Let M be a smooth manifold and V a Euclidean space. Let Ebar(M,V) be the homotopy fiber of the map from Emb(M,V) to Imm(M,V). This paper is about the rational homology of Ebar(M,V). We study it by applying embedding calculus and orthogonal calculus to the bi-functor (M,V) |--> HQ /\Ebar(M,V)_+. Our main theorem states that if the dimension of V is more than twice the embedding dimension of M, the Taylor tower in the sense of orthogonal calculus (henceforward called ``the orthogonal tower'') of this functor splits as a product of its layers. Equivalently, the rational homology spectral sequence associated with the tower collapses at E^1. In the case of knot embeddings, this spectral sequence coincides with the Vassiliev spectral sequence. The main ingredients in the proof are embedding calculus and Kontsevich's theorem on the formality of the little balls operad.
We write explicit formulas for the layers in the orthogonal tower of the functor HQ /\Ebar(M,V)_+. The formulas show, in particular, that the (rational) homotopy type of the layers of the orthogonal tower is determined by the (rational) homology type of M. This, together with our rational splitting theorem, implies that under the above assumption on codimension, the rational homology groups of Ebar(M,V) are determined by the rational homology type of M.
In this note, we prove that the Swiss-cheese operad is not formal. We also give a criteria in terms of Massey operadic product for the non-formality of a topological operad.
We show that the little discs operad $D_2$ is not formal over $\mathbb{F}_2$ as a planar (or non-symmetric) operad. We compute explicitly the homological obstruction using as chain model the cells of the spineless cacti operad
In his famous paper entitled "Operads and motives in deformation quantization", Maxim Kontsevich constructed (in order to prove the formality of the little d-disks operad) a topological operad, which is called in the literature the Kontsevich operad, and which is denoted Kd in this paper. This operad has a nice structure: it is a multiplicative symmetric operad, that is, it comes with a morphism from the symmetric associative operad. There are many results in the literature concerning the formality of Kd. It is well known (by Kontsevich) that Kd is formal over reals as a symmetric operad. It i…
We prove that the chain operad of the framed little balls (or disks) operad is not formal as a non-symmetric operad over the rationals if the dimension of their balls is odd and greater than 4.
Lambrechts, Turchin and Volić proved the Bousfield-Kan type rational homology spectral sequence associated to the $d$-th Kontsevich operad collapses at $E^2$-page if $d\geq 4$. The key of their proof is formality of the operad. In this paper, we simplify their proof using a model category of operads. As byproducts we obtain two new consequences. One is collapse of the spectral sequence in the case of $d=3$ (and the coefficients being rational numbers). The other says there is no non-trivial extension for the Gerstenhaber algebra structure on the spectral sequence.
We study bicolored configurations of points in the Euclidean $n$-space that are constrained to remain either inside or outside a fixed Euclidean $m$-subspace, with $n - m \ge 2$. We define a higher-codimensional variant of the Swiss-Cheese operad, called the complementarily constrained disks operad $\mathsf{CD}_{mn}$, associated to such configurations. The operad $\mathsf{CD}_{mn}$ is weakly equivalent to the operad of locally constant factorization algebras on the stratified space $\{\mathbb{R}^{m} \subset \mathbb{R}^{n}\}$. We prove that this operad is formal over $\mathbb{R}$.
We give a new proof of formality of the operad of little disks. The proof makes use of an operadic version of a simple formality criterion for commutative differential graded algebras due to Sullivan. We see that formality is a direct consequence of the fact that the Grothendieck-Teichmüller group operates on the chain operad of little disks.
We develop the details of Kontsevich's proof of the formality of little N-disks operad over the field of real numbers. Formality holds in the category of operads of chain complexes and also in some sense in the category of commutative differential graded algebras, which is the category encoding "real" homotopy theory. We also prove a relative version of the formality for the inclusion of the little m-disks operad in the little N-disks operad for N>=2m+1.
