Consider the equivariant wave map equation from Minkowski space to a rotationnally symmetric manifold which has an equator (example: the sphere). In dimension 3, this article gives a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a smooth self-similar blow up profile. More generally, we study the relation between 1. the minimizing properties of the equator map for the (elliptic) Dirichlet energy and 2. the existence of a smooth blow-up profile for the (hyperbolic) wave map problem. Several applications of this approach are described.
Motivated by recent progress on a spinorial analogue of the Yamabe problem in the geometric literature, we study a conformally invariant spinor field equation on the $m$-sphere, $m\geq2$. Via variational methods, we study analytic aspects of the associated energy functional, culminating in a blow-up analysis.
We consider the blow-up of solutions for a semilinear reaction diffusion equation with exponential reaction term. It is know that certain solutions that can be continued beyond the blow-up time possess a nonconstant selfsimilar blow-up profile. Our aim is to find the final time blow-up profile for such solutions. The proof is based on general ideas using semigroup estimates. The same approach works also for the power nonlinearity.
We consider the semilinear heat equation with a superlinear power nonlinearity in the Sobolev subcritical range. We construct a solution which blows up in finite time only at the origin, with a completely new blow-up profile, which is cross-shaped. Our method is general and extends to the construction of other solutions blowing up only at the origin, with a large variety of blow-up profiles, degenerate or not.
We consider in this paper a perturbation of the standard semilinear heat equation by a term involving the space derivative and a non-local term. In some earlier work (Abdelhedi-Zaag JDE 2021), we constructed a blow-up solution for that equation, and showed that it blows up (at least) at the origin. We also derived the so called "intermediate blow-up profile". In this paper, we prove the single point blow-up property and determine the final blow-up profile.
We construct a solution to a complex nonlinear heat equation which blows up in finite time $T$ only at one blow-up point. We also give a sharp description of its blow-up profile. The proof relies on the reduction of the problem to a finite dimensional one and the use of index theory to conclude. We note that the real and imaginary parts of the constructed solution blow up simultaneously.
We study the Chandrasekhar variational model for neutron stars, with or without an external potential. We prove the existence of minimizers when the attractive interaction strength $τ$ is strictly smaller than the Chandrasekhar limit $τ_c$ and investigate the blow-up phenomenon in the limit $τ\uparrow τ_{c}$. We show that the blow-up profile of the minimizer(s) is given by the Lane-Emden solution.
In this paper we develop a monotonicity formula for elliptic systems with Neumann boundary coupling, proving unique continuation and classification of blow-up profiles. As an application, we obtain strong unique continuation for some fourth order equations and higher order fractional problems.
We study the blow up profiles associated to the following second order reaction-diffusion equation with non-homogeneous reaction: $$ \partial_tu=\partial_{xx}(u^m) + |x|^σu, $$ with $σ>0$. Through this study, we show that the non-homogeneous coefficient $|x|^σ$ has a strong influence on the blow up behavior of the solutions. First of all, it follows that finite time blow up occurs for self-similar solutions $u$, a feature that does not appear in the well known autonomous case $σ=0$. Moreover, we show that there are three different types of blow up self-similar profiles, depending on whether th…
We classify the self-similar blow-up profiles for the following reaction-diffusion equation with critical strong weighted reaction and unbounded weight: $$ \partial_tu=\partial_{xx}(u^m) + |x|^σu^p, $$ posed for $x\in\real$, $t\geq0$, where $m>1$, $0<p<1$ such that $m+p=2$ and $σ>2$ completing the analysis performed in a recent work where this very interesting critical case was left aside. We show that finite time blow-up solutions in self-similar form exist for $σ>2$. Moreover all the blow-up profiles have compact support and their supports are \emph{localized}: there exists an explicit $η>0$…
We consider a blow-up solution for the semilinear wave equation in $N$ dimensions, with subconformal power nonlinearity. Introducing $\RR_0$ the set of non-characteristic points with the Lorentz transform of the space-independent solution as asymptotic profile, we show that $\RR_0$ is open and that the blow-up surface is of class $C^1$ on $\RR_0$. Then, we show the stability of $\RR_0$ with respect to initial data.
