In this paper, we consider the standard semilinear heat equation \begin{eqnarray*} \partial_t u = Δu + |u|^{p-1}u, \quad p >1. \end{eqnarray*}
The determination of the (believed to be) generic blowup profile is well-established in the literature, with the solution blowing up only at one point. Though the blow-up of the gradient of the solution is a direct consequence of the single-point blow-up property and the mean value theorem, there is no determination of the final blowup profile for the gradient in the literature, up to our knowledge. In this paper, we refine the construction technique of Bricmont-Kupiainen 1994 and Merle-Zaag 1997, and derive the following profile for the gradient: %and derive construct a blowup solution to the above equation with the gradient's asymptotic $$ \nabla u(x,T) \sim - \frac{\sqrt{2b}}{p-1} \frac{x}{|x| \sqrt{ |\ln|x||}} \left[\frac{b|x|^2}{2|\ln|x||} \right]^{-\frac{p+1}{2(p-1)}} \text{ as } x \to 0, $$ where $ b =\frac{(p-1)^2}{4p}$, which is as expected the gradient of the well-known blowup profile of the solution.
We study a class of semilinear elliptic equations with constraints in higher dimension. It is known that several mathematical structures of the problem are closed to those of the Liouville equation in dimension two. In this paper, we establish a classification of entire solutions, the $\sup + \inf$ type inequality and the quantized blowup mechanism.
Refined structures of blowup for non-collapsing maximal solution to a semilinear parabolic equation are studied. We will prove that the blowup set is empty for non-collapsing blowing-up in subcritical case, and all finite time non-collapsing blowing-up must be type II in critical case. When p>p_S=(N+2)/(N-2) for N>=3, the Hausdorff dimension of the blowup set for maximal solution whose energy is non-collapsing is shown to be no greater than N-2-4/(p-1), which answers a question proposed in [7] positively. At the end of this paper, we also present some new examples of collapsing and non-collaps…
We consider the semilinear heat equation $u_t=Δu+|u|^{p-1}u-|u|^{q-1}u$ in $\mathbb{R}^n\times(0,T)$, where $n=5$, $p=\frac{n+2}{n-2}$ and $q\in(0,1)$. By the presence of $-|u|^{q-1}u$, this equation has a finite time extinction property. We show the existence of a new type of blowup solutions by using this property. In fact, we obtain such blowup solutions by connecting a specific blowup solution of $u_t=Δu+|u|^{p-1}u$ and a specific solution of $u_t=Δu-|u|^{q-1}u$, and by adding correction terms.
We consider the initial value problem for the semilinear wave equation with time-dependent effective damping. The interest is the behavior of lifespan of solutions in view of the asymptotic profile of the damping as $t\to \infty$. The result of this paper is the sharp lifespan estimates of blowup solutions for general time-dependent damping including threshold cases between effective and overdamping.
