This paper is concerned with the blowup phenomena for initial value problem of semilinear wave equation with critical space-dependent damping term (DW:$V$). The main result of the present paper is to give a solution of the problem and to provide a sharp estimate for lifespan for such a solution when $\frac{N}{N-1}<p\leq p_S(N+V_0)$, where $p_S(N)$ is the Strauss exponent for (DW:$0$). The main idea of the proof is due to the technique of test functions for (DW:$0$) originated by Zhou--Han (2014, MR3169791). Moreover, we find a new threshold value $V_0=\frac{(N-1)^2}{N+1}$ for the coefficient of critical and singular damping $|x|^{-1}$.
We study a class of semilinear elliptic equations with constraints in higher dimension. It is known that several mathematical structures of the problem are closed to those of the Liouville equation in dimension two. In this paper, we establish a classification of entire solutions, the $\sup + \inf$ type inequality and the quantized blowup mechanism.
Refined structures of blowup for non-collapsing maximal solution to a semilinear parabolic equation are studied. We will prove that the blowup set is empty for non-collapsing blowing-up in subcritical case, and all finite time non-collapsing blowing-up must be type II in critical case. When p>p_S=(N+2)/(N-2) for N>=3, the Hausdorff dimension of the blowup set for maximal solution whose energy is non-collapsing is shown to be no greater than N-2-4/(p-1), which answers a question proposed in [7] positively. At the end of this paper, we also present some new examples of collapsing and non-collaps…
We consider the semilinear heat equation $u_t=Δu+|u|^{p-1}u-|u|^{q-1}u$ in $\mathbb{R}^n\times(0,T)$, where $n=5$, $p=\frac{n+2}{n-2}$ and $q\in(0,1)$. By the presence of $-|u|^{q-1}u$, this equation has a finite time extinction property. We show the existence of a new type of blowup solutions by using this property. In fact, we obtain such blowup solutions by connecting a specific blowup solution of $u_t=Δu+|u|^{p-1}u$ and a specific solution of $u_t=Δu-|u|^{q-1}u$, and by adding correction terms.
We consider the initial value problem for the semilinear wave equation with time-dependent effective damping. The interest is the behavior of lifespan of solutions in view of the asymptotic profile of the damping as $t\to \infty$. The result of this paper is the sharp lifespan estimates of blowup solutions for general time-dependent damping including threshold cases between effective and overdamping.
We consider the initial-boundary value problem of semilinear wave equation with nonlinearity $|u|^p$ in exterior domain in $\mathbf{R}^N$ $(N\geq 3)$. Especially, the lifespan of blowup solutions with small initial data are studied. The result gives upper bounds of lifespan which is essentially the same as the Cauchy problem in $\mathbf{R}^N$. At least in the case $N=4$, their estimates are sharp in view of the work by Zha--Zhou (2015). The idea of the proof is to use special solutions to linear wave equation with Dirichlet boundary condition which are constructed via an argument based on Waka…
We consider non-local in time semilinear subdiffusion equations on a bounded domain, where the kernel in the integro-differential operator belongs to a large class, which covers many relevant cases from physics applications, in particular the important case of fractional dynamics. The elliptic operator in the equation is given in divergence form with bounded measurable coefficients. We prove a well-posedness result in the setting of bounded weak solutions and study the stability and instability of the zero function in the special case where the nonlinearity vanishes at 0. We also establish a b…
In this paper we report on numerical studies of formation of singularities for the semilinear wave equations with a focusing power nonlinearity $u_{tt} - Δu = u^{p}$ in three space dimensions. We show that for generic large initial data that lead to singularities, the spatial pattern of blowup can be described in terms of linearized perturbations about the fundamental self-similar (homogeneous in space) solution. We consider also non-generic initial data which are fine-tuned to the threshold for blowup and identify critical solutions that separate blowup from dispersal for some values of the e…