We establish that $E_n$-operads satisfy a rational intrinsic formality theorem for $n\geq 3$. We gain our results in the category of Hopf cooperads in cochain graded dg-modules which defines a model for the rational homotopy of operads in spaces. We consider, in this context, the dual cooperad of the $n$-Poisson operad $\mathsf{Pois}_n^c$, which represents the cohomology of the operad of little $n$-discs $\mathsf{D}_n$. We assume $n\geq 3$. We explicitly prove that a Hopf cooperad in cochain graded dg-modules $\mathsf{K}$ is weakly-equivalent (quasi-isomorphic) to $\mathsf{Pois}_n^c$ as a Hopf…
We study some formality criteria for differential graded algebras over differential graded operads. This unifies and generalizes other known approaches like the ones by Manetti and Kaledin. In particular, we construct general operadic Kaledin classes and show that they provide obstructions to formality. Moreover, we show that an algebra A is formal if and only if its operadic cohomology spectral sequence degenerates at $E_2$.
The framed little 2-discs operad is homotopy equivalent to the Kimura-Stasheff-Voronov cyclic operad of moduli spaces of genus zero stable curves with tangent rays at the marked points and nodes. We show that this cyclic operad is formal, meaning that its chains and its homology (the Batalin-Vilkovisky operad) are quasi-isomorphic cyclic operads. To prove this we introduce a new complex of graphs in which the differential is a combination of edge deletion and contraction, and we show that this complex resolves BV as a cyclic operad.
We study two colored operads of configurations of little $n$-disks in a unit $n$-disk, with the centers of the small disks of one color restricted to an $m$-plane, $m<n$. We compute the rational homotopy type of these \emph{extended Swiss Cheese operads} and show how they are connected to the rational homotopy types of the inclusion maps from the little $m$-disks to the little $n$-disks operad.
We prove that the operad of framed little 2-discs is formal. Tamarkin and Kontsevich each proved that the unframed 2-discs operad is formal. The unframed 2-discs is an operad in the category of S^1-spaces, and the framed 2-discs operad can be constructed from the unframed 2-discs by forming the operadic semidirect product with the circle group. The idea of our proof is to show that Kontsevich's chain of quasi-isomorphisms is compatible with the circle actions and so one can essentially take the operadic semidirect product with the homology of S^1 everywhere to obtain a chain of quasi-isomorphi…
We use mixed Hodge theory to show that the functor of singular chains with rational coefficients is formal as a lax symmetric monoidal functor, when restricted to complex schemes whose weight filtration in cohomology satisfies a certain purity property. This has direct applications to the formality of operads or, more generally, of algebraic structures encoded by a colored operad. We also prove a dual statement, with applications to formality in the context of rational homotopy theory. In the general case of complex schemes with non-pure weight filtration, we relate the singular chains functor…
We construct a canonical chain of formality quasiisomorphisms for the operad of chains on framed little disks and the operad of chains on little disks. The construction is done in terms of logarithmic algebraic geometry and is remarkable for being rational (and indeed definable integrally) in de Rham cohomology.