We consider the initial-boundary value problem of semilinear wave equation with nonlinearity $|u|^p$ in exterior domain in $\mathbf{R}^N$ $(N\geq 3)$. Especially, the lifespan of blowup solutions with small initial data are studied. The result gives upper bounds of lifespan which is essentially the same as the Cauchy problem in $\mathbf{R}^N$. At least in the case $N=4$, their estimates are sharp in view of the work by Zha--Zhou (2015). The idea of the proof is to use special solutions to linear wave equation with Dirichlet boundary condition which are constructed via an argument based on Waka…
We consider non-local in time semilinear subdiffusion equations on a bounded domain, where the kernel in the integro-differential operator belongs to a large class, which covers many relevant cases from physics applications, in particular the important case of fractional dynamics. The elliptic operator in the equation is given in divergence form with bounded measurable coefficients. We prove a well-posedness result in the setting of bounded weak solutions and study the stability and instability of the zero function in the special case where the nonlinearity vanishes at 0. We also establish a b…
We consider in this note the semilinear heat system $$\partial_t u = Δu + f(v), \quad \partial_t v = μΔv + g(u), \quad μ> 0,$$ where the nonlinearity has no gradient structure taking of the particular form $$f(v) = v|v|^{p-1} \quad \text{and}\quad g(u) = u|u|^{q-1} \quad \text{with} \quad p, q > 1, $$ or $$f(v) = e^{pv}\quad \text{and} \quad g(u) = e^{qu} \quad \text{with} \quad p,q > 0.$$ We exhibit type I blowup solutions for this system and give a precise description of its blowup profiles. The method relies on two-step procedure: the reduction of the problem to a finite dimensional one via…
We consider the higher-order semilinear parabolic equation $$ \partial_t u = -(-Δ)^{m} u + u|u|^{p-1}, $$ in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^N$, where $p > 1$ and $m \geq 1$ is an odd integer. We exhibit type I non self-similar blowup solutions for this equation and obtain a sharp description of its asymptotic behavior. The method of construction relies on the spectral analysis of a non self-adjoint linearized operator in an appropriate scaled variables setting. In view of known spectral and sectorial properties of the linearized operator obtained by [Galaktionov, rspa2011], we revisit the techniq…
We consider the semilinear heat equation \begin{eqnarray*} \partial_t u = Δu + |u|^{p-1} u \ln ^α( u^2 +2), \end{eqnarray*} in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^n$, where $p > 1$ and $ α\in \mathbb{R}$. Unlike the standard case $α= 0$, this equation is not scaling invariant. We construct for this equation a solution which blows up in finite time $T$ only at one blowup point $a$, according to the following asymptotic dynamics: \begin{eqnarray*} u(x,t) \sim ψ(t) \left(1 + \frac{(p-1)|x-a|^2}{4p(T -t)|\ln(T -t)|} \right)^{-\frac{1}{p-1}} \text{ as } t \to T, \end{eqnarray*} where $ψ(t)$ is the unique p…
Semilinear elliptic equations which give rise to solutions blowing up at the boundary are perturbed by a Hardy potential. The size of this potential effects the existence of a certain type of solutions (large solutions): if the potential is too small, then no large solution exists. The presence of the Hardy potential requires a new definition of large solutions, following the pattern of the associated linear problem. Nonexistence and existence results for different types of solutions will be given. Our considerations are based on a Phragmen-Lindelof type theorem which enables us to classify th…
In this paper we report on numerical studies of formation of singularities for the semilinear wave equations with a focusing power nonlinearity $u_{tt} - Δu = u^{p}$ in three space dimensions. We show that for generic large initial data that lead to singularities, the spatial pattern of blowup can be described in terms of linearized perturbations about the fundamental self-similar (homogeneous in space) solution. We consider also non-generic initial data which are fine-tuned to the threshold for blowup and identify critical solutions that separate blowup from dispersal for some values of the e…
This paper is concerned with the blowup phenomena for initial value problem of semilinear wave equation with critical space-dependent damping term (DW:$V$). The main result of the present paper is to give a solution of the problem and to provide a sharp estimate for lifespan for such a solution when $\frac{N}{N-1}<p\leq p_S(N+V_0)$, where $p_S(N)$ is the Strauss exponent for (DW:$0$). The main idea of the proof is due to the technique of test functions for (DW:$0$) originated by Zhou--Han (2014, MR3169791). Moreover, we find a new threshold value $V_0=\frac{(N-1)^2}{N+1}$ for the coefficient o…
We consider the following parabolic system whose nonlinearity has no gradient structure: $$\left\{\begin{array}{ll} \partial_t u = Δu + |v|^{p-1}v, \quad & \partial_t v = μΔv + |u|^{q - 1}u,\\ u(\cdot, 0) = u_0, \quad & v(\cdot, 0) = v_0, \end{array}\right. $$ in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^N$, where $p, q > 1$ and $μ> 0$. We show the existence of initial data such that the corresponding solution to this system blows up in finite time $T(u_0, v_0)$ simultaneously in $u$ and $v$ only at one blowup point $a$, according to the following asymptotic dynamics: $$\left\{\begin{array}{c} u(x,t)\sim Γ\…
For a class of semi-linear elliptic equations with critical Sobolev exponents and boundary conditions, we prove point-wise estimates for blowup solutions and energy estimates. A special case of this class of equations is a locally defined prescribing scalar curvature and mean curvature type equation.
