The goal of this memoir is to prove that the bar complex B(A) of an E-infinity algebra A is equipped with the structure of a Hopf E-infinity algebra, functorially in A. We observe in addition that such a structure is homotopically unique provided that we consider unital operads which come equipped with a distinguished 0-ary operation that represents the natural unit of the bar complex. Our constructions rely on a Reedy model category for unital Hopf operads. For our purpose we define a unital Hopf endomorphism operad which operates functorially on the bar complex and which is universal with this property. Then we deduce our structure results from operadic lifting properties. To conclude this memoir we hint how to make our constructions effective and explicit.
We prove that the bar construction of an $E_\infty$ algebra forms an $E_\infty$ algebra. To be more precise, we provide the bar construction of an algebra over the surjection operad with the structure of a Hopf algebra over the Barratt-Eccles operad. (The surjection operad and the Barratt-Eccles operad are classical $E_\infty$ operads.)
We define a simplicial enrichment on the category of differential graded Hopf cooperads (the category of dg Hopf cooperads for short). We prove that our simplicial enrichment satisfies, in part, the axioms of a simplicial model category structure on the category of dg Hopf cooperads. We use this simplicial model structure to define a model of mapping spaces in the category of dg Hopf cooperads and to upgrade results of the literature about the homotopy automorphism spaces of dg Hopf cooperads by dealing with simplicial monoid structures. The rational homotopy theory of operads implies that the…
The operads of Poisson and Gerstenhaber algebras are generated by a single binary element if we consider them as Hopf operads (i.e. as operads in the category of cocommutative coalgebras). In this note we discuss in details the Hopf operads generated by a single element of arbitrary arity. We explain why the dual space to the space of $n$-ary operations in this operads are quadratic and Koszul algebras. We give the detailed description of generators, relations and a certain monomial basis in these algebras.
The transfer of the generating operations of an algebra to a homotopy equivalent chain complex produces higher operations. The first goal of this paper is to describe precisely the higher structure obtained when the unary operations commute with the contracting homotopy. To solve this problem, we develop the Koszul duality theory of operads in the category of modules over a cocommutative Hopf algebra. This gives rise to a simpler category of homotopy algebras and infinity-morphisms, which allows us to get a new description of the homotopy category of algebras over such operads. The main exampl…
The classical Hopf invariant is an invariant of homotopy classes of maps from $S^{4n-1} $ to $S^{2n}$, and is an important invariant in homotopy theory. The goal of this paper is to use the Koszul duality theory for $E_n$-operads to define a generalization of the classical Hopf invariant. One way of defining the classical Hopf invariant is by defining a pairing between the cohomology of the associative bar construction on the cochains of a space $X$ and the homotopy groups of $X$. In this paper we will give a generalization of the classical Hopf invariant by defining a pairing between the coho…
We prove that the category of algebras over a cofibrant operad admits a closed model category structure. This leads to the notion of "virtual operad algebra" - the algebra over a cofibrant resolution of the given operad. In particular, virtual commutative algebras can serve to an algebraic description of homotopy p-tipes as in the recent preprint of Mandell (electronic Hopf topology archive, october '98, see http://www.hopf.math.purdue.edu. Our main result allows one to significally simplify the proof of Mandell's theorem.
We establish that $E_n$-operads satisfy a rational intrinsic formality theorem for $n\geq 3$. We gain our results in the category of Hopf cooperads in cochain graded dg-modules which defines a model for the rational homotopy of operads in spaces. We consider, in this context, the dual cooperad of the $n$-Poisson operad $\mathsf{Pois}_n^c$, which represents the cohomology of the operad of little $n$-discs $\mathsf{D}_n$. We assume $n\geq 3$. We explicitly prove that a Hopf cooperad in cochain graded dg-modules $\mathsf{K}$ is weakly-equivalent (quasi-isomorphic) to $\mathsf{Pois}_n^c$ as a Hopf…
The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, we review applications of the bar duality of operads to the construction of explicit cofibrant replacements in categories of algebras over an operad. In view toward applications, we check that the constructions of the bar duality work properly for algebras over operads in unbounded differential graded modules over a ring. In a second part, we use the operadic cobar construction to define explicit cyclinder objects in the category of operads. Then we apply this construction to prove that certain homotopy morphisms of algebras over operads are equival…
We describe a cooperad structure on the simplicial bar construction on a reduced operad of based spaces or spectra and, dually, an operad structure on the cobar construction on a cooperad. We also show that if the homology of the original operad (respectively, cooperad) is Koszul, then the homology of the bar (respectively, cobar) construction is the Koszul dual. We use our results to construct an operad structure on the partition poset models for the Goodwillie derivatives of the identity functor on based spaces and show that this induces the `Lie' operad structure on the homology groups of t…
We show that topological Quillen homology of algebras and modules over operads in symmetric spectra can be calculated by realizations of simplicial bar constructions. Working with several model category structures, we give a homotopical proof after showing that certain homotopy colimits in algebras and modules over operads can be easily understood. A key result here, which lies at the heart of this paper, is showing that the forgetful functor commutes with certain homotopy colimits. We also prove analogous results for algebras and modules over operads in unbounded chain complexes.
