The purpose of the paper is twofold. First, we give a short proof using the Kontsevich integral for the fact that the restriction of an invariant of degree 2n to (n+1)-component Brunnian links can be expressed as a quadratic form on the Milnor mu-bar link-homotopy invariants of length n+1. Second, we describe the structure of the Brunnian part of the degree 2n-graded quotient of the Goussarov--Vassiliev filtration for (n+1)-component links.
In this paper, we construct two families of satellite constructions for Brunnian links, called the satellite sum and the satellite tie. An interesting fact is that by applying the satellite sum and the satellite tie constructions, we can build infinitely many new Brunnian links from any given Brunnian links. With the helps of the satellite sum and the satellite tie, we give a new decomposition theorem for Brunnian links. We prove that every Brunnian link determines a unique labelled "tree-arrow structure" such that each vertex of the tree represents a generalized Hopf link, a hyperbolic Brunni…
We give a classification of $n$-component links up to $C_n$-move. In order to prove this classification, we characterize Brunnian links, and have that a Brunnian link is ambient isotopic to a band sum of trivial link and Milnor's links.
We show some properties of a Seifert matrix of an $n$-component Brunnian link. In particular, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for a matrix to be a Seifert matrix of a 2-component Brunnian link up to S-equivalence.
In this article, it is proved that the eigenvalue variety of the exterior of a nontrivial, non-Hopf, Brunnian link in $\mathbb{S}^{3}$ contains a nontrivial component of maximal dimension. This generalises, for Brunnian links, the nontriviality of the $A$-polynomial of a nontrivial knot in $\mathbb{S}^{3}$.
Brunnian links have been known for a long time in knot theory, whereas the idea of n-triviality is a recent innovation. We illustrate the relationship between the two concepts with four short theorems.
We consider surgery moves along (n+1)-component Brunnian links in compact connected oriented 3-manifolds, where the framing of the each component is 1/k for k in Z. We show that no finite type invariant of degree < 2n-2 can detect such a surgery move. The case of two link-homotopic Brunnian links is also considered. We relate finite type invariants of integral homology spheres obtained by such operations to Goussarov-Vassiliev invariants of Brunnian links.
This paper proves that convex Brunnian links exist for every dimension $n \geq 3$ by constructing explicit examples. These examples are three-component links which are higher-dimensional generalizations of the Borromean rings.
A link L in the 3-sphere is called Brunnian if every proper sublink of L is trivial. In a previous paper, the first author proved that the restriction to Brunnian links of any Goussarov-Vassiliev finite type invariant of (n+1)-component links of degree<2n is trivial. The purpose of this paper is to study the first nontrivial case. We will show that the restriction of an invariant of degree 2n to (n+1)-component Brunnian links can be expressed as a quadratic form on the Milnor link-homotopy invariants of length n+1.
Let $M_λ$ be the $λ$-component Milnor link. For $λ\ge 3$, we determine completely when a finite slope surgery along $M_λ$ yields a lens space including $S^3$ and $S^1\times S^2$, where {\it finite slope surgery} implies that a surgery coefficient of every component is not $\infty$. For $λ=3$ (i.e.\ the Borromean rings), there are three infinite sequences of finite slope surgeries yielding lens spaces. For $λ\ge 4$, any finite slope surgery does not yield a lens space. As a corollary, $M_λ$ for $λ\ge 3$ does not yield both $S^3$ and $S^1\times S^2$ by any finite slope surgery. We generalize the…
We prove that if n\ge1, then an (n+1)-component Brunnian link L in a connected, oriented 3-manifold is C_n-equivalent to an unlink. We also prove that if n\ge2, then L can not be distinguished from an unlink by any Goussarov-Vassiliev finite type invariant of degree<2n.
If L_1 and L_2 are two Brunnian links with all pairwise linking numbers 0, then we show that L_1 and L_2 are equivalent if and only if they have homeomorphic complements. In particular, this holds for all Brunnian links with at least three components. If L_1 is a Brunnian link with all pairwise linking numbers 0, and the complement of L_2 is homeomorphic to the complement of L_1, then we show that L_2 may be obtained from L_1 by a sequence of twists around unknotted components. Finally, we show that for any positive integer n, an algorithm for detecting an n-component unlink leads immediately …
We present two practical and widely applicable methods, including some criteria and a general procedure, for detecting Brunnian property of a link, if each component is known to be unknot. The methods are based on observation and handwork. They are used successfully for all Brunnian links known so far. Typical examples and extensive experiments illustrate their efficiency. As an application, infinite families of Brunnian links are created, and we establish a general way to construct new ones in bulk
Habiro gave principal ideals of Z[q,q^{-1}] in which certain linear combinations of the colored Jones polynomials of algebraically-split links take values. The author proved that the same linear combinations for ribbon links, boundary links and Brunnian links are contained in smaller ideals of Z[q,q^{-1}] generated by several elements. In this paper, we prove that these ideals also are principal, each generated by a product of cyclotomic polynomials.