We concern the blow up problem to the scale invariant damping wave equations with sub-Strauss exponent. This problem has been studied by Lai, Takamura and Wakasa (\cite{Lai17}) and Ikeda and Sobajima \cite{Ikedapre} recently. In present paper, we extend the blowup exponent from $p_F(n)\leq p<p_S(n+2μ)$ to $1<p<p_S(n+μ)$ without small restriction on $μ$. Moreover, the upper bound of lifespan is derived with uniform estimate $T(\varepsilon)\leq C\varepsilon^{-2p(p-1)/γ(p,n+2μ)}$. This result extends the blowup result of semilinear wave equation and shows the wave-like behavior of scale invariant…
We study the blowup behavior for the focusing energy-supercritical semilinear wave equation in 3 space dimensions without symmetry assumptions on the data. We prove the stability of the ODE blowup profile.
We focus on the study of ground-states for the system of $M$ coupled semilinear Schrödinger equations with power-type nonlinearities and couplings. General results regarding existence and characterization are derived using a variational approach. We show the usefulness of such a characterization in several particular cases, including those for which uniqueness of ground-states is already known. Finally, we apply the results to find the optimal constant for the vector-valued Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality and we study global existence, $L^2$-concentration phenomena and blowup profile for the ev…
We study two toy models obtained after a slight modification of the nonlinearity of the usual doubly parabolic Keller-Segel system. For these toy models, both consisting of a system of two parabolic equations, we establish that for data which are, in a suitable sense, smaller than the diffusion parameter $τ$ in the equation for the chemoattractant, we obtain global solutions, and for some data larger than $τ$ , a finite time blowup. In this way, we check that our size condition for the global existence is sharp for large $τ$ , up to a logarithmic factor.
We study the blowup behavior of a class of strongly perturbed wave equations with a focusing supercritical power nonlinearity in three spatial dimensions. We show that the ODE blowup profile of the unperturbed equation still describes the asymptotics of stable blowup. As a consequence, stable ODE-type blowup is seen to be a universal phenomenon that exists in a large class of semilinear wave equations.
In this paper, we revisit the proof of the existence of a solution to the semilinear heat equation in one space dimension with a at blowup profile, already proved by Bricmont and Kupainen together with Herrero and Velázquez. Though our approach relies on the well celebrated method, based on the reduction of the problem to a finite dimensional one, then the use of a topological shooting method to solve the latter, the novelty of our approach lays in the use of a modulation technique to control the projection of the zero eigenmode arising in the problem. Up to our knowledge, this is the first ti…
We study nonexistence and existence of nontrivial positive solutions to the following semilinear elliptic inequality involving gradient terms \[ Δu+u^p\left|\nabla u\right|^q\leq0, \] on weighted graphs, where $(p,q)\in\mathbb{R}^2$. We give a complete classification of $(p,q)$ under which sharp volume growth assumptions are established.
This paper is concerned about the lifespan estimate to the Cauchy problem of semilinear damped wave equations with the Fujita critical exponent in high dimensions$(n\geq 4)$. We establish the sharp upper bound of the lifespan in the following form \begin{equation}\nonumber\\ \begin{aligned} T(\varepsilon)\leq \exp(C\varepsilon^{-\frac 2n}), \end{aligned} \end{equation} by using the heat kernel as the test function.
