The paper raises a question about the optimal critical nonlinearity for the Sobolev space in two dimensions, connected to loss of compactness, and discusses the pertinent concentration compactness framework. We study properties of the improved version of the Trudinger-Moser inequality on the open unit disk $B\subset\R^2$, recently proved by G. Mancini and K. Sandeep. Unlike the original Trudinger-Moser inequality, this inequality is invariant with respect to Möbius automorphisms of the unit disk, and as such is a closer analogy of the critical nonlinearity $\int |u|^{2^*}$ in the higher dimension than the original Trudinger-Moser nonlinearity.
We show that the Moser-Trudinger inequality holds in a conformal disc if and only if the metric is bounded from above by the Hyperbolic metric. We also find a necessary and sufficient condition for the Moser-Trudinger inequality to hold in an unbounded subset of the two dimensional Euclidean space.
Given a compact closed four dimensional smooth Riemannian manifold, we prove existence of extremal functions for Moser-Trudinger type inequality. The method used is Blow-up analysis combined with capacity techniques.
This paper is devoted to study the sharp Moser-Trudinger type inequalities in whole space $\mathbb R^N$, $N \geq 2$ in more general case. We first compute explicitly the \emph{normalized vanishing limit} and the \emph{normalized concentrating limit} of the Moser-Trudinger type functional associated with our inequalities over all the \emph{normalized vanishing sequences} and the \emph{normalized concentrating sequences}, respectively. Exploiting these limits together with the concentration-compactness principle of Lions type, we give a proof of the exitence of maximizers for these Moser-Truding…
In this paper we obtain Hardy, weighted Trudinger-Moser and Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg type inequalities with sharp constants on Riemannian manifolds with non-positive sectional curvature and, in particular, a variety of new estimates on hyperbolic spaces. Moreover, in some cases we also show their equivalence with Trudinger-Moser inequalities. As consequences, the relations between the constants of these inequalities are investigated yielding asymptotically best constants in the obtained inequalities. We also obtain the corresponding uncertainty type principles.
We study a sharp fractional Moser-Trudinger type inequality in dimension 1, its compactness properties and the critical points of a functional associeted to the inequality.
We consider the problem of finding the optimal exponent in the Moser-Trudinger inequality \[ \sup \left\{\int_Ω\exp{\left(α\,|u|^{\frac{N}{N-s}}\right)}\,\bigg|\,u \in \widetilde{W}^{s,p}_0(Ω),\,[u]_{W^{s,p}(\mathbb{R}^N)}\leq 1 \right\}< + \infty.\] Here $Ω$ is a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^N$ ($N\geq 2$), $s \in (0,1)$, $sp = N$, $\widetilde{W}^{s,p}_0(Ω)$ is a Sobolev-Slobodeckij space, and $[\cdot]_{W^{s,p}(\mathbb{R}^N)}$ is the associated Gagliardo seminorm. We exhibit an explicit exponent $α^*_{s,N}>0$, which does not depend on $Ω$, such that the Moser-Trudinger inequality does not ho…
Let $d \ge 1$, $p \ge d$, and let $Ω$ be a smooth bounded open subset of $\mathbb{R}^d$. We prove some exponential integrability in the spirit of Moser-Trudinger's inequalities for measurable functions $u$ defined in $Ω$ such that $$ \mathop{\int_Ω \int_Ω}_{|u(x) - u(y)| > δ} \frac{1}{|x-y|^{d+p}} \, dx \, dy < + \infty, $$ for some $δ> 0$. This double integral appeared in characterizations of Sobolev spaces and involved in improvements of the Sobolev inequaliies, Poincaré inequalities, and Hardy inequalities.
The main aim of this article is to study non-singular version of Moser-Trudinger and Adams-Moser-Trudinger inequalities and the singular version of Moser-Trudinger equality in the Cartesian product of Sobolev spaces. As an application of these inequalities, we study a system of Kirchhoff equations with exponential non-linearity of Choquard type.
