This paper concerns a controllability problem for blowup points on heat equation. It can be described as follows: In the absence of control, the solution to the linear heat system globally exists in a bounded domain $Ω$. While, for a given time $T>0$ and a point $a$ in this domain, we find a feedback control, which is acted on an internal subset $ω$ of this domain, such that the corresponding solution to this system blows up at time $T$ and holds unique point $a$. We show that $a\in ω$ can be the unique blowup point of the corresponding solution with a certain feedback control, and for any feedback control, $a\in Ω\setminus \overlineω$ could not be the unique blowup point.
In this paper, we recover the boundary null controllability for the degenerate heat equation by analyzing the asymptotic behavior of an eligible family of state-control pairs $((u_{\varepsilon}, h_{\varepsilon}))_{\varepsilon >0}$ solving corresponding singularly perturbed internal null controllability problems. As in other situations studied in the literature, our approach relies on Carleman estimates and meticulous weak convergence results. However, for the degenerate parabolic case, some specific trace operator inequalities must be obtained, in order to justify correctly the passage to the …
In this paper we focus on the null controllability problem for the heat equation with the so-called inverse square potential and a memory term. To this aim, we first establish the null controllability for a nonhomogeneous singular heat equation by a new Carleman inequality with weights which do not blow up at t=0. Then the null controllability property is proved for the singular heat equation with memory under a condition on the kernel, by means of Kakutani's fixed-point Theorem.
In this note, we give an elementary proof of the lack of null controllability for the heat equation on the half line by employing the machinery inherited by the unified transform, known also as the Fokas method. This approach also extends in a uniform way to higher dimensions and different initial-boundary value problems governed by the heat equation, suggesting a novel methodology for studying problems related to controllability.
The main purpose of this article is to prove a logarithmic convexity estimate for the solution of a linear heat equation subject to dynamic boundary conditions in a bounded convex domain. As an application, we prove the impulsive null approximate controllability for an impulsive heat equation with dynamic boundary conditions.
This paper deals with the hierarchical control of the anisotropic heat equation with dynamic boundary conditions and drift terms. We use the Stackelberg-Nash strategy with one leader and two followers. To each fixed leader, we find a Nash equilibrium corresponding to a bi-objective optimal control problem for the followers. Then, by some new Carleman estimates, we prove a null controllability result.
We consider the semilinear heat equation posed on a smooth bounded domain $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^{N}$ with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. The control input is a source term localized in some arbitrary nonempty open subset $ω$ of $Ω$. The goal of this paper is to prove the uniform large time global null-controllability for semilinearities $f(s) = \pm |s| \log^α(2+|s|)$ where $α\in [3/2,2)$ which is the case left open by Enrique Fernandez-Cara and Enrique Zuazua in 2000. It is worth mentioning that the free solution (without control) can blow-up. First, we establish the small-time global …
We make two remarks about the null-controllability of the heat equation with Dirichlet condition in unbounded domains. Firstly, we give a geometric necessary condition (for interior null-controllability in the Euclidean setting)which implies that one can not go infinitely far away from the control region without tending to the boundary (if any), but also applies when the distance to the control region is bounded. The proof builds on heat kernel estimates. Secondly, we describe a class of null-controllable heat equations on unbounded product domains. Elementary examples include an infinite stri…
We derive in a straightforward way the null controllability of a 1-D heat equation with boundary control. We use the so-called {\em flatness approach}, which consists in parameterizing the solution and the control by the derivatives of a "flat output". This provides an explicit control law achieving the exact steering to zero. We also give accurate error estimates when the various series involved are replaced by their partial sums, which is paramount for an actual numerical scheme. Numerical experiments demonstrate the relevance of the approach.
In this paper, we are concerned with the boundary controllability of heat equation with dynamic boundary conditions. More precisely, we prove that the equation is null controllable at any positive time by means of a boundary control supported on an arbitrary subboundary. The proof of the main result combines a new boundary Carleman estimate and some regularity estimates for the adjoint system, with an explicit dependence with respect to the final time. This technique allows us to overcome a new difficulty that arises when absorbing a normal derivative term.
In this paper, we prove a logarithmic convexity that reflects an observability estimate at a single point of time for 1-D heat equation with dynamic boundary conditions. Consequently, we establish the impulse approximate controllability for the impulsive heat equation with dynamic boundary conditions. Moreover, we obtain an explicit upper bound of the cost of impulse control. At the end, we give a constructive algorithm for computing the impulsive control of minimal $L^2$-norm. We also present some numerical tests to validate the theoretical results and show the efficiency of the designed algo…
We derive in a direct and rather straightforward way the null controllability of the N-dimensional heat equation in a bounded cylinder with boundary control at one end of the cylinder. We use the so-called flatness approach, which consists in parameterizing the solution and the control by the derivatives of a "flat output". This yields an explicit control law achieving the exact steering to zero. Replacing the involved series by partial sums we obtain a simple numerical scheme for which we give explicit error bounds. Numerical experiments demonstrate the relevance of the approach.