This paper is concerned with the blowup phenomena for initial-boundary value problem for certain semi linear parabolic, dispersive and hyperbolic equations in cone-like domain. The result proposes a unified treatment of estimates for lifespan of solutions to the problem by test function method. The Fujita exponent p=1 + 2/N appears as a threshold of blowup phenomena for small data when $C_{Σ}=R^N$ , but the case of cone-like domain with boundary the threshold changes and explicitly given via the first eigenvalue of corresponding Laplace-Beltrami operator with Dirichlet boundary condition as in…
The global existence for semilinear wave equations with space-dependent critical damping $\partial_t^2u-Δu+\frac{V_0}{|x|}\partial_t u=f(u)$ in an exterior domain is dealt with, where $f(u)=|u|^{p-1}u$ and $f(u)=|u|^p$ are in mind. Existence and non-existence of global-in-time solutions are discussed. To obtain global existence, a weighted energy estimate for the linear problem is crucial. The proof of such a weighted energy estimate contains an alternative proof of energy estimates established by Ikehata--Todorova--Yordanov [J.\ Math.\ Soc.\ Japan (2013), 183--236] but this clarifies the prec…
This paper is devoted to a proof of the conjecture in Takamura(2015) on the lower bound of the lifespan of solutions to semilinear wave equations in two space dimensions. The result is divided into two cases according to the total integral of the initial speed.
This paper is concerned with the blowup phenomena for initial value problem of semilinear wave equation with critical time-dependent damping term (DW). The result is the sharp upper bound of lifespan of solution with respect to the small parameter $\ep$ when $p_F(N)\leq p\leq p_0(N+μ)$, where $p_F(N)$ denotes the Fujita exponent for the nonlinear heat equations and $p_0(n)$ denotes the Strauss exponent for nonlinear wave equation in $n$-dimension with $μ=0$. Consequently, by connecting the result of D'Abbicco--Lucente--Reissig 2015, our result clarifies the threshold exponent $p_0(N+μ)$ for di…
The open question, which seems to be also the final part, in terms of studying the Cauchy problem for the weakly coupled system of damped wave equations or reaction-diffusion equations, is so far known as the sharp lifespan estimates in the critical case. In this paper, we mainly investigate lifespan estimates for solutions to the weakly coupled system of semilinear damped wave equations in the critical case. By using a suitable test function method associated with nonlinear differential inequalities, we catch upper bound estimates for the lifespan. Moreover, we establish polynomial-logarithmi…
By using the Strichartz esitmate and Picard iteration, we prove the subcritical(critical in some cases) global solution in $C_t H_x^s\cap C_t^1 H^{s-1}_x$ with small data for semilinear wave equation with nonlinearity of type $(\partial u)^k$($k\ge 1+\frac{4}{n-1}\vee 2$ and $(n,k)\neq (3,3)$). For $(n,k)=(3,3)$, we get the almost global existence. In addition, we give the global existence with radial data when $k> 1+\frac{2}{n-1}\vee 2$.
We consider the energy critical semilinear heat equation $$ \left\{\begin{aligned} &\partial_t u-Δu =|u|^{\frac{4}{n-2}}u &\mbox{in } {\mathbb R}^n\times(0,T),\\ &u(x,0)=u_0(x), \end{aligned}\right. $$ where $ n\geq 3$, $u_0\in L^\infty({\mathbb R}^n)$, and $T\in {\mathbb R}^+$ is the first blow up time. We prove that if $ n \geq 7$ and $ u_0 \geq 0$, then any blowup must be of Type I, i.e., \[\|u(\cdot, t)\|_{L^\infty({\mathbb R}^n)}\leq C(T-t)^{-\frac{1}{p-1}}.\] A similar result holds for bounded convex domains. The proof relies on a reverse inner-outer gluing mechanism and delicate analysi…
This paper is devoted to the study of semi-stable radial solutions $u\in H^1(B_1)$ of $-Δu=g(u) {in} B_1\setminus \{0\}$, where $g\in C^1(R)$ is a general nonlinearity and $B_1$ is the unit ball of $R^N$. We establish sharp pointwise estimates for such solutions. As an application of these results, we obtain optimal pointwise estimates for the extremal solution and its derivatives (up to order three) of the semilinear elliptic equation $-Δu=λf(u)$, posed in $B_1$, with Dirichlet data $u|_{\partial B_1}=0$, and a continuous, positive, nondecreasing and convex function $f$ on $[0,\infty)$ such t…
We analyze the blowup behaviour of solutions to the focusing nonlinear Klein--Gordon equation in spatial dimensions $d\geq 2$. We obtain upper bounds on the blowup rate, both globally in space and in light cones. The results are sharp in the conformal and sub-conformal cases. The argument relies on Lyapunov functionals derived from the dilation identity. We also prove that the critical Sobolev norm diverges near the blowup time.
