We prove that if n\ge1, then an (n+1)-component Brunnian link L in a connected, oriented 3-manifold is C_n-equivalent to an unlink. We also prove that if n\ge2, then L can not be distinguished from an unlink by any Goussarov-Vassiliev finite type invariant of degree<2n.

On a theorem of Goussarov

In this paper, the easier methods of my thesis are applied to give a simple proof of a theorem of Goussarov. The theorem relates two possible notions of finite type equivalence of knots, links or string links, showing that the resulting filtrations are the same up to a degree shift by a factor of two. This is then applied to the situation of rooted claspers to show that rooted claspers of sufficiently high degree must preserve type k invariants. Claspers and finite type invariants of links

We introduce the concept of `claspers,' which are surfaces in 3-manifolds with some additional structure on which surgery operations can be performed. Using claspers we define for each positive integer k an equivalence relation on links called `C_k-equivalence,' which is generated by surgery operations of a certain kind called `C_k-moves'. We prove that two knots in the 3-sphere are C_{k+1}-equivalent if and only if they have equal values of Vassiliev-Goussarov invariants of type k with values in any abelian groups. On surgery along Brunnian links in 3-manifolds

We consider surgery moves along (n+1)-component Brunnian links in compact connected oriented 3-manifolds, where the framing of the each component is 1/k for k in Z. We show that no finite type invariant of degree < 2n-2 can detect such a surgery move. The case of two link-homotopic Brunnian links is also considered. We relate finite type invariants of integral homology spheres obtained by such operations to Goussarov-Vassiliev invariants of Brunnian links.

On the Kontsevich integral of Brunnian links

The purpose of the paper is twofold. First, we give a short proof using the Kontsevich integral for the fact that the restriction of an invariant of degree 2n to (n+1)-component Brunnian links can be expressed as a quadratic form on the Milnor mu-bar link-homotopy invariants of length n+1. Second, we describe the structure of the Brunnian part of the degree 2n-graded quotient of the Goussarov--Vassiliev filtration for (n+1)-component links.

Finite type invariants and Milnor invariants for Brunnian links

A link L in the 3-sphere is called Brunnian if every proper sublink of L is trivial. In a previous paper, the first author proved that the restriction to Brunnian links of any Goussarov-Vassiliev finite type invariant of (n+1)-component links of degree<2n is trivial. The purpose of this paper is to study the first nontrivial case. We will show that the restriction of an invariant of degree 2n to (n+1)-component Brunnian links can be expressed as a quadratic form on the Milnor link-homotopy invariants of length n+1.

On C_n-moves for links

A C_n-move is a local move on links defined by Habiro and Goussarov, which can be regarded as a `higher order crossing change'. We use Milnor invariants with repeating indices to provide several classification results for links up to C_n-moves, under certain restrictions. Namely, we give a classification up to C_4-moves of 2-component links, 3-component Brunnian links and n-component C_3-trivial links, and we classify n-component link-homotopically trivial Brunnian links up to C_{n+1}-moves.