Trudinger-Moser inequality is a substitute to the (forbidden) critical Sobolev embedding, namely the case where the scaling corresponds to $L^\infty$. It is well known that the original form of the inequality with the sharp exponent (proved by Moser) fails on the whole plane, but a few modified versions are available. We prove a precised version of the latter, giving necessary and sufficient conditions for the boundedness, as well as for the compactness, in terms of the growth and decay of the nonlinear function. It is tightly related to the ground state of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation (…
We prove the existence of positive solutions for a class of semipositone problem with singular Trudinger-Moser nonlinearities. The proof is based on compactness and regularity arguments.
In this paper, we prove a Moser-Trudinger type inequality for pluri-subharmonic functions vanishing on the boundary. Our proof uses a descent gradient flow for the complex Monge-Ampere functional.
We derive the sharp Moser-Trudinger-Onofri inequalities on the standard $n$-sphere and CR $(2n+1)$- sphere as the limit of the sharp fractional Sobolev inequalities for all $n\ge 1$. On the $2$-sphere and $4$-sphere, this was established recently by S.-Y. Chang and F. Wang. Our proof uses an alternative and elementary argument.
We extend the Moser-Trudinger inequality to any Euclidean domain satisfying Poincaré's inequality. We find out that the same equivalence does not hold in general for conformal metrics on the unit ball, showing counterexamples. We also study the existence of extremals for the Moser-Trudinger inequalities for unbounded domains, proving it for the infinite planar strip.
Let $Ω$ be a smooth bounded domain in $\mathbf R^2$ and $λ^{\mathsf N} (Ω)$ the first non-zero Neumann eigenvalue of the operator $-Δ$ on $Ω$. In this paper, for any $γ\in [0, λ^{\mathsf N} (Ω) )$, we establish the following improved Moser-Trudinger inequality \[ \sup_{u} \int_Ω e^{2πu^2} dx < +\infty \] for arbitrary functions $u$ in $H^1(Ω)$ satisfying $\int_Ωu dx =0$ and $\|\nabla u\|_2^2 -α\|u\|_2^2 \leqslant 1$. Furthermore, this supremum is attained by some function $u^*\in H^1(Ω)$. This strengthens the results of Chang and Yang (J. Differential Geom. 27 (1988) 259-296) and of Lu and Yan…
In this paper, we establish a weighted Trudinger-Moser type inequality with the full Sobolev norm constraint on the whole Euclidean space. Main tool is the singular Trudinger-Moser inequality on the whole space recently established by Adimurthi and Yang, and a transformation of functions. We also discuss the existence and non-existence of maximizers for the associated variational problem.
Given a closed Riemann surface $(Σ,g)$ and any positive smooth weight, we use a minmax scheme together with compactness, quantization results and with sharp energy estimates to prove the existence of positive critical points of the functional $$J_{p,β}(u)=\frac{2-p}{2}\left(\frac{p\|u\|_{H^1}^2}{2β} \right)^{\frac{p}{2-p}}-\ln \int_Σ(e^{u_+^p}-1) f dv_g,$$ for every $p\in (1,2)$ and $β>0$, {or} for $p=1$ and $β\in (0,\infty)\setminus 4π\mathbb{N}$. Letting $p\uparrow 2$ we obtain positive critical points of the Moser-Trudinger functional $$F(u):=\int_Σ(e^{u^2}-1)f dv_g$$ constrained to $\mathc…
In this paper, we are concerned with the critical and subcritical Trudinger-Moser type inequalities for functions in a fractional Sobolev space $H^{1/2,2}$ on the whole real line. We prove the relation between two inequalities and discuss the attainability of the suprema.
In a previous paper, the author proved the existence of extremal function for the Moser-Trudinger inequality on a compact manifold. In the this paper, we will give a new proof of one of the key proposition.
In this paper, using the method of blow-up analysis, we obtained a Trudinger-Moser inequality involving L p -norm on a closed Riemann surface and proved the existence of an extremal function for the corresponding Trudinger-Moser functional. This extends an early result of Yang [27]. Similar result in the Euclidean space was also established by Lu-Yang [17].