We consider the semilinear heat equation $u_t=Δu+u^p$ on ${\mathbb R}^N$. Assuming that $N\ge 3$ and $p$ is greater than the Sobolev critical exponent $(N+2)/(N-2)$, we examine entire solutions (classical solutions defined for all $t\in {\mathbb R}$) and ancient solutions (classical solutions defined on $(-\infty,T)$ for some $T<\infty$). We prove a new Liouville-type theorem saying that if $p$ is greater than the Lepin exponent $p_L:=1+6/(N-10)$ ($p_L=\infty$ if $N\le 10$), then all positive bounded radial entire solutions are steady states. The theorem is not valid without the assumption of …
We consider semilinear wave equations with focusing power nonlinearities in odd space dimensions $d \geq 5$. We prove that for every $p > \frac{d+3}{d-1}$ there exists an open set of radial initial data in $H^{\frac{d+1}{2}} \times H^{\frac{d-1}{2}}$ such that the corresponding solution exists in a backward lightcone and approaches the ODE blowup profile. The result covers the entire range of energy supercritical nonlinearities and extends our previous work for the three-dimensional radial wave equation to higher space dimensions.
We study semilinear damped wave equations with power nonlinearity $|u|^p$ and initial data belonging to Sobolev spaces of negative order $\dot{H}^{-γ}$. In the present paper, we obtain a new critical exponent $p=p_{\mathrm{crit}}(n,γ):=1+\frac{4}{n+2γ}$ for some $γ\in(0,\frac{n}{2})$ and low dimensions in the framework of Soblev spaces of negative order. Precisely, global (in time) existence of small data Sobolev solutions of lower regularity is proved for $p>p_{\mathrm{crit}}(n,γ)$, and blow-up of weak solutions in finite time even for small data if $1<p<p_{\mathrm{crit}}(n,γ)$. Furthermore, …
We consider the equation $-Δu= |x|^α|u|^{p-1}u$ for any $α\geq 0$, either in $\mathbb R^2$ or in the unit ball $B$ of $\mathbb R^2$ centered at the origin with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. We give a sharp description of the asymptotic behavior as $p\rightarrow +\infty$ of all the radial solutions to these problems. In particular, we show that there is no uniform a priori bound (in $p$) for nodal solutions under Neumann or Dirichlet boundary conditions. This contrasts with the recently shown fact that positive solutions have uniform a priori bounds for $α=0$ and Dirichlet boundary …
We construct a solution for the Complex Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) equation in a general critical case, which blows up in finite time T only at one blow-up point. We also give a sharp description of its profile.