Let overline{M}_{g,n} be the moduli space of stable algebraic curves of genus g with n marked points. With the operations which relate the different moduli spaces identifying marked points, the family (overline{M}_{g,n})_{g,n} is a modular operad of projective smooth Deligne-Mumford stacks, overline{M}. In this paper we prove that the modular operad of singular chains C_*(overline{M};Q) is formal; so it is weakly equivalent to the modular operad of its homology H_*(overline{M};Q). As a consequence, the "up to homotopy" algebras of these two operads are the same. To obtain this result we prove …
In the theory of operads we consider functors of generalized symmetric powers defined by sums of coinvariant modules under actions of symmetric groups. One observes classically that the construction of symmetric functors provides an isomorphism from the category of symmetric modules to a subcategory of the category of functors on the base category. The purpose of this book is to obtain a similar relationship for functors on a category of algebras over an operad. We observe that right modules over operads, symmetric modules equipped with a right operad action, give rise to functors on categorie…
We study the splitting of the Goodwillie towers of functors in various settings. In particular, we produce splitting criteria for functors $F: \A \to M_A$ from a pointed category with coproducts to $A$-modules in terms of differentials of $F$. Here $A$ is a commutative $S$-algebra. We specialize to the case when $\A$ is the category of $\a$-algebras for an operad $\a$ and $F$ is the forgetful functor, and derive milder splitting conditions in terms of the derivative of $F$. In addition, we describe how triples induce operads, and prove that, roughly speaking, a triple $T$ is naturally equivale…
In this paper, we give a description of polynomial functors from (finitely generated free) groups to abelian groups in terms of non-linear Mackey functors generalizing those given in a paper of Baues-Dreckmann-Franjou-Pirashvili published in 2001. This description is a consequence of our two main results: a description of functors from (fi nitely generated free) P-algebras (for P a set-operad) to abelian groups in terms of non-linear Mackey functors and the isomorphism between polynomial functors on (finitely generated free) monoids and those on (finitely generated free) groups. Polynomial fun…
Let F be a homotopy functor with values in the category of spectra. We show that partially stabilized cross-effects of F have an action of a certain operad. For functors from based spaces to spectra, it is the Koszul dual of the little discs operad. For functors from spectra to spectra it is a desuspension of the commutative operad. It follows that the Goodwillie derivatives of F are a right module over a certain `pro-operad'. For functors from spaces to spectra, the pro-operad is a resolution of the topological Lie operad. For functors from spectra to spectra, it is a resolution of the trivia…
We study the subcategory of topological operads $P$ such that $P(0) = *$ (the category of unitary operads in our terminology). We use that this category inherits a model structure, like the category of all operads in topological spaces, and that the embedding functor of this subcategory of unitary operads into the category of all operads admits a left Quillen adjoint. We prove that the derived functor of this left Quillen adjoint functor induces a left inverse of the derived functor of our category embedding at the homotopy category level. We deduce from this result that the derived mapping sp…
Let $O$ be a differential graded (possibly colored) operad defined over rationals. Let us assume that there exists a zig-zag of quasi-isomorphisms connecting $O \otimes K$ to its cohomology, where $K$ is any field extension of rationals. We show that for a large class of such dg operads, a formality quasi-isomorphism for $O$ exists and can be constructed recursively. Every step of our recursive procedure involves a solution of a finite dimensional linear system and it requires no explicit knowledge about the zig-zag of quasi-isomorphisms connecting $O \otimes K$ to its cohomology.
We consider the endomorphism operad of a functor, which is roughly the object of natural transformations from (monoidal) powers of that functor to itself. There are many examples from geometry, topology, and algebra where this object has already been implicitly studied. We ask whether the endomorphism operad of the forgetful functor from algebras over an operad to the ground category recovers that operad. The answer is positive for operads in vector spaces over an infinite field, but negative both in vector spaces over finite fields and in sets. Several examples are computed.
We apply Weyl $n$-algebras to prove formality theorems for higher Hochschild cohomology. We present two approaches: via propagators and via the factorization complex. It is shown that the second approach is equivalent to the first one taken with a new family of propagators we introduce.
Using functional equations, we define functors that generalize standard examples from calculus of one variable. Examples of such functors are discussed and their Taylor towers are computed. We also show that these functors factor through objects enriched over the homology of little $n$-cubes operads and discuss the relationship between functors defined via functional equations and operads. In addition, we compute the differentials of the forgetful functor from the category of $n$-Poisson algebras in terms of the homology of configuration spaces.
We develop further the theory of operads and analytic functors. In particular, we introduce a bicategory that has operads as 0-cells, operad bimodules as 1-cells and operad bimodule maps as 2-cells, and prove that this bicategory is cartesian closed. In order to obtain this result, we extend the theory of distributors and the formal theory of monads.
