Let M be a bicomplete, closed symmetric monoidal category. Let P be an operad in M, i.e., a monoid in the category of symmetric sequences of objects in M, with its composition monoidal structure. Let R be a P-co-ring, i.e., a comonoid in the category of P-bimodules. The co-ring R induces a natural ``fattening'' of the category of P-(co)algebras, expanding the morphism sets while leaving the objects fixed. Co-rings over operads are thus ``relative operads,'' parametrizing morphisms as operads parametrize (co)algebras.
Let A denote the associative operad in the category of chain complexes. We define a ``diffracting'' functor that produces A-co-rings from symmetric sequences of chain coalgebras, leading to a multitude of ``fattened'' categories of (co)associative chain (co)algebras. In particular, we obtain a purely operadic description of the categories DASH and DCSH first defined by Gugenheim and Munkholm, via an A-co-ring that has the two-sided Koszul resolution of A as its underlying A-bimodule.
The diffracting functor plays a crucial role in enabling us to prove existence of higher, ``up to homotopy'' structure of morphisms via acyclic models methods. It has already been successfully applied in this sense in a number of recent articles and preprints.
The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, we review applications of the bar duality of operads to the construction of explicit cofibrant replacements in categories of algebras over an operad. In view toward applications, we check that the constructions of the bar duality work properly for algebras over operads in unbounded differential graded modules over a ring. In a second part, we use the operadic cobar construction to define explicit cyclinder objects in the category of operads. Then we apply this construction to prove that certain homotopy morphisms of algebras over operads are equival…
The goal of this paper is to set up an obstruction theory in the context of algebras over an operad and in the framework of differential graded modules over a field. Precisely, the problem we consider is the following: Suppose given two algebras A and B over an operad P and an algebra morphism from the homology of A to the homology of B. Can we realize this morphism as a morphism of P-algebras from A to B in the homotopy category? Also, if the realization exists, is it unique in the homotopy category? We identify obstruction cocycles for this problem, and notice that they live in the first two…
It is well known that the differential graded operad of A_infinity-algebras is a cofibrant replacement (a dg-resolution) of the operad of associative differential graded algebras without units. In this article we find a cofibrant replacement of the operad of associative differential graded algebras with units. Algebras over it are called homotopy unital A_infinity-algebras. We prove that the operad bimodule of A_infinity-morphisms is a cofibrant replacement of the operad bimodule of morphisms of dg-algebras without units. Similarly we show that the operad bimodule of homotopy unital A_infinity…
The category of differential graded operads is a cofibrantly generated model category and as such inherits simplicial mapping spaces. The vertices of an operad mapping space are just operad morphisms. The 1-simplices represent homotopies between morphisms in the category of operads. The goal of this paper is to determine the homotopy of the operadic mapping spaces Map(E_n,C) with a cofibrant E_n-operad on the source and the commutative operad on the target. First, we prove that the homotopy class of a morphism phi: E_n -> C is uniquely determined by a multiplicative constant which gives the ac…
We show that morphisms from n A_infinity-algebras to a single one are maps over an operad module with n+1 commuting actions of the operad A_infinity, whose algebras are conventional A_infinity-algebras. Similar statement holds for homotopy unital A_infinity-algebras. The operad A_infinity and modules over it have two useful gradings related by isomorphisms which change the degree. The composition of A_infinity-morphisms with several entries is presented as a convolution of a coalgebra-like and an algebra-like structures. For this sake notions of lax Cat-span multicategories and multifunctors a…
In an application of the notion of twisting structures introduced by Hess and Lack, we define twisted composition products of symmetric sequences of chain complexes that are degreewise projective and finitely generated. Let Q be a cooperad and let BP be the bar construction on the operad P. To each morphism of cooperads g from Q to BP is associated a P-co-ring, K(g), which generalizes the two-sided Koszul and bar constructions. When the co-unit from K(g) to P is a quasi-isomorphism, we show that the Kleisli category for K(g) is isomorphic to the category of P-algebras and of their morphisms up…
Derived A-infinity algebras were developed recently by Sagave. Their advantage over classical A-infinity algebras is that no projectivity assumptions are needed to study minimal models of differential graded algebras. We explain how derived A-infinity algebras can be viewed as algebras over an operad. More specifically, we describe how this operad arises as a resolution of the operad dAs encoding bidgas. This generalises the established result describing the operad A-infinity as a resolution of the operad As encoding associative algebras. We further show Sagave's definition of morphisms agrees…
Generalizing a result of Dwyer and Kan for simplicial categories, we characterize the morphisms of multi-sorted simplicial algebraic theories and simplicial coloured operads which induce a Quillen equivalence between the corresponding categories of algebras.