A link L is called Brunnian if every proper sublink of L is trivial. Similarly, a bottom tangle T is called Brunnian if every proper subtangle of T is trivial. In this paper, we give a small subalgebra of the n-fold completed tensor power of U_h(sl_2) in which the universal sl_2 invariant of n-component Brunnian bottom tangles takes values. As an application, we give a divisibility property of the colored Jones polynomial of Brunnian links.
We introduce the (general) homotopy groups of spheres as link invariants for Brunnian-type links through the investigations on the intersection subgroup of the normal closures of the meridians of strongly nonsplittable links. The homotopy groups measure the difference between the intersection subgroup and symmetric commutator subgroup of the normal closures of the meridians and give the invariants of the links obtained in this way. Moreover the higher homotopy-group invariants can produce some links that could not be detected by the Milnor invariants. Furthermore all homotopy groups of spheres…
A C_n-move is a local move on links defined by Habiro and Goussarov, which can be regarded as a `higher order crossing change'. We use Milnor invariants with repeating indices to provide several classification results for links up to C_n-moves, under certain restrictions. Namely, we give a classification up to C_4-moves of 2-component links, 3-component Brunnian links and n-component C_3-trivial links, and we classify n-component link-homotopically trivial Brunnian links up to C_{n+1}-moves.
We provide an alternative proof that Koschorke's $κ$-invariant is injective on the set of link homotopy classes of $n$-component homotopy Brunnian links $BLM(n)$. The existing proof (by Koschorke \cite{Koschorke97}) is based on the Pontryagin--Thom theory of framed cobordisms, whereas ours is closer in spirit to techniques based on Habegger and Lin's string links. We frame the result in the language of Fox's torus homotopy groups and the rational homotopy Lie algebra of the configuration space $\text{Conf}(n)$ of $n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^3$. It allows us to express the relevant Milnor's $μ$--…
A C_k-move is a local move that involves (k+1) strands of a link. A C_k-move is called a C_k^d-move if these (k+1) strands belong to mutually distinct components of a link. Since a C_k^d-move preserves all k-component sublinks of a link, we consider the converse implication: are two links with common k-component sublinks related by a sequence of C_k^d-moves? We show that the answer is yes under certain assumptions, and provide explicit counter-examples for more general situations. In particular, we consider (n,k)-Brunnian links, i.e. n-component links whose k-component sublinks are all trivial…
We show that the coefficients of the re-normalized link invariants of the paper "Multivariable link invariants arising from Lie superalgebras of type I" are Vassiliev invariants which give rise to a canonical family of weight systems.
In this paper, we shall give an explicit Gauss diagram formula for the Kontsevich integral of links up to degree four. This practical formula enables us to actually compute the Kontsevich integral in a combinatorial way.
We consider Milnor invariants for certain covering links as a generalization of covering linkage invariants formulated by R. Hartley and K. Murasugi. A set of Milnor invariants for covering links is a cobordism invariant of a link, and that this invariant can distinguish some links for which the ordinary Milnor invariants coincide. Moreover, for a Brunnian link $L$, the first non-vanishing Milnor invariants of $L$ is modulo-$2$ congruent to a sum of Milnor invariants of covering links. As a consequence, a sum of linking numbers of ' iterated' covering links gives the first non-vanishing Milnor…
Given a finite dimensional representation of a semisimple Lie algebra there are two ways of constructing link invariants: 1) quantum group invariants using the R-matrix, 2) the Kontsevich universal link invariant followed by the Lie algebra based weight system. Le and Murakami showed that these two link invariants are the same. These constructions can be generalized to some classes of Lie superalgebras. In this paper we show that constructions 1) and 2) give the same invariants for the Lie superalgebras of type A-G. We use this result to investigate the Links-Gould invariant. We also give a po…
We study the 2-loop part of the rational Kontsevich integral of a knot in an integer homology sphere. We give a general formula which explains how the 2-loop part of the Kontsevich integral of a knot changes after surgery on a single clasper whose leaves are not linked to the knot. As an application, we relate this formula with a conjecture of L. Rozansky about integrality of the 2-loop polynomial of a knot.