In this paper, we consider the standard semilinear heat equation \begin{eqnarray*} \partial_t u = Δu + |u|^{p-1}u, \quad p >1. \end{eqnarray*} The determination of the (believed to be) generic blowup profile is well-established in the literature, with the solution blowing up only at one point. Though the blow-up of the gradient of the solution is a direct consequence of the single-point blow-up property and the mean value theorem, there is no determination of the final blowup profile for the gradient in the literature, up to our knowledge. In this paper, we refine the construction technique of…
We consider in this note the semilinear heat system $$\partial_t u = Δu + f(v), \quad \partial_t v = μΔv + g(u), \quad μ> 0,$$ where the nonlinearity has no gradient structure taking of the particular form $$f(v) = v|v|^{p-1} \quad \text{and}\quad g(u) = u|u|^{q-1} \quad \text{with} \quad p, q > 1, $$ or $$f(v) = e^{pv}\quad \text{and} \quad g(u) = e^{qu} \quad \text{with} \quad p,q > 0.$$ We exhibit type I blowup solutions for this system and give a precise description of its blowup profiles. The method relies on two-step procedure: the reduction of the problem to a finite dimensional one via…
We consider the higher-order semilinear parabolic equation $$ \partial_t u = -(-Δ)^{m} u + u|u|^{p-1}, $$ in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^N$, where $p > 1$ and $m \geq 1$ is an odd integer. We exhibit type I non self-similar blowup solutions for this equation and obtain a sharp description of its asymptotic behavior. The method of construction relies on the spectral analysis of a non self-adjoint linearized operator in an appropriate scaled variables setting. In view of known spectral and sectorial properties of the linearized operator obtained by [Galaktionov, rspa2011], we revisit the techniq…
We consider the semilinear heat equation \begin{eqnarray*} \partial_t u = Δu + |u|^{p-1} u \ln ^α( u^2 +2), \end{eqnarray*} in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^n$, where $p > 1$ and $ α\in \mathbb{R}$. Unlike the standard case $α= 0$, this equation is not scaling invariant. We construct for this equation a solution which blows up in finite time $T$ only at one blowup point $a$, according to the following asymptotic dynamics: \begin{eqnarray*} u(x,t) \sim ψ(t) \left(1 + \frac{(p-1)|x-a|^2}{4p(T -t)|\ln(T -t)|} \right)^{-\frac{1}{p-1}} \text{ as } t \to T, \end{eqnarray*} where $ψ(t)$ is the unique p…
We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with $L^2$-critical exponent and an inhomogeneous damping term. By using the tools developed by Merle and Raphael, we prove the existence of blowup phenomena in the energy space $H^1(\mathbb{R})$.
Semilinear elliptic equations which give rise to solutions blowing up at the boundary are perturbed by a Hardy potential. The size of this potential effects the existence of a certain type of solutions (large solutions): if the potential is too small, then no large solution exists. The presence of the Hardy potential requires a new definition of large solutions, following the pattern of the associated linear problem. Nonexistence and existence results for different types of solutions will be given. Our considerations are based on a Phragmen-Lindelof type theorem which enables us to classify th…
This paper is concerned with the blowup phenomena for initial-boundary value problem for certain semi linear parabolic, dispersive and hyperbolic equations in cone-like domain. The result proposes a unified treatment of estimates for lifespan of solutions to the problem by test function method. The Fujita exponent p=1 + 2/N appears as a threshold of blowup phenomena for small data when $C_{Σ}=R^N$ , but the case of cone-like domain with boundary the threshold changes and explicitly given via the first eigenvalue of corresponding Laplace-Beltrami operator with Dirichlet boundary condition as in…
