We prove that for a topological operad $P$ the operad of oriented cubical chains, $C^{ord}_\ast(P)$, and the operad of singular chains, $S_\ast(P)$, are weakly equivalent. As a consequence, $C^{ord}_\ast(P;\mathbb{Q})$ is formal if and only if $S_\ast(P;\mathbb{Q})$ is formal, thus linking together some formality results spread in the literature. The proof is based on an acyclic models theorem for monoidal functors. We give different variants of the acyclic models theorem and apply the contravariant case to study the cohomology theories for simplicial sets defined by $R$-simplicial differential graded algebras.
I describe a generalization of the notion of operadic category due to Batanin and Markl. For each such operadic category I describe a skew monoidal category of collections, such that a monoid in this skew monoidal category is precisely an operad over the operadic category. In fact I describe two skew monoidal categories with this property. The first has the feature that the operadic category can be recovered from the skew monoidal category of collections; the second has the feature that the right unit constraint is invertible. In the case of the operadic category S of finite sets and functions…
A general notion of operad is given, which includes as instances, the operads originally conceived to study loop spaces, as well as the higher operads that arise in the globular approach to higher dimensional algebra. In the framework of this paper, one can also describe symmetric and braided analogues of higher operads, likely to be important to the study of weakly symmetric, higher dimensional monoidal structures.
We use Lurie's symmetric monoidal envelope functor to give two new descriptions of $\infty$-operads: as certain symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories whose underlying symmetric monoidal $\infty$-groupoids are free, and as certain symmetric monoidal $\infty$-categories equipped with a symmetric monoidal functor to finite sets (with disjoint union as tensor product). The latter leads to a third description of $\infty$-operads, as a localization of a presheaf $\infty$-category, and we use this to give a simple proof of the equivalence between Lurie's and Barwick's models for $\infty$-operads.
Operads were originally defined as V-operads, that is, enriched in a symmetric or braided monoidal category V. The symmetry or braiding in V is required in order to describe the associativity axiom the operads must obey, as well as the associativity that must be a property of the action of an operad on any of its algebras. After a review of the role of operads in loop space theory and higher categories we go over definitions of iterated monoidal categories and introduce a large family of simple examples. Then we generalize the definition of operad by defining n-fold operads and their algebras …
We extend the W-construction of Boardman and Vogt to operads of an arbitrary monoidal model category with suitable interval, and show that it provides a cofibrant resolution for well-pointed sigma-cofibrant operads. The standard simplicial resolution of Godement as well as the cobar-bar chain resolution are shown to be particular instances of this generalised W-construction.
We decribe the correspondence between normalised $ω$-operads and certain lax monoidal structures on the category of globular sets. As with ordinary monoidal categories, one has a notion of category enriched in a lax monoidal category. Within the aforementioned correspondence, we provide also an equivalence between the algebras of a given normalised $ω$-operad, and categories enriched in globular sets for the induced lax monoidal structure.
This paper is a companion for the paper "Monoidal Bousfield Localizations and Algebras over Operads," part of the author's PhD thesis. This paper was written in 2015 for the first edition of "Enchiridion: Mathematics User's Guides." More User's Guides can be found at https://mathusersguides.com/
The structure of a $k$-fold monoidal category as introduced by Balteanu, Fiedorowicz, Schwänzl and Vogt can be seen as a weaker structure than a symmetric or even braided monoidal category. In this paper we show that it is still sufficient to permit a good definition of ($n$-fold) operads in a $k$-fold monoidal category which generalizes the definition of operads in a braided category. Furthermore, the inheritance of structure by the category of operads is actually an inheritance of iterated monoidal structure, decremented by at least two iterations. We prove that the category of $n$-fold oper…
We construct for every $\infty$-operad $\mathcal{O}^\otimes$ with certain finite limits new $\infty$-operads of spectrum objects and of commutative group objects in $\mathcal{O}$. We show that these are the universal stable resp. additive $\infty$-operads obtained from $\mathcal{O}^\otimes$. We deduce that for a stably (resp. additively) symmetric monoidal $\infty$-category $\mathcal{C}$ the Yoneda embedding factors through the $\infty$-category of exact, contravariant functors from $\mathcal{C}$ to the $\infty$-category of spectra (resp. connective spectra) and admits a certain multiplicative…
In this paper, we study conditions for extending Quillen model category properties , between two symmetric monoidal categories, to their associated category of symmetric sequences and of operads. Given a Quillen equivalence $λ: \mathcal{C}=Ch_{\Bbbk,t} \leftrightarrows \mathcal{D}: R,$ so that $\mathcal{D}$ is any symmetric monoidal category and the adjoint pair $(λ, R)$ is weak monoidal, we prove that the categories of connected operads $Op_\mathcal{C}$ and $Op_\mathcal{D}$ are Quillen equivalent. This expands an analogous result of Schwede-Shipley(\cite{SS03}) when we replace these categorie…
In this paper we develop the theory of operads, algebras and modules in cofibrantly generated symmetric monoidal model categories. We give J-semi model strucures, which are a slightly weaker version of model structures, for operads and algebras and model structures for modules. In a second part we develop the thoery of S-modules of [EKMM]., which allows a general homotopy theory for commutative algebras and pseudo unital symmetric monoidal categories of modules over them. Finally we prove a base change and projection formula.
