Let $X$ be a smooth projective surface such that linear and numerical equivalence of divisors on $X$ coincide and let $σ\subseteq |D|$ be a linear pencil on $X$ with integral general fibers. A fiber of $σ$ will be called special if either it is not integral or it has non-generic multiplicity at some of the base points (including the infinitely near ones) of the pencil. In this note we provide an algorithm to compute the integral components of the special fibers of $σ$.
In the previous paper by Pereira and the author, it was proved that any pencil of plane curves of degree greater than one with irreducible generic fiber can have at most five completely reducible fibers although no examples with five such fibers were ever found. Recently Janis Stipins has proved that if any two fibers of a pencil intersect transversally then it cannot have five completely reducible fibers. In this paper we generalize the Stipins result to arbitrary pencils. We also include into consideration more general special fibers that are the unions of lines and non-reduced curves. These…
We complete the study of birational geometry of Fano fiber spaces $π\colon V\to {\mathbb P}^1$, the fiber of which is a Fano double hypersurface of index 1. For each family of these varieties we either prove birational rigidity or produce explicitly non-trivial structures of Fano fiber spaces. A new linear method of studying movable systems on Fano fiber spaces $V/{\mathbb P}^1$ is developed.
We prove birational superrigidity of generic Fano fiber spaces $V/{\mathbb P}^1$, the fibers of which are Fano complete intersections of index 1 and dimension $M$ in ${\mathbb P}^{M+k}$, provided that $M\geq 2k+1$. The proof combines the traditional quadratic techniques of the method of maximal singularities with the linear techniques based on the connectedness principle of Shokurov and Koll\' ar. Certain related results are also considered.
For every smooth quartic threefold, we classify all pencils on it whose general element is an irreducible surface birational to a smooth surface of Kodaira dimension zero.
It is proved that on a smooth algebraic variety, fibered into cubic surfaces over the projective line and sufficiently ``twisted'' over the base, there is only one pencil of rational surfaces -- that is, this very pencil of cubics. In particular, this variety is non-rational; moreover, it can not be fibered into rational curves. The proof is obtained by means of the method of maximal singularities.
Let $X$ be a smooth algebraic curve. Suppose that there exists a triple covering $f : X \to Y$ where $Y$ is a smooth algebraic curve. In this paper, we investigate the existence of morphisms from $X$ to the projective line $\mathbf{P}^1$ which do not factor through the covering $f$. For this purpose, we generalize the classical results of Maroni concerning base-point-free pencils on trigonal curves to the case of triple covers of arbitrary smooth irrational curves.
We give two examples of plane curve arrangements of pencil type which are very close to line arrangements, though the action of the monodromy operator on the first cohomology group of the Milnor Fiber has eigenvalues of order 5 and 6, showing that surprising situations can occur for larger classes of curve arrangements than for line arrangements. Our computations rely on the algorithm given by A. Dimca and G. Sticlaru which detects the non trivial monodromy eigenspaces of free curves.
We prove that a general Fano fibration $π\colon V\to {\mathbb P}^1$, the fiber of which is a double Fano hypersurface of index 1, is birationally superrigid provided it is sufficiently twisted over the base. In particular, on $V$ there are no other structures of a rationally connected fibration. The proof is based on the method of maximal singularities.
Let X be a smooth curve of genus g. When pi>=3g and d>=pi-2g+1 we show the existence of a double covering gamma:C-->X where C a smooth curve of genus pi with a base-point-free pencil of degree d which is not the pull-back of a pencil on X.
We prove a criterion of nonsingularity of a complete intersection of two fiberwise quadrics in a scroll over $P^1$. As a corollary we derive the following addition to the Alexeev theorem on rationality of standard Del Pezzo fibrations of degree 4 over $P^1$: we prove that any fibration of this kind with the topological Euler characteristic -4 is rational.
Let $(S,D)$ be a minimal log pair of general type with $S$ a smooth projective surface and $D$ a simple normal corssing reduced divisor on $S$. We assume that its log canonial linear system $|K_S+D|$ is composed of a penciel, let $f\colon S\to B$ be the fiberation induced by the linear system $|K_S+D|$ and $F$ be a general fiber of $f$. Let $b$ (resp. $g$) be the genus of the base curve $B$ (resp. general fiber $F$) and $k=D\cdot F$ the intersection number. We show that 1. If $k>0$ and $b\geq 2$ then $2\leq g+k \leq 3$, when $g+k=3$ we have $b=2$ and $h^1(S,K_S+D)=0$. 2. Suppose $p_a(D)\leq 2(…
We study completely reducible fibers of pencils of hypersurfaces on $\mathbb P^n$ and associated codimension one foliations of $\mathbb P^n$. Using methods from theory of foliations we obtain certain upper bounds for the number of these fibers as functions only of $n$. Equivalently this gives upper bounds for the dimensions of resonance varieties of hyperplane arrangements. We obtain similar bounds for the dimensions of the characteristic varieties of the arrangement complements.
