The concentration compactness framework for semilinear elliptic equations without compactness, set originally by P.-L.Lions for constrained minimization in the case of homogeneous nonlinearity, is extended here to the case of general nonlinearities in the standard mountain pass setting of Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz. In these setting, existence of solutions at the mountain pass level is verified under a single penalty condition analogous to that in the Lions' case. Problems on the whole space and problems with critical nonlinearity are considered. Particular attention is given to nonhomogeneous critical nonlinearities that oscillate about the "critical stem".
In the paper we show that critical sequences associated with the mountain pass level for semilinear elliptic problems on $\R^N$ converge when the non-linearity is subcritical, superlinear and satisfies the penalty condition $F_\infty(s)<F(x,s)$. The proof suggests a concentration compactness framework for minimax problems, similar to that of P.-L.Lions for constrained minima.
Solutions of the stationary semilinear Cahn--Hilliard equation -Δ^2 u - u -Δ(|u|^{p-1}u)=0 in R^N, with p>1, which are exponentially decaying at infinity, are studied. Using the Mounting Pass Lemma allows us the determination of two different solutions. On the other hand, the application of Lusternik--Schnirel'man (L--S) Category Theory shows the existence of, at least, a countable family of solutions. However, through numerical methods it is shown that the whole set of solutions, even in 1D, is much wider. This suggests that, actually, there exists, at least, a countable set of countable fami…
The aim of this paper is to study a concentration-compactness principle for inhomogeneous fractional Sobolev space $H^s (\mathbb{R}^N)$ for $0<s\leq N/2.$ As an application we establish Palais-Smale compactness for the Lagrangian associated to the fractional Schrödinger equation $(-Δ)^{s} u + a(x)u= f(x,u)$ for $0<s<1.$ Moreover, we prove the existence of nontrivial nonnegative solutions to this class of elliptic equations for a wide class of possible singular potentials $a(x)$; not necessarily bounded away from zero. We consider possible oscillatory nonlinearities and that may not satisfy the…
Our purpose is to find positive solutions $u \in D^{1,2}(\rz^N)$ of the semilinear elliptic problem $-\laplace u = h(x) u^{p-1}$ for $2<p$. The function $h$ may have an indefinite sign. Key ingredients are a $h$-dependent concentration-compactness Lemma and a characterization of compact embeddings of $D^{1,2}(\rz^N)$ into weighted Lebesgue spaces.
Symmetry plays a basic role in variational problems (settled e.g. in $\mathbb R^{n}$ or in a more general manifold), for example to deal with the lack of compactness which naturally appear when the problem is invariant under the action of a noncompact group. In $\mathbb R^n$, a compactness result for invariant functions with respect to a subgroup $G$ of $\mathrm{O}(n)$ has been proved under the condition that the $G$ action on $\mathbb R^n$ is compatible, see \cite{willem}. As a first result we generalize this and show here that the compactness is recovered for particular subgroups of the isom…
In the paper we prove the existence of probabilistic solutions to systems of the form $-Au=F(x,u)+μ$, where $F$ satisfies a generalized sign condition and $μ$ is a smooth measure. As for $A$ we assume that it is a generator of a Markov semigroup determined by a right Markov process whose resolvent is order compact on $L^1$. This class includes local and nonlocal operators corresponding to Dirichlet forms as well as some operators which are not in the variational form. To study the problem we introduce new concept of compactness property relating the underlying Markov process to almost everywhe…
We prove existence of weak solutions to the obstacle problem for semilinear wave equations (including the fractional case) by using a suitable approximating scheme in the spirit of minimizing movements. This extends the results in [9], where the linear case was treated. In addition, we deduce some compactness properties of concentration sets (e.g. moving interfaces) when dealing with singular limits of certain nonlinear wave equations.