We consider the null-controllability of a non-local heat equation by interior $L^2(Ω)$ controls. We confirm a conjecture of Lissy and Zuazua by showing that it is enough to assume that the kernel $k(x,ξ)$ is symmetric and $k(x,ξ)\in L^2(Ω\timesΩ)$ in order to obtain the result. The result is obtained by treating the non-local linear operator $K:L^2(Ω)\rightarrow L^2(Ω)$ as a compact and bounded perturbation of the Dirichlet-Laplacian, $A$, which leads to useful bounds on the semigroup generated by $(A+K,\mathcal{D}(A))$. Using this approach, we are also able to estimate the cost of control.
In the paper, the problems of controllability and approximate controllability are studied for the control system $w_t=\frac{1}ρ\left(kw_x\right)_x+γw$, $\left.\left(\sqrt{\frac{k}ρ}w_x\right)\right|_{x=0}=u$, $x>0$, $t\in(0,T)$, where $u$ is a control, $u\in L^\infty(0,T)$. It is proved that each initial state of the control system is approximately controllable to any target state in a given time $T>0$. To obtain this result, the transformation operator generated by the equation data $ρ$, $k$, $γ$ is applied. The results are illustrated by examples.
In many practical applications of control theory some constraints on the state and/or on the control need to be imposed. In this paper, we prove controllability results for semilinear parabolic equations under positivity constraints on the control, when the time horizon is long enough. As we shall see, in fact, the minimal controllability time turns out to be strictly positive. More precisely, we prove a global steady state constrained controllability result for a semilinear parabolic equation with $C^1$ nonlinearity, without sign or globally Lipschitz assumptions on the nonlinear term. Then, …
In the paper, problems of controllability, approximate controllability, reachability and approximate reachability are studied for the control system $w_t=w_{xx}$, $w(0,\cdot)=u$, $x>0$, $t\in(0,T)$, where $u\in L^\infty(0,T)$ is a control. It is proved that each end state of this system is approximately reachable in a given time $T$, and each its initial state is approximately controllable in a given time $T$. A necessary and sufficient condition for reachability in a given time $T$ is obtained in terms of solvability a Markov power moment problem. It is also shown that there is no initial sta…
In this article we study a controllability problem for a parabolic and a hyperbolic partial differential equations in which the control is the shape of the domain where the equation holds. The quantity to be controlled is the trace of the solution into an open subdomain and at a given time, when the right hand side source term is known. The mapping that associates this trace to the shape of the domain is nonlinear. We show (i) an approximate controllability property for the linearized parabolic problem and (ii) an exact local controllability property for the linearized and the nonlinear equati…
Partial differential equation on networks have been widely investigated in the last decades in view of their application to quantum mechanics (Schrödinger type equations) or to the analysis of flexible structures (wave type equations). Nevertheless, very few results are available for diffusive models despite an increasing demand arising from life sciences such as neurobiology. This paper analyzes the controllability properties of the heat equation on a compact network under the action of a single input bilinear control. By adapting a recent method due to [F.~Alabau-Boussouira, P.~Cannarsa and …
We survey recent results on the control problem for the heat equation on unbounded and large bounded domains. First we formulate new uncertainty relations, respectively spectral inequalities. Then we present an abstract control cost estimate which improves upon earlier results. It is particularly interesting when combined with the earlier mentioned spectral inequalities since it yields sharp control cost bounds in several asymptotic regimes. We also show that control problems on unbounded domains can be approximated by corresponding problems on a sequence of bounded domains forming an exhausti…
This paper deals with the approximate controllability for the semilinear heat equation in one space dimension. Our aim is to provide an estimate of the cost of the control.
We prove that the thickness property is a necessary and sufficient geometric condition that ensures the (rapid) stabilization or the approximate null-controllability with uniform cost of a large class of evolution equations posed on the whole space $\mathbb R^n$. These equations are associated with operators of the form $F(\vert D_x\vert)$, the function $F:[0,+\infty)\rightarrow\mathbb R$ being continuous and bounded from below. We also provide explicit feedbacks and constants associated with these stabilization properties. The notion of thickness is known to be a necessary and sufficient cond…
We prove null controllability for linear and semilinear heat equations with dynamic boundary conditions of surface diffusion type. The results are based on a new Carleman estimate for this type of boundary conditions.
