We give a description of unital operads in a symmetric monoidal category as monoids in a monoidal category of unital $Λ$-sequences. This is a new variant of Kelly's old description of operads as monoids in the monoidal category of symmetric sequences. The monads associated to unital operads are the ones of interest in iterated loop space theory and factorization homology, among many other applications. Our new description of unital operads allows an illuminating comparison between the two-sided monadic bar constructions used in such applications and "classical" monoidal two-sided bar constructions. It also allows a more conceptual understanding of the scanning map central to non-abelian Poincaré duality in factorization homology.
In this article we give a construction of a polynomial 2-monad from an operad and describe the algebras of the 2-monads which then arise. This construction is different from the standard construction of a monad from an operad in that the algebras of our associated 2-monad are the categorified algebras of the original operad. Moreover it enables us to characterise operads as categorical polynomial monads in a canonical way. This point of view reveals categorical polynomial monads as a unifying environment for operads, Cat-operads and clubs. We recover the standard construction of a monad from a…
We show that Lurie's model for $\infty$-operads (or more precisely a "flagged" or "pinned" version thereof) is equivalent to the analytic monads previously studied by Gepner, Kock, and the author, with an $\infty$-operad $\mathcal{O}$ corresponding to the monad for $\mathcal{O}$-algebras in spaces. In particular, the $\infty$-operad $\mathcal{O}$ is completely determined by this monad. To prove this we study the Lawvere theories of analytic monads, and show that these are precisely pinned $\infty$-operads in a slight (equivalent) variant of Lurie's definition, where finite pointed sets are rep…
We develop an $\infty$-categorical version of the classical theory of polynomial and analytic functors, initial algebras, and free monads. Using this machinery, we provide a new model for $\infty$-operads, namely $\infty$-operads as analytic monads. We justify this definition by proving that the $\infty$-category of analytic monads is equivalent to that of dendroidal Segal spaces, known to be equivalent to the other existing models for $\infty$-operads.
We discuss a variant of the category of dendroidal sets, the so-called closed dendroidal sets which are indexed by trees without leaves. This category carries a Quillen model structure which behaves better than the one on general dendroidal sets, mainly because it satisfies the pushout-product property, hence induces a symmetric monoidal structure on its homotopy category. We also study complete Segal style model structures on closed dendroidal spaces, and various Quillen adjunctions to model categories on (all) dendroidal sets or spaces. As a consequence, we deduce a Quillen equivalence from …
We develop a curved Koszul duality theory for algebras presented by quadratic-linear-constant relations over unital versions of binary quadratic operads. As an application, we study Poisson $n$-algebras given by polynomial functions on a standard shifted symplectic space. We compute explicit resolutions of these algebras using curved Koszul duality. We use these resolutions to compute derived enveloping algebras and factorization homology on parallelized simply connected closed manifolds with coefficients in these Poisson $n$-algebras.
The goal of this memoir is to prove that the bar complex B(A) of an E-infinity algebra A is equipped with the structure of a Hopf E-infinity algebra, functorially in A. We observe in addition that such a structure is homotopically unique provided that we consider unital operads which come equipped with a distinguished 0-ary operation that represents the natural unit of the bar complex. Our constructions rely on a Reedy model category for unital Hopf operads. For our purpose we define a unital Hopf endomorphism operad which operates functorially on the bar complex and which is universal with th…
It is well known that the differential graded operad of A_infinity-algebras is a cofibrant replacement (a dg-resolution) of the operad of associative differential graded algebras without units. In this article we find a cofibrant replacement of the operad of associative differential graded algebras with units. Algebras over it are called homotopy unital A_infinity-algebras. We prove that the operad bimodule of A_infinity-morphisms is a cofibrant replacement of the operad bimodule of morphisms of dg-algebras without units. Similarly we show that the operad bimodule of homotopy unital A_infinity…
We show that every action operad gives rise to a notion of monoidal category via the categorical version of the Borel construction, embedding action operads into the category of 2-monads on $\mathbf{Cat}$. We characterize those 2-monads in the image of this embedding, and as an example show that the theory of coboundary categories corresponds precisely to the operad of $n$-fruit cactus groups. We finally define $\mathbfΛ$-multicategories for an action operad $\mathbfΛ$, and show that they arise as monads in a Kleisli bicategory.