We establish model category structures on algebras and modules over operads in symmetric spectra, and study when a morphism of operads induces a Quillen equivalence between corresponding categories of algebras (resp. modules) over operads.
We introduce twisted arrow categories of operads and of algebras over operads. Up to equivalence of categories, the simplex category $Δ$, Segal's category $Γ$, Connes cyclic category $Λ$, Moerdijk-Weiss dendroidal category $Ω$, and categories similar to graphical categories of Hackney-Robertson-Yau are twisted arrow categories of symmetric or cyclic operads. Twisted arrow categories of operads admit Segal presheaves and 2-Segal presheaves, or decomposition spaces. Twisted arrow category of an operad $P$ is the $(\infty, 1)$-localization of the corresponding category $Ω/P$ by the boundary prese…
We give sufficient conditions for homotopical localization functors to preserve algebras over coloured operads in monoidal model categories. Our approach encompasses a number of previous results about preservation of structures under localizations, such as loop spaces or infinite loop spaces, and provides new results of the same kind. For instance, under suitable assumptions, homotopical localizations preserve ring spectra (in the strict sense, not only up to homotopy), modules over ring spectra, and algebras over commutative ring spectra, as well as ring maps, module maps, and algebra maps. I…
In previous works by the authors, a bifunctor was associated to any operadic twisting morphism, taking a coalgebra over a cooperad and an algebra over an operad, and giving back the space of (graded) linear maps between them endowed with a homotopy Lie algebra structure. We build on this result by using a more general notion of $\infty$-morphism between (co)algebras over a (co)operad associated to a twisting morphism, and show that this bifunctor can be extended to take such $\infty$-morphisms in either one of its two slots. We also provide a counterexample proving that it cannot be coherently…
In this article we give a construction of a polynomial 2-monad from an operad and describe the algebras of the 2-monads which then arise. This construction is different from the standard construction of a monad from an operad in that the algebras of our associated 2-monad are the categorified algebras of the original operad. Moreover it enables us to characterise operads as categorical polynomial monads in a canonical way. This point of view reveals categorical polynomial monads as a unifying environment for operads, Cat-operads and clubs. We recover the standard construction of a monad from a…
This paper studies the homotopy theory of algebras and homotopy algebras over an operad. It provides an exhaustive description of their higher homotopical properties using the more general notion of morphisms called infinity-morphisms. The method consists in using the operadic calculus to endow the category of coalgebras over the Koszul dual cooperad or the bar construction with a new type of model category structure, Quillen equivalent to that of algebras. We provide an explicit homotopy equivalence for infinity-morphisms, which gives a simple description of the homotopy category, and we endo…
Given a coalgebra C over a cooperad, and an algebra A over an operad, it is often possible to define a natural homotopy Lie algebra structure on hom(C,A), the space of linear maps between them, called the convolution algebra of C and A. In the present article, we use convolution algebras to define the deformation complex for infinity-morphisms of algebras over operads and coalgebras over cooperads. We also complete the study of the compatibility between convolution algebras and infinity-morphisms of algebras and coalgebras. We prove that the convolution algebra bifunctor can be extended to a b…
We show that modular operads are equivalent to modules over a certain simple properad which we call the Brauer properad. Furthermore, we show that, in this setting, the Feynman transform corresponds to the cobar construction for modules of this kind. To make this precise, we extend the machinery of the bar and cobar constructions relative to a twisting morphism to modules over a general properad. This generalizes the classical case of algebras over an operad and might be of independent interest. As an application, we sketch a Koszul duality theory for modular operads.