We study, under the radial symmetry assumption, the solutions to the fractional Schrödinger equations of critical nonlinearity in $\mathbb R^{1+d}, d \geq 2$, with Lévy index ${2d}/({2d-1}) < \al < 2$. We firstly prove the linear profile decomposition and then apply it to investigate the properties of the blowup solutions of the nonlinear equations with mass-critical Hartree type nonlineartity.
In this paper, we consider the standard semilinear heat equation \begin{eqnarray*} \partial_t u = Δu + |u|^{p-1}u, \quad p >1. \end{eqnarray*} The determination of the (believed to be) generic blowup profile is well-established in the literature, with the solution blowing up only at one point. Though the blow-up of the gradient of the solution is a direct consequence of the single-point blow-up property and the mean value theorem, there is no determination of the final blowup profile for the gradient in the literature, up to our knowledge. In this paper, we refine the construction technique of…
Following our previous paper in the radial case, we consider blow-up type II solutions to the energy-critical focusing wave equation. Let W be the unique radial positive stationary solution of the equation. Up to the symmetries of the equation, under an appropriate smallness assumption, any type II blow-up solution is asymptotically a regular solution plus a rescaled Lorentz transform of W concentrating at the origin.
We study stable blow-up dynamics in the $L^2$-supercritical nonlinear Schrödinger equation in various dimensions. We first investigate the profile equation and extend the result of X.-P. Wang [38] and Budd et al. [4] on the existence and local uniqueness of solutions of the cubic profile equation to other $L^2$-supercritical nonlinearities and dimensions $d \geq 2$. We then numerically observe the multi-bump structure of such solutions, and in particular, exhibit the $Q_{1,0}$ solution, a candidate for the stable blow-up profile. Next, using the dynamic rescaling method, we investigate stable …
We consider the nonlinear heat equation with a nonlinear gradient term: $\partial_t u =Δu+μ|\nabla u|^q+|u|^{p-1}u,\; μ>0,\; q=2p/(p+1),\; p>3,\; t\in (0,T),\; x\in \R^N.$ We construct a solution which blows up in finite time $T>0.$ We also give a sharp description of its blow-up profile and show that it is stable with respect to perturbations in initial data. The proof relies on the reduction of the problem to a finite dimensional one, and uses the index theory to conclude. The blow-up profile does not scale as $(T-t)^{1/2}|\log(T-t)|^{1/2},$ like in the standard nonlinear heat equation, i.e.…
We study the self-similar blow-up profiles associated to the following second order reaction-diffusion equation with strong weighted reaction and unbounded weight: $$ \partial_tu=\partial_{xx}(u^m) + |x|^σu^p, $$ posed for $x\in\real$, $t\geq0$, where $m>1$, $0<p<1$ and $σ>2(1-p)/(m-1)$. As a first outcome, we show that finite time blow-up solutions in self-similar form exist for $m+p>2$ and $σ$ in the considered range, a fact that is completely new: in the already studied reaction-diffusion equation without weights there is no finite time blow-up when $p<1$. We moreover prove that, if the con…
We construct radially symmetric self-similar blow-up profiles for the mass supercritical nonlinear Schrödinger equation $i\partial_t u + Δu + |u|^{p-1}u=0$ on $\mathbf{R}^d$, close to the mass critical case and for any space dimension $d\ge 1$. These profiles bifurcate from the ground state solitary wave. The argument relies on the classical matched asymptotics method suggested in [Sulem, C.; Sulem, P.-L., The nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Self-focusing and wave collapse. Applied Mathematical Sciences, 139. Springer-Verlag, New York, 1999] which needs to be applied in a degenerate case due t…
The generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations are a class of Hamiltonian systems in infinite dimension derived from the KdV equation where the quadratic term is replaced by a higher order power term. These equations have two conservation laws in the energy space H^1(L^2 norm and energy). We consider in this paper the {\it critical} generalized KdV equation, which corresponds to the smallest power of the nonlinearity such that the two conservation laws do not imply a bound in H^1 uniform in time for all H^1 solutions (and thus global existence). From [15], there do exist for this equation solutio…
We consider the 1D nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with focusing \emph{point nonlinearity}, $$i\partial_tψ+ \partial_x^2ψ+ δ|ψ|^{p-1}ψ= 0$$ where $δ=δ(x)$ is the delta function supported at the origin. In the $L^2$ supercritical setting $p>3$, we construct self-similar blow-up solutions belonging to the energy space $L_x^\infty \cap \dot H_x^1$. This is reduced to finding outgoing solutions of a certain stationary profile equation. All outgoing solutions to the profile equation are obtained by using parabolic Weber functions and solving the jump condition at $x=0$ imposed by the $δ$ term.…
