This paper proves Koszul duality for coloured operads and uses it to introduce strongly homotopy operads as a suitable homotopy invariant version of operads. It shows that rational chains on configuration spaces of points in the plane form a strongly homotopy operad quasi isomorphic to the chains on the little disks operad.
The transfer of the generating operations of an algebra to a homotopy equivalent chain complex produces higher operations. The first goal of this paper is to describe precisely the higher structure obtained when the unary operations commute with the contracting homotopy. To solve this problem, we develop the Koszul duality theory of operads in the category of modules over a cocommutative Hopf algebra. This gives rise to a simpler category of homotopy algebras and infinity-morphisms, which allows us to get a new description of the homotopy category of algebras over such operads. The main exampl…
In this work we provide a definition of a coloured operad as a monoid in some monoidal category, and develop the machinery of Gröbner bases for coloured operads. Among the examples for which we show the existance of a quadratic Gröbner basis we consider the seminal Lie-Rinehart operad whose algebras include pairs (functions, vector fields).
In this article we give a conceptual definition of Manin products in any category endowed with two coherent monoidal products. This construction can be applied to associative algebras, non-symmetric operads, operads, colored operads, and properads presented by generators and relations. These two products, called black and white, are dual to each other under Koszul duality functor. We study their properties and compute several examples of black and white products for operads. These products allow us to define natural operations on the chain complex defining cohomology theories. With these opera…
The goal of this article is to make explicit a structured complex whose homology computes the cohomology of the p-profinite completion of the n-fold loop space of a sphere of dimension d=n-m<n. This complex is defined purely algebraically, in terms of characteristic structures of E_n-operads. Our construction involves: the free complete algebra in one variable associated to any E_n-operad; and an element in this free complete algebra, which is associated to a morphism from the operad of L-infinity algebras to an operadic suspension of our E_n-operad. We deduce our main theorem from: a connecti…
In this thesis, we generalize the Koszul duality for associative algebras and operads to PROPs. The operads are algebraic objects that represent the operations with multiple inputs but only one output acting on a certain type of algebras. A PROP models the operations with multiple inputs and multiple outputs acting on algebraic structures like bialgebras and Lie bialgebras. We also give a construction of the free monoid (for a monoidal product non-necessarily bilinear). We generalize the Poincare series of operads to PROPs and we prove a functional equation for Poincare series of Koszul PROPs.
We prove that a connected commutator (or NC) complete associative algebra can be recovered in the derived setting from its abelianization together with its natural induced structure. Specifically, we prove an equivalence between connected derived commutator complete associative algebras and connected commutative algebras equipped with a coaction of the comonad arising from the adjunction between associative and commutative algebras. This provides a Koszul dual description of connected derived commutator (or NC) complete associative algebras and furthermore may be interpreted as a theory of rel…
The purpose of this paper is to prove the koszulity of the operad ${\mathcal Quad}$, governing quadri-algebras. That ${\mathcal Quad}$ is Koszul was conjectured by Aguiar and Loday. The operad ${\mathcal Dend}$, governing dendriform algebras, is known to be Koszul, by work of Loday, and ${\mathcal Quad}$ is its second black square power. We find a new complex, based on the associahedron, which captures the structure of ${\mathcal Dend}$. This complex behaves well with respect to the black squaring process, and allows us to conclude. Also, this proves koszulity of higher powers of ${\mathcal De…
We introduce a functor ${\sf As}$ from the category of posets to the category of nonsymmetric binary and quadratic operads, establishing a new connection between these two categories. Each operad obtained by the construction ${\sf As}$ provides a generalization of the associative operad because all of its generating operations are associative. This construction has a very singular property: the operads obtained from ${\sf As}$ are almost never basic. Besides, the properties of the obtained operads, such as Koszulity, basicity, associative elements, realization, and dimensions, depend on combin…
We consider the notions of the replicators, including the duplicator and triplicator, of a binary operad. As in the closely related notions of di-Var-algebra and tri-Var-algebra in [14], they provide a general operadic definition for the recent constructions of replicating the operations of algebraic structures. We show that taking replicators is in Koszul dual to taking successors in [3] for binary quadratic operads and is equivalent to taking the white product with certain operads such as Perm. We also relate the replicators to the actions of average operators.
In this paper we study the homology of 2 versions of the swiss-cheese operad. We prove that the zeroth homology of these two versions are Koszul operads and relate this to strong homotopy Lebiniz pairs and OCHA, defined by Kajiura and Stasheff.
We review several well-known operads of compactified configuration spaces and construct several new such operads, C, in the category of smooth manifolds with corners whose complexes of fundamental chains give us (i) the 2-coloured operad of A-infinity algebras and their homotopy morphisms, (ii) the 2-coloured operad of L-infinity algebras and their homotopy morphisms, and (iii) the 4-coloured operad of open-closed homotopy algebras and their homotopy morphisms. Two gadgets - a (coloured) operad of Feynman graphs and a de Rham field theory on C - are introduced and used to construct quantized r…
An operad structure on certain bicoloured noncrossing configurations in regular polygons is studied. Motivated by this study, a general functorial construction of enveloping operad, with input a coloured operad and output an operad, is presented. The operad of noncrossing configurations is shown to be the enveloping operad of a coloured operad of bubbles. Several suboperads are also investigated, and described by generators and relations.