A moment category is endowed with a distinguished set of split idempotents, called moments, which can be transported along morphisms. Equivalently, a moment category is a category with an active/inert factorisation system fulfilling two simple axioms. These axioms imply that the moments of a fixed object form a monoid, actually a left regular band. Each locally finite unital moment category defines a specific type of operad which records the combinatorics of partitioning moments into elementary ones. In this way the notions of symmetric, non-symmetric and $n$-operad correspond to unital moment…
In his famous paper entitled "Operads and motives in deformation quantization", Maxim Kontsevich constructed (in order to prove the formality of the little d-disks operad) a topological operad, which is called in the literature the Kontsevich operad, and which is denoted Kd in this paper. This operad has a nice structure: it is a multiplicative symmetric operad, that is, it comes with a morphism from the symmetric associative operad. There are many results in the literature concerning the formality of Kd. It is well known (by Kontsevich) that Kd is formal over reals as a symmetric operad. It i…
Equipping a non-equivariant topological E_\infty operad with the trivial G-action gives an operad in G-spaces. The algebra structure encoded by this operad in G-spectra is characterised homotopically by having no non-trivial multiplicative norms. Algebras over this operad are called naive-commutative ring G-spectra. In this paper we let G be a finite group and we show that commutative algebras in the algebraic model for rational G-spectra model the rational naive-commutative ring G-spectra.
We introduce the notions of a commutative square ring $R$ and of a quadratic map between modules over $R$, called $R$-quadratic map. This notion generalizes various notions of quadratic maps between algebraic objects in the literature. We construct a category of quadratic maps between $R$-modules and show that it is a right-quadratic category and has an internal Hom-functor. Along our way, we recall the notions of a general square ring $R$ and of a module over $R$, and discuss their elementary properties in some detail, adopting an operadic point of view. In particular, it turns out that the a…
The aim of this paper is three-fold: (i) we construct a naturally occurring highly homotopy coherent operad structure on the derivatives of the identity functor on structured ring spectra which can be described as algebras over an operad $\mathcal{O}$ in spectra, (ii) we prove that every connected $\mathcal{O}$-algebra has a naturally occurring left action of the derivatives of the identity, and (iii) we show that there is a naturally occurring weak equivalence of highly homotopy coherent operads between the derivatives of the identity on $\mathcal{O}$-algebras and the operad $\mathcal{O}$. Al…
We prove that the modular operad of diffeomorphism classes of Riemann surfaces with both `open' and `closed' boundary components, in the sense of string field theory, is the modular completion of its genus 0 part quotiented by the Cardy condition. We also provide a finitary presentation of a version of this modular two-colored operad and characterize its algebras via morphisms of Frobenius algebras, recovering some previously known results of Kaufmann, Penner and others. As an important auxiliary tool we characterize inclusions of cyclic operads that induce inclusions of their modular completi…
We provide a very general approach to placing model structures and semi-model structures on algebras over symmetric colored operads. Our results require minimal hypotheses on the underlying model category $\mathcal{M}$, and these hypotheses vary depending on what is known about the colored operads in question. We obtain results for the classes of colored operad which are cofibrant as a symmetric collection, entrywise cofibrant, or arbitrary. As the hypothesis on the operad is weakened, the hypotheses on $\mathcal{M}$ must be strengthened. Via a careful development of the categorical algebra of…
We describe a model structure for coloured operads with values in the category of symmetric spectra (with the positive model structure), in which fibrations and weak equivalences are defined at the level of the underlying collections. This allows us to treat R-module spectra (where R is a cofibrant ring spectrum) as algebras over a cofibrant spectrum-valued operad with R as its first term. Using this model structure, we give suficient conditions for homotopical localizations in the category of symmetric spectra to preserve module structures.
