We study the branch of semi-stable and unstable solutions (i.e., those whose Morse index is at most one) of the Dirichlet boundary value problem $-Δu=\frac{λf(x)}{(1-u)^2}$ on a bounded domain $Ω\subset \R^N$, which models --among other things-- a simple electrostatic Micro-Electromechanical System (MEMS) device. We extend the results of [11] relating to the minimal branch, by obtaining compactness along unstable branches for $1\leq N \leq 7$ on any domain $Ω$ and for a large class of "permittivity profiles" $f$ . We also show the remarkable fact that power-like profiles $f(x) \simeq |x|^α$ can push back the critical dimension N=7 of this problem, by establishing compactness for the semi-stable branch on the unit ball, also for $N\geq 8$ and as long as $α>α_N=\frac{3N-14-4\sqrt{6}}{4+2\sqrt{6}}$ . As a byproduct, we are able to follow the second branch of the bifurcation diagram and prove the existence of a second solution for $λ$ in a natural range. In all these results, the conditions on the space-dimension and on the power of the profile are essentially sharp.
In this paper we use a concentration and compactness argument to prove the existence of a nontrivial nonradial solution to the nonlinear Schrodinger-Poisson equations in R3, assuming on the nonlinearity the general hypotheses introduced by Berestycki & Lions
We study the following Kirchhoff equation $$- \left(1 + b \int_{\mathbb{R}^3} |\nabla u|^2 dx \right) Δu + V(x) u = f(x,u), \ x \in \mathbb{R}^3.$$ A special feature of this paper is that the nonlinearity $f$ and the potential $V$ are indefinite, hence sign-changing. Under some appropriate assumptions on $V$ and $f$, we prove the existence of two different solutions of the equation via the Ekeland variational principle and Mountain Pass Theorem.
The paper studies continutity of Moser nonlinearity in two dimensions with respect to weak convergence. Unlike the critical nonlinearity in the Sobolev inequality, which lacks weak continuity at any point, Moser functional fails to be weakly continuous only in an exceptional case of a concentrating sequence of functions from the Moser family (up to translations and the remainder vanishing in Sobolev norm). The argument is based on a structural description of the defect of weak converegence, analogous to the profile decomposition established by Solimini for Sobolev inequalities, but involving g…
The concentration compactness framework for semilinear elliptic equations without compactness, set originally by P.-L.Lions for constrained minimization in the case of homogeneous nonlinearity, is extended here to the case of general nonlinearities in the standard mountain pass setting of Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz. In these setting, existence of solutions at the mountain pass level is verified under a single penalty condition analogous to that in the Lions' case. Problems on the whole space and problems with critical nonlinearity are considered. Particular attention is given to nonhomogeneous crit…
In this paper, we first establish a criterion based on contractive function for the existence of polynomial attractors. This criterion only involves some rather weak compactness associated with the repeated limit inferior and requires no compactness, which makes it suitable for critical cases. Then by this abstract theorem, we verify the existence of a polynomial attractor and estimate its attractive speed for the wave equation with nonlocal weak damping, anti-damping and critical nonlinearity.
In this paper, we consider the nonlinear fractional Schrödinger equations with Hartree type nonlinearity. We obtain the existence of standing waves by studying the related constrained minimization problems by applying the concentration-compactness principle. Via symmetric decreasing rearrangements, we also show that the standing waves, up to a translations and phases, are positive symmetric nonincreasing functions. Moreover, we prove that the set of minimizers is a stable set for the initial value problem of the equations, that is, a solution whose initial data is near the set will remain near…
In this article, we investigate the existence and multiplicity of solutions of Kirchhoff equation \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{aligned} -(1+b \int_{\mathbb{R}^3}|\nabla u|^2)Δu= k(x)\frac{|u|^2 u}{|x|} +λh(x)u,~~x\in\mathbb{R}^3\\ u(x)\rightarrow 0 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~as ~~~~|x|\rightarrow\infty \end{aligned} \right. \end{equation*} where the potential $k(x)$ allows sign changing. Making use of Nehari manifold method and Concentration-compactness principle, we obtain the existence and multiplicity of solutions for this equation.