A classical E-infinity operad is formed by the bar construction of the symmetric groups. Such an operad has been introduced by M. Barratt and P. Eccles in the context of simplicial sets in order to have an analogue of the Milnor FK-construction for infinite loop spaces. The purpose of this article is to prove that the associative algebra structure on the normalized cochain complex of a simplicial set extends to the structure of an algebra over the Barratt-Eccles operad. We also prove that differential graded algebras over the Barratt-Eccles operad form a closed model category. Similar results …
Using a cell model for the little discs operad in terms of spineless cacti we give a minimal common topological operadic formalism for three a priori disparate algebraic structures: (1) a solution to Deligne's conjecture on the Hochschild complex, (2) the Hopf algebra of Connes and Kreimer, and (3) the string topology of Chas and Sullivan.
We consider partitions of a set with $r$ elements ordered by refinement. We consider the simplicial complex $\bar{K}(r)$ formed by chains of partitions which starts at the smallest element and ends at the largest element of the partition poset. A classical theorem asserts that $\bar{K}(r)$ is equivalent to a wedge of $r-1$-dimensional spheres. In addition, the poset of partitions is equipped with a natural action of the symmetric group in $r$ letters. Consequently, the associated homology modules are representations of the symmetric groups. One observes that the $r-1$th homology modules of $\b…
We define a chain map of the form $\E(k)\otimes BA^{\otimes k}\longrightarrow BA$, where $\E$ is a combinatorial $E_\infty$-operad called the sequence operad, and $BA$ is the bar complex of an $\E$-algebra $A$. We see that Steenrod-type operations derived from the chain map are equal to the corresponding operations on the cohomology of the based loop space under an isomorphism.
We extend bar-cobar duality, defined for operads of chain complexes by Getzler and Jones, to operads of spectra in the sense of stable homotopy theory. Our main result is the existence of a Quillen equivalence between the category of reduced operads of spectra (with the projective model structure) and a new model for the homotopy theory of cooperads of spectra. The crucial construction is of a weak equivalence of operads between the Boardman-Vogt W-construction for an operad P, and the cobar-bar construction on P. This weak equivalence generalizes a theorem of Berger and Moerdijk that says the…
In a first part of this paper, we introduce a homology theory for infinity-operads and for dendroidal spaces which extends the usual homology of differential graded operads defined in terms of the bar construction, and we prove some of its basic properties. In a second part, we define general bar and cobar constructions. These constructions send infinity-operads to infinity-cooperads and vice versa, and define an adjoint bar-cobar (or "Koszul") duality. Somewhat surprisingly, this duality is shown to hold much more generally between arbitrary presheaves and copresheaves on the category of tree…
We prove an analogue of the Poincare'-Birkhoff-Witt theorem and of the Cartier-Milnor-Moore theorem for non-cocommutative Hopf algebras. The primitive part of a cofree Hopf algebra is a B-infini-algebra. We construct a universal enveloping functor U2 from B-infini-algebras to 2-associative algebras, i.e. algebras equipped with two associative operations. We show that any cofree Hopf algebra H is of the form U2(Prim H). We take advantage of the simple description of the free 2as-algebra in terms of planar trees to unravel the structure of the operad B-infini.
This paper shows that the semi-direct product construction for $G$-operads and the levelwise Borel construction for $G$-cooperads are intertwined by the topological operadic bar construction. En route we give a generalization of the bar construction of M. Ching from reduced to certain non-reduced topological operads.