We endow categories of non-symmetric operads with natural model structures. We work with no restriction on our operads and only assume the usual hypotheses for model categories with a symmetric monoidal structure. We also study categories of algebras over these operads in enriched non-symmetric monoidal model categories.
Let V be a cofibrantly generated monoidal model category and let M be a monoidal V-model category. Given a cofibrant C-coloured operad P in V, we give sufficient conditions for the fibrant replacement and cofibrant replacement functors in M^C to preserve P-algebra structures. In particular, we show how P-algebra structures can be transferred along derived Quillen adjunctions of monoidal V-model categories, and we apply this result to the Quillen adjunctions defined by enriched Bousfield localizations and colocalizations on M. As an application, we prove that in the category of symmetric spectr…
We develop the rudiments of a theory of parametrized $\infty$-operads, including parametrized generalizations of monoidal envelopes, Day convolution, operadic left Kan extensions, results on limits and colimits of algebras, and the symmetric monoidal Yoneda embedding.
We prove a stabilization theorem for algebras of n-operads in a monoidal model category. It implies a version of Baez-Dolan stabilization hypothesis for Rezk's weak n-categories and some other stabilization results.
We show that the homotopy colimit construction for diagrams of categories with an operad action, recently introduced by Fiedorowicz, Stelzer and Vogt, has the desired homotopy type for diagrams of weak braided monoidal categories. This provides a more flexible way to realize E-2 spaces categorically.
We present a definition of homotopy algebra for an operad, and explore its consequences. The paper should be accessible to topologists, category theorists, and anyone acquainted with operads. After a review of operads and monoidal categories, the definition of homotopy algebra is given. Specifically, suppose that M is a monoidal category in which it makes sense to talk about algebras for some operad P. Then our definition says what a homotopy P-algebra in M is, provided only that some of the morphisms in M have been marked out as `homotopy equivalences'. The bulk of the paper consists of examp…
We give conditions on a monoidal model category M and on a set of maps C so that the Bousfield localization of M with respect to C preserves the structure of algebras over various operads. This problem was motivated by an example that demonstrates that, for the model category of equivariant spectra, preservation does not come for free, even for cofibrant operads. We discuss this example in detail and provide a general theorem regarding when localization preserves P-algebra structure for an arbitrary operad P. We characterize the localizations that respect monoidal structure and prove that all …
We consider the endomorphism operad of a functor, which is roughly the object of natural transformations from (monoidal) powers of that functor to itself. There are many examples from geometry, topology, and algebra where this object has already been implicitly studied. We ask whether the endomorphism operad of the forgetful functor from algebras over an operad to the ground category recovers that operad. The answer is positive for operads in vector spaces over an infinite field, but negative both in vector spaces over finite fields and in sets. Several examples are computed.
