Let $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n+1}$ be the moduli space of genus zero stable curves with $(n+1)$-marked points. The collection $\overline{\mathcal{M}}=\{\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n+1}\}_{n\geq 2}$ forms an operad in the category of complex projective varieties; its homology $Hycom= H_*(\overline{\mathcal{M}})$ is called the Hypercommutative operad. In this paper we construct a chain model for the hypercommutative operad, i.e. an operad of chain complexes $C_*^{dual}(\overline{\mathcal{M}})$ which is weakly equivalent to the operad of singular chains $C_*(\overline{\mathcal{M}})$. We prove that $C_*^{dual}(\overline{\mathcal{M}})$ is the linear dual of the bar construction $B(grav)$, where $grav$ is a chain model of the gravity operad based on cacti without basepoint. This shows that the Gravity and Hypercommutative operad are Koszul dual also at the chain level, refining a previous result of Getzler. The construction is topological, since $C_*^{dual}(\overline{\mathcal{M}})(n)$ is the cellular complex associated to a regular CW-decomposition of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n+1}$.
We record a result concerning the Koszul dual of the arity filtration on an operad. This result is then used to give conditions under which, for a general operad, the Poincaré/Koszul duality arrow of Ayala-Francis is an equivalence. We discuss how the Poincaré/Koszul duality arrow for the little $n$-disks operad $\mathcal{E}_n$ relates to their work when combined with the self-Koszul duality of $\mathcal{E}_n$.
The aim of this article is to give a criterion, generalizing the criterion introduced by Priddy for algebras, to verify that an operad is Koszul. We define the notion of a Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt basis in the context of operads. Then we show that an operad having a Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt basis is Koszul. Besides, we obtain that the Koszul dual operad has also a Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt basis. We check that the classical examples of Koszul operads (commutative, associative, Lie) have a Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt basis.
This paper proves Koszul duality for coloured operads and uses it to introduce strongly homotopy operads as a suitable homotopy invariant version of operads. It shows that rational chains on configuration spaces of points in the plane form a strongly homotopy operad quasi isomorphic to the chains on the little disks operad.
The goal of this paper is to prove a Koszul duality result for E_n-operads in differential graded modules over a ring. The case of an E_1-operad, which is equivalent to the associative operad, is classical. For n>1, the homology of an E_n-operad is identified with the n-Gerstenhaber operad and forms another well known Koszul operad. Our main theorem asserts that an operadic cobar construction on the dual cooperad of an E_n-operad defines a cofibrant model of E_n. This cofibrant model gives a realization at the chain level of the minimal model of the n-Gerstenhaber operad arising from Koszul du…
We develop a curved Koszul duality theory for algebras presented by quadratic-linear-constant relations over unital versions of binary quadratic operads. As an application, we study Poisson $n$-algebras given by polynomial functions on a standard shifted symplectic space. We compute explicit resolutions of these algebras using curved Koszul duality. We use these resolutions to compute derived enveloping algebras and factorization homology on parallelized simply connected closed manifolds with coefficients in these Poisson $n$-algebras.
We show that the Koszul dual of an E_n-operad in spectra is O(n)-equivariantly equivalent to its n-fold desuspension. To this purpose we introduce a new O(n)-operad of Euclidean spaces R_n, the barycentric operad, that is fibred over simplexes and has homeomorphisms as structure maps; we also introduce its sub-operad of restricted little n-discs D_n, that is an E_n-operad. The duality is realized by an unstable explicit S-duality pairing (F_n)_+ \smash BD_n \to S_n, where B is the bar-cooperad construction, F_n is the Fulton-MacPherson E_n-operad, and the dualizing object S_n is an operad of s…
The transfer of the generating operations of an algebra to a homotopy equivalent chain complex produces higher operations. The first goal of this paper is to describe precisely the higher structure obtained when the unary operations commute with the contracting homotopy. To solve this problem, we develop the Koszul duality theory of operads in the category of modules over a cocommutative Hopf algebra. This gives rise to a simpler category of homotopy algebras and infinity-morphisms, which allows us to get a new description of the homotopy category of algebras over such operads. The main exampl…
We consider partitions of a set with $r$ elements ordered by refinement. We consider the simplicial complex $\bar{K}(r)$ formed by chains of partitions which starts at the smallest element and ends at the largest element of the partition poset. A classical theorem asserts that $\bar{K}(r)$ is equivalent to a wedge of $r-1$-dimensional spheres. In addition, the poset of partitions is equipped with a natural action of the symmetric group in $r$ letters. Consequently, the associated homology modules are representations of the symmetric groups. One observes that the $r-1$th homology modules of $\b…
In our earlier work we studied Koszulity of a family of operads depending on a natural number n and on the degree d of the generating operation. While we proved that, for n < 8, this operad is Koszul if and only if d is even, and while it follows from a work of Hoffbeck that it is Koszul for d even and arbitrary n, its (non)Koszulity for d odd and n > 7 remains an open problem. In this note, we describe some related numerical experiments, and formulate a conjecture suggested by the results of these computations.