This paper is concerned with the blowup phenomena for initial value problem of semilinear wave equation with critical time-dependent damping term (DW). The result is the sharp upper bound of lifespan of solution with respect to the small parameter $\ep$ when $p_F(N)\leq p\leq p_0(N+μ)$, where $p_F(N)$ denotes the Fujita exponent for the nonlinear heat equations and $p_0(n)$ denotes the Strauss exponent for nonlinear wave equation in $n$-dimension with $μ=0$. Consequently, by connecting the result of D'Abbicco--Lucente--Reissig 2015, our result clarifies the threshold exponent $p_0(N+μ)$ for di…
We concern the blow up problem to the scale invariant damping wave equations with sub-Strauss exponent. This problem has been studied by Lai, Takamura and Wakasa (\cite{Lai17}) and Ikeda and Sobajima \cite{Ikedapre} recently. In present paper, we extend the blowup exponent from $p_F(n)\leq p<p_S(n+2μ)$ to $1<p<p_S(n+μ)$ without small restriction on $μ$. Moreover, the upper bound of lifespan is derived with uniform estimate $T(\varepsilon)\leq C\varepsilon^{-2p(p-1)/γ(p,n+2μ)}$. This result extends the blowup result of semilinear wave equation and shows the wave-like behavior of scale invariant…
Global existence for small data Cauchy problem of semilinear wave equations with scaling invariant damping in 3-D is established in this work, assuming that the data are radial and the constant in front of the damping belongs to $[1.5, 2)$. The proof is based on a weighted $L^2-L^2$ estimate for inhomogeneous wave equation, which is established by interpolating between energy estimate and Morawetz type estimate.
We consider the following parabolic system whose nonlinearity has no gradient structure: $$\left\{\begin{array}{ll} \partial_t u = Δu + |v|^{p-1}v, \quad & \partial_t v = μΔv + |u|^{q - 1}u,\\ u(\cdot, 0) = u_0, \quad & v(\cdot, 0) = v_0, \end{array}\right. $$ in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^N$, where $p, q > 1$ and $μ> 0$. We show the existence of initial data such that the corresponding solution to this system blows up in finite time $T(u_0, v_0)$ simultaneously in $u$ and $v$ only at one blowup point $a$, according to the following asymptotic dynamics: $$\left\{\begin{array}{c} u(x,t)\sim Γ\…
We investigate the asymptotic behavior, as t goes to infinity, for a semilinear hyperbolic equation with asymptotically smal dissipation and convex potential. We prove that if the damping term behaves like K/t^αfor t large enough, k>0 and 0</alpha<1 then every global solution converges weakly to an equilibrium point. This result is a positive answer to a question left open in the paper [A. Cabot and P. Frankel, Asymptotics for some semilinear hyperbolic equation with non-autonomous damping. J. Differential Equations 252 (2012) 294-322.]
We study the blowup behavior for the focusing energy-supercritical semilinear wave equation in 3 space dimensions without symmetry assumptions on the data. We prove the stability of the ODE blowup profile.
We consider a nonlocal parabolic PDE, which may be regarded as the standard semilinear heat equation with power nonlinearity, where the nonlinear term is divided by some Sobolev norm of the solution. In this paper, we are interested in constructing blowup solutions under some critical regimes. We had a complete new phenomenon of the blowup speed with a log correction term.
In this paper we study a class of semilinear wave type equations with viscoelastic damping and delay feedback with time variable coefficient. By combining semigroup arguments, careful energy estimates and an iterative approach we are able to prove, under suitable assumptions, a well-posedness result and an exponential decay estimate for solutions corresponding to small initial data. This extends and concludes the analysis initiated in [16] and then developed in [13, 17].
In this paper we study the global existence of small data solutions to the Cauchy problem for the semilinear wave equation with scale-invariant damping. We obtain estimates for the solution and its energy with the same decay rate of the linear problem. We extend our results to a model with polynomial speed of propagation and to a model with an exponential speed of propagation.