We study the existence and non-existence of nontrivial weak solution of $$ {Δ^2u-μ\frac{u}{|x|^{4}} = \frac{|u|^{q_β-2}u}{|x|^β}+|u|^{q-2}u\quad\textrm{in ${\mathbb R}^N$,}} $$ where $N\geq 5$, $q_β=\frac{2(N-β)}{N-4}$, $0<β<4$, $1<q\leq 2^{**}$ and $μ<μ_1:=\big(\frac{N(N-4)}{4}\big)^2$. Using Pohozaev type of identity, we prove the non-existence result when $1<q< 2^{**}$. On the other hand when the equation has multiple critical nonlinearities i.e. $q=2^{**}$ and $-(N-2)^2\leqμ<μ_1$, we establish the existence of nontrivial solution using the Mountain-Pass theorem by Ambrosetti and Rabinowitz…
In this paper, we study the following elliptic problem with Dirac mass \begin{equation}\label{eq 0.1} -Δu=Vu^p+k δ_0\quad {\rm in}\quad \mathbb{R}^N, \qquad \lim_{|x|\to+\infty}u(x)=0, \end{equation} where $N>2$, $p>0$, $k>0$, $δ_0$ is Dirac mass at the origin, the function $V$ is a locally Lipchitz continuous in $\mathbb{R}^N\setminus\{0\}$ satisfying $$ V(x)\le \frac{c_1}{|x|^{a_0}(1+|x|^{a_\infty-a_0})} $$ with $a_0<N,\ a_\infty>a_0 $ and $c_1>0$. We obtain two positive solutions of (\ref{eq 0.1}) with additional conditions for parameters on $a_\infty, a_0$, $p$ and $k$. The first solution …
We study the following Kirchhoff equation $$- \left(1 + b \int_{\mathbb{R}^3} |\nabla u|^2 dx \right) Δu + V(x) u = f(x,u), \ x \in \mathbb{R}^3.$$ A special feature of this paper is that the nonlinearity $f$ and the potential $V$ are indefinite, hence sign-changing. Under some appropriate assumptions on $V$ and $f$, we prove the existence of two different solutions of the equation via the Ekeland variational principle and Mountain Pass Theorem.
In this paper, we study the semilinear elliptic equation of the form \begin{eqnarray*} -Δu+a(x)|u|^{p-2}u-b(x)|u|^{q-2}u=0 \end{eqnarray*} on lattice graphs $\mathbb{Z}^{N}$, where $N\geq 2$ and $2\leq p<q<+\infty$. By the Brézis-Lieb lemma and concentration compactness principle, we prove the existence of positive solutions to the above equation with constant coefficients $\bar{a},\bar{b}$ and the decomposition of bounded Palais-Smale sequences for the functional with variable coefficients, which tend to some constants $\bar{a},\bar{b}$ at infinity, respectively.
We show that all nonnegative solutions of the critical semilinear elliptic equation involving the regional fractional Laplacian are locally universally bounded. This strongly contrasts with the standard fractional Laplacian case. Second, we consider the fractional critical elliptic equations with nonnegative potentials. We prove compactness of solutions provided the potentials only have non-degenerate zeros. Corresponding to Schoen's Weyl tensor vanishing conjecture for the Yamabe equation on manifolds, we establish a Laplacian vanishing rate of the potentials at blow-up points of solutions.
