The normalized cochain complex of a simplicial set N^*(Y) is endowed with the structure of an E_{infinity} algebra. More specifically, we prove in a previous article that N^*(Y) is an algebra over the Barratt-Eccles operad. According to M. Mandell, under reasonable completeness assumptions, this algebra structure determines the homotopy type of Y. In this article, we construct a model of the mapping space Map(X,Y). For that purpose, we extend the formalism of Lannes' T functor in the framework of E_{infinity} algebras. Precisely, in the category of algebras over the Barratt-Eccles operad, we have a division functor -oslash N_(X) which is left adjoint to the functor Hom_F(N_*(X),-). We prove that the associated left derived functor -oslash^L N_*(X) is endowed with a quasi-isomorphism N^*(Y) oslash^L N_*(X) --> N^* Map(X,Y).
We prove that, in the category F of functors between F\_2-vector spaces, the tensor product between the second non constant standard injective functor and an exterior power functor is artinian. The only cas known to date was the artinian character of this injective ; our result is a step in the study of the third non constant standard injective. We use the division functor by the identity functor and facts from modular representation theory of the symmetric groups to obtain this theorem by detecing suitable composition factors.
We prove that the Goodwillie tower of a weak equivalence preserving functor from spaces to spectra can be expressed in terms of the tower for stable mapping spaces. Our proof is motivated by interpreting the functors P_n and D_n as pseudo-differential operators which suggests certain `integral' presentations based on a derived Yoneda embedding. These models allow one to extend computational tools available for the tower of stable mapping spaces. As an application we give a classical expression for the derivative over the basepoint.
We study a connection between mapping spaces of bimodules and of infinitesimal bimodules over an operad. As main application and motivation of our work, we produce an explicit delooping of the manifold calculus tower associated to the space of smooth maps $D^{m}\rightarrow D^{n}$ of discs, $n\geq m$, avoiding any given multisingularity and coinciding with the standard inclusion near $\partial D^{m}$. In particular, we give a new proof of the delooping of the space of disc embeddings in terms of little discs operads maps with the advantage that it can be applied to more general mapping spaces.
A covariant functor from the category of mapping tori to a category of AF-algebras is constructed; the functor takes continuous maps between such manifolds to stable homomorphisms between the corresponding AF-algebras. We use this functor to develop an obstruction theory for the torus bundles of dimension 2, 3 and 4.
We show that if A is a simply connected, finite, pointed CW-complex then the mapping spaces Map(A, -) are preserved by the localization functors only if A has the rational homotopy type of a wedge of spheres of a fixed dimension.
We produce a highly structured way of associating a simplicial category to a model category which improves on work of Dwyer and Kan and answers a question of Hovey. We show that model categories satisfying a certain axiom are Quillen equivalent to simplicial model categories. A simplicial model category provides higher order structure such as composable mapping spaces and homotopy colimits. We also show that certain homotopy invariant functors can be replaced by weakly equivalent simplicial, or `continuous', functors. This is used to show that if a simplicial model category structure exists on…
In this paper we study envy-free division problems. The classical approach to such problems, used by David Gale, reduces to considering continuous maps of a simplex to itself and finding sufficient conditions for this map to hit the center of the simplex. The mere continuity of the map is not sufficient for reaching such a conclusion. Classically, one makes additional assumptions on the behavior of the map on the boundary of the simplex (for example, in the Knaster--Kuratowski--Mazurkiewicz and the Gale theorem). We follow Erel Segal-Halevi, Frédéric Meunier, and Shira Zerbib, and replace the …
We study the subcategory of topological operads $P$ such that $P(0) = *$ (the category of unitary operads in our terminology). We use that this category inherits a model structure, like the category of all operads in topological spaces, and that the embedding functor of this subcategory of unitary operads into the category of all operads admits a left Quillen adjoint. We prove that the derived functor of this left Quillen adjoint functor induces a left inverse of the derived functor of our category embedding at the homotopy category level. We deduce from this result that the derived mapping sp…
Let M denote the mapping class group of S, a compact connected oriented surface with one boundary component. The action of M on the nilpotent quotients of the fundamental group of S allows to define the so-called Johnson filtration and the Johnson homomorphisms. J. Levine introduced a new filtration of M, called the Lagrangian filtration. He also introduced a version of the Johnson homomorphisms for this new filtration. The first term of the Lagrangian filtration is the Lagrangian mapping class group, whose definition involves a handlebody bounded by S, and which contains the Torelli group. Th…
We study the questions of how to recognize when a simplicial set X is of the form X=map(Y,A) for a given space A, and how to recover Y from X, if so. A full answer is provided when A=K(R,n), for $R=\mathbb{F}_p$ or $\mathbb{Q}$, in terms of a mapping algebra structure on X (defined in terms of product-preserving simplicial functors out of a certain simplicially-enriched sketch). In addition, when A is a suitable infinite loop space for a suitable connective ring spectrum, we can recover Y from map(Y,A) given such a mapping algebra structure. Most importantly, our methods provide a new way of l…
Physicists showed that the generating function of orbifold elliptic genera of symmetric orbifolds can be written as an infinite product. We show that there exists a geometric factorization on space level behind this infinite product formula in much more general framework, where factors in the infinite product correspond to isomorphism classes of connected finite covering spaces of manifolds involved. From this formula, a concept of geometric Hecke operators for functors emerges. We show that these Hecke operators indeed satisfy the usual identity of Hecke operators for the case of 2-dimensiona…
