We consider the following nonlinear singular elliptic equation $$-{div} (|x|^{-2a}\nabla u)=K(x)|x|^{-bp}|u|^{p-2}u+\la g(x) \quad{in} \RR^N,$$ where $g$ belongs to an appropriate weighted Sobolev space, and $p$ denotes the Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg critical exponent associated to $a$, $b$, and $N$. Under some natural assumptions on the positive potential $K(x)$ we establish the existence of some $\la\_0>0$ such that the above problem has at least two distinct solutions provided that $\la\in(0,\la\_0)$. The proof relies on Ekeland's Variational Principle and on the Mountain Pass Theorem without the Palais-Smale condition, combined with a weighted variant of the Brezis-Lieb Lemma.
In this paper we present some compactness results, showing how they can be applied in dealing with "zero mass" problems by a variational approach. In particular we use our results in two different situations: we look for complex valued solutions of a very classical elliptic equation, and we study an elliptic problem on an axially symmetric unbounded domain.
This paper deals with the lack of compactness in nonlinear elliptic problems $(P)$. In particular, a domain $Ω$ is provided where not converging Palais-Smale sequences exist at every energy level. Nevertheless, it is proved that problem $(P)$ has infinitely many solutions on $Ω$.
This paper is devoted to the study of degenerate critical elliptic equations of Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg type. By means of blow-up analysis techniques, we prove an a-priori estimate in a weighted space of continuous functions. From this compactness result, the existence of a solution to our problem is proved by exploiting the homotopy invariance of the Leray-Schauder degree.
We consider a class of fourth order elliptic systems which include the Euler-Lagrange equations of biharmonic mappings in dimension 4 and we prove that weak limit of weak solutions to such systems is again a weak solution to a limit system.
We use blow up analysis for local integral equations to prove compactness of solutions to higher order critical elliptic equations provided the potentials only have non-degenerate zeros. Secondly, corresponding to Schoen's Weyl tensor vanishing conjecture for the Yamabe equation on manifolds, we establish a Laplacian vanishing rate of the potentials at blow up points of solutions.
We show that all nonnegative solutions of the critical semilinear elliptic equation involving the regional fractional Laplacian are locally universally bounded. This strongly contrasts with the standard fractional Laplacian case. Second, we consider the fractional critical elliptic equations with nonnegative potentials. We prove compactness of solutions provided the potentials only have non-degenerate zeros. Corresponding to Schoen's Weyl tensor vanishing conjecture for the Yamabe equation on manifolds, we establish a Laplacian vanishing rate of the potentials at blow-up points of solutions.
One of the major difficulties in nonlinear elliptic problems involving critical nonlinearities is the compactness of Palais-Smale sequences. In their celebrated work \cite{BN}, Brézis and Nirenberg introduced the notion of critical level for these sequences in the case of a critical perturbation of the Laplacian homogeneous eigenvalue problem. In this paper, we give a natural and general formula of the critical level for a large class of nonlinear elliptic critical problems. The sharpness of our formula is established by the construction of suitable Palais-Smale sequences which are not relativ…
We give a quantization analysis to an elliptic system (Gelfand-Liouville type system) with Dirichlet condition. An application, we have a com-pactness result for an elliptic system with Lipschitz condition.
We give a blow-up behavior for solutions to a problem with singularity and with Dirichlet condition. An application, we have a compactness of the solutions to this Problem with singularity and Lipschitz conditions.
We give blow-up behavior for solutions to an elliptic system with Dirichlet condition, and, weight and boundary singularity. Also, we have a compactness result for this elliptic system with regular H{ö}lderian weight and boundary singularity and Lipschitz condition.
In this note, we consider blow-up for solutions of the SU(3) Toda system on a compact surface Σ. In particular, we give a complete proof of the compactness result stated by Jost, Lin and Wang and we extend it to the case of singularities. This is a necessary tool to find solutions through variational methods.
In this paper we consider a mean field problem on a compact surface with conical singularities. This problem appears in the Gaussian curvature prescription problem in Geometry, and also in the Electroweak Theory and in the abelian Chern-Simons-Higgs model in Physics. In this paper we focus on the case of sign-changing potentials, and we give results on compactness, existence and multiplicity of solutions.