Let S be a smooth, projective surface of Picard rank 1 and very ample generator embedding S into P^n. Let C be a smooth curve in O(m) for m \geq 5. We prove that any base-point free, complete g^r_d on C for r\in\{1,2\} and d small enough is cut out by a hyperplane section restricted to a multisecant (n-r-1)-plane.
We present two results about the relationship between fundamental groups of quasiprojective manifolds and linear systems on a projectivization. We prove the existence of a plane curve with non-abelian fundamental group of the complement which does not admit a mapping onto an orbifold with non-abelian fundamental group. We also find an affine manifold whose irreducible components of its characteristic varieties do not come from the pull-back of the characteristic varieties of an orbifold.
We construct some infinite series of free and nearly free curves using pencils of conics with a base locus of cardinality at most two. These curves have an interesting topology, e.g. a high degree Alexander polynomial that can be explicitly determined, a Milnor fiber homotopy equivalent to a bouquet of circles, or an irreducible translated component in the characteristic variety of their complement. Monodromy eigenspaces in the first cohomology group of the corresponding Milnor fibers are also described in terms of explicit differential forms.
Let $C$ be a smooth curve with gonality $k\ge 6$ and genus $g\ge 2k^2+5k-6$. We prove that $W^1_d({C})$ has the expected dimension and that the general element of any irreducible component of $W^1_d({C})$ is primitive if either $g-k+4\le d\le g-2$ or $d=g-k+3$ and either $k$ is odd or $C$ is not a double covering of a curve of gonality $k/2$ and genus $k-3$. Even in the latter case we prove the existence of a complete and primitive $g^1_{g-k+3}$.
Consider a one-parameter family of smooth, irreducible, projective curves of genus $g\ge 2$ defined over a number field. Each fiber contains at most finitely many rational points by the Mordell Conjecture, a theorem of Faltings. We show that the number of rational points is bounded only in terms of the family and the Mordell--Weil rank of the fiber's Jacobian. Our proof uses Vojta's approach to the Mordell Conjecture furnished with a height inequality due to the second- and third-named authors. In addition we obtain uniform bounds for the number of torsion in the Jacobian that lie each fiber o…
The paper studies a relation between fundamental group of the complement to a plane singular curve and the orbifold pencils containing it. The main tool is the use of Albanese varieties of cyclic covers ramified along such curves. Our results give sufficient conditions for a plane singular curve to belong to an orbifold pencil, i.e. a pencil of plane curves with multiple fibers inducing a map onto an orbifold curve whose orbifold fundamental group is non trivial. We construct an example of a cyclic cover of the projective plane which is an abelian surface isomorphic to the Jacobian of a curve …
We show that a line arrangement in the complex projective plane supports a nontrivial resonance variety if and only if it is the underlying arrangement of a "multinet," a multi-arrangement with a partition into three or more equinumerous classes which have equal multiplicities at each inter-class intersection point, and satisfy a connectivity condition. We also prove that this combinatorial structure is equivalent to the existence of a pencil of plane curves, also satisfying a connectivity condition, whose singular fibers include at least three products of lines, which comprise the arrangement…
We use vector-bundle techniques in order to compute $\dim W^1_d(C)$ where $C$ is general and smooth in a linear system on an unnodal Enriques surface. We furthermore find new examples of smooth curves on Enriques surfaces with an infinite number of $g^1_{\gon(C)}$'s.
We study the birational rigidity problem for smooth Mori fibrations on del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1 and 2. For degree 1 we obtain a complete description of rigid and non-rigid cases.
Green's conjecture is proved for smooth curves C lying on a rational surface S with an anticanonical pencil, under some mild hypotheses on the line bundle L defined by C. Constancy of Clifford dimension, Clifford index and gonality of curves in the linear system |L| is also obtained.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective K3 surface over complex numbers and $C$ be an ample curve on $X$. In this paper we will study the semistability of the Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundle $E_{C, A}$ associated to a line bundle $A$ ion $C$ such that $|A|$ is a pencil on $C$ and computes the Clifford index of $C$. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for $E_{C, A}$ being semistable.