In this article we give a conceptual definition of Manin products in any category endowed with two coherent monoidal products. This construction can be applied to associative algebras, non-symmetric operads, operads, colored operads, and properads presented by generators and relations. These two products, called black and white, are dual to each other under Koszul duality functor. We study their properties and compute several examples of black and white products for operads. These products allow us to define natural operations on the chain complex defining cohomology theories. With these opera…
We prove that a connected commutator (or NC) complete associative algebra can be recovered in the derived setting from its abelianization together with its natural induced structure. Specifically, we prove an equivalence between connected derived commutator complete associative algebras and connected commutative algebras equipped with a coaction of the comonad arising from the adjunction between associative and commutative algebras. This provides a Koszul dual description of connected derived commutator (or NC) complete associative algebras and furthermore may be interpreted as a theory of rel…
The goal of this article is to make explicit a structured complex whose homology computes the cohomology of the p-profinite completion of the n-fold loop space of a sphere of dimension d=n-m<n. This complex is defined purely algebraically, in terms of characteristic structures of E_n-operads. Our construction involves: the free complete algebra in one variable associated to any E_n-operad; and an element in this free complete algebra, which is associated to a morphism from the operad of L-infinity algebras to an operadic suspension of our E_n-operad. We deduce our main theorem from: a connecti…
We extend the Koszul duality theory of associative algebras to algebras over an operad. Recall that in the classical case, this Koszul duality theory relies on an important chain complex: the Koszul complex. We show that the cotangent complex, involved in the cohomology theory of algebras over an operad, generalizes the Koszul complex.
In this thesis, we generalize the Koszul duality for associative algebras and operads to PROPs. The operads are algebraic objects that represent the operations with multiple inputs but only one output acting on a certain type of algebras. A PROP models the operations with multiple inputs and multiple outputs acting on algebraic structures like bialgebras and Lie bialgebras. We also give a construction of the free monoid (for a monoidal product non-necessarily bilinear). We generalize the Poincare series of operads to PROPs and we prove a functional equation for Poincare series of Koszul PROPs.
We introduce the notion of homotopy inner products for any cyclic quadratic Koszul operad $\mathcal O$, generalizing the construction already known for the associative operad. This is done by defining a colored operad $\hat{\mathcal O}$, which describes modules over $\mathcal O$ with invariant inner products. We show that $\hat{\mathcal O}$ satisfies Koszulness and identify algebras over a resolution of $\hat{\mathcal O}$ in terms of derivations and module maps. An application to Poincaré duality on the chain level of a suitable topological space is given.

We define a poset of partitions associated to an operad. We prove that the operad is Koszul if and only if the poset is Cohen-Macaulay. In one hand, this characterisation allows us to compute the homology of the poset. This homology is given by the Koszul dual operad. On the other hand, we get new methods for proving that an operad is Koszul.
We present a study of quadratic operads for n-ary algebras and their dual for n odd. We will focus on the ternary case (i.e n=3). The aim is to underline the problem of computing the dual operad and the fact that this last is in general defined in the graded differential operad framework. We prove that the operad associated to 3-ary partially associative algebra is not Koszul. Recall that, if n is even, the operad of n-ary partially associative algebras is Koszul.
In this paper we study the homology of 2 versions of the swiss-cheese operad. We prove that the zeroth homology of these two versions are Koszul operads and relate this to strong homotopy Lebiniz pairs and OCHA, defined by Kajiura and Stasheff.
We show that Verdier duality for certain sheaves on the moduli spaces of graphs associated to Koszul operads corresponds to Koszul duality of operads. This in particular gives a conceptual explanation of the appearance of graph cohomology of both the commutative and Lie types in computations of the cohomology of the outer automorphism group of a free group. Another consequence is an explicit computation of dualizing sheaves on spaces of metric graphs, thus characterizing to which extent these spaces are different from oriented orbifolds. We also provide a relation between the cohomology of the…
We extend bar-cobar duality, defined for operads of chain complexes by Getzler and Jones, to operads of spectra in the sense of stable homotopy theory. Our main result is the existence of a Quillen equivalence between the category of reduced operads of spectra (with the projective model structure) and a new model for the homotopy theory of cooperads of spectra. The crucial construction is of a weak equivalence of operads between the Boardman-Vogt W-construction for an operad P, and the cobar-bar construction on P. This weak equivalence generalizes a theorem of Berger and Moerdijk that says the…
This paper deals with the homotopy theory of differential graded operads. We endow the Koszul dual category of curved conilpotent cooperads, where the notion of quasi-isomorphism barely makes sense, with a model category structure Quillen equivalent to that of operads. This allows us to describe the homotopy properties of differential graded operads in a simpler and richer way, using obstruction methods.
We show that the family of chain modules over the standard simplices can be equipped with an operad structure. Similarly, the family of cochain modules of the Stasheff polytopes can be equipped with an operad structure. We first show that these operads are Koszul dual to each other, and second that they are both Koszul operads. The algebras over the standard simplices operad, called associative trialgebras, are defined by 3 operations and 11 relations. The algebras over the Stasheff polytopes operad, called dendriform trialgebras, are defined by 3 operations and 7 relations.