Symmetry plays a basic role in variational problems (settled e.g. in $\mathbb R^{n}$ or in a more general manifold), for example to deal with the lack of compactness which naturally appear when the problem is invariant under the action of a noncompact group. In $\mathbb R^n$, a compactness result for invariant functions with respect to a subgroup $G$ of $\mathrm{O}(n)$ has been proved under the condition that the $G$ action on $\mathbb R^n$ is compatible, see \cite{willem}. As a first result we generalize this and show here that the compactness is recovered for particular subgroups of the isom…
The concentration compactness framework for semilinear elliptic equations without compactness, set originally by P.-L.Lions for constrained minimization in the case of homogeneous nonlinearity, is extended here to the case of general nonlinearities in the standard mountain pass setting of Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz. In these setting, existence of solutions at the mountain pass level is verified under a single penalty condition analogous to that in the Lions' case. Problems on the whole space and problems with critical nonlinearity are considered. Particular attention is given to nonhomogeneous crit…
In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of second-order uniformly elliptic operators on weighted Riemannian manifolds. They naturally emerge when studying spectral properties of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on families of manifolds with rapidly oscillating metrics. We appeal to the notion of H-convergence introduced by Murat and Tartar. In our main result we establish an H-compactness result that applies to elliptic operators with measurable, uniformly elliptic coefficients on weighted Riemannian manifolds. We further discuss the special case of ``locally periodic'' coefficients and st…
We prove the compactness of solutions to general fourth order elliptic equations which are L^1-perturbations of the Q-curvature equation on compact Riemannian 4-maniods. Consequently, we prove the global existence and convergence of the Q-curvature flow on a generic class of Riemannian 4-manifolds. As a by product, we give a positive answer to an open question by A. Malchiodi on the existence of bounded Palais-Smale sequences for the Q-curvature problem when the Paneitz operator is positive with trivial kernel.
It is established existence, multiplicity and asymptotic behavior of positive solutions for a quasilinear elliptic problem driven by the $Φ$-Laplacian operator. One of these solutions is obtained as ground state solution by applying the well known Nehari method. The semilinear term in the quasilinear equation is a concave-convex function which presents a critical behavior at infinity. The concentration compactness principle is used in order to recover the compactness required in variational methods.
Given $N\geq 3$, $1<p<N$, two measurable functions $V\left(r \right)\geq 0$, $K\left(r\right)> 0$ and a continuous function $A(r) >0$ ($r>0$), we study the quasilinear elliptic equation \[ -\mathrm{div}\left(A(|x| )|\nabla u|^{p-2} \nabla u\right) u+V\left( \left| x\right| \right) |u|^{p-2}u= K(|x|) f(u) \quad \text{in }\mathbb{R}^{N}. \] We find existence of nonegative solutions by the application of variational methods, for which we have to study the compactness of the embedding of a suitable function space $X$ into the sum of Lebesgue spaces $L_{K}^{q_{1}}+L_{K}^{q_{2}}$, and thus into $L_{…
For a given second-order linear elliptic operator $L$ which admits a positive minimal Green function, and a given positive weight function $W$, we introduce a family of weighted Lebesgue spaces $L^p(ϕ_p)$ with their dual spaces, where $1\leq p\leq \infty$. We study some fundamental properties of the corresponding (weighted) Green operators on these spaces. In particular, we prove that these Green operators are bounded on $L^p(ϕ_p)$ for any $1\leq p\leq \infty$ with a uniform bound. We study the existence of a principal eigenfunction for these operators in these spaces, and the simplicity of th…
We study the branch of semi-stable and unstable solutions (i.e., those whose Morse index is at most one) of the Dirichlet boundary value problem $-Δu=\frac{λf(x)}{(1-u)^2}$ on a bounded domain $Ω\subset \R^N$, which models --among other things-- a simple electrostatic Micro-Electromechanical System (MEMS) device. We extend the results of [11] relating to the minimal branch, by obtaining compactness along unstable branches for $1\leq N \leq 7$ on any domain $Ω$ and for a large class of "permittivity profiles" $f$ . We also show the remarkable fact that power-like profiles $f(x) \simeq |x|^α$ ca…
We deal with nonlinear weighted biharmonic problem in the unit ball of $\mathbb{R}^{4}$. The weight is of logarithm type. The nonlinearity is critical in view of Adam's inequalities in the weighted Sobolev space $W^{2,2}_{0}(B,w)$. We prove the existence of non trivial solutions via the critical point theory. The main difficulty is the loss of compactness due to the critical exponential growth of the nonlinear term $f$. We give a new growth condition and we point out its importance for checking the Palais-Smale compactness condition.
