Under the validity of the positive mass theorem, the Yamabe flow on a smooth compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $N \ge 3$ is known to exist for all time $t$ and converges to a solution to the Yamabe problem as $t \to \infty$. We prove that if a suitable perturbation, which may be smooth and arbitrarily small, is imposed on the Yamabe flow on any given Riemannian manifold $M$ of dimension $N \ge 5$, the resulting flow may blow up at multiple points on $M$ in the infinite time. Our proof is constructive, and indeed we construct such a flow by using solutions of the Yamabe problem on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^N$ as blow-up profiles. We also examine the stability of the blow-up phenomena under a negativity condition on the Ricci curvature at blow-up points.
We build blowing-up solutions for a supercritical perturbation of the Yamabe problem on manifolds with umbilic boundary provided the dimension of the manifold is n>7 and that the Weyl tensor W(x) is not vanishing on the boundary of M.
We build blowing-up solutions for a supercritical perturbation of the Yamabe problem on manifolds with boundary, provided the dimension of the manifold is n>6 and the trace-free part of the second fundamental form is non-zero everywhere on the boundary.
We build blowing-up solutions for linear perturbation of the Yamabe problem on manifolds with umbilic boundary, provided the Weyl tensor is nonzero everywhere on the boundary and the dimension of the manifold is n>10.
We build blowing-up solutions for linear perturbation of the Yamabe problem on manifolds with boundary, provided the dimension of the manifold is n>6 and the trace-free part of the second fundamental form is non-zero everywhere on the boundary.
We study the stability of compactness of solutions for the Yamabe boundary problem on a compact Riemannian manifold with non umbilic boundary. We prove that the set of solutions of Yamabe boundary problem is a compact set when perturbing the mean curvature of the boundary from below and the scalar curvature with a function whose maximum is not too positive. In addition, we prove the counterpart of the stability result: there exists a blowing up sequence of solutions when we perturb the mean curvature from above or the mean curvature from below and the scalar curvature with a function with a la…
We prove sharp pointwise blow-up estimates for finite-energy sign-changing solutions of critical equations of Schrödinger-Yamabe type on a closed Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ of dimension $n \ge 3$. This is a generalisation of the so-called $C^0$-theory for positive solutions of Schrödinger-Yamabe type equations. To deal with the sign-changing case we develop a method of proof that combines an \emph{a priori} bubble-tree analysis with a finite-dimensional reduction, and reduces the proof to obtaining sharp \emph{a priori} blow-up estimates for a linear problem.
We investigate the blow-up behavior of sequences of sign-changing solutions for the Yamabe equation on a Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ of positive Yamabe type. For each dimension $n\ge11$, we describe the value of the minimal energy threshold at which blow-up occurs. In dimensions $11 \le n \le 24$, where the set of positive solutions is known to be compact, we show that the set of sign-changing solutions is not compact and that blow-up already occurs at the lowest possible energy level. We prove this result by constructing a smooth, non-locally conformally flat metric on space forms $\mathbb{S}…
We consider the semi-Riemannian Yamabe type equations of the form \[ -\square u + λu = μ\vert u\vert^{p-1}u\quad\text{ on }M \] where $M$ is either the semi-Euclidean space or the pseudosphere of dimension $m\geq 3$, $\square$ is the semi-Riemannian Laplacian in $M$, $λ\geq0$, $μ\in\mathbb{R}\smallsetminus\{0\}$ and $p>1$. Using semi-Riemannian isoparametric functions on $M$, we reduce the PDE into a generalized Emden-Fowler ODE of the form \[ w''+q(r)w'+λw = μ\vert w\vert^{p-1}w\quad\text{ on } I, \] where $I\subset\mathbb{R}$ is $[0,\infty)$ or $[0,π]$, $q(r)$ blows-up at $0$ and $w$ is subj…
Let $(M,g)$ be a closed locally conformally flat Riemannian manifold of dimension $n \ge 7$ and of positive Yamabe type. If $ξ_0$ denotes a non-degenerate critical point of the mass function we prove the existence, for any $ k \ge 1$ and $\varepsilon >0$, of a positive blowing-up solution $u_{\varepsilon}$ of $$\triangle_g u_{\varepsilon} +\big( c_n S_g +\varepsilon h\big) u_{\varepsilon} = u_{\varepsilon}^{2^*-1},$$ that blows up like the superposition of $k$ positive bubbles concentrating at different speeds at $ξ_0$. The method of proof combines a finite-dimensional reduction with the sharp…
We show the noninheritance of the completeness of the noncompact Yamabe flow. Our main theorem states the existence of a long time solution which is complete for each time and converges to an incomplete Riemannian metric. This shows the occurrence of the infinite-time incompleteness.