Given an operad A of topological spaces, we consider A-monads in a topological category C . When A is an A-infinity-operad, any A-monad K : C -> C can be thought of as a monad up to coherent homotopies. We define the completion functor with respect to an A-infinity-monad and prove that it is an A-infinity-monad itself.
I exhibit a pair of non-symmetric operads that, although not themselves isomorphic, induce isomorphic monads. The existence of such a pair implies that if `algebraic theory' is understood as meaning `monad', operads cannot be regarded as algebraic theories of a special kind.
We study an analogue of the notion of p-restricted Lie-algebra and of the notion of divided power algebra for PreLie-algebras. We deduce our definitions from the general theory of operads. We consider two variants Λ(P,-) and Γ(P,-) of the monad S(P,-) which governs the category of algebras classically associated to an operad P. For the operad of PreLie-algebras P=PreLie, we prove that the category of algebras over the monad Λ(PreLie,-) is identified with an already defined category of p-restricted PreLie-algebras introduced by A. Dzhumadil'daev. We give an explicit description of the structure…
We present some tools for providing situations where the generalised Rota formula of arXiv:1801.07504 applies. As an example of this, we compute the Möbius function of the incidence algebra of any directed restriction species, free operad, or more generally free monad on a finitary polynomial monad.
A moment category is endowed with a distinguished set of split idempotents, called moments, which can be transported along morphisms. Equivalently, a moment category is a category with an active/inert factorisation system fulfilling two simple axioms. These axioms imply that the moments of a fixed object form a monoid, actually a left regular band. Each locally finite unital moment category defines a specific type of operad which records the combinatorics of partitioning moments into elementary ones. In this way the notions of symmetric, non-symmetric and $n$-operad correspond to unital moment…
We study the existence and left properness of transferred model structures for "monoid-like" objects in monoidal model categories. These include genuine monoids, but also all kinds of operads as for instance symmetric, cyclic, modular, higher operads, properads and PROP's. All these structures can be realised as algebras over polynomial monads. We give a general condition for a polynomial monad which ensures the existence and (relative) left properness of a transferred model structure for its algebras. This condition is of a combinatorial nature and singles out a special class of polynomial mo…
We construct a topological cellular operad such that the algebras over its cellular chains are the homotopy unital A-infinity algebras of Fukaya-Oh-Ohta-Ono.
We show that the canonical map from the associative operad to the unital associative operad is a homotopy epimorphism for a wide class of symmetric monoidal model categories. As a consequence, the space of unital associative algebra structures on a given object is up to homotopy a subset of connected components of the space of non-unital associative algebra structures.
Inspired by recent work of Batanin and Berger on the homotopy theory of operads, a general monad-theoretic context for speaking about structures within structures is presented, and the problem of constructing the universal ambient structure containing the prescribed internal structure is studied. Following the work of Lack, these universal objects must be constructed from simplicial objects arising from our monad-theoretic framework, as certain 2-categorical colimits called codescent objects. We isolate the extra structure present on these simplicial objects which enable their codescent object…
We show that a profinite completion functor for (simplicial or topological) operads with good homotopical properties can be constructed as a left Quillen functor from an appropriate model category of infinity-operads to a certain model category of profinite infinity-operads. The construction is based on a notion of lean infinity-operad, and we characterize those infinity-operads weakly equivalent to lean ones in terms of homotopical finiteness properties. Several variants of the construction are also discussed, such as the cases of unital (or closed) infinity-operads and of infinity-categories…
In this paper we study spaces of algebras over an operad (non-symmetric) in symmetric monoidal model categories. We first compute the homotopy fiber of the forgetful functor sending an algebra to its underlying object, extending a result of Rezk. We then apply this computation to the construction of geometric moduli stacks of algebras over an operad in a homotopical algebraic geometry context in the sense of Toën and Vezzosi. We show under mild hypotheses that the moduli stack of unital associative algebras is a Zariski open substack of the moduli stack of non-necessarily unital associative al…
In this paper we develop the theory of operads, algebras and modules in cofibrantly generated symmetric monoidal model categories. We give J-semi model strucures, which are a slightly weaker version of model structures, for operads and algebras and model structures for modules. In a second part we develop the thoery of S-modules of [EKMM]., which allows a general homotopy theory for commutative algebras and pseudo unital symmetric monoidal categories of modules over them. Finally we prove a base change and projection formula.