We study the structure possessed by the Goodwillie derivatives of a pointed homotopy functor of based topological spaces. These derivatives naturally form a bimodule over the operad consisting of the derivatives of the identity functor. We then use these bimodule structures to give a chain rule for higher derivatives in the calculus of functors, extending that of Klein and Rognes. This chain rule expresses the derivatives of FG as a derived composition product of the derivatives of F and G over the derivatives of the identity. There are two main ingredients in our proofs. Firstly, we construct…
We develop an alternative to the May-Thomason construction used to compare operad based infinite loop machines to that of Segal, which relies on weak products. Our construction has the advantage that it can be carried out in $Cat$, whereas their construction gives rise to simplicial categories. As an application we show that a simplicial algebra over a $Σ$-free $Cat$ operad $\mathcal{O}$ is functorially weakly equivalent to a $Cat$ algebra over $\mathcal{O}$. When combined with the results of a previous paper, this allows us to conclude that up to weak equivalences the category of $\mathcal{O}…
The goal of this paper is to furnish a literature on Goodwillie calculus for functors defined between categories which derive from chain complexes over a ground field $\Bbbk.$ We characterize homogeneous functors $F: \mathcal{C} \longrightarrow \mathcal{D}$ where $\mathcal{C} ,\mathcal{D}= Ch$ (chain complexes), $Ch_+$(non-negatively graded chain complexes) or $\text{Alg}_\mathcal{O}$ (algebras over a chain complex operad $\mathcal{O}$). In the particular case when $\mathcal{D}= \text{Alg}_\mathcal{O},$ our characterization requires $\Bbbk$ to be of characteristics $0.$ We are then extending t…
We construct a spectral sequence converging to the homology of the ordered configuration spaces of a product of parallelizable manifolds. To identify the second page of this spectral sequence, we introduce a version of the Boardman--Vogt tensor product for linear operadic modules, a purely algebraic operation. Using the rational formality of the little cubes operads, we show that our spectral sequence collapses in characteristic zero.
We prove that for a topological operad $P$ the operad of oriented cubical chains, $C^{ord}_\ast(P)$, and the operad of singular chains, $S_\ast(P)$, are weakly equivalent. As a consequence, $C^{ord}_\ast(P;\mathbb{Q})$ is formal if and only if $S_\ast(P;\mathbb{Q})$ is formal, thus linking together some formality results spread in the literature. The proof is based on an acyclic models theorem for monoidal functors. We give different variants of the acyclic models theorem and apply the contravariant case to study the cohomology theories for simplicial sets defined by $R$-simplicial differentia…
We generalize Berger and Moerdijk's results on axiomatic homotopy theory for operads to the setting of enriched symmetric monoidal model categories, and show how this theory applies to orthogonal spectra. In particular, we provide a symmetric fibrant replacement functor for the positive stable model structure.
The derivatives of the identity functor on spaces in Goodwillie calculus forms an operad in spectra. Antolin-Camarena computed the mod 2 homology of free algebras over this operad for 1-connected spectra. In this present paper we carry out similar computations for mod p homology for odd primes p.
We describe a category of undirected graphs which comes equipped with a faithful functor into the category of (colored) modular operads. The associated singular functor from modular operads to presheaves is fully faithful, and its essential image can be classified by a Segal condition. This theorem can be used to recover a related statement, due to André Joyal and Joachim Kock, concerning a larger category of undirected graphs whose functor to modular operads is not just faithful but also full.