We consider the operation of Whitehead double on a component of a link and study the behavior of Milnor invariants under this operation. We show that this operation turns a link whose Milnor invariants of length < k are all zero into a link with vanishing Milnor invariants of length < 2k, and we provide formulas for the first non-vanishing ones. As a consequence, we obtain statements relating the notions of link-homotopy and self Delta-equivalence via the Whitehead double operation. By using our result, we show that a Brunnian link L is link-homotopic to the unlink if and only if a link L with…
We give an introductory survey on the universal Vassiliev invariant called the perturbative series expansion of the Chern-Simons theory of links in euclidean space, and on its relation with the Kontsevich integral. We also prove an original geometric property of the anomaly of Bott, Taubes, Altschuler, Freidel and D. Thurston, that allowed Poirier to prove that the Chern-Simons series and the Kontsevich integral coincide up to degree 6.
We refine a Le and Murakami uniqueness theorem for the Kontsevich Integral in order to specify the relationship between the two (possibly equal) main universal link invariants: the Kontsevich Integral and the perturbative expression of the Chern-Simons theory. As a corollary, we prove that the Altschuler and Freidel anomaly (that groups the Bott and Taubes anomalous terms) is a combination of diagrams with two univalent vertices; and we explicitly define the isomorphism of the space of Feynman diagrams which transforms the Kontsevich Integral into the Poirier limit of the perturbative expressi…

We continue to develop an obstruction theory for embedding 2-spheres into 4-manifolds in terms of Whitney towers. The proposed intersection invariants take values in certain graded abelian groups generated by labelled trivalent trees, and with relations well known from the 3-dimensional theory of finite type invariants. Surprisingly, the same exact relations arise in 4 dimensions, for example the Jacobi (or IHX) relation comes in our context from the freedom of choosing Whitney arcs. We use the finite type theory to show that our invariants agree with the (leading term of the tree part of the)…
We introduce a matrix representation of a chord on a tangle which leads us to representing tangle chord diagrams as stacks of matrices that we call books. We show that band sum moves, Reidemeister moves as well as orientation changes are implemented on \widetilde{Z}_f - a framed link invariant constructed from the Kontsevich integral that's well-behaved under band sum moves - by matrix congruences. We prove that being given the bare framed Kontsevich integral Z_f(L) in book notation for some unknown link L, we can determine what the link L is, as well as the projection of Z_f(L) in the origina…
This paper is an exposition of heuristics related to Witten's functional integral, relating it to Vassiliev invariants and to the Kontsevich integrals that can be used to produce Vassiliev invariants of knots and links. In particular, we give a simplified version of the appearance of the Kontsevich integrals in the perturbation expansion of the functional integral.
The discovery of polynomial invariants of knots and links, ignited by V. F. R. Jones, leads to the formulation of polynomial invariants of spatial graphs. The Yamada polynomial, one of such invariants, is frequently utilized for practical distinguishment of spatial graphs. Especially for $θ$-curves, the polynomial is an ambient isotopy invariant after a normalization. On the other hand, to each $θ$-curve, a 3-component link can be associated as an ambient isotopy invariant. The benefit of associated links is that invariants of links can be utilized as invariants of $θ$-curves. In this paper we…
Recently, Mullins calculated the Casson-Walker invariant of the 2-fold cyclic branched cover of an oriented link in S^3 in terms of its Jones polynomial and its signature, under the assumption that the 2-fold branched cover is a rational homology 3-sphere. Using elementary principles, we provide a similar calculation for the general case. In addition, we calculate the LMO invariant of the p-fold branched cover of twisted knots in S^3 in terms of the Kontsevich integral of the knot.
The perturbative expression of Chern-Simons theory for links in Euclidean 3-space is a linear combination of integrals on configuration spaces. This has successively been studied by Guadagnini, Martellini and Mintchev, Bar-Natan, Kontsevich, Bott and Taubes, D. Thurston, Altschuler and Freidel, Yang and others. We give a self-contained version of this study with a new choice of compactification, and we formulate a rationality result.
The integrality of the Kontsevich integral and perturbative invariants is discussed. We show that the denominator of the degree $n$ part of the Kontsevich integral of any knot or link is a divisor of $(2!3!... n!)^4(n+1)!$. We also show that the denominator of of the degree $n$ part of the universal perturbative invariant of homology 3-spheres is not divisible by any prime greater than $2n+1$.