Let $S$ be a smooth projective complex algebraic surface and $f\, :\, S\, \longrightarrow\, {\mathbb C}{\mathbb P}^2$ a finite map. Consider a pencil of hyperplane sections on ${\mathbb C}{\mathbb P}^2$ and pull it back to $S$. We address the question whether such a pencil is a Lefschetz pencil on $S$.
We consider the problem of deciding if a group is the fundamental group of a smooth connected complex quasi-projective (or projective) variety using Alexander-based invariants. In particular, we solve the problem for large families of Artin-Tits groups. We also study finiteness properties of such groups and exhibit examples of hyperplane complements whose fundamental groups satisfy $\text{F}_{k-1}$ but not $\text{F}_k$ for any $k$.
The sextic plane curves that are invariant under the standard action of the icosahedral group on the projective plane make up a pencil of genus ten curves (spanned by a sum of six lines and a three times a conic). This pencil was first considered in a note by R.~M.~Winger in 1925 and is nowadays named after him. We gave this a modern treatment and proved among other things that it contains essentially every smooth genus ten curve with icosahedral symmetry. We here consider the monodromy group and the period map naturally defined by the icosahedral symmetry. We showed that this monodromy group …
A K3-surface is a (smooth) surface which is simply connected and has trivial canonical bundle. In these notes we investigate three particular pencils of K3-surfaces with maximal Picard number. More precisely the general member in each pencil has Picard number 19 and each pencil contains four surfaces with Picard number 20. These surfaces are obtained as the minimal resolution of quotients X/G, where $G\subset SO(4,\R)$ is some finite subgroup and $X\subset ¶_3(\C)$ denotes a G-invariant surface. The singularities of X/G come from fix points of G on X or from singularities of X. In any case the…
We investigate the moduli of genus 10 curves that are endowed with a faithful action of the icosahedral group $\mathcal{A}_5$. We show among other things that this has the structure of a Deligne-Mumford stack whose underlying coarse moduli space essentially consists of two copies of the pencil of plane sextics that was introduced by Winger in 1924, but with the unique unstable member (a triple conic) replaced by a smooth non-planar curve. The orbifold defined by any member has genus zero and comes with 4 orbifold points. We show that by numbering the points, we get a fine moduli space whose ba…
Let $f\colon X\to B$ be a semistable fibration where $X$ is a smooth variety of dimension $n\geq 2$ and $B$ is a smooth curve. We give the structure theorem for the local system of the relative $1$-forms and of the relative top forms. This gives a neat interpretation of the second Fujita decomposition of $f_*ω_{X/B}$. We apply our interpretation to show the existence, up to base change, of higher irrational pencils and on the finiteness of the associated monodromy representations under natural Castelnuovo-type hypothesis on local subsystems. Finally we give a criterion to have that $X$ is not …
Let X be a smooth projective variety defined over an algebraically closed field, and let Y in X be a reduced and irreducible ample divisor in X. We give a numerical sufficient condition for a base point free pencil on $Y$ to be the restriction of a base point free pencil on $X$. This result is then extended to families of pencils and to morphisms to arbitrary smooth curves. Serrano had already studied this problem in the case n=2 and 3, and Reider had then attacked it in the case $n=2$ using vector bundle methods based on Bogomolov's instability theorem on a surface (char(k)=0). The argument g…
A separating ($M-2$)-curve is a smooth geometrically irreducible real projective curve $X$ such that $X(\mathbb{R})$ has $g-1$ connected components and $X(\mathbb{C})\setminus X(\mathbb{R})$ is disconnected. Let $T_g$ be a Teichmüller space of separating ($M-2$)-curves of genus $g$. We consider two partitions of $T_g$, one by means of a concept of special type, the other one by means of the separating gonality. We show that those two partitions are very closely related to each other. As an application we obtain the existence of real curves having isolated real linear systems $g^1_{g-1}$ for al…
We study smoothing of pencils of curves on surfaces with normal crossings. As a consequence we show that the canonical divisor of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ is not pseudo-effective in some range, implying that $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{12,6},\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{12,7},\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{13,4}$ and $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{14,3}$ are uniruled. We provide upper bounds for the Kodaira dimension of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{12,8}$ and $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{16}$. We also show that the moduli of $(4g+5)$-pointed hyperelliptic curves $\mathcal{H}_{g,4g+5}$ is uniruled. Together with a re…
Suppose X is a smooth projective 3-fold of general type and |mK_X| is composed of a pencil of surfaces with m>1. This pencil naturally induces a fibration f:X->C onto a smooth curve C after the Stein-factorization, which is the main objects of this article. Based on Koll'ar's earlier works, we improve on it and try to understand the family in terms of discrete birational invariants of the total space as well as those of the general fiber and the base curve. The aim of this note is to build a little bit basic facts.