This paper studies the approximate and null controllability for impulse controlled systems of heat equations coupled by a pair (A,B) of constant matrices. We present a necessary and sufficient condition for the approximate controllability, which is exactly Kalman's controllability rank condition of (A,B). We prove that when such a system is approximately controllable, the approximate controllability over an interval [0,T] can be realized by adding controls at arbitrary n different control instants 0<τ_1<τ_2<\cdots<τ_n<T, provided that τ_n-τ_1<d_A, where d_A=\min\{π/|Im λ| : λ\in σ(A)\}. We als…
In this paper, we analyze the null controllability property for a degenerate parabolic equation involving memory terms with a locally distributed control. We first derive a null controllability result for a nonhomogeneous degenerate heat equation via new Carleman estimates with weighted time functions that do not blow up at t= 0. Then this result is successfully used with a classical fixed point to obtain null controllability for the initial memory system.
This paper deals with the problem of internal null-controllability of a heat equation posed on a bounded domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions and perturbed by a semilinear nonlocal term. We prove the small-time local null-controllability of the equation. The proof relies on two main arguments. First, we establish the small-time local null-controllability of a $2 \times 2$ reaction-diffusion system, where the second equation is governed by the parabolic operator $τ\partial_t - σΔ$, $τ, σ> 0$. More precisely, this controllability result is obtained uniformly with respect to the parameters $…
We derive in a direct and rather straightforward way the null controllability of a 2-D heat equation with boundary control. We use the so-called flatness approach, which consists in parameterizing the solution and the control by the derivatives of a "flat output". In this paper, we present some controllability results for the heat equation in the framework of hierarchic control. We present a Stackelberg strategy combining the concept of controllability with robustness: the main control (the leader) is in charge of a null-controllability objective while a secondary control (the follower) solves a robust control problem, this is, we look for an optimal control in the presence of the worst disturbance. We improve previous results by considering that either the leader or follower control acts on a small part of the boundary. We also present a discussion abo…
We prove that the approximate null-controllability with uniform cost of the hypoelliptic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck equations posed on $\mathbb R^n$ is characterized by an integral thickness geometric condition on the control supports. We also provide associated quantitative weak observability estimates. This result for the hypoelliptic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck equations is deduced from the same study for a large class of non-autonomous elliptic equations from moving control supports. We generalize in particular results known for parabolic equations posed on $\mathbb R^n$, for which the approximate null-con…
The null controllability of the heat equation is known for decades [19,23,30]. The finite time stabilizability of the one dimensional heat equation was proved by Coron--Nguyên [13], while the same question for high dimensional spaces remained widely open. Inspired by Coron--Trélat [14] we find explicit stationary feedback laws that quantitatively exponentially stabilize the heat equation with decay rate $λ$ and $Ce^{C\sqrtλ}$ estimates, where Lebeau--Robbiano's spectral inequality [30] is naturally used. Then a piecewise controlling argument leads to null controllability with optimal cost $Ce^…
This paper is dedicated to approximate controllability for Grushin equation on the rectangle $(x,y) \in (-1,1) \times (0,1)$ with an inverse square potential. This model corresponds to the heat equation for the Laplace-Beltrami operator associated to the Grushin metric on $\mathbb{R}^2$, studied by Boscain and Laurent. The operator is both degenerate and singular on the line $\{ x=0 \}$. The approximate controllability is studied through unique continuation of the adjoint system. For the range of singularity under study, approximate controllability is proved to hold whatever the degeneracy is.…
Given a control region $Ω$ on a compact Riemannian manifold $M$, we consider the heat equation with a source term $g$ localized in $Omega$. It is known that any initial data in $L^2(M)$ can be stirred to 0 in an arbitrarily small time $T$ by applying a suitable control $g$ in $L^2([0,T]xOmega)$, and, as $T$ tends to 0, the norm of $g$ grows like $e^(C/T)$ times the norm of the data. We investigate how $C$ depends on the geometry of $Omega$. We prove $C\geq d^{2}/4$ where $d$ is the largest distance of a point in $M$ from $Ω$. When $M$ is a segment of length $L$ controlled at one end, we prove …
We are interested by the controllability of a fluid-structure interaction system where the fluid is viscous and incompressible and where the structure is elastic and located on a part of the boundary of the fluid's domain. In this article, we simplify this system by considering a linearization and by replacing the wave/plate equation for the structure by a heat equation. We show that the corresponding system coupling the Stokes equations with a heat equation at its boundary is null-controllable. The proof is based on Carleman estimates and interpolation inequalities. One of the Carleman estima…