We consider the Cauchy problem for semilinear wave equations with variable coefficients and time-dependent scattering damping in $\mathbf{R}^n$, where $n\geq 2$. It is expected that the critical exponent will be Strauss' number $p_0(n)$, which is also the one for semilinear wave equations without damping terms. Lai and Takamura (2018) have obtained the blow-up part, together with the upper bound of lifespan, in the sub-critical case $p<p_0(n)$. In this paper, we extend their results to the critical case $p=p_0(n)$. The proof is based on Wakasa and Yordanov (2018), which concerns the blow-up an…
In this paper we show existence of finite energy solutions for the Cauchy problem associated with a semilinear wave equation with interior damping and supercritical source terms. The main contribution consists in dealing with super-supercritical source terms (terms of the order of $|u|^p$ with $p\geq 5$ in $n=3$ dimensions), an open and highly recognized problem in the literature on nonlinear wave equations.
For a class of semi-linear elliptic equations with critical Sobolev exponents and boundary conditions, we prove point-wise estimates for blowup solutions and energy estimates. A special case of this class of equations is a locally defined prescribing scalar curvature and mean curvature type equation.
We study the blowup behavior of a class of strongly perturbed wave equations with a focusing supercritical power nonlinearity in three spatial dimensions. We show that the ODE blowup profile of the unperturbed equation still describes the asymptotics of stable blowup. As a consequence, stable ODE-type blowup is seen to be a universal phenomenon that exists in a large class of semilinear wave equations.
The blow-up for semilinear wave equations with the scale invariant damping has been well-studied for sub-Fujita exponent. However, for super-Fujita exponent, there is only one blow-up result which is obtained in 2014 by Wakasugi in the case of non-effective damping. In this paper we extend his result in two aspects by showing that: (I) the blow-up will happen for bigger exponent, which is closely related to the Strauss exponent, the critical number for non-damped semilinear wave equations; (II) such a blow-up result is established for a wider range of the constant than the known non-effective …
The blow up problem of the semilinear scale-invariant damping wave equation with critical Strauss type exponent is investigated. The life span is shown to be: $T(\varepsilon)\leq C\exp(\varepsilon^{-2p(p-1)})$ when $p=p_S(n+μ)$ for $0<μ<\frac{n^2+n+2}{n+2}$. This result completes our previous study \cite{Tu-Lin} on the sub-Strauss type exponent $p<p_S(n+μ)$. Our novelty is to construct the suitable test function from the modified Bessel function. This approach might be also applied to the other type damping wave equations.
The paper investigates a class of a semilinear wave equation with time-dependent damping term ($-\frac{1}{{(1+t)}^β}Δu_t$) and a nonlinearity $|u|^p$. We will show the influence of the the parameter $β$ in the blow-up results under some hypothesis on the initial data and the exponent $p$ by using the test function method. We also study the local existence in time of mild solution in the energy space $H^1(\mathbb{R}^n)\times L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$.
In this paper, we give a small data blow-up result for the one-dimensional semilinear wave equation with damping depending on time and space variables. We show that if the damping term can be regarded as perturbation, that is, non-effective damping in a certain sense, then the solution blows up in finite time for any power of nonlinearity. This gives an affirmative answer for the conjecture that the critical exponent agrees with that of the wave equation when the damping is non-effective in one space dimension.
In this work, we investigate the influence of general damping and potential terms on the blow-up and lifespan estimates for energy solutions to power-type semilinear wave equations. The space-dependent damping and potential functions are assumed to be critical or short range, spherically symmetric perturbation. The blow up results and the upper bound of lifespan estimates are obtained by the so-called test function method. The key ingredient is to construct special positive solutions to the linear dual problem with the desired asymptotic behavior, which is reduced, in turn, to constructing sol…
In this paper we consider the critical exponent problem for the semilinear wave equation with space-time dependent damping. When the damping is effective, it is expected that the critical exponent agrees with that of only space dependent coefficient case. We shall prove that there exists a unique global solution for small data if the power of nonlinearity is larger than the expected exponent. Moreover, we do not assume that the data are compactly supported. However, it is still open whether there exists a blow-up solution if the power of nonlinearity is smaller than the expected exponent.