We proved in a previous article that the bar complex of an E-infinity algebra inherits a natural E-infinity algebra structure. As a consequence, a well-defined iterated bar construction B^n(A) can be associated to any algebra over an E-infinity operad. In the case of a commutative algebra A, our iterated bar construction reduces to the standard iterated bar complex of A. The first purpose of this paper is to give a direct effective definition of the iterated bar complexes of E-infinity algebras. We use this effective definition to prove that the n-fold bar complex B^n(A) admits an extension to…
In this article, we show under what additional ingredients a comp (or opposite) module over an operad with multiplication can be given the structure of a cyclic k-module and how the underlying simplicial homology gives rise to a Batalin-Vilkovisky module over the cohomology of the operad. In particular, one obtains a generalised Lie derivative and a generalised (cyclic) cap product that obey a Cartan-Rinehart homotopy formula, and hence yield the structure of a noncommutative differential calculus in the sense of Nest, Tamarkin, Tsygan, and others. Examples include the calculi known for the Ho…
We show that the diagonal complex computing the Gerstenhaber-Schack cohomology of a bialgebra (that is, the cohomology theory governing bialgebra deformations) can be given the structure of an operad with multiplication if the bialgebra is a (not necessarily finite dimensional) Hopf algebra with invertible antipode; if the antipode is involutive, the operad is even cyclic. Therefore, the Gerstenhaber-Schack cohomology of any such Hopf algebra carries a Gerstenhaber resp. Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra structure; in particular, one obtains a cup product and a cyclic boundary B that generate the Ger…
The aim of this paper is to construct an $E_\infty$-operad inducing an $E_\infty$-coalgebra structure on chain complexes with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}$, which is an alternative description to the $E_\infty$-coalgebra by the Barrat-Eccles operad.
This paper shows that generalizations of operads equipped with their respective bar/cobar dualities are related by a six operations formalism analogous to that of classical contexts in algebraic geometry. As a consequence of our constructions, we prove intertwining theorems which govern derived Koszul duality of push-forwards and pull-backs.
If P is a dg-operad acting on a dg-algebra A via algebra homomorphisms, then P acts on the Hochschild complex of A. In the more general case when P is a dg-prop, we show that P still acts on the Hochschild complex, but only up to coherent homotopy. We moreover give a functorial dg-replacement of P that strictifies the action. As an application, we obtain an explicit strictification of the homotopy coherent commutative Hopf algebra structure on the Hochschild complex of a commutative Hopf algebra.
These are expanded lecture notes from lectures given at the Workshop on higher structures at MATRIX Melbourne. These notes give an introduction to Feynman categories and their applications. Feynman categories give a universal categorical way to encode operations and relations. This includes the aspects of operad--like theories such as PROPs, modular operads, twisted (modular) operads, properads, hyperoperads and their colored versions. There is more depth to the general theory as it applies as well to algebras over operads and an abundance of other related structures, such as crossed simplicia…
In this paper we give a new foundational, categorical formulation for operations and relations and objects parameterizing them. This generalizes and unifies the theory of operads and all their cousins including but not limited to PROPs, modular operads, twisted (modular) operads, properads, hyperoperads, their colored versions, as well as algebras over operads and an abundance of other related structures, such as crossed simplicial groups, the augmented simplicial category or FI--modules. The usefulness of this approach is that it allows us to handle all the classical as well as more esoteric …
The set of cochain multioperations defining Steenrod $\smile_i$-products in the bar construction is constructed in terms of surjection operad. This structure extends a Homotopy G-algebra structure which defines just the $\cup $ on the bar construction.
We construct, using finitely many generating cell and relations, props in the category of CW-complexes with the property that their associated operads are models for the $E_\infty$-operad. We use one of these to construct a cellular $E_\infty$-bialgebra structure on the interval and derive from it a natural cellular $E_\infty$-coalgebra structure on the geometric realization of a simplicial set which, passing to cellular chains, recovers up to signs the Barratt-Eccles and Surjection coalgebra structures introduced by Berger-Fresse and McClure-Smith. We use another prop, a quotient of the first…
We show under what conditions the complex computing general Ext-groups carries the structure of a cyclic operad such that Ext becomes a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra. This is achieved by transferring cyclic cohomology theories for the dual of a (left) Hopf algebroid to the complex in question, which asks for the notion of contramodules introduced along with comodules by Eilenberg-Moore half a century ago. Another crucial ingredient is an explicit formula for the inverse of the Hopf-Galois map on the dual, by which we illustrate recent categorical results and answer a long-standing open question. …
In an application of the notion of twisting structures introduced by Hess and Lack, we define twisted composition products of symmetric sequences of chain complexes that are degreewise projective and finitely generated. Let Q be a cooperad and let BP be the bar construction on the operad P. To each morphism of cooperads g from Q to BP is associated a P-co-ring, K(g), which generalizes the two-sided Koszul and bar constructions. When the co-unit from K(g) to P is a quasi-isomorphism, we show that the Kleisli category for K(g) is isomorphic to the category of P-algebras and of their morphisms up…
We set up a general framework for enriching a subcategory of the category of noncommutative sets over a category C using products of the objects of a non-Σoperad P in \C. By viewing the simplicial category as a subcategory of the category of noncommutative sets in two different ways, we obtain two generalizations of simplicial objects. For the operad given by the Stasheff associahedra we obtain a model for the 2-sided bar construction in the first case and the cyclic bar and cobar construction in the second case. Using either the associahedra or the cyclohedra in place of the geometric simplic…