We prove the existence of a positive solution to a semipositone $N$-Laplacian problem with a critical Trudinger-Moser nonlinearity. The proof is based on obtaining uniform $C^{1,α}$ a priori estimates via a compactness argument. Our result is new even in the semilinear case $N = 2$, and our arguments can easily be adapted to obtain positive solutions of more general semipositone problems with critical Trudinger-Moser nonlinearities.
In this paper, we concern trace Trudinger-Moser inequalities on a compact Riemann surface with smooth boundary. This kind of inequalities were extensively studied by Osgood-Phillips-Sarnak [24], Liu [20], Li-Liu [17], Yang [31, 32] and others. We establish several trace Trudinger-Moser inequalities and obtain the corresponding extremals via the method of blow-up analysis. The results in the current paper generalize those of Li-Liu [17] and Yang [32, 33].
We improve the sharpness of some fractional Moser-Trudinger type inequalities, particularly those studied by Lam-Lu and Martinazzi. As an application, improving upon works of Adimurthi and Lakkis, we prove the existence of weak solutions to the problem $(-Δ)^\frac{n}{2}u=λue^{bu^2} \,\text{ in }Ω,\, 0<λ<λ_1,\,b>0,$ with Dirichlet boundary condition, for any domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with finite measure. Here $λ_1$ is the first eigenvalue of $(-Δ)^\frac n2$ on $Ω$.
We prove the existence of extremals for fractional Moser-Trudinger inequalities in an interval and on the whole real line. In both cases we use blow-up analysis for the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equation, which requires new sharp estimates obtained via commutator techniques.
We establish an improved version of the Moser-Trudinger inequality in the hyperbolic space $\mathbb H^n$, $n\geq 2$. Namely, we prove the following result: for any $0 \leq λ< \left(\frac{n-1}n\right)^n$, then we have $$ \sup_{\substack{u\in C_0^\infty(\mathbb H^n) \int_{\mathbb H^n} |\nabla_g u|_g^n d\text{Vol}_g -λ\int_{\mathbb H^n} |u|^n d\text{ Vol}_g \leq 1}} \int_{\mathbb H^n} Φ_n(α_n |u|^{\frac{n}{n-1}}) d\text{ Vol}_g < \infty, $$ where $α_n = n ω_{n-1}^{\frac1{n-1}}$, $ω_{n-1}$ denotes the surface area of the unit sphere in $\mathbb R^n$ and $Φ_n(t) = e^t -\sum_{j=0}^{n-2}\frac{t^j}{j!…
On the 2-dimensional unit disk $B_1$ we study the Moser-Trudinger functional $$E(u)=\int_{B_1}(e^{u^2}-1)dx, u\in H^1_0(B_1)$$ and its restrictions to $M_Λ:=\{u \in H^1_0(B_1):\|u\|^2_{H^1_0}=Λ\}$ for $Λ>0$. We prove that if a sequence $u_k$ of positive critical points of $E|_{M_{Λ_k}}$ (for some $Λ_k>0$) blows up as $k\to\infty$, then $Λ_k\to 4π$, and $u_k\to 0$ weakly in $H^1_0(B_1)$ and strongly in $C^1_{\loc}(\bar B_1\setminus\{0\})$. Using this we also prove that when $Λ$ is large enough, then $E|_{M_Λ}$ has no positive critical point, complementing previous existence results by Carleson-…
We discuss some recent results by Parini and Ruf on a Moser-Trudinger type inequality in the setting of Sobolev-Slobodeckij spaces in dimension one. We push further their analysis considering the inequality on the whole $\mathbb{R}$ and we give an answer to one of their open questions.
By using a suitable topological argument based on cohomological linking and by exploiting a Trudinger-Moser inequality in fractional spaces recently obtained, we prove existence of multiple solutions for a problem involving the nonlinear fractional laplacian and a related critical exponential nonlinearity. This extends results in the literature for the N-Laplacian operator.
We consider a singular Liouville equation on a compact surface, arising from the study of Chern-Simons vortices in a self dual regime. Using new improved versions of the Moser-Trudinger inequalities (whose main feature is to be scaling invariant) and a variational scheme, we prove new existence results.