The notion of PROP models the operations with multiple inputs and multiple outputs, acting on some algebraic structures like the bialgebras or the Lie bialgebras. We prove a Koszul duality theory for PROPs generalizing the one for associative algebras and for operads.
We prove that the homology of the Swiss-cheese operad is a Koszul operad. As a consequence, we obtain that the spectral sequence associated to the stratification of the compactification of points on the upper half plane collapses at the second stage, proving a conjecture by A. Voronov. However, we prove that the operad obtained at the second stage differs from the homology of the Swiss-cheese operad.
The notion of prop models the operations with multiple inputs and multiple outpus, acting on some algebraic structures like the bialgebras or the Lie bialgebras. In this paper, we generalize the Koszul duality theory of associative algebras and operads to props.
We show that the family of chain modules over the standard simplices can be equipped with an operad structure. Similarly, the family of cochain modules of the Stasheff polytopes can be equipped with an operad structure. We first show that these operads are Koszul dual to each other, and second that they are both Koszul operads. The algebras over the standard simplices operad, called associative trialgebras, are defined by 3 operations and 11 relations. The algebras over the Stasheff polytopes operad, called dendriform trialgebras, are defined by 3 operations and 7 relations.
We define the $m$th Veronese power of a weight graded operad $\mathcal{P}$ to be its suboperad $\mathcal{P}^{[m]}$ generated by operations of weight $m$. It turns out that, unlike Veronese powers of associative algebras, homological properties of operads are, in general, not improved by this construction. However, under some technical conditions, Veronese powers of quadratic Koszul operads are meaningful in the context of the Koszul duality theory. Indeed, we show that in many important cases the operads $\mathcal{P}^{[m]}$ are related by Koszul duality to operads describing strongly homotopy …
We introduce the notion of a dioperad to describe certain operations with multiple inputs and multiple outputs. The framework of Koszul duality for operads is generalized to dioperads. We show that the Lie bialgebra dioperad is Koszul.
Recently S. Merkulov established a new link between differential geometry and homological algebra by giving descriptions of several differential geometric structures in terms of algebraic operads and props. In particular he described Nijenhuis structures as corresponding to representations of the cobar construction on the Koszul dual of a certain quadratic operad. In this paper we prove, using the PBW-basis method of E. Hoffbeck, that the operad governing Nijenhuis structures is Koszul, thereby showing that Nijenhuis structures correspond to representations of the minimal resolution of this op…
We show that Verdier duality for certain sheaves on the moduli spaces of graphs associated to Koszul operads corresponds to Koszul duality of operads. This in particular gives a conceptual explanation of the appearance of graph cohomology of both the commutative and Lie types in computations of the cohomology of the outer automorphism group of a free group. Another consequence is an explicit computation of dualizing sheaves on spaces of metric graphs, thus characterizing to which extent these spaces are different from oriented orbifolds. We also provide a relation between the cohomology of the…
The purpose of this foundational paper is to introduce various notions and constructions in order to develop the homotopy theory for differential graded operads over any ring. The main new idea is to consider the action of the symmetric groups as part of the defining structure of an operad and not as the underlying category. We introduce a new dual category of higher cooperads, a new higher bar-cobar adjunction with the category of operads, and a new higher notion of homotopy operads, for which we establish the relevant homotopy properties. For instance, the higher bar-cobar construction provi…
This paper gives a systematic study of matching dialgebras corresponding to the operad $As^{(2)}$ in \cite{Zi} as the only Koszul self dual operad there other than the operads of associative algebras and Poisson algebras. The close relationship of matching dialgebras with semi-homomorphisms and matched pairs of associative algebras are established. By anti-symmetrizing, matching dialgerbas are also shown to give compatible Lie algebras, pre-Lie algebras and PostLie algebras. By the rewriting method, the operad of matching dialgebras is shown to be Koszul and the free objects are constructed in…
A new hierarchy of combinatorial operads is introduced, involving families of regular polygons with configurations of arcs, called decorated cliques. This hierarchy contains, among others, operads on noncrossing configurations, Motzkin objects, forests, dissections of polygons, and involutions. All this is a consequence of the definition of a general functorial construction from unitary magmas to operads. We study some of its main properties and show that this construction includes the operad of bicolored noncrossing configurations and the operads of simple and double multi-tildes. We focus in…
This paper shows that the operad encoding modular operads is Koszul. Using this result we construct higher composition operations on (hairy) graph homology which characterize its rational homotopy type.
We develop a theory of "arrowed" (operads and) dioperads, which are to exact triangles as dioperads are to vector spaces. A central example to this paper is the arrowed operad controlling "derived ideals" for any operad. The Koszul duality theory of arrowed dioperads interacts well with rotation of exact triangles, and in particular with "exact Stars of David," which are pairs of exact triangles drawn on top of each other in an interesting way. Using this framework, we give a cochain-level lift of the "relative Poincaré duality" enjoyed by oriented manifolds with boundary; moreover, our cochai…
This paper provides an explicit cofibrant resolution of the operad encoding Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras. Thus it defines the notion of homotopy Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras with the required homotopy properties. To define this resolution we extend the theory of Koszul duality to operads and properads that are defind by quadratic and linear relations. The operad encoding Batalin-Vilkovisky algebras is shown to be Koszul in this sense. This allows us to prove a Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt Theorem for such an operad and to give an explicit small quasi-free resolution for it. This particular resolution …