We prove, under mild assumptions, that a Quillen equivalence between symmetric monoidal model categories gives rise to a Quillen equivalence between their model categories of (non-symmetric) operads, and also between model categories of algebras over operads. We also show left properness results on model categories of operads and algebras over operads. As an application, we prove homotopy invariance for (unital) associative operads.
We show that the regular patterns of Getzler (2009) form a 2-category biequivalent to the 2-category of substitudes of Day and Street (2003), and that the Feynman categories of Kaufmann and Ward (2013) form a 2-category biequivalent to the 2-category of coloured operads (with invertible 2-cells). These biequivalences induce equivalences between the corresponding categories of algebras. There are three main ingredients in establishing these biequivalences. The first is a strictification theorem (exploiting Power's General Coherence Result) which allows to reduce to the case where the structure …
The goal of the present paper is to compare, in a precise way, two notions of operads up to homotopy which appear in the literature. Namely, we construct a functor from the category of strict unital homotopy colored operads to the category of infinity-operads. The former notion, that we make precise, is the operadic generalization of the notion of A-infinity-categories and the latter notion was defined by Moerdijk--Weiss in order to generalize the simplicial notion of infinity-category of Joyal--Lurie. This functor extends in two directions the simplicial nerve of Faonte--Lurie for A-infinity-…
We give an operadic definition of a genuine symmetric monoidal G-category, and we prove that its classifying space is a genuine E_\infty G-space. We do this by developing some very general categorical coherence theory. We combine results of Corner and Gurski, Power, and Lack, to develop a strictification theory for pseudoalgebras over operads and monads. It specializes to strictify genuine symmetric monoidal G-categories to genuine permutative G-categories. All of our work takes place in a general internal categorical framework that has many quite different specializations. When G is a finite …
We study a special type of $E_\infty$-operads that govern strictly unital $E_\infty$-coalgebras (and algebras) over the ring of integers. Morphisms of coalgebras over such an operad are defined by using universal $E_\infty$-bimodules. Thus we obtain a category of $E_\infty$-coalgebras. It turns out that if the homology of an $E_\infty$-coalgebra have no torsion, then there is a natural way to define an $E_\infty$-coalgebra structure on the homology so that the resulting coalgebra be isomorphic to the initial $E_\infty$-coalgebra in our category. We also discuss some invariants of the $E_\infty…
In this article we extend the theory of lax monoidal structures, also known as multitensors, and the monads on categories of enriched graphs that they give rise to. Our first principal result -- the lifting theorem for multitensors -- enables us to see the Gray tensor product of 2-categories and the Crans tensor product of Gray categories as part of this framework. We define weak n-categories with strict units by means of a notion of reduced higher operad, using the theory of algebraic weak factorisation systems. Our second principal result is to establish a lax tensor product on the category …
We prove, as claimed by A.Carboni and P.T.Johnstone, that the category of non-unital polygraphs, i.e. polygraphs where the source and target of each generator are not identity arrows, is a presheaf category. More generally we develop a new criterion for proving that certain classes of polygraphs are presheaf categories. This criterion also applies to the larger class of polygraphs where only the source of each generator is not an identity, and to the class of "many-to-one polygraphs", producing a new, more direct, proof that this is a presheaf category. The criterion itself seems to be extenda…
Let $\mathscr{M}$ be a monoidal model category that is also combinatorial and left proper. If $\mathscr{O}$ is a monad, operad, properad, or a PROP; following Segal's ideas we develop a theory of Quillen-Segal $\mathscr{O}$-algebras and show that we have a Quillen equivalence between usual $\mathscr{O}$-algebras and Quillen-Segal algebras. We use this theory to get the stable homotopy category by a similar method as Hovey.
