^*)$. Here $V\ge 0$ and $Q_n$ are bounded functions that are positive in a region contained in $Ω$ and negative outside, and such that the sets $\{Q_n>0\}$ shrink to a point $x_0\inΩ$ as $n\to\infty$. We show that if $u_n$ is a nontrivial solution corresponding to $Q_n$, then the sequence $(u_n)$ concentrates at $x_0$ with respect to the $H^1$ and certain $L^q$-norms. We also show that if the sets $\{Q_n>0\}$ shrink to two points and $u_n$ are ground …
We examine solutions to semilinear wave equations on black hole backgrounds and give a proof of an analog of the blow up part of the John theorem, with $F_p(u)=|u|^{p}$, on the Schwarzschild and Kerr black hole backgrounds. Concerning the case of Schwarzschild, we construct a class of small data, so that the solution blows up along the outgoing null cone, which applies for both $F_p(u)=|u|^{p}$ and the focusing nonlinearity $F_p(u)=|u|^{p-1}u$. The proof suggests that the black hole does not have any essential influence on the formation of singularity, in the region away from the Cauchy horizo…
We study semilinear elliptic equations with Hardy potential $\mathrm{(E)} \; -L_μu+u^q=0$ in a bounded smooth domain $Ω\subset \mathbb R^N$. Here $q>1$, $L_μ=Δ+\fracμ{δ_Ω^2}$ and $δ_Ω(x)=\mathrm{dist}(x,\partialΩ)$. Assuming that $0\leq μ<C_H(Ω)$, boundary value problems with measure data and discrete boundary singularities for positive solutions of $\mathrm{(E)}$ have been studied earlier. In the present paper we study these problems, in arbitrary domains, assuming only $-\infty<μ<1/4$, even if $C_H(Ω)<1/4$. We recall that $C_H(Ω)\leq 1/4$ and, in general, strict inequality holds. The key to …
Consider a finite energy radial solution to the focusing energy critical semilinear wave equation in 1+4 dimensions. Assume that this solution exhibits type-II behavior, by which we mean that the critical Sobolev norm of the evolution stays bounded on the maximal interval of existence. We prove that along a sequence of times tending to the maximal forward time of existence, the solution decomposes into a sum of dynamically rescaled solitons, a free radiation term, and an error tending to zero in the energy space. If, in addition, we assume that the critical norm of the evolution localized to t…
In this paper we prove the following long-standing conjecture: stable solutions to semilinear elliptic equations are bounded (and thus smooth) in dimension $n \leq 9$. This result, that was only known to be true for $n\leq4$, is optimal: $\log(1/|x|^2)$ is a $W^{1,2}$ singular stable solution for $n\geq10$. The proof of this conjecture is a consequence of a new universal estimate: we prove that, in dimension $n \leq 9$, stable solutions are bounded in terms only of their $L^1$ norm, independently of the nonlinearity. In addition, in every dimension we establish a higher integrability result fo…
We find solutions $E:Ω\to\mathbb{R}^3$ of the problem \[ \left\{\begin{aligned} &\nabla\times(\nabla\times E) + λE = \partial_E F(x,E) &&\quad \text{in}Ω\\ &ν\times E = 0 &&\quad \text{on}\partialΩ\end{aligned} \right. \] on a simply connected, smooth, bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^3$ with connected boundary and exterior normal $ν:\partialΩ\to\mathbb{R}^3$. Here $\nabla\times$ denotes the curl operator in $\mathbb{R}^3$, the nonlinearity $F:Ω\times\mathbb{R}^3\to\mathbb{R}$ is superquadratic and subcritical in $E$. The model nonlinearity is of the form $F(x,E)=Γ(x)|E|^p$ for $Γ\in L^\inft…