In this paper we prove a Moser-Trudinger inequality for the Euler-Lagrange functional of a general singular Liouville system. We characterize the values of the parameters which yield coercivity for the functional and we give necessary conditions for boundedness from below. We also provide a sharp inequality under some assumptions on the coefficients of the system.
In this paper we prove the pluricomplex counterpart of the Moser-Trudinger and Sobolev inequalities in complex space. We consider these inequalities for plurisubharmonic functions with finite pluricomplex energy, and we estimate the concerned constants.
We establish some existence results for a class of critical elliptic problems with singular exponential nonlinearities. We do not assume any global sign conditions on the nonlinearity, which makes our results new even in the nonsingular case.
We study Moser-Trudinger type functionals in the presence of singular potentials. In particular we propose a proof of a singular Carleson-Chang type estimate by means of Onofri's inequality for the unit disk in $\mathbb{R}^2$. Moreover we consider Adimurthi-Druet type functionals on compact surfaces with conical singularities and discuss the existence of extremals for such functionals extending previous results by Castò and Roy.
We investigate the existence of ground state solutions for a class of nonlinear scalar field equations defined on whole real line, involving a fractional Laplacian and nonlinearities with Trudinger-Moser critical growth. We handle the lack of compactness of the associated energy functional due to the unboundedness of the domain and the presence of a limiting case embedding.
In this note, we give a new proof of subcritical Trudinger-Moser inequality on $\mathbb{R}^n$. All the existing proofs on this inequality are based on the rearrangement argument with respect to functions in the Sobolev space $W^{1,n}(\mathbb{R}^n)$. Our method avoids this technique and thus can be used in the Riemannian manifold case and in the entire Heisenberg group.
Extending several works, we prove a general Adams-Moser-Trudinger type inequality for the embedding of Bessel-potential spaces $\tilde H^{\frac{n}{p},p}(Ω)$ into Orlicz spaces for an arbitrary domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ with finite measure. In particular we prove $$\sup_{u\in \tilde H^{\frac{n}{p},p}(Ω), \;\|(-Δ)^{\frac{n}{2p}}u\|_{L^{p}(Ω)}\leq 1}\int_Ωe^{α_{n,p} |u|^\frac{p}{p-1}}dx \leq c_{n,p}|Ω|, $$ for a positive constant $α_{n,p}$ whose sharpness we also prove. We further extend this result to the case of Lorentz-spaces (i.e. $(-Δ)^\frac{n}{2p}u\in L^{(p,q)})$. The proofs are simple…
We give a new proof of the almost sharp Moser-Trudinger inequality on compact Riemannian manifolds based on the sharp Moser inequality on Euclidean spaces. In particular we can lower the smoothness requirement of the metric and apply the same approach to higher order Sobolev spaces and manifolds with boundary under several boundary conditions.
Let $(M,g)$ be a 2-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold. In this paper, we use the method of blowing up analysis to prove several Moser-Trdinger type inequalities for vector bundle over $(M,g)$. We also derive an upper bound of such inequalities under the assumption that blowing up occur.
In this article, we firstly study the cone Moser-Trudinger inequalities and their best exponents $α_2$ on both bounded and unbounded domains $\mathbb{R}^2_{+}$. Then, using the cone Moser-Trudinger inequalities, we study the existence of weak solutions to the nonlinear equation \begin{equation*} \left\{\begin{array}{ll} -Δ_{\mathbb{B}} u=f(x, u), &\mbox{in}\ x\in \mbox{int} (\mathbb{B}), \\ u= 0, &\mbox{on}\ \partial\mathbb{B}, \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} where $Δ_{\mathbb{B}}$ is Fuchsian type Laplace operator investigated with totally characteristic degeneracy on the boundary $x_1 =0…
In this paper we prove a sharp version of the Moser-Trudinger inequality for the Euler-Lagrange functional of a singular Toda system, motivated by the study of models in Chern-Simons theory. Our result extends those for the scalar case, as well as for the regular Toda system. We expect this inequality to be a basic tool to attack variationally the existence problem under general assumptions.