In this paper, we prove the existence of minimizers of a class of multi-constrained variational problems. We consider systems involving a nonlinearity that does not satisfy compactness, monotonicity, neither symmetry properties. Our approach hinges on the concentration-compactness approach. In the second part, we will treat orthogonal constrained problems for another class of integrands using density matrices method.
We present a new approach to solve a Schrödinger Equation autonomous at infinity, by identifying the relation between the arrangement of the spectrum of the concerned operator and the behavior of the nonlinearity at zero and at infinity. In order to apply variational methods, we set up a suitable linking structure depending on the growth of the nonlinear term and making use of information about the autonomous problem at infinity. Our method allows us to circumvent the lack of compactness. The main novelty is that none monotonicity assumption is required on the nonlinearity, which may be sign-c…
We study the existence of nontrivial solutions for a nonlinear fractional elliptic equation in presence of logarithmic and critical exponential nonlinearities. This problem extends [5] to fractional $N/s$-Laplacian equations with logarithmic nonlinearity. We overcome the lack of compactness due to the critical exponential nonlinearity by using the fractional Trudinger-Moser inequality. The existence result is established via critical point theory.
The existence and multiplicity of solutions to a quasilinear, elliptic partial differential equation (PDE) with singular non-linearity is analyzed. The PDE is a recently derived variant of a canonical model used in the modeling of Micro-Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS). It is observed that the bifurcation curve of solutions terminates at single dead-end point, beyond which no classical solutions exist. A necessary condition for the existence of solutions is developed which reveals that this dead-end point corresponds to a blow-up in the solution derivative at a point internal to the domain. U…
In this paper we consider the nonlinear fractional logarithmic Schrödinger equation. By using a compactness method, we construct a unique global solution of the associated Cauchy problem in a suitable functional framework. We also prove the existence of ground states as minimizers of the action on the Nehari manifold. Finally, we prove that the set of minimizers is a stable set for the initial value problem, that is, a solution whose initial data is near the set will remain near it for all time.
The paper raises a question about the optimal critical nonlinearity for the Sobolev space in two dimensions, connected to loss of compactness, and discusses the pertinent concentration compactness framework. We study properties of the improved version of the Trudinger-Moser inequality on the open unit disk $B\subset\R^2$, recently proved by G. Mancini and K. Sandeep. Unlike the original Trudinger-Moser inequality, this inequality is invariant with respect to Möbius automorphisms of the unit disk, and as such is a closer analogy of the critical nonlinearity $\int |u|^{2^*}$ in the higher dimens…
We consider the following Kirchhoff - Choquard equation \[ -M(\|\na u\|_{L^2}^{2})\De u = \la f(x)|u|^{q-2}u+ \left(\int_{\Om}\frac{|u(y)|^{2^*_μ}}{|x-y|^μ}dy\right)|u|^{2^*_μ-2}u \; \text{in}\; \Om,\quad u = 0 \; \text{ on } \pa \Om , \] where $\Om$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^N( N\geq 3)$ with $C^2$ boundary, $2^*_μ=\frac{2N-μ}{N-2}$, $1<q\leq 2$, and $f$ is a continuous real valued sign changing function. When $1<q< 2$, using the method of Nehari manifold and Concentration-compactness Lemma, we prove the existence and multiplicity of positive solutions of the above problem. We also p…
We deal with nonlinear weighted biharmonic problem in the unit ball of $\mathbb{R}^{4}$. The weight is of logarithm type. The nonlinearity is critical in view of Adam's inequalities in the weighted Sobolev space $W^{2,2}_{0}(B,w)$. We prove the existence of non trivial solutions via the critical point theory. The main difficulty is the loss of compactness due to the critical exponential growth of the nonlinear term $f$. We give a new growth condition and we point out its importance for checking the Palais-Smale compactness condition.

