We define a notion of Koszul dual of a monoid object in a monoidal biclosed model category. Our construction generalizes the classic Yoneda algebra $Ext_A(k,k)$. We apply this general construction to define the Koszul dual of a category enriched over spectra or chain complexes. This example relies on the classical observation that enriched categories are monoid objects in a category of enriched graphs. We observe that the category of enriched graphs is biclosed, meaning that it comes with both left and right internal hom objects. Given a category $R$ (which plays the role of the ground field $k$ in classical algebra), and an augmented $R$-algebra $C$, we define the Koszul dual of $C$, denoted $K(C)$, as the $R$-algebra of derived endomorphisms of $R$ in the category of right $C$-modules.
We establish the expected adjunctions between the categories of modules over $C$ and modules over $K(C)$. We investigate the question of when the map from $C$ to its double dual $K(K(C))$ is an equivalence. We also show that Koszul duality of operads can be understood as a special case of Koszul duality of categories. In this way we incorporate Koszul duality of operads in a wider context, and possibly clarify some aspects of it.
This is a report on recent work of Chalupnik and Touze. We explain the Koszul duality for the category of strict polynomial functors and make explicit the underlying monoidal structure which seems to be of independent interest. Then we connect this to Ringel duality for Schur algebras and describe Serre duality for strict polynomial functors.
We show that there is an equivalence in any $n$-topos $\mathcal{X}$ between the pointed and $k$-connective objects of $\mathcal{X}$ and the $\mathbb{E}_k$-group objects of the $(n-k-1)$-truncation of $\mathcal{X}$. This recovers, up to equivalence of $\infty$-categories, some classical results regarding algebraic models for $k$-connective, $(n-1)$-coconnective homotopy types. Further, it extends those results to the case of sheaves of such homotopy types. We also show that for any pointed and $k$-connective object $X$ of $\mathcal{X}$ there is an equivalence between the $\infty$-category of mo…
I show that any locally Cartesian left localisation of a presentable infinity-category admits a right proper model structure in which all morphisms are cofibrations, and obtain a Koszul duality classification of its fibrations. By a simple criterion in terms of generators for a localisation to be locally Cartesian, this applies to any nullification functor. In particular, it includes examples with non-trivial "homotopical content." I further describe, and provide examples from, the set of fibrations in three contexts: the higher categorical Thomason model structure of Mazel-Gee, where fibratio…
For any dg algebra $A$ we construct a closed model category structure on dg $A$-modules such that the corresponding homotopy category is compactly generated by dg $A$-modules that are finitely generated and free over $A$ (disregarding the differential). We prove that this closed model category is Quillen equivalent to the category of comodules over a certain, possibly nonconilpotent dg coalgebra, a so-called extended bar construction of $A$. This generalises and complements certain aspects of dg Koszul duality for associative algebras.
Koszul algebras have arisen in many contexts; algebraic geometry, combinatorics, Lie algebras, non-commutative geometry and topology. The aim of this paper and several sequel papers is to show that for any finite dimensional algebra there is always a naturally associated Koszul theory. To obtain this, the notions of Koszul algebras, linear modules and Koszul duality are extended to additive (graded) categories over a field. The main focus of this paper is to provide these generalizations and the necessary preliminaries.
We prove that a connected commutator (or NC) complete associative algebra can be recovered in the derived setting from its abelianization together with its natural induced structure. Specifically, we prove an equivalence between connected derived commutator complete associative algebras and connected commutative algebras equipped with a coaction of the comonad arising from the adjunction between associative and commutative algebras. This provides a Koszul dual description of connected derived commutator (or NC) complete associative algebras and furthermore may be interpreted as a theory of rel…
We define, for a somewhat standard forgetful functor from nonsymmetric operads to weight graded associative algebras, two functorial "enveloping operad" functors, the right inverse and the left adjoint of the forgetful functor. Those functors turn out to be related by operadic Koszul duality, and that relationship can be utilised to provide examples showing limitations of two standard tools of the Koszul duality theory. We also apply these functors to get a homotopical algebra proof of the Lagrange inversion formula.
In this paper we study a category of trees TI and prove that it is a Koszul category. Consequences are the interpretation of the reduced bar construction of operads of Ginzburg and Kapranov as the Koszul complex of this category, and the interpretation of operads up to homotopy as a functor from the minimal resolution of TI to the category of graded vector spaces. We compare also three different bar constructions of operads. Two of them have already been compared by Shnider-Von Osdol and Fresse.
A quadratic algebra is a homogeneous algebra generated by its elements of degree 1. Manin has endowed the category of quadratic algebras with two tensor products. These structures have been adapted to operads by Ginsburg and Kapranov. Berger has defined such tensor products for n-homogeneous algebras. The purpose of this paper is to define the notion of quadratic category, which is a category endowed with two tensor products. The Manin and Ginsburg-Kapranov constructions are examples of quadratic categories. We define also a Koszul complex, n-homogeneous operads and show how this notion can be…
Lower bounds for the dimension of a triangulated category are provided. These bounds are applied to stable derived categories of Artin algebras and of commutative complete intersection local rings. As a consequence, one obtains bounds for the representation dimensions of certain Artin algebras.
This book contains a detailed exposition of the nonhomogeneous Koszul duality theory in the relative situation over a noncentral, noncommutative, nonsemisimple base ring, as announced in Section 0.4 of arXiv:0708.3398. We prove the Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt theorem in this context and construct the triangulated equivalences of derived Koszul duality. The duality between the ring of differential operators and the de Rham DG-algebra, with the ring of functions as the base ring, is the thematic example. The moderate generality level makes the exposition in this book more accessible than the very hea…
This paper can be thought of as an extended introduction to arXiv:0708.3398; nevertheless, most of its results are not covered by loc. cit. We consider the derived categories of DG-modules, DG-comodules, and DG-contramodules, the coderived and contraderived categories of CDG-modules, the coderived categories of CDG-comodules, and the contraderived categories of CDG-contramodules. The equivalence between the latter two categories (the comodule-contramodule correspondence) is established. Nonhomogeneous Koszul duality or "triality" (an equivalence between exotic derived categories corresponding …
We generalize the theory of Koszul complexes and Koszul algebras (in particular, Koszul duality between symmetric and exterior algebras) to symmetric tensor categories. In characteristic $p\ge 5$, this theory exhibits peculiar effects, not observed in the classical theory. In particular, we show that the symmetric and exterior algebras of a non-invertible simple object in the Verlinde category ${\rm Ver}_p$ are almost Koszul (although not Koszul), and show how this gives examples of $(r,s)$-Koszul algebras with any $r,s\ge 2$. We also develop a theory of Lie algebras in symmetric tensor catego…
We consider the notions of the replicators, including the duplicator and triplicator, of a binary operad. As in the closely related notions of di-Var-algebra and tri-Var-algebra in [14], they provide a general operadic definition for the recent constructions of replicating the operations of algebraic structures. We show that taking replicators is in Koszul dual to taking successors in [3] for binary quadratic operads and is equivalent to taking the white product with certain operads such as Perm. We also relate the replicators to the actions of average operators.