In this paper, we investigate blow-up of solutions to semilinear wave equations with scale-invariant damping and nonlinear memory term in $\mathbb{R}^n$, which can be represented by the Riemann-Liouville fractional integral of order $1-γ$ with $γ\in(0,1)$. Our main interest is to study mixed influence from damping term and the memory kernel on blow-up conditions for the power of nonlinearity, by using test function method or generalized Kato's type lemma. We find a new competition, particularly for the small value of $γ$, on the blow-up range between the effective case and the non-effective ca…
This paper is concerned with long-time dynamics of semilinear wave equations defined on bounded domains of $\mathbb{R}^3$ with cubic nonlinear terms and locally distributed damping. The existence of regular finite-dimensional global attractors established by Chueshov, Lasiecka and Toundykov (2008) reflects a good deal of the current state of the art on this matter. Our contribution is threefold. First, we prove uniform boundedness of attractors with respect to a forcing parameter. Then, we study the continuity of attractors with respect to the parameter in a residual dense set. Finally, we sho…
We study global existence of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the wave equation with time-dependent damping and a power nonlinearity in the overdamping case. We prove the global well-posedness for small data in the energy space for the whole energy-subcritical case. This result implies that small data blow-up does not occur in the overdamping case, different from the other cases, i.e. effective or non-effective damping.
In this paper, we study the initial value problem for semilinear wave equations with the time-dependent and scale-invariant damping in two dimensions. Similarly to the one dimensional case by Kato, Takamura and Wakasa in 2019, we obtain the lifespan estimates of the solution for a special constant in the damping term, which are classified by total integral of the sum of the initial position and speed. The key fact is that, only in two space dimensions, such a special constant in the damping term is a threshold between "wave-like" domain and "heat-like" domain. As a result, we obtain a new type…
This paper is concerned with the initial value problem for semilinear wave equation with structural damping $u_{tt}+(-Δ)^σu_t -Δu =f(u)$, where $σ\in (0,\frac{1}{2})$ and $f(u) \sim |u|^p$ or $u |u|^{p-1}$ with $p> 1 + {2}/(n - 2 σ)$. We first show the global existence for initial data small in some weighted Sobolev spaces on $\mathcal R^n$ ($n \ge 2$). Next, we show that the asymptotic profile of the solution above is given by a constant multiple of the fundamental solution of the corresponding parabolic equation, provided the initial data belong to weighted $L^1$ spaces.
In the present article a semilinear wave equation with scale-invariant damping and mass is considered. The global (in time) existence of radial symmetric solutions in even spatial dimension $n$ is proved using weighted $L^\infty-L^\infty$ estimates, under the assumption that the multiplicative constants, which appear in the coefficients of damping and of mass terms, fulfill an interplay condition which yields somehow a "wave-like" model. In particular, combining this existence result with a recently proved blow-up result, a suitable shift of Strauss exponent is proved to be the critical expone…
In this paper we establish blow-up results and lifespan estimates for semilinear wave equations with scattering damping and negative mass term for subcritical power, which is the same as that of the corresponding problem without mass term, and also the same as that of the corresponding problem without both damping and mass term. For this purpose, we have to use the comparison argument twice, due to the damping and mass term, in additional to a key multiplier. Finally, we get the desired results by an iteration argument.