Let M be a bicomplete, closed symmetric monoidal category. Let P be an operad in M, i.e., a monoid in the category of symmetric sequences of objects in M, with its composition monoidal structure. Let R be a P-co-ring, i.e., a comonoid in the category of P-bimodules. The co-ring R induces a natural ``fattening'' of the category of P-(co)algebras, expanding the morphism sets while leaving the objects fixed. Co-rings over operads are thus ``relative operads,'' parametrizing morphisms as operads parametrize (co)algebras. Let A denote the associative operad in the category of chain complexes. We de…
The category of (colored) props is an enhancement of the category of colored operads, and thus of the category of small categories. The titular category has nice formal properties: it is bicomplete and is a symmetric monoidal category, with monoidal product closely related to the Boardman-Vogt tensor product of operads. Tools developed in this article, which is the first part of a larger work, include a generalized version of multilinearity of functors, a free prop construction defined on certain "generalized graphs", and the relationship between the category of props and the categories of per…
In this paper we initiate the study of enriched $\infty$-operads. We introduce several models for these objects, including enriched versions of Barwick's Segal operads and the dendroidal Segal spaces of Cisinski and Moerdijk, and show these are equivalent. Our main results are a version of Rezk's completion theorem for enriched $\infty$-operads: localization at the fully faithful and essentially surjective morphisms is given by the full subcategory of complete objects, and a rectification theorem: the homotopy theory of $\infty$-operads enriched in the $\infty$-category arising from a nice sym…
We extend Thomason's homotopy colimit construction in the category of permutative categories to categories of algebras over an arbitrary $\Cat$ operad and analyze its properties. We then use this homotopy colimit to prove that the classifying space functor induces an equivalence between the category of $n$-fold monoidal categories and the category of $\mathcal{C}_n$-spaces after formally inverting certain classes of weak equivalences, where $\mathcal{C}_n$ is the little $n$-cubes operad. As a consequence we obtain an equivalence of the categories of $n$-fold monoidal categories and the categor…
We introduce simple models for associative algebras and bimodules in the context of non-symmetric $\infty$-operads, and use these to construct an $(\infty,2)$-category of associative algebras, bimodules, and bimodule homomorphisms in a monoidal $\infty$-category. By working with $\infty$-operads over $Δ^{n,\text{op}}$ we iterate these definitions and generalize our construction to get an $(\infty,n+1)$-category of $E_{n}$-algebras and iterated bimodules in an $E_{n}$-monoidal $\infty$-category. Moreover, we show that if $\mathcal{C}$ is an $E_{n+k}$-monoidal $\infty$-category then the $(\infty…
We use mixed Hodge theory to show that the functor of singular chains with rational coefficients is formal as a lax symmetric monoidal functor, when restricted to complex schemes whose weight filtration in cohomology satisfies a certain purity property. This has direct applications to the formality of operads or, more generally, of algebraic structures encoded by a colored operad. We also prove a dual statement, with applications to formality in the context of rational homotopy theory. In the general case of complex schemes with non-pure weight filtration, we relate the singular chains functor…
We introduce categorical models of $N_\infty$ spaces, which we call normed symmetric monoidal categories (NSMCs). These are ordinary symmetric monoidal categories equipped with compatible families of norm maps, and when specialized to a particular class of examples, they reveal a connection between the equivariant symmetric monoidal categories of Guillou-May-Merling-Osorno and those of Hill-Hopkins. We also give an operadic interpretation of the Mac Lane coherence theorem and generalize it to include NSMCs. Among other things, this theorem ensures that the classifying space of a NSMC is a $N_\…
Higher-dimensional category theory is the study of n-categories, operads, braided monoidal categories, and other such exotic structures. It draws its inspiration from areas as diverse as topology, quantum algebra, mathematical physics, logic, and theoretical computer science. This is the first book on the subject and lays its foundations. Many examples are given throughout. There is also an introductory chapter motivating the subject for topologists.
We provide general conditions under which the algebras for a coloured operad in a monoidal model category carry a Quillen model structure, and prove a Comparison Theorem to the effect that a weak equivalence between suitable such operads induces a Quillen equivalence between their categories of algebras. We construct an explicit Boardman-Vogt style cofibrant resolution for coloured operads, thereby giving a uniform approach to algebraic structures up to homotopy over coloured operads. The Comparison Theorem implies that such structures can be rectified.
We show that the regular patterns of Getzler (2009) form a 2-category biequivalent to the 2-category of substitudes of Day and Street (2003), and that the Feynman categories of Kaufmann and Ward (2013) form a 2-category biequivalent to the 2-category of coloured operads (with invertible 2-cells). These biequivalences induce equivalences between the corresponding categories of algebras. There are three main ingredients in establishing these biequivalences. The first is a strictification theorem (exploiting Power's General Coherence Result) which allows to reduce to the case where the structure …
This paper is the first of two articles which develop the notion of protoperads. In this one, we construct a new monoidal product on the category of reduced S-modules. We study the associated monoids, called protoperads, which are a generalization of operads. As operads encode algebraic operations with several inputs and one outputs, protoperads encode algebraic operations with the same number of inputs and outputs. We describe the underlying combinatorics of protoperads, and show that there exists a notion of free protoperad. We also show that the monoidal product introduced here is related t…
This paper provides a homotopical version of the adjoint lifting theorem in category theory, allowing for Quillen equivalences to be lifted from monoidal model categories to categories of algebras over colored operads. The generality of our approach allows us to simultaneously answer questions of rectification and of changing the base model category to a Quillen equivalent one. We work in the setting of colored operads, and we do not require them to be $Σ$-cofibrant. Special cases of our main theorem recover many known results regarding rectification and change of model category, as well as nu…