The formation of gradient-driven singular structures of codimension one and two in two-dimensions: The case study of ferronematics. Part~I: Energy estimates and compactness results
In this paper, we extend the uniform regularity estimates obtained by M. Avellanda and F. Lin in the paper of Compactness methods in the theory of homogenization (Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 40(1987), no.6, 803-847) to the more general second order elliptic systems in divergences form, with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients. We establish not only sharp $W^{1,p}$ estimates, Holder estimates, Lipschitz estimates and non-tangential maximal function estimates for the Dirichelt problem on a $C^{1,η}$ domain, but also a sharp $O(\varepsilon)$ convergence rate in $H_0^1(Ω)$ by virtue of the Dirich…
In this paper, we obtain some important variants of the Lions and Chabrowski Concentration-compactness principle, in the context of fractional Sobolev spaces with variable exponents, especially for nonlinear systems. As an application of the results, we show the existence and assymptotic behaviour of nontrivial solutions for elliptic systems involving a new class of general nonlocal integrodifferential operators with exponent variables and critical growth conditions in $\mathbb{R}^{N}$.
We obtain nontrivial solutions of some elliptic interface problems with nonhomogeneous jump conditions that arise in localized chemical reactions and nonlinear neutral inclusions. Our proofs in bounded domains use Morse theoretical arguments, in particular, critical group computations. An extension to the whole space is proved using concentration compactness arguments.
In this work we study a class of nonlocal quadratic forms given by \[ \mathcal{E}_j(u,v)=\frac{1}{2}\int_{\mathbb{R}^N}\int_{\mathbb{R}^N}(u(x)-u(y))(v(x)-v(y))j(x-y)\ dxdy, \] where $j:\mathbb{R}^N\to[0,\infty]$ is a measurable even function with $\min\{1,|\cdot|^2\}j\in L^1(\mathbb{R}^N)$. Assuming merely $j\notin L^1(\mathbb{R}^N)$, we show local compactness of the embedding $\mathcal{D}^j(\mathbb{R}^N)\hookrightarrow L^2(\mathbb{R}^N)$, where $\mathcal{D}^j(\mathbb{R}^N)$ denotes the space of functions $u\in L^2(\mathbb{R}^N)$ with $\mathcal{E}_j(u,u)<\infty$. Using this local compactness,…
Existence and non-existence results are established for quasilinear elliptic problems with nonlinear boundary conditions and lack of compactness. The proofs combine variational methods with the geometrical feature, due to the competition between the different growths of the non-linearities.
In this work we obtain a compactness result for the $H-$convergence of a family of nonlocal and nonlinear monotone elliptic-type problems by means of Tartar's method of oscillating test functions.
In this paper we consider nonautonomous elliptic operators ${\mathcal A}$ with nontrivial potential term defined in $I\times\mathbb R^d$, where $I$ is a right-halfline (possibly $I=\mathbb R$). We prove that we can associate an evolution operator $(G(t,s))$ with ${\mathcal A}$ in the space of all bounded and continuous functions on $\mathbb R^d$. We also study the compactness properties of the operator $G(t,s)$. Finally, we provide sufficient conditions guaranteeing that each operator $G(t,s)$ preserves the usual $L^p$-spaces and $C_0(\mathbb R^d)$.