In this paper, we construct a bar-cobar adjunction and a Koszul duality theory for protoperads, which are an operadic type notion encoding faithfully some categories of bialgebras with diagonal symmetries, like double Lie algebras (DLie). We give a criterion to show that a binary quadratic protoperad is Koszul and we apply it successfully to the protoperad DLie. As a corollary, we deduce that the properad DPois which encodes double Poisson algebras is Koszul. This allows us to describe the homotopy properties of double Poisson algebras which play a key role in non commutative geometry.
The notion of PROP models the operations with multiple inputs and multiple outputs, acting on some algebraic structures like the bialgebras or the Lie bialgebras. We prove a Koszul duality theory for PROPs generalizing the one for associative algebras and for operads.
We prove that the homology of the Swiss-cheese operad is a Koszul operad. As a consequence, we obtain that the spectral sequence associated to the stratification of the compactification of points on the upper half plane collapses at the second stage, proving a conjecture by A. Voronov. However, we prove that the operad obtained at the second stage differs from the homology of the Swiss-cheese operad.
The notion of prop models the operations with multiple inputs and multiple outpus, acting on some algebraic structures like the bialgebras or the Lie bialgebras. In this paper, we generalize the Koszul duality theory of associative algebras and operads to props.
We define a notion of Koszul dual of a monoid object in a monoidal biclosed model category. Our construction generalizes the classic Yoneda algebra $Ext_A(k,k)$. We apply this general construction to define the Koszul dual of a category enriched over spectra or chain complexes. This example relies on the classical observation that enriched categories are monoid objects in a category of enriched graphs. We observe that the category of enriched graphs is biclosed, meaning that it comes with both left and right internal hom objects. Given a category $R$ (which plays the role of the ground field $…
Minimal models of chain complexes associated with free torus actions on spaces have been extensively studied in the literature. In this paper, we discuss these constructions using the language of operads. The main goal of this paper is to define a new Koszul operad that has projections onto several of the operads used in these minimal model constructions.
We survey the topology which led to the original bar and cobar constructions, for both associative algebras and coalgebras and for Lie algebras and commutative coalgebras. These constructions are often viewed as part of the larger theory of Koszul duality of operads, so this survey is meant to offer an historical perspective on the most prominent cases of that theory. We also explain recent work which shows that Hopf/linking invariants for homotopy are at the heart of the duality between commutative algebras and Lie coalgebras.

The purpose of this paper is to study generalizations of Gamma-homology in the context of operads. Good homology theories are associated to operads under appropriate cofibrancy hypotheses, but this requirement is not satisfied by usual operads outside the characteristic zero context. In that case, the idea is to pick a cofibrant replacement Q of the given operad P. We can apply to P-algebras the homology theory associated to Q in order to define a suitable homology theory on the category of P-algebras. We make explicit a small complex to compute this homology when the operad P is binary and Ko…
In a first part of this paper, we introduce a homology theory for infinity-operads and for dendroidal spaces which extends the usual homology of differential graded operads defined in terms of the bar construction, and we prove some of its basic properties. In a second part, we define general bar and cobar constructions. These constructions send infinity-operads to infinity-cooperads and vice versa, and define an adjoint bar-cobar (or "Koszul") duality. Somewhat surprisingly, this duality is shown to hold much more generally between arbitrary presheaves and copresheaves on the category of tree…
This paper shows that the operad encoding modular operads is Koszul. Using this result we construct higher composition operations on (hairy) graph homology which characterize its rational homotopy type.
This paper provides an explicit cofibrant resolution of the operad encoding Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras. Thus it defines the notion of homotopy Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras with the required homotopy properties. To define this resolution we extend the theory of Koszul duality to operads and properads that are defind by quadratic and linear relations. The operad encoding Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras is shown to be Koszul in this sense. This allows us to prove a Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt Theorem for such an operad and to give an explicit small quasi-free resolution for it. This particular resolution …
We show that the family of standard simplices and the family of Stasheff polytopes are dual to each other in the following sense. The chain modules of the standard simplices, resp. the Stasheff polytopes, assemble to give an operad. We show that these operads are dual of each other in the operadic sense. The main result of this paper is to show that they are both Koszul operads. As a consequence the generating series of the standard simplices and the generating series of the Stasheff polytopes are inverse to each other. The two operads give rise to new types of algebras with 3 generating opera…
In this paper, I give a generalized analogue of the string topology results of Chas and Sullivan, and of Cohen and Jones. For a finite simplicial complex $X$ and $k \geq 1$, I construct a spectrum $Maps(S^k, X)^{S(X)}$, and show that the corresponding chain complex is naturally homotopy equivalent to an algebra over the $(k+1)$-dimensional unframed little disk operad $\mathcal{C}_{k+1}$. I also prove Kontsevich's conjecture that the Quillen cohomology of a based $\mathcal{C}_k$-algebra (in the category of chain complexes) is equivalent to a shift of its Hochschild cohomology, as well as prove …
