For scalar fully nonlinear partial differential equations depending on the Hessian andspatial coordinates, we present a general theory for obtaining comparison principles and well posedness for the associated Dirichlet problem with continuous boundary data. In particular, we treat admissible viscosity solutions of elliptic branches of the equation, where the nonlinearity need not be monotone on all of the space of symmetric N by N matrices. An elliptic branch (in the sense of Krylov, 1995) of the equation is encoded by a set valued map from the coordinate domain into the elliptic subsets of the symmetric matrices (an elliptic map). The nonlinearity will be monotone along this map and the degenerate elliptic PDE is replaced by the a differential inclusion. Weak solutions to such differential inclusions are defined by using the notion given by Harvey-Lawson (2009) in a pointwise manner. If the elliptic map is uniformly upper semicontinuous, we show that the comparison principle holds for these weak solutions and that Perron's method yields a unique continuous solution to the associated abstract Dirichlet problem provided that the boundary is suitably convex with respect to the elliptic mapand its dual in the sense of Harvey and Lawson. When the map encodes an elliptic branch of a given PDE, these soluitions are shown to be admissible viscosity solutions of the PDE problem. Various applications are described in terms of structural conditions which ensure the existence of the needed elliptic map. Examples include non-totally degenerate equations and equations involving the eigenvalues of the Hessian and their perturbations. In certain situations, the methods employed here will be shown to operate freely, while classical viscosity approaches may not.
In this paper, we investigate the vanishing viscosity limit for the 3D nonhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with a slip boundary condition. We establish the local well-posedness of the strong solutions for initial boundary value problems for such systems. Furthermore, the vanishing viscosity limit process is established and a strong rate of convergence is obtained as the boundary of the domain is flat. In addition, it is needed to add some additional condition for density to match well the boundary condition.
We establish the equivalence between weak and viscosity solutions to the nonhomogeneous double phase equation with lower-order term $$ -{\rm div}(|Du|^{p-2}Du+a(x)|Du|^{q-2}Du)=f(x,u,Du),\quad 1<p\le q<\infty, a(x)\ge0. $$ We find some appropriate hypotheses on the coefficient $a(x)$, the exponents $p, q$ and the nonlinear term $f$ to show that the viscosity solutions with {\em a priori} Lipschitz continuity are weak solutions of such equation by virtue of the $\inf$($\sup$)-convolution techniques. The reverse implication can be concluded through comparison principles. Moreover, we verify that…

Global well-posedness and exponential decay of 2D nonhomogeneous Navier-Stokes and magnetohydrodynamic equations with density-dependent viscosity and vacuum
We study global well-posedness of strong solutions for the nonhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity and initial density allowing vanish in $\mathbb{R}^2$. Applying a logarithmic interpolation inequality and delicate energy estimates, we show the global existence of a unique strong solution provided that $\|\nablaμ(ρ_0)\|_{L^q}$ is suitably small, which improves the previous result of Huang and Wang [SIAM J. Math. Anal. 46, 1771--1788 (2014)] to the whole space case. Moreover, we also derive exponential decay rates of the solution. In particular, there is no need …
We consider the global existence and large-time asymptotic behavior of strong solutions to the Cauchy problem of the three-dimensional nonhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity and vacuum. We establish some key a priori exponential decay-in-time rates of the strong solutions. Then after using these estimates, we also obtain the global existence of strong solutions in the whole three-dimensional space, provided that the initial velocity is suitably small in the $\dot H^β$-norm for some $β\in(1/2,1].$ Note that this result is proved without any smalln…
We obtain an error estimate between viscosity solutions and δ-viscosity solutions of nonhomogeneous fully nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations. The main assumption, besides uniform ellipticity, is that the nonlinearity is Lipschitz-continuous in space with linear growth in the Hessian. We also establish a rate of convergence for monotone and consistent finite difference approximation schemes for such equations.
Global Well-posedness of Strong Solutions to the Cauchy Problem of 2D Nonhomogeneous Navier-Stokes Equations with Density-Dependent Viscosity and Vacuum
We investigate the regularity of the solutions for a class of degenerate/singular fully nonlinear nonlocal equations. In the degenerate scenario, we establish that there exists at least one viscosity solution of class $C_{loc}^{1, α}$, for some constant $α\in (0, 1)$. In addition, under suitable conditions on $σ$, we prove regularity estimates in Hölder spaces for any viscosity solution. We also examine the singular setting and prove Hölder regularity estimates for the gradient of the solutions.