We consider an elliptic problem with nonlinear boundary condition involving nonlinearity with superlinear and subcritical growth at infinity and a bifurcation parameter as a factor. We use re-scaling method, degree theory and continuation theorem to prove that there exists a connected branch of positive solutions bifurcating from infinity when the parameter goes to zero. Moreover, if the nonlinearity satisfies additional conditions near zero, we establish a global bifurcation result, and discuss the number of positive solution(s) with respect to the parameter using bifurcation theory and degre…
Given $N\geq 3$, $1<p<N$, two measurable functions $V\left(r \right)\geq 0$, $K\left(r\right)> 0$ and a continuous function $A(r) >0$ ($r>0$), we study the quasilinear elliptic equation \[ -\mathrm{div}\left(A(|x| )|\nabla u|^{p-2} \nabla u\right) u+V\left( \left| x\right| \right) |u|^{p-2}u= K(|x|) f(u) \quad \text{in }\mathbb{R}^{N}. \] We find existence of nonegative solutions by the application of variational methods, for which we have to study the compactness of the embedding of a suitable function space $X$ into the sum of Lebesgue spaces $L_{K}^{q_{1}}+L_{K}^{q_{2}}$, and thus into $L_{…
We study the perturbation by a critical term and a $(p-1)$-superlinear subcritical nonlinearity of a quasilinear elliptic equation containing a singular potential. By means of variational arguments and a version of the concentration-compactness principle in the singular case, we prove the existence of solutions for positive values of the parameter under the principal eigenvalue of the associated singular eigenvalue problem.
We prove the existence of a positive solution to a semipositone $N$-Laplacian problem with a critical Trudinger-Moser nonlinearity. The proof is based on obtaining uniform $C^{1,α}$ a priori estimates via a compactness argument. Our result is new even in the semilinear case $N = 2$, and our arguments can easily be adapted to obtain positive solutions of more general semipositone problems with critical Trudinger-Moser nonlinearities.
Consider a branch of unstable solitons of NLS whose linearized operators have one pair of simple real eigenvalues in addition to the zero eigenvalue. Under radial symmetry and standard assumptions, solutions to initial data from a neighbourhood of the branch either converge to a soliton, or exit a larger neighbourhood of the branch transversally. The qualitative dynamic near a branch of unstable solitons is irrespective of whether blowup eventually occurs, which has practical implications for the description of blowup of NLS with supercritical nonlinearity.
This paper is devoted to study a fractional Choquard problem with slightly subcritical exponents on bounded domains. When the exponent of the convolution type nonlinearity tends to the fractional critical one in the sense of Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality, we obtain the existence of multiple positive solutions via Lusternik-Schnirelmann category and nonlocal global compactness. Moreover, we prove that the topology of the domain furnishes a lower bound for the number of positive solutions.
In this paper, we prove the existences of pullback attractors in $L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^N)\times L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^N)$ for stochastic Fitzhugh-Nagumo system driven by both additive noises and deterministic non-autonomous forcings. The nonlinearity is polynomial like growth with exponent $p-1$. The asymptotic compactness for the cocycle in $L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^N)\times L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^N)$ is proved by using asymptotic a priori method, where the plus and minus signs of the nonlinearity at large value are not required.