In this paper, we consider a blow-up solution for the complex-valued semilinear wave equation with power nonlinearity in one space dimension. We first characterize all the solutions of the associated stationary problem as a two-parameter family. Then, we use a dynamical system formulation to show that the solution in self-similar variables approaches some particular stationary one in the energy norm, in the non-characteristic case. This gives the blow-up profile for the original equation in the non-characteristic case. Our analysis is not just a simple adaptation of the already handled real ca…
In this paper we introduce the channel of energy argument to the study of energy critical wave maps into the sphere. More precisely, we prove a channel of energy type inequality for small energy wave maps, and as an application we show that for a wave map that has energy just above the degree one harmonic maps and that blows up in finite time, the solution asymptotically de-couples into a regular part plus a traveling wave with small momentum, in the energy space. In particular, the only possible form of energy concentration is through the concentration of traveling waves. This is often called…
In this paper, the finite time blow-up of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for full Euler-Poisson equations and isentropic Euler-Poisson equations with repulsive forces or attractive forces in high dimensions $(n\geq3)$ is proved for a large class of initial data. It is not required that the initial data has compact support or contains vacuum in any finite regions.
We construct $C^\infty$ solutions to the one-dimensional nonlinear wave equation $$ u_{tt} - u_{xx} - \tfrac{2(p+2)}{p^2} |u|^p u=0 \quad \text{with} \quad p>0 $$ that blow up on any prescribed uniformly space-like $C^\infty$ hypersurface. As a corollary, we show that smooth solutions can blow up (at the first instant) on an arbitrary compact set. We also construct solutions that blow up on general space-like $C^k$ hypersurfaces, but only when $4/p$ is not an integer and $k > (3p+4)/p$.
We refine the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the semilinear heat equation with Sobolev subcritical power nonlinearity which blow up in some finite time at a blow-up point where the (supposed to be generic) profile holds. In order to obtain this refinement, we have to abandon the explicit profile function as a first order approximation, and take a non explicit function as a first order description of the singular behavior. This non explicit function is in fact a special solution which we construct, obeying some refined prescribed behavior. The construction relies on the reduction of the pr…
The paper is concerned with the Bose-Einstein condensate described by the attractive Gross-Pitaevskii equation in R 2 , where the external potential is unbounded from below. We show that when the interaction strength increases to a critical value, the Gross-Pitaevskii minimizer collapses to one singular point and we analyze the details of the collapse exactly up to the leading order.
Consider the energy critical focusing wave equation on the Euclidian space. A blow-up type II solution of this equation is a solution which has finite time of existence but stays bounded in the energy space. The aim of this work is to exhibit universal properties of such solutions. Let W be the unique radial positive stationary solution of the equation. Our main result is that in dimension 3, under an appropriate smallness assumption, any type II blow-up radial solution is essentially the sum of a rescaled W concentrating at the origin and a small remainder which is continuous with respect to …
In this paper we prove that all initially-smooth solutions of the Euler-Weil-Petersson equation, which describes geodesics on the universal Teichmüller space under the Weil-Petersson metric, will remain smooth for all time. This extends the work of Escher-Kolev for strong Riemannian metrics to the borderline case of $H^{3/2}$ metrics. In addition we show that all initially-smooth solutions of the Wunsch equation, which describes geodesics on the universal Teichmüller curve under the Velling-Kirillov metric, must blow up in finite time due to wave breaking, extending work of Castro-Córdoba and …
It is shown that the one-dimensional or two-dimensional radially symmetric isothermal compressible Navier-Stokes system has no non-trivial global smooth solutions if the initial density is compactly supported. This result is a generalization of Xin's work \cite{Xin98} to the isothermal case.