This work develops some technology for accessing the loop expansion of the Kontsevich integral of a knot. The setting is an application of the LMO invariant to certain surgery presentations of knots by framed links in the solid torus. A consequence of this technology is a certain recent conjecture of Rozansky's. Rozansky conjectured that the Kontsevich integral could be organised into a series of ``lines'' which could be represented by finite $\Qset$-linear combinations of diagrams whose edges were labelled, in an appropriate sense, with rational functions. Furthermore, the conjecture requires…
Pulling back the weight system associated with the exceptional Lie algebra G_2 by a modification of the universal Vassiliev-Kontsevich invariant yields a link invariant; extending it to 3-nets, we derive a recursive algorithm for its evaluation.
In 1999, Rozansky conjectured the existence of a rational presentation of the Kontsevich integral of a knot. Roughly speaking, this rational presentation of the Kontsevich integral would sum formal power series into rational functions with prescribed denominators. Rozansky's conjecture was soon proven by the second author. We begin our paper by reviewing Rozansky's conjecture and the main ideas that lead to its proof. The natural question of extending this conjecture to links leads to the class of boundary links, and a proof of Rozansky's conjecture in this case. A subtle issue is the fact tha…
We first present three graphic surgery formulae for the degree $n$ part $Z_n$ of the Kontsevich-Kuperberg-Thurston universal finite type invariant of rational homology spheres. Each of these three formulae determines an alternate sum of the form $$\sum_{I \subset N} (-1)^{\sharp I}Z_n(M_I)$$ where $N$ is the set of components of a framed algebraically split link $L$ in a rational homology sphere $M$, and $M_I$ denotes the manifold resulting from the Dehn surgeries on the components of $I$. The first formula treats the case when $L$ is a boundary link with $n$ components, while the second one i…
These introductory lectures show how to define finite type invariants of links and 3-manifolds by counting graph configurations in 3-manifolds, following ideas of Witten and Kontsevich. The linking number is the simplest finite type invariant for 2-component links. It is defined in many equivalent ways in the first section. As an important example, we present it as the algebraic intersection of a torus and a 4-chain called a propagator in a configuration space. In the second section, we introduce the simplest finite type 3-manifold invariant, which is the Casson invariant (or the Theta-invaria…
Using elementary equalities between various cables of the unknot and the Hopf link, we prove the Wheels and Wheeling conjectures of [Bar-Natan, Garoufalidis, Rozansky and Thurston, arXiv:q-alg/9703025] and [Deligne, letter to Bar-Natan, January 1996, http://www.ma.huji.ac.il/~drorbn/Deligne/], which give, respectively, the exact Kontsevich integral of the unknot and a map intertwining two natural products on a space of diagrams. It turns out that the Wheeling map is given by the Kontsevich integral of a cut Hopf link (a bead on a wire), and its intertwining property is analogous to the computa…
We write a formula for the LMO invariant of a rational homology sphere presented as a rational surgery on a link in S^3. Our main tool is a careful use of the Aarhus integral and the (now proven) "Wheels" and "Wheeling" conjectures of B-N, Garoufalidis, Rozansky and Thurston. As steps, side benefits and asides we give explicit formulas for the values of the Kontsevich integral on the Hopf link and on Hopf chains, and for the LMO invariant of lens spaces and Seifert fibered spaces. We find that the LMO invariant does not separate lens spaces, is far from separating general Seifert fibered space…
This paper is expository and is accessible to students. We define simple invariants of knots or links (linking number, Arf-Casson invariants and Alexander-Conway polynomials) motivated by interesting results whose statements are accessible to a non-specialist or a student. The simplest invariants naturally appear in an attempt to unknot a knot or unlink a link. Then we present certain `skein' recursive relations for the simplest invariants, which allow to introduce stronger invariants. We state the Vassiliev-Kontsevich theorem in a way convenient for calculating the invariants themselves, not …
We construct power series invariants of rational homology 3-spheres from quantum PSU(n)-invariants. The power series can be regarded as perturbative invariants corresponding to the contribution of the trivial connection in the hypothetical Witten's integral. This generalizes a result of Ohtsuki (the $n=2$ case) which led him to the definition of finite type invariants of 3-manifolds. The proof utilizes some symmetry properties of quantum invariants (of links) derived from the theory of affine Lie algebras and the theory of the Kontsevich integral.