The goal of this paper is to study Yamabe flow on a complete Riemannian manifold of bounded geometry with possibly infinite volume. In the case of infinite volume, standard volume normalization of the Yamabe flow fails and the flow may not converge. Instead, we consider a curvature normalized Yamabe flow, and assuming negative scalar curvature, prove its long-time existence and convergence. This extends the results of Suárez-Serrato and Tapie to a non-compact setting. In the appendix, we specify our analysis of a particular example of manifolds with bounded geometry, namely manifolds with fibe…
We consider a closed cohomogeneity one Riemannian manifold $(M^n,g) $ of dimension $n\geq 3$. If the Ricci curvature of $M$ is positive, we prove the existence of infinite nodal solutions for equations of the form $-Δ_g u + λu = λu^q$ with $λ>0$, $q>1$. In particular for a positive Einstein manifold which is of cohomogeneity one or fibers over a cohomogeniety one Einstein manifold we prove the existence of infinite nodal solutions for the Yamabe equation, with a prescribed number of connected components of its nodal domain.
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a connected infinite and locally finite weighted graph, $Δ_p$ be the $p$-th discrete graph Laplacian. In this paper, we consider the $p$-th Yamabe type equation $$-Δ_pu+h|u|^{p-2}u=gu^{α-1}$$ on $G$, where $h$ and $g$ are known, $2<α\leq p$. The prototype of this equation comes from the smooth Yamabe equation on an open manifold. We prove that the above equation has at least one positive solution on $G$.
We construct solutions for the fractional Yamabe problem that are singular at a prescribed number of isolated points. This seems to be the first time that a gluing method is successfully applied to a non-local problem. The main step is an infinite-dimensional Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction method, that reduces the problem to an (infinite dimensional) Toda type system.
Let $Ω$ be a smooth bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and denote the regular part of the Green's function on $Ω$ with Dirichlet boundary condition as $H(x,y)$. Assume that $q \in Ω$ and $n\geq 5$. We prove that there exists an integer $k_0$ such that for any integer $k\geq k_0$ there exist initial data $u_0$ and smooth parameter functions $ξ(t)\to q$, $0<μ(t)\to 0$ as $t\to +\infty$ such that the solution $u_q$ of the critical nonlinear heat equation \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} u_t = Δu + |u|^{\frac{4}{n-2}}u\text{ in } Ω\times (0, \infty),\\ u = 0\text{ on } \partial Ω\times (0, \infty),\\…
We prove the existence of regular optimal $G$-invariant partitions, with an arbitrary number $\ell\geq 2$ of components, for the Yamabe equation on a closed Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ when $G$ is a compact group of isometries of $M$ with infinite orbits. To this aim, we study a weakly coupled competitive elliptic system of $\ell$ equations, related to the Yamabe equation. We show that this system has a least energy $G$-invariant solution with nontrivial components and we show that the limit profiles of the its components separate spatially as the competition parameter goes to $-\infty$, givin…

We study compactness for nonnegative solutions of the fourth order constant $Q$-curvature equations on smooth compact Riemannian manifolds of dimension $\ge 5$. If the $Q$-curvature equals $-1$, we prove that all solutions are universally bounded. If the $Q$-curvature is $1$, assuming that Paneitz operator's kernel is trivial and its Green function is positive, we establish universal energy bounds on manifolds which are either locally conformally flat (LCF) or of dimension $\le 9$. Moreover, assuming in addition that a positive mass type theorem holds for the Paneitz operator, we prove compact…
We study the chemotaxis model $\partial$ t u = div($\nabla$u -- u$\nabla$w) + $θ$v -- u in (0, $\infty$) x $Ω$, $\partial$ t v = u -- $θ$v in (0, $\infty$) x $Ω$, $\partial$ t w = D$Δ$w -- $α$w + v in (0, $\infty$) x $Ω$, with no-flux boundary conditions in a bounded and smooth domain $Ω$ $\subset$ R 2 , where u and v represent the densities of subpopulations of moving and static individuals of some species, respectively, and w the concentration of a chemoattractant. We prove that, in an appropriate functional setting, all solutions exist globally in time. Moreover, we establish the existence …
In this paper, we initiate the study of wave propagation in a recently proposed mathematical model for stretch-limited elastic strings. We consider the longitudinal motion of a simple class of uniform, semi-infinite, stretch-limited strings under no external force with finite end held fixed and prescribed tension at the infinite end. We study a class of motions such that the string has one inextensible segment, where the local stretch is maximized, and one extensible segment. The equations of motion reduce to a simple and novel shock front problem in one spatial variable for which we prove exi…
After giving a general introduction to the main known results on the anisotropic Calder{ó}n problem on n-dimensional compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary, we give a motivated review of some recent non-uniqueness results obtained in [5, 6] for the anisotropic Calder{ó}n problem at fixed frequency, in dimension n $\ge$ 3, when the Dirichlet and Neumann data are measured on disjoint subsets of the boundary. These non-uniqueness results are of the following nature: given a smooth compact connected Riemannian manifold with boundary (M, g) of dimension n $\ge$ 3, we first show that there exist…