We construct a periodic solution to the semilinear heat equation with power nonlinearity, in one space dimension, which blows up in finite time $T$ only at one blow-up point. We also give a sharp description of its blow-up profile. The proof relies on the reduction of the problem to a finite dimensional one and the use of index theory to conclude. Thanks to the geometrical interpretation of the finite-dimensional parameters in terms of the blow-up time and blow-up point, we derive the stability of the constructed solution with respect to initial data.
In this paper we study the geometry of first time singularities of the mean curvature flow. By the curvature pinching estimate of Huisken and Sinestrari, we prove that a mean curvature flow of hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space $\R^{n+1}$ with positive mean curvature is $κ$-noncollapsing, and a blow-up sequence converges locally smoothly along a subsequence to a smooth, convex blow-up solution. As a consequence we obtain a local Harnack inequality for the mean convex flow.
We consider the energy critical Schrödinger map problem with the 2-sphere target for equivariant initial data of homotopy index $k=1$. We show the existence of a codimension one set of smooth well localized initial data arbitrarily close to the ground state harmonic map in the energy critical norm, which generates finite time blow up solutions. We give a sharp description of the corresponding singularity formation which occurs by concentration of a universal bubble of energy.
We exhibit $\mathcal C^{\infty}$ type II blow up solutions to the focusing energy critical wave equation in dimension $N=4$. These solutions admit near blow up time a decomposiiton $u(t,x)=1/l(t)(Q+e(t))(x/l(t)}}$ with $|e(t),\pa_t e(t)|_{\dot{H}^1\times L^2}<<1$ where $Q$ is the extremizing profile of the Sobolev embedding $\dot{H}^1\subset L^{2^*}$, and a blow up speed $l(t)=(T-t)e^{-\sqrt{|\log (T-t)|}(1+o(1))}$ as $t\to T.$
In this paper we study dynamical properties of blowup solutions to the focusing mass-critical nonlinear fractional Schrödinger equation. We establish a profile decomposition and a compactness lemma related to the equation. As a result, we obtain the $L^2$-concentration and the limiting profile with minimal mass of blowup solutions.

Under the validity of the positive mass theorem, the Yamabe flow on a smooth compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $N \ge 3$ is known to exist for all time $t$ and converges to a solution to the Yamabe problem as $t \to \infty$. We prove that if a suitable perturbation, which may be smooth and arbitrarily small, is imposed on the Yamabe flow on any given Riemannian manifold $M$ of dimension $N \ge 5$, the resulting flow may blow up at multiple points on $M$ in the infinite time. Our proof is constructive, and indeed we construct such a flow by using solutions of the Yamabe problem on the un…
We consider the gravitational collapse for neutron stars in the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory. We prove that when the number particle becomes large and the gravitational constant is small such that the attractive interaction strength approaches the Chandrasekhar limit mass slowly, the minimizers develop a universal blow-up profile. It is given by the Lane-Emden solution.