In this paper, we consider the following complex-valued semilinear heat equation \begin{eqnarray*} \partial_t u = Δu + u^p, u \in \mathbb{C}, \end{eqnarray*} in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^n$, where $ p \in \mathbb{N}, p \geq 2$. We aim at constructing for this equation a complex solution $u = u_1 + i u_2$, which blows up in finite time $T$ and only at one blowup point $a$, with the following estimates for the final profile \begin{eqnarray*} u(x,T) &\sim & \left[ \frac{(p-1)^2 |x-a|^2}{ 8 p |\ln|x-a||}\right]^{-\frac{1}{p-1}}, u_2(x,T) &\sim & \frac{2 p}{(p-1)^2} \left[ \frac{ (p-1)^2|x-a|^2}{…

We consider the following semilinear wave equation with time-dependent damping. \begin{align} \tag{NLDW} \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} \partial_t^2 u - Δu + b(t)\partial_t u = |u|^{p}, & (t,x) \in [0,T) \times \mathbb{R}^n, \\ u(0,x)=\varepsilon u_0(x), u_t(0,x)=\varepsilon u_1(x), & x \in \mathbb{R}^n, \end{array} \right. \end{align} where $n \in \mathbb{N}$, $p>1$, $\varepsilon>0$, and $b(t)\thickapprox (t+1)^{-β}$ with $β\in [-1,1)$. It is known that small data blow-up occurs when $1<p< p_F$ and, on the other hand, small data global existence holds when $p>p_F$, where $p_F:=1+2/n$ is the Fujita…
The final open part of Strauss' conjecture on semilinear wave equations was the blow-up theorem for the critical case in high dimensions. This problem was solved by Yordanov and Zhang in 2006, or Zhou in 2007 independently. But the estimate for the lifespan, the maximal existence time, of solutions was not clarified in both papers. In this paper, we refine their theorems and introduce a new iteration argument to get the sharp upper bound of the lifespan. As a result, with the sharp lower bound by Li and Zhou in 1995, the lifespan $T(\e)$ of solutions of $u_{tt}-Δu=u^2$ in $\R^4\times[0,\infty)…
This paper is concerned with semilinear equations in divergence form \[ \diver(A(x)Du) = f(u) \] where $f :\R \to [0,\infty)$ is nondecreasing. We prove a sharp Harnack type inequality for nonnegative solutions which is closely connected to the classical Keller-Osserman condition for the existence of entire solutions.
In this paper, we consider the heat flow for Yang-Mills connections on $\mathbb{R}^5 \times SO(5)$. In the $SO(5)-$equivariant setting, the Yang-Mills heat equation reduces to a single semilinear reaction-diffusion equation for which an explicit self-similar blowup solution was found by Weinkove \cite{Wei04}. We prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of this solution under small perturbations. In particular, we show that there exists an open set of initial conditions in a suitable topology such that the corresponding solutions blow up in finite time and converge to a non-trivial self-similar…
In this paper, we discuss the global existence of weak solutions to the semilinear damped wave equation \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} \partial_t^2u-Δu + \partial_tu = f(u) & \text{in}\ Ω\times (0,T), \\ u=0 & \text{on}\ \partialΩ\times (0,T), \\ u(0)=u_0, \partial_tu(0)=u_1 & \text{in}\ Ω, \end{cases} \end{equation*} in an exterior domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$ $(N\geq 2)$, where $f:\mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{R}$ is a smooth function behaves like $f(u)\sim |u|^p$. From the view point of weighted energy estimates given by Sobajima--Wakasugi \cite{SoWa4}, the existence of global-in-time solutions wi…
We prove a constructive stable ODE-type blowup result for open sets of solutions to a family of quasilinear wave equations in three spatial dimensions featuring a Riccati-type derivative-quadratic semilinear term. The singularity is more severe than a shock in that the solution itself blows up like the log of the distance to the blowup-time. We assume that the quasilinear terms satisfy certain structural assumptions, which in particular ensure that the "elliptic part" of the wave operator vanishes precisely at the singular points. The initial data are compactly supported and can be small or la…
This paper is devoted to studying the following two initial-boundary value problems for semilinear wave equations with variable coefficients on exterior domain with subcritical exponent in $n$ space dimensions: u_{tt}-partial_{i}(a_{ij}(x)\partial_{j}u)=|u|^{p}, (x,t)\in Ω^{c}\times(0,+\infty), n\geq 3 and u_{tt}-\partial_{i}(a_{ij}(x)\partial_{j}u)=|u_{t}|^{p}, (x,t)\in Ω^{c}\times (0,+\infty), n\geq 1, where $a_{ij}(x)=δ_{ij}, when |x|\geq R. The exponents $p$ satisfies $ 1<p<p_{1}(n)$ in (0.1), and $p \leq p_{2}(n)$ in (0.2), where $p_{1}(n)$ is the larger root of the quadratic equation (n-…