An algebraic left Kan extension is a left Kan extension which interacts well with the algebraic structure present in the given situation, and these appear in various subjects such as the homotopy theory of operads and in the study of conformal field theories. In the most interesting examples, the functor along which we left Kan extend goes between categories that enjoy universal properties which express the meaning of the calculation we are trying to understand. These universal properties say that the categories in question are universal examples of some categorical structure possessing some k…
In a recent paper, we described a lifting of coordinate rings of groups, loops, quantum groups, etc. to the categoric setup of operads. In most examples of that paper, these rings are non--commutative. Quantum physics of the XX--th century added one more, quite nontrivial degree of freedom: coordinates might become fermionic. In their classical version, the fermionic coordinates anti--commute, and the resulting rings are called supersymmetric, or SUSY, ones. In this paper, we try to lift operads involving fermionic coordinates to quantum operads. We have to restrict ourselves by lifting operad…
The transfer of the generating operations of an algebra to a homotopy equivalent chain complex produces higher operations. The first goal of this paper is to describe precisely the higher structure obtained when the unary operations commute with the contracting homotopy. To solve this problem, we develop the Koszul duality theory of operads in the category of modules over a cocommutative Hopf algebra. This gives rise to a simpler category of homotopy algebras and infinity-morphisms, which allows us to get a new description of the homotopy category of algebras over such operads. The main exampl…
Equipping a non-equivariant topological $E_\infty$-operad with the trivial $G$-action gives an operad in $G$-spaces. For a $G$-spectrum, being an algebra over this operad does not provide any multiplicative norm maps on homotopy groups. Algebras over this operad are called naïve-commutative ring $G$-spectra. In this paper we take $G=SO(2)$ and we show that commutative algebras in the algebraic model for rational $SO(2)$-spectra model rational naïve-commutative ring $SO(2)$-spectra. In particular, this applies to show that the $SO(2)$-equivariant cohomology associated to an elliptic curve $C$ f…
An affine action of an associative algebra $A$ on a vector space $V$ is an algebra morphism $A \to V \rtimes {\rm End}(V)$, where $V$ is a vector space and $V \rtimes {\rm End}(V)$ is the algebra of affine transformations of $V$. The one dimensional version of the Swiss-Cheese operad, denoted ${\mathrm{\bf{sc}}}_1$, is the operad that governs affine actions of associative algebras. This operad is Koszul and admits a minimal model denoted by $({\mathrm{\bf{sc}}}_1)_\infty$. Algebras over this minimal model are called Homotopy Affine Actions, they consist of an $A_\infty$-morphism $A \to V \rtim…
This paper sets up the foundations for derived algebraic geometry, Goerss--Hopkins obstruction theory, and the construction of commutative ring spectra in the abstract setting of operadic algebras in symmetric spectra in an (essentially) arbitrary model category. We show that one can do derived algebraic geometry a la Toën--Vezzosi in an abstract category of spectra. We also answer in the affirmative a question of Goerss and Hopkins by showing that the obstruction theory for operadic algebras in spectra can be done in the generality of spectra in an (essentially) arbitrary model category. We c…
The purpose of this foundational paper is to introduce various notions and constructions in order to develop the homotopy theory for differential graded operads over any ring. The main new idea is to consider the action of the symmetric groups as part of the defining structure of an operad and not as the underlying category. We introduce a new dual category of higher cooperads, a new higher bar-cobar adjunction with the category of operads, and a new higher notion of homotopy operads, for which we establish the relevant homotopy properties. For instance, the higher bar-cobar construction provi…
We study homotopy-coherent commutative multiplicative structures on equivariant spaces and spectra. We define N-infinity operads, equivariant generalizations of E-infinity operads. Algebras in equivariant spectra over an N-infinity operad model homotopically commutative equivariant ring spectra that only admit certain collections of Hill-Hopkins-Ravenel norms, determined by the operad. Analogously, algebras in equivariant spaces over an N-infinity operad provide explicit constructions of certain transfers. This characterization yields a conceptual explanation of the structure of equivariant in…