Existence of a generalized solution to a strongly singular convective elliptic equation in the whole space is established. The differential operator, patterned after the (p,q)-Laplacian, can be non-homogeneous. The result is obtained by solving some regularized problems through fixed point theory, variational methods and compactness results, besides exploiting nonlinear regularity theory and comparison principles.
A compactness theorem for volume-constrained almost-critical points of elliptic integrands is proven. The result is new even for the area functional, as almost-criticality is measured in an integral rather than in a uniform sense. Two main applications of the compactness theorem are discussed. First, we obtain a description of critical points/local minimizers of elliptic energies interacting with a confinement potential. Second, we prove an Alexandrov-type theorem for crystalline isoperimetric problems.
In this paper, we study the solvability of the nonlinear Dirichlet problem with sum of the operators of independent non standard growths in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{n}$. We obtain sufficient conditions and show the existence of weak solutions of the considered problem by using monotonicity and compactness methods together.
The existence of entire solutions to quasilinear elliptic systems exhibiting both singular and convective reaction terms is discussed. An auxiliary problem, obtained by `freezing' the convection terms and `shifting' the singular ones, is first solved. Then, a priori estimates, fixed point arguments, nonlinear regularity, compactness results concerning the gradient terms, besides a regularization-localization procedure, yield the existence of a weak solution to the problem.
We consider positive singular solutions to semilinear elliptic problems with possibly singular nonlinearity. We deduce symmetry and monotonicity properties of the solutions via the moving plane procedure.
This paper is devoted to discussing the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions to time-fractional elliptic equations having time-dependent variable coefficients. To obtain the main result, our strategy is to combine the Galerkin method, a basic inequality for the fractional derivative of convex Lyapunov candidate functions, the Yoshida approximation sequence and the weak compactness argument.
We prove an existence result for a quasilinear elliptic equation satisfying natural growth conditions. As a consequence, we deduce an existence result for a quasilinear elliptic equation containing a singular drift. A key tool, in the proof, is the study of an auxiliary variational inequality playing the role of "natural constraint"
On compact Riemannian manifolds, we prove a decomposition theorem for arbitrarily bounded energy sequence of solutions of a singular elliptic equation.
n this paper, we prove existence of nodal solutions for singular semilinear elliptic systems without variational structure where its both components are of sign changing. Our approach is based on sub-supersolutions method combined with perturbation arguments involving singular terms.
We study a Dirichlet problem for an elliptic equation defined by a degenerate coercive operator and a singular right-hand side. We will show that the right-hand side has some regularizing effects on the solutions, even if it is singular.
We study the following nonlinear and nonlocal elliptic equation in~$\R^n$ $$ (-Δ)^s u = ε\,h\,u^q + u^p \ {\mbox{ in }}\R^n, $$ where~$s\in(0,1)$, $n>2s$, $ε>0$ is a small parameter, $p=\frac{n+2s}{n-2s}$, $q\in(0,1)$, and~$h\in L^1(\R^n)\cap L^\infty(\R^n)$. The problem has a variational structure, and this allows us to find a positive solution by looking at critical points of a suitable energy functional. In particular, in this paper, we find a local minimum and a mountain pass solution of this functional. One of the crucial ingredient is a Concentration-Compactness principle. Some difficult…
We show the existence of positive solutions for a class of singular elliptic systems with convection term. The approach combines pseudomonotone operator theory, sub and supersolution method and perturbation arguments involving singular terms.
We prove the existence of positive solutions for a class of semipositone problem with singular Trudinger-Moser nonlinearities. The proof is based on compactness and regularity arguments.
In this paper we establish existence of smooth positive solutions for a singular quasilinear elliptic system involving gradient terms. The approach combines sub-supersolutions method and Schauder's fixed point theorem.
In this paper we establish existence, nonexitence and regularity of positive solutions for a class of singular quasilinear elliptic systems subject to (super-) homogeneous condition. The approach is based on sub-supersolution methods for systems of quasilinear singular equations combined with perturbation arguments involving singular terms.
In this paper, we prove existence and regularity of positive solutions for singular quasilinear elliptic systems involving gradient terms. Our approach is based on comparison properties, a priori estimates and Schauder's fixed point theorem.