Classification questions are often about understanding components of a category. It is much more desirable however to be able to understand the entire homotopy type of this category and not just the set of its components. In this paper we prove that this is possible for the category of functors indexed a small category I which assign to any morphism in I a weak equivalence in a given model category. We identify the homotopy type of this category with the mapping space out of the nerve of I into the classifying space of the space of weak equivalences of values of these functors. We use it to re…
Let Map_T(K,X) denote the mapping space of continuous based functions between two based spaces K and X. If K is a fixed finite complex, Greg Arone has recently given an explicit model for the Goodwillie tower of the functor sending a space X to the suspension spectrum Σ^\infty Map_T(K,X). Applying a generalized homology theory h_* to this tower yields a spectral sequence, and this will converge strongly to h_*(Map_T(K,X)) under suitable conditions, e.g. if h_* is connective and X is at least dim K connected. Even when the convergence is more problematic, it appears the spectral sequence can st…
We prove a general representation stability result for polynomial coefficient systems which lets us prove representation stability and secondary homological stability for many families of groups with polynomial coefficients. This gives two generalizations of classical homological stability theorems with twisted coefficients. We apply our results to prove homological stability for hyperelliptic mapping class groups with twisted coefficients, prove new representation stability results for congruence subgroups, establish secondary homological stability for groups of diffeomorphisms of surfaces vi…
Given any modular category $\mathcal{C}$ over an algebraically closed field $k$, we extract a sequence $(M_g)_{g\geq 0}$ of $\mathcal{C}$-bimodules. We show that the Hochschild chain complex $CH(\mathcal{C};M_g)$ of $\mathcal{C}$ with coefficients in $M_g$ carries a canonical homotopy coherent projective action of the mapping class group of the surface of genus $g+1$. The ordinary Hochschild complex of $\mathcal{C}$ corresponds to $CH(\mathcal{C};M_0)$. This result is obtained as part of the following more comprehensive topological structure: We construct a symmetric monoidal functor $\mathfra…
We prove the following generalization of a classical result of Adams: for any pointed and connected topological space $(X,b)$, that is not necessarily simply connected, the cobar construction of the differential graded (dg) coalgebra of normalized singular chains in $X$ with vertices at $b$ is weakly equivalent as a differential graded associative algebra (dga) to the singular chains on the Moore based loop space of $X$ at $b$. We deduce this statement from several more general categorical results of independent interest. We construct a functor $\mathfrak{C}_{\square_c}$ from simplicial sets t…
We extend some classical results - such as Quillen's Theorem A, the Grothendieck construction, Thomason's Theorem and the characterisation of homotopically cofinal functors - from the homotopy theory of small categories to polynomial monads and their algebras. As an application we give a categorical proof of the Dwyer-Hess and Turchin results concerning the explicit double delooping of spaces of long knots.
Over a field of characteristic zero, we show that the forgetful functor from the homotopy category of commutative dg algebras to the homotopy category of dg associative algebras is faithful. In fact, the induced map of derived mapping spaces gives an injection on all homotopy groups at any basepoint. We prove similar results both for unital and non-unital algebras, and also Koszul dually for the universal enveloping algebra functor from dg Lie algebras to dg associative algebras. An important ingredient is a natural model for these derived mapping spaces as Maurer-Cartan spaces of complete fil…
Simplicial presheaves on cartesian spaces provide a general notion of smooth spaces. There is a corresponding smooth version of the singular complex functor, which maps smooth spaces to simplicial sets. We consider the localisation of the (projective or injective) model category of smooth spaces at the morphisms which become weak equivalences under the singular complex functor. We prove that this localisation agrees with a motivic-style $\mathbb{R}$-localisation of the model category of smooth spaces. Further, we exhibit the singular complex functor for smooth spaces as one of several Quillen …
We characterize, for every higher smooth stack equipped with "tangential structure", the induced higher group extension of the geometric realization of its higher automorphism stack. We show that when restricted to smooth manifolds equipped with higher degree topological structures, this produces higher extensions of homotopy types of diffeomorphism groups. Passing to the groups of connected components, we obtain abelian extensions of mapping class groups and we derive sufficient conditions for these being central. We show as a special case that this provides an elegant re-construction of Sega…
We describe spectral model category structures on the categories of cyclotomic spectra and $p$-cyclotomic spectra (in orthogonal spectra) with triangulated homotopy categories. We show that the functors $TR$ and $TC$ are corepresentable in these categories. Specifically, the derived mapping spectrum out of the sphere spectrum in the category of cyclotomic spectra corepresents the finite completion of $TC$ and the derived mapping spectrum out of the sphere spectrum in the category of $p$-cyclotomic spectra corepresents the $p$-completion of $TC(-;p)$.

Continuation of algebraic structures in families of dynamical systems is described using category theory, sheaves, and lattice algebras. Well-known concepts in dynamics, such as attractors or invariant sets, are formulated as functors on appropriate categories of dynamical systems mapping to categories of lattices, posets, rings or abelian groups. Sheaves are constructed from such functors, which encode data about the continuation of structure as system parameters vary. Similarly, morphisms for the sheaves in question arise from natural transformations. This framework is applied to a variety o…
Suppose that $n\neq p^k$ and $n\neq 2p^k$ for all $k$ and all primes $p$. We prove that for any Hausdorff compactum $X$ with a free action of the symmetric group $\mathfrak S_n$ there exists an $\mathfrak S_n$-equivariant map $X \to {\mathbb R}^n$ whose image avoids the diagonal $\{(x,x\dots,x)\in {\mathbb R}^n|x\in {\mathbb R}\}$. Previously, the special cases of this statement for certain $X$ were usually proved using the equivartiant obstruction theory. Such calculations are difficult and may become infeasible past the first (primary) obstruction. We take a different approach which allows u…