We present a definition of homotopy algebra for an operad, and explore its consequences. The paper should be accessible to topologists, category theorists, and anyone acquainted with operads. After a review of operads and monoidal categories, the definition of homotopy algebra is given. Specifically, suppose that M is a monoidal category in which it makes sense to talk about algebras for some operad P. Then our definition says what a homotopy P-algebra in M is, provided only that some of the morphisms in M have been marked out as `homotopy equivalences'. The bulk of the paper consists of examp…
Let V be a cofibrantly generated monoidal model category and let M be a monoidal V-model category. Given a cofibrant C-coloured operad P in V, we give sufficient conditions for the fibrant replacement and cofibrant replacement functors in M^C to preserve P-algebra structures. In particular, we show how P-algebra structures can be transferred along derived Quillen adjunctions of monoidal V-model categories, and we apply this result to the Quillen adjunctions defined by enriched Bousfield localizations and colocalizations on M. As an application, we prove that in the category of symmetric spectr…
The goal of this article is to make explicit a structured complex whose homology computes the cohomology of the p-profinite completion of the n-fold loop space of a sphere of dimension d=n-m<n. This complex is defined purely algebraically, in terms of characteristic structures of E_n-operads. Our construction involves: the free complete algebra in one variable associated to any E_n-operad; and an element in this free complete algebra, which is associated to a morphism from the operad of L-infinity algebras to an operadic suspension of our E_n-operad. We deduce our main theorem from: a connecti…
Elaborating on works by Abouzaid and Mescher, we prove that for a Morse function on a smooth compact manifold, its Morse cochain complex can be endowed with an $ΩB As$-algebra structure by counting moduli spaces of perturbed Morse gradient trees. This rich structure descends to its already known $A_\infty$-algebra structure. We then introduce the notion of $ΩB As$-morphism between two $ΩB As$-algebras and prove that given two Morse functions, one can construct an $ΩB As$-morphism between their associated $ΩB As$-algebras by counting moduli spaces of two-colored perturbed Morse gradient trees. …
We define the notion of a 2-operad relative to an operad, and prove that the 2-associahedra form a 2-operad relative to the associahedra. Using this structure, we define the notions of an $(A_\infty,2)$-category and $(A_\infty,2)$-algebra in spaces and in chain complexes over a ring. Finally, we show that for any continuous map $A \to X$, we can associate an $(A_\infty,2)$-algebra $θ(A \to X)$ in $\textsf{Top}$, which specializes to $θ(\text{pt} \to X) = Ω^2 X$ and $θ(A \to \text{pt}) = ΩA \times ΩA$.
For $\mathcal{O}$ a reduced operad, a generalized divergence from the derivations of a free $\mathcal{O}$-algebra to a suitable trace space is constructed. In the case of the Lie operad, this corresponds to Satoh's trace map and, for the associative operad, to the double divergence of Alekseev, Kawazumi, Kuno and Naef. The generalized divergence is shown to be a $1$-cocycle for the usual Lie algebra structure on derivations. These results place the previous constructions into a unified framework; moreover, they are natural with respect to the operad. An important new ingredient is the use of n…
This thesis is divided into two parts. The first one is composed of recollections on operad theory, model categories, simplicial homotopy theory, rational homotopy theory, Maurer-Cartan spaces, and deformation theory. The second part deals with the theory of convolution algebras and some of their applications, as explained below. Suppose we are given a type of algebras, a type of coalgebras, and a relationship between those types of algebraic structures (encoded by an operad, a cooperad, and a twisting morphism respectively). Then, it is possible to endow the space of linear maps from a coalge…
We show that the topological Hochschild homology THH(R of an E_n-ring spectrum R is an E_{n-1}-ring spectrum. The proof is based on the fact that the tensor product of the operad Ass for monoid structures and the the little n-cubes operad is an E_{n+1}-operad, a result which is of independent interest.