In this paper, we show the existence and multiplicity of positive solutions of the following fractional Kirchhoff system\\ \begin{equation} \left\{ \begin{array}{rllll} \mc L_M(u)&=λf(x)|u|^{q-2}u+ \frac{2α}{α+β}\left|u\right|^{α-2}u|v|^β& \text{in } Ω,\\ \mc L_M(v)&=μg(x)|v|^{q-2}v+ \frac{2β}{α+β}\left|u\right|^α|v|^{β-2}v & \text{in } Ω,\\ u&=v=0 &\mbox{in } \mathbb{R}^{N}\setminus Ω, \end{array} \right. \end{equation} where $\mc L_M(u)=M\left(\displaystyle \int_Ω|(-Δ)^{\frac{s}{2}}u|^2dx\right)(-Δ)^{s} u $ is a double non-local operator due to Kirchhoff term $M(t)=a+b t$ with $a, b>0$ and f…
We are interested in regularity properties of semi-stable solutions for a class of singular semilinear elliptic problems with advection term defined on a smooth bounded domain of a complete Riemannian manifold with zero Dirichlet boundary condition. We prove uniform Lebesgue estimates and we determine the critical dimensions for these problems with nonlinearities of the type Gelfand, MEMS and power case. As an application, we show that extremal solutions are classical whenever the dimension of the manifold is below the critical dimension of the associated problem. Moreover, we analyze the bran…
For scalar fully nonlinear partial differential equations depending on the Hessian andspatial coordinates, we present a general theory for obtaining comparison principles and well posedness for the associated Dirichlet problem with continuous boundary data. In particular, we treat admissible viscosity solutions of elliptic branches of the equation, where the nonlinearity need not be monotone on all of the space of symmetric N by N matrices. An elliptic branch (in the sense of Krylov, 1995) of the equation is encoded by a set valued map from the coordinate domain into the elliptic subsets of th…
We study a singularly perturbed PDE with cubic nonlinearity depending on a complex perturbation parameter $ε$. This is the continuation of a precedent work by the first author. We construct two families of sectorial meromorphic solutions obtained as a small perturbation in $ε$ of two branches of an algebraic slow curve of the equation in time scale. We show that the nonsingular part of the solutions of each family shares a common formal power series in $ε$ as Gevrey asymptotic expansion which might be different one to each other, in general.
In this paper, we deal with a fractional elliptic equation with critical Sobolev nonlinearity and Hardy term $$ (-Δ)^α u-μ\frac{u}{|x|^{2α}}+a(x) u=|u|^{2^*-2}u+k(x)|u|^{q-2}u$$ $$ u\,\in\,H^α({\mathbb R}^N),$$ where $2<q< 2^*$, $0<α<1$, $N>4α$, $2^*=2N/(N-2α)$ is the critical Sobolev exponent, $a(x),k(x)\in C({\mathbb R}^N)$. Through a compactness analysis of the functional associated to $(*)$, we obtain the existence of positive solutions for $(*)$ under certain assumptions on $a(x),k(x)$.
We study the bifurcation of solutions of semilinear elliptic boundary value problems of the form \begin{align*} \begin{aligned} -Δu &= f_λ(|x|,u,|\nabla u|) &&\text{in }Ω, u &= 0 &&\text{on }\partialΩ, \end{aligned} \end{align*} on an annulus $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$, with a concave-convex nonlinearity, a special case being the nonlinearity first considered by Ambrosetti, Brezis and Cerami: $f_λ(|x|,u,|\nabla u|)=λ|u|^{q-2}u + |u|^{p-2}u$ with $1<q<2<p$. Although the trivial solution $u_0\equiv0$ is nondegenerate if $λ=0$ we prove that $(λ_0,u_0)=(0,0)$ is a bifurcation point. In fact, the bifur…
In this paper, we study the positive solutions to the following singular and non local elliptic problem posed in a bounded and smooth domain $Ω\subset \R^N$, $N> 2s$: % \begin{eqnarray*} (P_λ)\left\{\begin{array}{lll} &(-Δ)^s u=λ(K(x)u^{-δ}+f(u))\mbox{ in }Ω&u>0 \mbox{ in }Ω& u\equiv\, 0\mbox{ in }\R^N\backslashΩ. \end{array}\right. \end{eqnarray*} % Here $0<s<1$, $δ>0$, $λ>0$ and $f\,:\, \R^+\to\R^+$ is a positive $C^2$ function. $K\,:\, Ω\to \R^+$ is a Hölder continuous function in $Ω$ which behave as ${\rm dist}(x,\partialΩ)^{-β}$ near the boundary with $0\leq β<2s$. First, for any $δ>0$ an…
The main purpose of this paper is to establish the existence of positive solutions to a class of quasilinear elliptic equations involving the (p-q)-Laplacian operator. We consider a nonlinearity that can be subcritical at infinity and supercritical at the origin; we also consider potential functions that can vanish at infinity. The approach is based on variational arguments dealing with the mountain-pass lemma and an adaptation of the penalization method. In order to overcome the lack of compactness we modify the original problem and the associated energy functional. Finally, to show that the …