In this paper, we consider a linear hybrid system which is composed of $N+1$ non-homogeneous thin rods connected by $N$ interior-point masses with a Dirichlet boundary condition on the left end, and Dirichlet control on the right end. Using a detailed spectral analysis and the moment theory, we prove that this system is null controllable at any positive time $T$. To this end, firstly, we implement the Wronskian technique to obtain the characteristic equation for the eigenvalues $(λ_{n})_{n\in\N^*}$ associated with this system. Secondly, we provide that the eigenvalues $(λ_{n})_{n\in\N^*}$ inte…
In this paper, we first prove a uniform upper bound on costs of null controls for semilinear heat equations with globally Lipschitz nonlinearity on a sequence of increasing domains, where the controls are acted on an equidistributed set that spreads out in the whole Euclidean space R^N . As an application, we then show the exactly null controllability for this semilinear heat equation in R^N . The main novelty here is that the upper bound on costs of null controls for such kind of equations in large but bounded domains can be made uniformly with respect to the sizes of domains under considerat…
In this paper we establish hierarchic control for the linear heat equation in $\re^N$ with potentials. Our strategy is inspired by the techniques developed by J.I. Díaz and J.-L. Lions \cite{DL}; however many new difficulties arise due to lack of compactness of Sobolev embeddings. We manage these adversities by employing similarity variables and weighted Sobolev spaces.

We consider a linear hybrid system composed by two rods of equal length connected by a point mass. We show that the system is null controllable with Dirichlet and Neumann controls. The results are based on a careful spectral spectral analysis together with the moment method.
This paper is concerned with the constrained approximate null controllability of heat equation coupled by a real matrix $P$, where the controls are impulsive and periodically acted into the system through a series of real matrices $\{Q_k\}_{k=1}^\hbar$. The conclusions are given in two cases. In the case that the controls act globally into the system, we prove that the system is global constrained approximate null controllable under a spectral condition of $P$ together with a rank condition of $P$ and $\{Q_k\}_{k=1}^\hbar$; While in the case that the controls act locally into the system, we pr…
We consider a fully-discrete approximations of 1-D heat equation with dynamic boundary conditions for which we provide a controllability result. The proof of this result is based on a relaxed observability inequality for the corresponding adjoint system. This is done by using a suitable Carleman estimate for such models where the discrete parameters $h$ and $Δt$ are connected to the one of the large Carleman parameters.
In this paper, we consider a nonlinear system of two parabolic equations, with a distributed control in the first equation and an odd coupling term in the second one. We prove that the nonlinear system is small-time locally null-controllable. The main difficulty is that the linearized system is not null-controllable. To overcome this obstacle, we extend in a nonlinear setting the strategy introduced by the first author that consists in constructing odd controls for the linear heat equation. The proof relies on three main steps. First, we obtain from the classical L^2 parabolic Carleman estimat…
We study the controllability to trajectories, under positivity constraints on the control or the state, of a one-dimensional heat equation involving the fractional Laplace operator $ (-\partial_x^2)^s$ (with $0<s<1$) on the interval $(-1,1)$. Our control function is localized in an open set $\mathcal O$ in the exterior of $(-1,1)$, that is, $\mathcal O\subset (\mathbb{R} \setminus (-1,1))$. We show that there exists a minimal (strictly positive) time $T_{\rm min}$ such that the fractional heat dynamics can be controlled from any initial datum in $L^2(-1,1)$ to a positive trajectory through the…
The aim of this short paper is to explore a new connection between a conjecture concerning sharp boundary observability estimates for the 1-D heat equation in small time and a conjecture concerning the cost of null-controllability for a 1-D convection-diffusion equation with constant coefficients controlled on the boundary in the vanishing viscosity limit, in the spirit of what is done in [Pierre Lissy, A link between the cost of fast controls for the 1-D heat equation and the uniform controllability of a 1-D transport-diffusion equation, C. R. Math. Acad. Sci. Paris, Volume 352, 2012]. We not…
The semilinear heat equation with non-instantaneous impulses \textbf{(NII)}, memory, and delay is considered and its approximate controllability is obtained. This is done by employing a technique that avoids fixed point theorems and pulls back the control solution to a fixed curve in a short time interval. We demonstrate, once again, that the controllability of the system is robust under the influence of non-instantaneous impulses, memory, and delays. Finally, we present some open problems and a possible general framework to study the controllability of non-instantaneous impulses semilinear sy…