It is believed or conjectured that the semilinear wave equations with scattering space dependent damping admit the Strauss critical exponent, see Ikehata-Todorova-Yordanov \cite{ITY}(the bottom in page 2) and Nishihara-Sobajima-Wakasugi \cite{N2}(conjecture iii in page 4). In this work, we are devoted to showing the conjecture is true at least when the decay rate of the space dependent variable coefficients before the damping is larger than 2. Also, if the nonlinear term depends only on the derivative of the solution, we may prove the upper bound of the lifespan is the same as that of the solu…
In this paper, we are concerned with the global existence and blowup of smooth solutions of the 3-D compressible Euler equation with time-depending damping $$ \partial_tρ+\operatorname{div}(ρu)=0, \quad \partial_t(ρu)+\operatorname{div}\left(ρu\otimes u+p\,I_{3}\right)=-\,\fracμ{(1+t)^λ}\,ρu, \quad ρ(0,x)=\bar ρ+\varepsilonρ_0(x),\quad u(0,x)=\varepsilon u_0(x), $$ where $x\in\mathbb R^3$, $μ>0$, $λ\geq 0$, and $\barρ>0$ are constants, $ρ_0,\, u_0\in C_0^{\infty}(\mathbb R^3)$, $(ρ_0, u_0)\not\equiv 0$, $ρ(0,\cdot)>0$, and $\varepsilon>0$ is sufficiently small. For $0\leqλ\leq1$, we show that …
The critical constant of time-decaying damping in the scale-invariant case is recently conjectured. It also has been expected that the lifespan estimate is the same as for the associated semilinear heat equations if the constant is in the \heat-like" domain. In this paper, we point out that this is not true if the total integral of the sum of initial position and speed vanishes. In such a case, we have a new type of the lifespan estimates which is closely related to the non-damped case in shifted space dimensions.
In the present paper, we are concerned with the semilinear viscoelastic wave equation subject to a locally distributed dissipative effect of Kelvin-Voigt type, posed on a bounded domain with smooth boundary. We begin with an auxiliary problem and we show that its solution decays exponentially in the weak phase space. The method of proof combines an observability inequality and unique continuation properties. Then, passing to the limit, we recover the original model and prove its global existence as well as the exponential stability.
In this paper, we study the finite-time blow up of solutions to the following semilinear wave equation with time-dependent damping \[ \partial_t^2u-Δu+\fracμ{1+t}\partial_tu=|u|^p \] in $\mathbb{R}_{+}\times\mathbb{R}^n$. More precisely, for $0\leqμ\leq 2,μ\neq1$ and $n\geq 2$, there is no global solution for $1<p<p_S(n+μ)$, where $p_S(k)$ is the $k$-dimensional Strauss exponent and a life-span of the blow up solution will be obtained. Our work is an extension of \cite{IS}, where the authors proved a similar blow up result with a larger range of $μ$. However, we obtain a better life-span estim…
In the present paper, we prove time decay estimates of solutions in weighted Sobolev spaces to the second order evolution equation with fractional Laplacian and damping for data in Besov spaces. Our estimates generalize the estimates obtained in the previous studies. The second aim of this article is to apply these estimates to prove small data global well-posedness for the Cauchy problem of the equation with power nonlinearities. Especially, the estimates obtained in this paper enable us to treat more general conditions on the nonlinearities and the spatial dimension than the results in the p…
The global existence for semilinear wave equations with space-dependent critical damping $\partial_t^2u-Δu+\frac{V_0}{|x|}\partial_t u=f(u)$ in an exterior domain is dealt with, where $f(u)=|u|^{p-1}u$ and $f(u)=|u|^p$ are in mind. Existence and non-existence of global-in-time solutions are discussed. To obtain global existence, a weighted energy estimate for the linear problem is crucial. The proof of such a weighted energy estimate contains an alternative proof of energy estimates established by Ikehata--Todorova--Yordanov [J.\ Math.\ Soc.\ Japan (2013), 183--236] but this clarifies the prec…
In this paper we study blow-up and lifespan estimate for solutions to the Cauchy problem with small data for semilinear wave equations with scattering damping and negative mass term. We show that the negative mass term will play a dominant role when the decay of its coefficients is not so fast, thus the solutions will blow up in a finite time. What is more, we establish a lifespan estimate from above which is much shorter than the usual one.