It is well known that the forgetful functor from symmetric operads to nonsymmetric operads has a left adjoint $Sym_1$ given by product with the symmetric group operad. It is also well known that this functor does not affect the category of algebras of the operad. From the point of view of the author's theory of higher operads, the nonsymmmetric operads are 1-operads and $Sym_1$ is the first term of the infinite series of left adjoint functors $Sym_n,$ called symmetrisation functors, from $n$-operads to symmetric operads with the property that the category of one object, one arrow, . . ., one $…
We prove two theorems about Goodwillie calculus and use those theorems to describe new models for Goodwillie derivatives of functors between pointed compactly-generated infinity-categories. The first theorem say that the construction of higher derivatives for spectrum-valued functors is a Day convolution of copies of the first derivative construction. The second theorem says that the derivatives of any functor can be realized as natural transformation objects for derivatives of spectrum-valued functors. Together these results allow us to construct an infinity-operad that models the derivatives…
We study a connection between mapping spaces of bimodules and of infinitesimal bimodules over an operad. As main application and motivation of our work, we produce an explicit delooping of the manifold calculus tower associated to the space of smooth maps $D^{m}\rightarrow D^{n}$ of discs, $n\geq m$, avoiding any given multisingularity and coinciding with the standard inclusion near $\partial D^{m}$. In particular, we give a new proof of the delooping of the space of disc embeddings in terms of little discs operads maps with the advantage that it can be applied to more general mapping spaces.
The functor between operadic algebras given by restriction along an operad map generally has a left adjoint. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the restriction functor to admit a right adjoint. The condition is a factorization axiom which roughly says that operations in the codomain operad can be written essentially uniquely as operations in arity one followed by operations in the domain operad.
In this article is studied the construction of free operads functor, for the symmetric and non-symmetric case. In order to do this, the operads are seen as monoids on the differential graded modules category. In the last part we show some properties between the associated functors of this construction that may help to better understand the mechanism in this process.
We show that a profinite completion functor for (simplicial or topological) operads with good homotopical properties can be constructed as a left Quillen functor from an appropriate model category of infinity-operads to a certain model category of profinite infinity-operads. The construction is based on a notion of lean infinity-operad, and we characterize those infinity-operads weakly equivalent to lean ones in terms of homotopical finiteness properties. Several variants of the construction are also discussed, such as the cases of unital (or closed) infinity-operads and of infinity-categories…
It was shown in a recent paper by Boavida de Brito and Weiss that a well-known construction which to a plain (=monochromatic) topological operad associates a topological category and a functor from it to the category of finite sets is homotopically fully faithful, under mild conditions on the operads. The main result here is a generalization of that statement to k-truncated plain topological operads. A k-truncated operad is a weaker version of operad where all operations have arity at most k.
We prove the validity over $\mathbb{R}$ of a commutative differential graded algebra model of configuration spaces for simply connected closed smooth manifolds, answering a conjecture of Lambrechts--Stanley. We get as a result that the real homotopy type of such configuration spaces only depends on the real homotopy type of the manifold. We moreover prove, if the dimension of the manifold is at least $4$, that our model is compatible with the action of the Fulton--MacPherson operad (weakly equivalent to the little disks operad) when the manifold is framed. We use this more precise result to ge…
In this paper, we describe a general theory of modules over an algebra over an operad. We also study functors between categories of modules. Specializing to the operad E_d of little d-dimensional disks, we show that each (d-1)-manifold gives rise to a theory of modules over E_d-algebras and each bordism gives rise to a functor from the category defined by its incoming boundary to the category defined by its outgoing boundary. We describe how to assemble these categories into a map from a certain operad to the operad of (infinity)-categories.
We show that topological Quillen homology of algebras and modules over operads in symmetric spectra can be calculated by realizations of simplicial bar constructions. Working with several model category structures, we give a homotopical proof after showing that certain homotopy colimits in algebras and modules over operads can be easily understood. A key result here, which lies at the heart of this paper, is showing that the forgetful functor commutes with certain homotopy colimits. We also prove analogous results for algebras and modules over operads in unbounded chain complexes.
The normalized cochain complex of a simplicial set N^*(Y) is endowed with the structure of an E_{infinity} algebra. More specifically, we prove in a previous article that N^*(Y) is an algebra over the Barratt-Eccles operad. According to M. Mandell, under reasonable completeness assumptions, this algebra structure determines the homotopy type of Y. In this article, we construct a model of the mapping space Map(X,Y). For that purpose, we extend the formalism of Lannes' T functor in the framework of E_{infinity} algebras. Precisely, in the category of algebras over the Barratt-Eccles operad, we h…