We give a simple proof of the strong maximum principle for viscosity subsolutions of fully nonlinear elliptic PDEs on the form $$ F(x,u,Du,D^2u) = 0 $$ under suitable structure conditions on the equation allowing for non-Lipschitz growth in the gradient terms. In case of smooth boundaries, we also prove the Hopf lemma, the boundary Harnack inequality and that positive viscosity solutions vanishing on a portion of the boundary are comparable with the distance function near the boundary. Our results apply to weak solutions of an eigenvalue problem for the variable exponent $p$-Laplacian.
We introduce a new class of quasi-linear parabolic equations involving nonhomogeneous degeneracy or/and singularity $$ \partial_t u=[|D u|^q+a(x,t)|D u|^s]\left(Δu+(p-2)\left\langle D^2 u\frac{D u}{|D u|},\frac{D u}{|D u|}\right\rangle\right), $$ where $1<p<\infty$, $-1<q\leq s<\infty$ and $a(x,t)\ge 0$. The motivation to investigate this model stems not only from the connections to tug-of-war like stochastic games with noise, but also from the non-standard growth problems of double phase type. According to different values of $q,s$, such equations include nonhomogeneous degeneracy or singular…
The nonhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity is studied in three-dimensional (3D) exterior domains with nonslip or slip boundary conditions. We prove that the strong solutions exists globally in time provided that the gradient of the initial velocity is suitably small. Here the initial density is allowed to contain vacuum states. Moreover, after developing some new techniques and methods, the large-time behavior of the strong solutions with exponential decay-in-time rates is also obtained.
The validity of the comparison principle in variable coefficient fully nonlinear gradient free potential theory is examined and then used to prove the comparison principle for fully nonlinear partial differential equations which determine a suitable potential theory. The approach combines the notions of proper elliptic branches inspired by Krylov (Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 1995) with the monotonicity-duality method initiated by Harvey and Lawson (Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 2009). In the variable coefficient nonlinear potential theory, a special role is played by the Hausdorff continuity of the prope…
Existence theorems for the steady-state Navier-Stokes equations with nonhomogeneous slip boundary conditions in two-dimensional multiply-connected bounded domains
Classical vorticity solution branches of the three dimensional incompressible Euler equation are constructed where a velocity component can blow up at some point after finite time for regular data in H2. Furthermore, vorticity can blow up after finite time for data in H2, and there are classical solution branches with regular data which develop weak singularities at some point of space time after finite time. The construction of these time-local solution branches is by viscosity limits of viscosity extensions of time-reversed Euler-type equations. The short time (weak) singularities are then i…
We study fully nonlinear parabolic equations in nondivergence form with oblique boundary conditions. An optimal and global Calderón-Zygmund estimate is obtained by proving that the Hessian of the viscosity solution to the oblique boundary problem is as integrable as the nonhomogeneous term in $L^{p}$ spaces under minimal regularity requirement on the nonlinear operator, the boundary data and the boundary of the domain.
We show the existence of global-in-time weak solutions to a general class of coupled bead-spring chain models that arise from the kinetic theory of dilute solutions of nonhomogeneous polymeric liquids with noninteracting polymer chains, with finitely extensible nonlinear elastic (FENE) spring potentials. The class of models under consideration involves the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with variable density and density-dependent dynamic viscosity in a bounded domain in two and three space dimensions, for the density, the velocity and the pressure of the fluid, with an elastic…
We consider enstrophy dissipation in two-dimensional (2D) Navier-Stokes flows and focus on how this quantity behaves in thelimit of vanishing viscosity. After recalling a number of a priori estimates providing lower and upper bounds on this quantity, we state an optimization problem aimed at probing the sharpness of these estimates as functions of viscosity. More precisely, solutions of this problem are the initial conditions with fixed palinstrophy and possessing the property that the resulting 2D Navier-Stokes flows locally maximize the enstrophy dissipation over a given time window. This pr…
We study the nonhomogeneous Dirichlet problem for first order Hamilton-Jacobi equations associated with Tonelli Hamiltonians on a bounded domain $Ω$ of $\R^n$ assuming the energy level to be supercritical. First, we show that the viscosity (weak KAM) solution of such a problem is Lipschitz continuous and locally semiconcave in $Ω$. Then, we analyse the singular set of a solution showing that singularities propagate along suitable curves, the so-called generalized characteristics, and that such curves stay singular unless they reach the boundary of $Ω$. Moreover, we prove that the latter is nev…