{\bf Abstract} \,\,We prove exponential decay of the critical and subcritical semilinear inhomogeneous and anisotropic elastic wave equation with locally distributed damping on bounded domain. One novelty compared to previous results, is to give a checkable condition of the inhomogeneous and anisotropic medias. Another novelty is to establish a framework to study the stability of the damped semilinear inhomogeneous and anisotropic elastic wave equation, which is hard to apply Carleman estimates to deal with. We develop the Morawetz estimates and the compactness-uniqueness arguments for the sem…
We consider the following nonlinear singular elliptic equation $$-{div} (|x|^{-2a}\nabla u)=K(x)|x|^{-bp}|u|^{p-2}u+\la g(x) \quad{in} \RR^N,$$ where $g$ belongs to an appropriate weighted Sobolev space, and $p$ denotes the Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg critical exponent associated to $a$, $b$, and $N$. Under some natural assumptions on the positive potential $K(x)$ we establish the existence of some $\la\_0>0$ such that the above problem has at least two distinct solutions provided that $\la\in(0,\la\_0)$. The proof relies on Ekeland's Variational Principle and on the Mountain Pass Theorem withou…
We study the existence of nontrivial solutions for a class of asymptotically periodic semilinear Schrödinger equations in $\mathbb{R}^N$. By combining variational methods and the concentration-compactness principle we obtain a nontrivial solution for asymptotically periodic problem and a ground state solution for the periodic problem. In the proofs we apply the Mountain Pass Theorem and its local version.
In this paper we consider the nonlinear Choquard equation $$ -Δu+V(x)u =\left(\int_{\mathbb{R}^N}\frac{G(y,u)}{|x-y|^μ}dy\right)g(x,u)\hspace{4.14mm}\mbox{in}\hspace{1.14mm} \mathbb{R}^N, $$ where $0<μ<N$, $N\geq3$, $g(x,u)$ is of critical growth due to the Hardy--Littlewood--Sobolev inequality and $G(x,u)=\displaystyle\int^u_0g(x,s)ds$. Firstly, by assuming that the potential $V(x)$ might be sign-changing, we study the existence of Mountain-Pass solution via a concentration-compactness principle for the Choquard equation. Secondly, under the conditions introduced by Benci and Cerami \cite{BC1…
Our purpose is to find positive solutions $u \in D^{1,2}(\rz^N)$ of the semilinear elliptic problem $-\laplace u - λV(x) u = h(x) u^{p-1}$ for $2<p$. The functions $V$ and $h$ may have an indefinite sign and the linearized operator need not to have a first (principal) eigenvalue, e.g. we allow $V\equiv 1$. We give precise existence and nonexistence criteria, which depend on $λ$ and on the growth of $h^{-}$ and $h^{+}/V^+$. Existence theorems are obtained by constrained minimization. The mountain pass theorem leads to a second solution.
We study solutions of $Δu - F'(u)=0$, where the potential $F$ can have an arbitrary number of wells at arbitrary heights, including bottomless wells with subcritical decay. In our setting, ground state solutions correspond to unstable solutions of least energy. We show that in convex domains of $\mathbb{R}^N$ and manifolds with $\operatorname{Ric}\geq 0$, ground states are always of mountain-pass type and have Morse index 1. In addition, we prove symmetry of the ground states if the domain is either an Euclidean ball or the entire sphere $S^{N}$. For the Allen-Cahn equation $\varepsilon^2Δu - …
Infinitely many solutions for $p$-fractional Choquard type equations involving general nonlocal nonlinearities with critical growth via the concentration compactness method
We consider the energy-critical semilinear focusing wave equation in dimension $N=3,4,5$. An explicit solution $W$ of this equation is known. By the work of C. Kenig and F. Merle, any solution of initial condition $(u_0,u_1)$ such that $E(u_0,u_1)<E(W,0)$ and $\|\nabla u_0\|_{L^2}<\|\nabla W\|_{L^2}$ is defined globally and has finite $L^{\frac{2(N+1)}{N-2}}_{t,x}$-norm, which implies that it scatters. In this note, we show that the supremum of the $L^{\frac{2(N+1)}{N-2}}_{t,x}$-norm taken on all scattering solutions at a certain level of energy below $E(W,0)$ blows-up logarithmically as this …
It is established existence, multiplicity and asymptotic behavior of positive solutions for a quasilinear elliptic problem driven by the $Φ$-Laplacian operator. One of these solutions is obtained as ground state solution by applying the well known Nehari method. The semilinear term in the quasilinear equation is a concave-convex function which presents a critical behavior at infinity. The concentration compactness principle is used in order to recover the compactness required in variational methods.