We consider the diffusive Hamilton-Jacobi equation $$u_t-Δu=|\nabla u|^p,$$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions in two space dimensions, which arises in the KPZ model of growing interfaces. For $p>2$, solutions may develop gradient singularities on the boundary in finite time, and examples of single-point gradient blowup on the boundary are known, but the space-profile in the tangential direction has remained a completely open problem. In the parameter range $2<p\le 3$, for the case of a flat boundary and an isolated singularity at the origin, we give an answer to this question, obtaining the p…
We consider a vector-valued blow-up solution with values in $\mathbb{R}^m$ for the semilinear wave equation with power nonlinearity in one space dimension (this is a system of PDEs). We first characterize all the solutions of the associated stationary problem as an m-parameter family. Then, we show that the solution in self-similar variables approaches some particular stationary one in the energy norm, in the non-characteristic cases. Our analysis is not just a simple adaptation of the already handled real or complex case. In particular, there is a new structure of the set a stationary solutio…
We consider the focusing energy-critical wave equation in space dimension $N\in \{3, 4, 5\}$ for radial data. We study type II blow-up solutions which concentrate one bubble of energy. It is known that such solutions decompose in the energy space as a sum of the bubble and an asymptotic profile. We prove bounds on the blow-up speed in the case when the asymptotic profile is sufficiently regular. These bounds are optimal in dimension $N = 5$. We also prove that if the asymptotic profile is sufficiently regular, then it cannot be strictly negative at the origin.
In this paper we consider smooth solutions of the Navier--Stokes equations with a linear dependence on the spatial variable. We reduce the evolution of these solutions to a matrix ODE, and show that there are such solutions that blowup in finite-time. Note that because these solutions have linear growth at infinity, this blowup is not a counterexample disproving the global regularity of strong solutions of the Navier--Stokes equations, as strong solutions must have sufficient decay at infinity. This paper does not resolve the Millennium Problem. Nonetheless, these solutions do exhibit several …
In this paper, we will show the blow-up of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for the full compressible Navier-Stokes equations and isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with constant and degenerate viscosities in arbitrary dimensions under some restrictions on the initial data. In particular, the results hold true for the full compressible Euler equations and isentropic compressible Euler equations and the blow-up time can be computed in a more precise way. It is not required that the initial data has compact support or contain vacuum in any finite regions. Moreover, a simplifie…
We consider co-rotational wave maps from (1+3)-dimensional Minkowski space into the three-sphere. This model exhibits an explicit blowup solution and we prove the asymptotic nonlinear stability of this solution in the whole space under small perturbations of the initial data. The key ingredient is the introduction of a novel coordinate system that allows one to track the evolution past the blowup time and almost up to the Cauchy horizon of the singularity. As a consequence, we also obtain a result on continuation beyond blowup.

In this paper, we consider the following complex-valued semilinear heat equation \begin{eqnarray*} \partial_t u = Δu + u^p, u \in \mathbb{C}, \end{eqnarray*} in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^n$, where $ p \in \mathbb{N}, p \geq 2$. We aim at constructing for this equation a complex solution $u = u_1 + i u_2$, which blows up in finite time $T$ and only at one blowup point $a$, with the following estimates for the final profile \begin{eqnarray*} u(x,T) &\sim & \left[ \frac{(p-1)^2 |x-a|^2}{ 8 p |\ln|x-a||}\right]^{-\frac{1}{p-1}}, u_2(x,T) &\sim & \frac{2 p}{(p-1)^2} \left[ \frac{ (p-1)^2|x-a|^2}{…
For the 2-D quasilinear wave equation $\displaystyle \sum_{i,j=0}^2g_{ij}(\nabla u)\partial_{ij}u=0$ with coefficients independent of the solution $u$, a blowup result for small data solutions has been established in [1,2] provided that the null condition does not hold and a generic nondegeneracy condition on the initial data is fulfilled. In this paper, we are concerned with the more general 2-D quasilinear wave equation $\displaystyle \sum_{i,j=0}^2g_{ij}(u, \nabla u)\partial_{ij}u=0$ with coefficients that depend simultaneously on $u$ and $\nabla u$. When the null condition does not hold an…
We consider in this paper a class of strongly perturbed semilinear wave equations with a non-characteristic point in one space dimension, for general initial data. Working in the framework of similarity variables, in \cite {MZ} Merle and Zaag constructed an explicit stationary solution of the unperturbed problem and proved an exponential convergence to this family of solutions. If we follow the same strategy under our strongly perturbed equation we just obtain a polynomial convergence which is a rough estimate compared to the one obtained in the unperturbed problem. In order to refine this app…