We develop a rigidity criterion to show that in simplicial model categories with a compatible symmetric monoidal structure, operad structures can be automatically lifted along certain maps. This is applied to obtain an unpublished result of M. J. Hopkins that certain towers of generalized Moore spectra, closely related to the K(n)-local sphere, are E-infinity algebras in the category of pro-spectra. In addition, we show that Adams resolutions automatically satisfy the above rigidity criterion. In order to carry this out we develop the concept of an operadic model category, whose objects have h…
Let F denote the homotopy fiber of a map f:K-->L of 2-reduced simplicial sets. Using as input data the strongly homotopy coalgebra structure of the chain complexes of K and L, we construct a small, explicit chain algebra, the homology of which is isomorphic as a graded algebra to the homology of GF, the simplicial (Kan) loop group on F. To construct this model, we develop machinery for modeling the homotopy fiber of a morphism of chain Hopf algebras. Essential to our construction is a generalization of the operadic description of the category DCSH of chain coalgebras and of strongly homotopy c…
We construct small cylinders for cellular non-symmetric DG-operads over an arbitrary commutative ring by using the basic perturbation lemma from homological algebra. We show that our construction, applied to the A-infinity operad, yields the operad parametrizing A-infinity maps whose linear part is the identity. We also compute some other examples with non-trivial operations in arities 1 and 0.
In this paper we develop the $A_\infty$-analog of the Maurer-Cartan simplicial set associated to an $L_\infty$-algebra and show how we can use this to study the deformation theory of $\infty$-morphisms of algebras over non-symmetric operads. More precisely, we define a functor from the category of (curved) $A_\infty$-algebras to simplicial sets which sends an $A_\infty$-algebra to the associated simplicial set of Maurer-Cartan elements. This functor has the property that it gives a Kan complex. We also show that this functor can be used to study deformation problems over a field of characteris…

We establish a highly flexible condition that guarantees that all colored symmetric operads in a symmetric monoidal model category are admissible, i.e., the category of algebras over any operad admits a model structure transferred from the original model category. We also give a necessary and sufficient criterion that ensures that a given weak equivalence of admissible operads admits rectification, i.e., the corresponding Quillen adjunction between the categories of algebras is a Quillen equivalence. In addition, we show that Quillen equivalences of underlying symmetric monoidal model categori…
Working in the context of symmetric spectra, we describe and study a homotopy completion tower for algebras and left modules over operads in the category of modules over a commutative ring spectrum (e.g., structured ring spectra). We prove a strong convergence theorem that for 0-connected algebras and modules over a (-1)-connected operad, the homotopy completion tower interpolates (in a strong sense) between topological Quillen homology and the identity functor. By systematically exploiting strong convergence, we prove several theorems concerning the topological Quillen homology of algebras an…
We describe the multiplicative structures that arise on categories of equivariant modules over certain equivariant commutative ring spectra. Building on our previous work on N-infinity ring spectra, we construct categories of equivariant operadic modules over N-infinity rings that are structured by equivariant linear isometries operads. These categories of modules are endowed with equivariant symmetric monoidal structures, which amounts to the structure of an "incomplete Mackey functor in homotopical categories". In particular, we construct internal norms which satisfy the double coset formula…
The aim of this paper is to show that homotopy pro-nilpotent structured ring spectra are TQ-local, where structured ring spectra are described as algebras over a spectral operad O. Here, TQ is short for topological Quillen homology, which is weakly equivalent to O-algebra stabilization. An O-algebra is called homotopy pro-nilpotent if it is equivalent to a limit of nilpotent O-algebras. Our result provides new positive evidence to a conjecture by Francis-Gaisgory on Koszul duality for general operads. As an application, we simultaneously extend the previously known 0-connected and nilpotent TQ…
We show a homological result for the class of planar or symmetric operad groups: We show that under certain conditions, group (co)homology of such groups with certain coefficients vanishes in all dimensions, provided it vanishes in dimension $0$. This can be applied for example to $l^2$-homology or cohomology with coefficients in the group ring. As a corollary, we obtain explicit vanishing results for Thompson-like groups such as the Brin-Thompson groups $nV$.