Existence and regularity of minimizers in elliptic free boundary problems have been extensively studied in the literature. The corresponding study of higher critical points was recently initiated in Jerison and Perera [30, 31]. In particular, the existence and nondegeneracy of a mountain pass point in a superlinear and subcritical free boundary problem related to plasma confinement was proved in [30]. In this paper we study ground states of a critical free boundary problem related to the Brezis-Nirenberg problem [5]. We extend the results of [30] to this problem by combining the method introdu…
In this paper we study the existence problem for the $p(x)-$Laplacian operator with a nonlinear critical source. We find a local condition on the exponents ensuring the existence of a nontrivial solution that shows that the Pohozaev obstruction does not holds in general in the variable exponent setting. The proof relies on the Concentration--Compactness Principle for variable exponents and the Mountain Pass Theorem.
We prove the existence of ground state positive solutions for a class of semipositone $p$-Laplacian problems with a critical growth reaction term. The proofs are established by obtaining crucial uniform $C^{1,α}$ a priori estimates and by concentration compactness arguments. Our results are new even in the semilinear case $p = 2$.
In this paper we establish the existence of mountain pass and negative energy weak solutions for a Kirchhoff-Schrödinger type problem in $\mathbb R^4$ involving a critical nonlinearity and a suitable small perturbation. The arisen competition between the terms due to the nonlocal coefficient and critical nonlinearity turns out to be rather interesting. The main tools used in the present work are variational methods and the Lions' Concentration Compactness Principle.
We prove the existence of a positive solution to a semipositone $N$-Laplacian problem with a critical Trudinger-Moser nonlinearity. The proof is based on obtaining uniform $C^{1,α}$ a priori estimates via a compactness argument. Our result is new even in the semilinear case $N = 2$, and our arguments can easily be adapted to obtain positive solutions of more general semipositone problems with critical Trudinger-Moser nonlinearities.
We consider the periodic solutions of a semilinear variable coefficient wave equation arising from the forced vibrations of a nonhomogeneous string and the propagation of seismic waves in nonisotropic media. The variable coefficient characterizes the inhomogeneity of media and its presence usually leads to the destruction of the compactness of the inverse of linear wave operator with periodic-Dirichlet boundary conditions on its range. In the pioneering work of Barbu and Pavel (1997), it gives the existence and regularity of periodic solution for Lipschitz, nonresonant and monotone nonlinearit…
We study the following nonlinear and nonlocal elliptic equation in~$\R^n$ $$ (-Δ)^s u = ε\,h\,u^q + u^p \ {\mbox{ in }}\R^n, $$ where~$s\in(0,1)$, $n>2s$, $ε>0$ is a small parameter, $p=\frac{n+2s}{n-2s}$, $q\in(0,1)$, and~$h\in L^1(\R^n)\cap L^\infty(\R^n)$. The problem has a variational structure, and this allows us to find a positive solution by looking at critical points of a suitable energy functional. In particular, in this paper, we find a local minimum and a mountain pass solution of this functional. One of the crucial ingredient is a Concentration-Compactness principle. Some difficult…