A plane curve on a the projective space over a field of characteristic zero is free if its associated sheaf T of tangent vector fields tangent is a free module. Relatively few free curves are known. Here we prove that a divisor consisting of a union of curves of a pencil of plane projective curves with the same degree and with a smooth base locus is a free divisor if and only this union contains all the singular members of the pencil and its Jacobian ideal is locally a complete intersection.
Let X be a smooth genus g curve equipped with a simple morphism f: X -> C, where C is either the projective line or more generally any smooth curve whose gonality is computed by finitely many pencils. Here we apply a method developed by Aprodu to prove that if g is big enough then X satisfies both Green and Green-Lazarsfeld conjectures. We also partially address the case in which the gonality of C is computed by infinitely many pencils.
We give a general structure theorem for affine A 1-fibrations on smooth quasi-projective surfaces. As an application, we show that every smooth A 1-fibered affine surface non-isomorphic to the total space of a line bundle over a smooth affine curve fails the Zariski Cancellation Problem. The present note is an expanded version of a talk given at the Kinosaki Algebraic Geometry Symposium in October 2019.
I construct some smooth Calabi-Yau threefolds in characteristic two and three that do not lift to characteristic zero. These threefolds are pencils of supersingular K3-surfaces. The construction depends on Moret-Bailly's pencil of abelian surfaces and Katsura's analysis of generalized Kummer surfaces. The threefold in characteristic two turns out to be nonrigid.
Let $C$ be an algebraic curve defined by a sufficiently generic bivariate Laurent polynomial with given Newton polygon $Δ$. It is classical that the geometric genus of $C$ equals the number of lattice points in the interior of $Δ$. In this paper we give similar combinatorial interpretations for the gonality, the Clifford index and the Clifford dimension, by removing a technical assumption from a recent result of Kawaguchi. More generally, the method shows that apart from certain well-understood exceptions, every base-point free pencil whose degree equals or slightly exceeds the gonality is 'co…
Let $S$ be a K3 surface, $C$ a smooth curve on $S$ with $\mathcal{O}_S(C)$ ample, and $A$ a base-point free $g^2_d$ on $C$ of small degree. We use Lazarsfeld--Mukai bundles to prove that $A$ is cut out by the global sections of a rank 1 torsion-free sheaf $\mathcal{G}$ on $S$. Furthermore, we show that $c_1(\mathcal{G})$ with one exception is adapted to $\mathcal{O}_S(C)$ and satisfies $\mathrm{Cliff}(c_1(\mathcal{G})_{|C})\leq\mathrm{Cliff}(A)$, thereby confirming a conjecture posed by Donagi and Morrison. We also show that the same methods can be used to give a simple proof of the conjecture…
Inside the projectivized $k$-th Hodge bundle, we construct a collection of divisors obtained by imposing vanishing at a Brill-Noether special point. We compute the classes of the closures of such divisors in two ways, using incidence geometry and restrictions to various families, including pencils of curves on K3 surfaces and pencils of Du Val curves. We also show the extremality and rigidity of the closure of the incidence divisor consisting of smooth pointed curves together with a canonical or 2-canonical divisor passing through the marked point.
The present paper describes a relation between the quotient of the fundamental group of a smooth quasi-projective variety by its second commutator and the existence of maps to orbifold curves. It extends previously studied cases when the target was a smooth curve. In the case when the quasi-projective variety is a complement to a plane algebraic curve this provides new relations between the fundamental group, the equation of the curve, and the existence of polynomial solutions to certain equations generalizing Pell's equation. These relations are formulated in terms of the depth which is an in…
We limit the singularities that arise in geometric generic fibers of morphisms between smooth varieties of positive characteristic by studying changes in embedding dimension under inseparable field extensions. We then use this result in the context of the minimal model program to rule out the existence of smooth varieties fibered by certain non-normal del Pezzo surfaces over bases of small dimension.
In this paper, we prove that given a flat generically smooth morphism between smooth projective varieties with $F$-pure closed fibers, if the source space is Fano, weak Fano or a variety with the nef anti-canonical divisor, then so is the target space. We also show that relative anti-canonical divisors of generically smooth surjective nonconstant morphisms are not nef and big in arbitrary characteristic.

We conjecture that the number of components of the fiber over infinity of Landau--Ginzburg model for a smooth Fano variety $X$ equals the dimension of the anticanonical system of $X$. We verify this conjecture for log Calabi--Yau compactifications of toric Landau--Ginzburg models for smooth Fano threefolds, complete intersections, and some toric varieties.