Continuing our previous work (Cohn, Lam, Lu, Yang, Nonlinear Analysis (2011), doi: 10.1016 /j.na.2011.09.053), we obtain a class of Trudinger-Moser inequalities on the entire Heisenberg group, which indicate what the best constants are. All the existing proofs of similar inequalities on unbounded domain of the Euclidean space or the Heisenberg group are based on rearrangement argument. In this note, we propose a new approach to solve this problem. Specifically we get the global Trudinger-Moser inequality by gluing local estimates with the help of cut-off functions. Our method still works for s…
The paper is concerned about a sharp form of Anisotropic Moser-Trudinger inequality which involves $L^{n}$ norm. Let \begin{equation*} λ_{1}(Ω) = \inf_{u\in W_0^{1,n}(Ω),u\not\equiv 0} ||F(\nabla u)||_{L^n(Ω)}^n / ||u||_{L^n(Ω)}^n \end{equation*} be the first eigenvalue associated with $n$-Finsler-Laplacian. using blowing up analysis, we obtain that \begin{equation*} \sup_{u\in W_{0}^{1,n}(Ω),||F(\nabla u)||_{L^n(Ω)} = 1} \int_Ωe^{λ_n (1+α||u||_{L^n (Ω)}^n)^{\frac{1}{n-1}} |u|^{\frac{n}{n-1}}}dx \end{equation*} is finite for any $0\leq α<λ_{1}(Ω)$,and the supremum is infinite for any $α\geq λ_…
This is a continuation of our previous work [13]. Let $(Σ,g)$ be a closed Riemann surface, where the metric $g$ has conical singularities at finite points. Suppose $\mathbf{G}$ is a group whose elements are isometries acting on $(Σ,g)$. Trudinger-Moser inequalities involving $\mathbf{G}$ are established via the method of blow-up analysis, and the corresponding extremals are also obtained. This extends previous results of Chen [7], Iula-Manicini [21], and the authors [13].
We study existence of maximizer for the Trudinger-Moser inequality with general nonlinearity of the critical growth on $R^2$, as well as on the disk. We derive a very sharp threshold nonlinearity between the existence and the non-existence in each case, in asymptotic expansions with respect to growth and decay of the function. The expansions are explicit, using Apéry's constant. We also obtain an asymptotic expansion for the exponential radial Sobolev inequality on $R^2$.
In this paper, we derive a sharp version of the singular Trudinger-Moser inequality, which was originally established by Adimurthi and Sandeep (Nonlinear Differ. Equ. Appl. 2007). Moreover, extremal functions for those singular Trudinger-Moser inequalities are also obtained. Our method is the blow-up analysis. Compared with our previous work (J. Differential Equations 2015), the essential difficulty caused by the presence of singularity is how to analyse the asymptotic behaviour of certain maximizing sequence near the blow-up point. We overcome this difficulty by combining two different classi…
We study the Dirichlet energy of non-negative radially symmetric critical points $u_μ$ of the Moser-Trudinger inequality on the unit disc in $\mathbb{R}^2$, and prove that it expands as $$4π+\frac{4π}{μ^{4}}+o(μ^{-4})\le \int_{B_1}|\nabla u_μ|^2dx\le 4π+\frac{6π}{μ^{4}}+o(μ^{-4}),\quad \text{as }μ\to\infty,$$ where $μ=u_μ(0)$ is the maximum of $u_μ$. As a consequence, we obtain a new proof of the Moser-Trudinger inequality, of the Carleson-Chang result about the existence of extremals, and of the Struwe and Lamm-Robert-Struwe multiplicity result in the supercritical regime (only in the case of…
The paper studies continutity of Moser nonlinearity in two dimensions with respect to weak convergence. Unlike the critical nonlinearity in the Sobolev inequality, which lacks weak continuity at any point, Moser functional fails to be weakly continuous only in an exceptional case of a concentrating sequence of functions from the Moser family (up to translations and the remainder vanishing in Sobolev norm). The argument is based on a structural description of the defect of weak converegence, analogous to the profile decomposition established by Solimini for Sobolev inequalities, but involving g…