In the past few decades, much attention has been paid to the bubbling problem for semilinear Neumann elliptic equation with the critical and subcritical polynomial nonlinearity, much less is known if the polynomial nonlinearity is replaced by the exponential nonlinearity. In this paper, we consider the following semilinear Neumann elliptic problem with the Trudinger-Moser exponential growth: \begin{equation*}\begin{cases} -dΔu_d+u_d=u_d(e^{u^2_{d}}-1)\ \ \mbox{in}\ Ω,\\ \frac{\partial u_d}{\partialν}=0\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \mbox{on}\ \partial Ω,\\ \end{cases}\end{equa…
In this paper we prove the existence of a positive solution of the nonlinear and nonlocal elliptic equation in $\mathbb{R}^n$ \[ (-Δ)^s u =\varepsilon h u^q+u^{2_s^*-1} \] in the convex case $1\leq q<2_s^*-1$, where $ 2_s^*={2n}/({n-2s}) $ is the critical fractional Sobolev exponent, $(-Δ)^s$ is the fractional Laplace operator, $\varepsilon$ is a small parameter and $h$ is a given bounded, integrable function. The problem has a variational structure and we prove the existence of a solution by using the classical Mountain-Pass Theorem. We work here with the harmonic extension of the fractional …
In this article we investigate the existence of a solution to a semilinear, elliptic, partial differential equation with distributional coefficients and data. The problem we consider is a generalization of the Lichnerowicz equation that one encounters in studying the constraint equations in general relativity. Our method for solving this problem consists of solving a net of regularized, semilinear problems with data obtained by smoothing the original, distributional coefficients. In order to solve these regularized problems, we develop a priori pointwise bounds and sub- and super-solutions and…
We study the Cauchy problem for a scalar semilinear degenerate parabolic partial differential equation with stochastic forcing. In particular, we are concerned with the well-posedness in any space dimension. We adapt the notion of kinetic solution which is well suited for degenerate parabolic problems and supplies a good technical framework to prove the comparison principle. The proof of existence is based on the vanishing viscosity method: the solution is obtained by a compactness argument as the limit of solutions of nondegenerate approximations.
The main purpose of this paper is to establish the existence of positive solutions to a class of quasilinear elliptic equations involving the (p-q)-Laplacian operator. We consider a nonlinearity that can be subcritical at infinity and supercritical at the origin; we also consider potential functions that can vanish at infinity. The approach is based on variational arguments dealing with the mountain-pass lemma and an adaptation of the penalization method. In order to overcome the lack of compactness we modify the original problem and the associated energy functional. Finally, to show that the …
We study the existence of positive solutions on $\R^{N+1}$ to semilinear elliptic equation $-Δu+u=f(u)$ where $N\geq 1$ and $f$ is modeled on the power case $f(u)=|u|^{p-1}u$. Denoting with $c$ the mountain pass level of $\f(u)=\tfrac 12\|u\|^{2}_{H^{1}(\R^{N})}-\int_{\R^{N}}F(u)\, dx$, $u\in H^{1}(\R^{N})$ ($F(s)=\int_{0}^{s}f(t)\, dt$), we show, via a new energy constrained variational argument, that for any $b\in [0,c)$ there exists a positive bounded solution $v_{b}\in C^{2}(\R^{N+1})$ such that $E_{v_{b}}(y)=\tfrac 12\|\partial_{y}v_{b}(\cdot,y)\|^{2}_{L^{2}(\R^{N})}-V(v_{b}(\cdot,y))=-b$…
We consider the following Kirchhoff - Choquard equation \[ -M(\|\na u\|_{L^2}^{2})\De u = \la f(x)|u|^{q-2}u+ \left(\int_{\Om}\frac{|u(y)|^{2^*_μ}}{|x-y|^μ}dy\right)|u|^{2^*_μ-2}u \; \text{in}\; \Om,\quad u = 0 \; \text{ on } \pa \Om , \] where $\Om$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^N( N\geq 3)$ with $C^2$ boundary, $2^*_μ=\frac{2N-μ}{N-2}$, $1<q\leq 2$, and $f$ is a continuous real valued sign changing function. When $1<q< 2$, using the method of Nehari manifold and Concentration-compactness Lemma, we prove the existence and multiplicity of positive solutions of the above problem. We also p…
In this work we study the existence of nontrivial solution for the following class of semilinear degenerate elliptic equations $$ -Δ_γ u + a(z)u = f(u) ~~ \mbox{in} ~~ \mathbb{R}^{N}, $$ where $Δ_γ$ is known as the {\it Grushin operator}, $z:=(x,y)\in\mathbb{R}^{m}\times\mathbb{R}^{k}$ and $m+k=N\geq 3$, $f$ and $a$ are continuous function satisfying some technical conditions. In order to overcome some difficulties involving this type of operator, we have proved some compactness results that are crucial in the proof of our main results. For the case $a=1$, we have showed a Berestycki-Lions typ…
In this work we state and prove versions of some classical results, in the framework of functionals defined in the space of functions of bounded variation in $\mathbb{R}^N$. More precisely, we present versions of the Radial Lemma of Strauss, the compactness of the embeddings of the space of radially symmetric functions of $BV(\mathbb{R}^N)$ in some Lebesgue spaces and also a version of the Lions Lemma, proved in his celebrated paper of 1984. As an application, we state and prove a version of the Mountain Pass Theorem without the Palais-Smale condition in order to get existence of a ground-stat…
This paper is devoted to study the semilinear elliptic system of Hénon-type \begin{eqnarray*} -Δ_{\mathbb{B}^{N}}u= K(d(x))Q_{u}(u,v) \\ -Δ_{\mathbb{B}^{N}}v= K(d(x))Q_{v}(u,v) \end{eqnarray*} in the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{B}^{N}$, $N\geq 3$, where $u, v \in H_{r}^{1}(\mathbb{B}^{N})=\{ϕ\in H^1(\mathbb{B}^N): ϕ\, \text{is radial}\}$ and $-Δ_{\mathbb{B}^{N}}$ denotes the Laplace-Beltrami operator on $\mathbb{B}^N$, $Q \in C^{1}(\mathbb{R}\times \mathbb{R},\mathbb{R})$ is a p-homogeneous function, $d(x)=d_{\mathbb{B}^N}(0,x)$ and $K\geq0 $ is a continuous function. We prove a compactness resu…
In this paper we are interested in the existence of semiclassical states for the Choquard type equation $$ -\vr^2Δu +V(x)u =\Big(\int_{\R^N} \frac{G(u(y))}{|x-y|^μ}dy\Big)g(u) \quad \mbox{in $\R^N$}, $$ where $0<μ<N$, $N\geq3$, $\vr$ is a positive parameter and $G$ is the primitive of $g$ which is of critical growth due to the Hardy--Littlewood--Sobolev inequality. The potential function $V(x)$ is assumed to be nonnegative with $V(x)=0$ in some region of $\R^N$, which means it is of the critical frequency case. Firstly we study a Choquard equation with double critical exponents and prove the e…
In this paper we are concerned with the existence and multiplicity of solutions for the fractional Choquard-type Schrödinger-Kirchhoff equations with electromagnetic fields and critical nonlinearity: \begin{eqnarray*} \begin{cases} \varepsilon^{2s}M([u]_{s,A}^2)(-Δ)_{A}^su + V(x)u = (|x|^{-α}*F(|u|^2))f(|u|^2)u + |u|^{2_s^\ast-2}u,\ \ \ x\in \mathbb{R}^N,\\ u(x) \rightarrow 0,\ \ \quad \mbox{as}\ |x| \rightarrow \infty, \end{cases} \end{eqnarray*} where $(-Δ)_{A}^s$ is the fractional magnetic operator with $0<s<1$, $2_s^\ast = 2N/(N-2s)$, $α< \min\{N, 4s\}$, $M : \mathbb{R}^{+}_{0}\rightarrow …
We consider the total energy decay together with L^2-bound of the solution itself of the Cauchy problem for wave equations with a localized damping and a short-range potential. We treat it in the one dimensional Euclidean space R. We adopt a simple multiplier method to study them. In this case, it is essential that the compactness of the support of the initial data is not assumed. Since this problem is treated in the whole space, the Poincare and Hardy inequalities are not available as is developed in the exterior domain case. For compensating such a lack of useful tools, the potential plays a…
